that impeller is toast that thing is barely pumping. Quit starting the motor out of the water, you're just burning up the impeller. It only takes a couple seconds to ruin the impeller and then burn up the motor due too no water circulation.
I have exactly the same rig. Thinking of trying a plate on the lower unit as you have (I’m sure it has a proper name). Have been contemplating switching to a 4 stroke - would you bother? Interested in any comments. Thanks.
hell yeah buddy I had a 1976 13 super sport with a 50 hp motor, it flew! I regret selling mine so much..

Rubber water pump impeller spins in metal cup...will melt it even when run a few seconds dry....careful.

What kind of range do you get with ThIs thing?
i watched an other video and it said roughly with the 40 hp motor about 35-40 mph which is not bad at all
