    Dollar Tree sells 2 types of cleaning pads I use with my Swiffer Wet Jet. A white, fluffy pad I use for dusting and a microfiber pad I use for mopping. Both work great, they're washable, and it saves me money.

    As of November 2020 they have DEFINITELY made the cap harder to remove BUT IT CAN BE DONE. As Jillee says: boil the water and then keep the cap in for a while. I did it for three minutes, removing every minute or so both with the water actively boiling BE CAREFUL and then with the heat off, and each time I used a good oven mitt to try to turn it HARD but not rip it. It was easier each time and then finally a good hard TWIST got it off.
    Now here's the thing: Jillee doesn't show the inside OF THE CAP in the video. Several of the comments talk about "two flanges" that can be snipped to make it removable after the initial removal. I think Swiffer got what was happening and they have now REDONE this. Instead of a couple of flanges IN THE CAP, there are now approximately 12 small flanges or sticking out bits that line the inside top of the cap which is what makes removing it so hard. I got it off, but what I'm going to do now - fingers crossed - is: using a carton knife I will cut down EACH of the flanges and see if the bottle can still be: A) resealed; and B) will STAY sealed and NOT LEAK. Not only do I store the Swiffer with the bottle hanging down, it's been suggested if it leaks into the mechanism it will rust and freeze. I don't have vinegar at home right now so I will wait to refill it until I do and report back if I see any leakage.
    UPDATE: I used the Box Cutter and sliced off the flanges - it's easy to do but be careful as you can slip and cut a finger and you kind of need to cut counter to the flange - you'll figure it out - and then with a deep breath I screwed the cap back on ... and it held ... and off ... and it unscrewed firmly but easily ... and put it on ... and did it again and again. No problem. I haven't filled it with anything but it seems to screw on firmly and be removable again easy peasy.

    The bottle-filling hack is great information. I would advise everyone to go out and buy 3 or 4 bottles for reuse. You know that the moment Swiffer realizes they're losing money because of this hack, they'll redesign the bottle cap so that it can't be removed without damaging it. So best to stock up now.
    I've been using this same hack for my Fabreeze. I mix some water, a few drops of soap, a few drops of lavender oil (not too much as it's pretty strong), and a bit of vinegar/alcohol (just enough to help dissolve the oil {tablespoon or so}). Cheap and does the same thing as the fabric freshener.

  • @Guinan2
    @Guinan2 Před 3 lety +120

    Apparently, the company that make the floor mop refills have caught on to this hack. It is harder to remove the cap now. I held my empty bottle in the boiling water for over 5 minutes and had to use pliers (gently) to get it open. Didn't damage it and was able to put the cap back on to use in the swiffer mop without leakage.

    • @jason3977
      @jason3977 Před 3 lety +24

      Yes, I have tried using the boiling water hack and it doesn't work. What I do is just use pliers as well. I believe they made the cap have like stronger grips so it can't melt off. So if you are a new wet jet user use pliers instead!

    Just a couple more things... when you're washing cleaning pads, microfiber cloths, etc. you do not want to put in fabric softener, nor do you want to use "reduce static" on the dryer, including dryer sheets or balls. The static is what helps pick up the dust from the floor. Fabric softener adds a coating onto your cloths, which then will go onto your glass, floors, counter surfaces when you clean... not something you want to do! If they are really dirty, soak in vinegar (not bleach because that ruins the fabric, along with other reasons), then wash with detergent only. If you have an extra rinse on your washer, use it to get all the detergent off. Because of this, I would wash all cleaning supplies separate from regular laundry.

    First off, thank you for this great video.
    If you don't want to put boiling water on the cap, which does work well, you can also take a medium sized flat blade screwdriver and get under that skirt on the cap twist while you move it around it. You're essentially stretching the plastic.
    Once you get the cap off, there are 2 options to keep from having to go through this in the future. You'll need a pair of wire cutters (dykes). You can go inside the skirt and cut off all of the little plastic tabs that grab on to the bottle neck or you can just cut off the entire skirt. It's only there to prevent you from opening the bottle and refilling. It serves no other purpose.

      @@kristinahurkala2351 it hasn't leaked for me. I'm sorry that that happened. Wrapping electrical tape, or Teflon Tape on the threads might tighten the grip between the cap and the bottle? (Though I've not done this with my bottle, Teflon tape is ment for keeping pieces screwed together tightly in plumbing)

    • @kristinahurkala2351
      @kristinahurkala2351 Před 5 lety +1

      @@serenitydabarbarian404 It leaked from the little holes in the center of the cap. I'm going to try it again, but with cold water. I used hot water, and maybe that is why that happened.

      @@kristinahurkala2351 I did it and it didn't leak. There are tabs in the lid and tabs on the bottle. Make sure you cut the tabs on the lid only. UPDATE: I just read where you said it leaked from the center hole, not the edges. So I have no idea why. You may need to buy 1 refill bottle and try again with a different lid. Also, I took the Swiffer label off and wrote "Front" on the bottle when I put it in correctly. I'm always trying to insert it backwards. I wouldn't want to pierce a new hold in the silicone part of the top, which could cause leaking.

    For rhe wet jet mop pads i use some old shark steam mop pads. They discontinued my mop and the pump stoped working but i still have the pads and they fit perfectly!

    This is the best homemade Swiffer solution yet! I just used it on my floor and it worked beautifully! I didn't have a sock like the one you show, so I used an old wash cloth and attached it with a couple of heavy duty rubber bands. I then trimmed out the little spot for the sprayer but I could have skipped this step. Worked so much better than the Swiffer pads!

    I’ve been using dish soap for everything. I make all purpose cleaners, cleaning the toilet and tub. You really don’t need a huge variety of cleaners. All u need is a spectrum of diluted soap. Dilute more for surface tops and floors then use larger amounts for tougher mess

  • @buttonsnbowsrebornnursery8038

    Worked perfect but I used plillers then clipped the plastic locks off so the top works just like any other screw top. No leaks and if you want you can use your favorite cleaner in it just pour and go.

    You can also use pliers to open it. Wrap the plier ends with duct tape if you don't want to damage the bottle. Grab onto the top half since the bottom part is the locking mechanism. Took less than 5 seconds.
