  • Do These 10 Things Make A Difference In Skateboarding?
Today, were taking a look at skateboards and their parts to see how the various options can affect your skating. Whether it's deck size, wheel size/hardness, truck tightness, or shoe size, a lot of people ask about which is the best for skating. Learn a little info and hear my opinions on the matter in this video!
Also, make sure you checkout Skateboard Bruh and Rad Rat Video who I mentioned in this one for other awesome skate videos!
As always, thank you for watching and I'll see you next time!

The last time I skated previous to this was on a Hosoi Hammerhead, so that gives you an idea of how long the gap was between now and the last time I was on a board. Thanks for this video. @@ChadRockwell Yikes! That's terrible to hear man. But yeah, the speed wobbles are a real thing. I actually was longboarding with fairly loose trucks on somewhat rough ground, going very fast. Then I hit more smooth terrain, picked up even more speed and almost tripped over my own legs due to serious speed wobble. I had the foresight of not pushing a third time, but instead jumping on the board and find my balance and slow down first. Otherwise I would have slammed the ground for sure. Oh, and it was flat terrain. Just imagine what would happen down hill. Anyone hill bombing even lower hills is pretty insane if they're not tightening trucks. Did you ever consider skating again? Or is the knee so messed up that it's become a no-go?

Good advice on the wheels! The weight of the skater also comes into play a bit, and I feel like nobody mentions that in the skateboarding community. In roller derby, it's crazy the variety in preference people have about their wheel hardness. At 120 pounds, wheels in the 90s feel to me how I assume something like a 101 feels for a 180 pound person. The best advice I got was if you don't know where to start, pick a range based on the type of skating you do and go low or high in that range according to your weight

@@pat7917 Thank you! Yeah, it feels like a good first solid trick. If you're catching air, flipping, or spinning the board I would say it's a serious trick. I think the usual thought process is to start with an ollie, but the shove it is so much easier and simple. I thought it would take me much longer. Landed only one clean one though, so I gotta practice it now until it becomes routine. Haven't been able to talk with any skaters in person really, so it's nice to hear from someone online!

  • @diddymelone2265
    @diddymelone2265 Před 2 lety +4

Now I am skating only a year by now, but from what I´ve learned so far, here are my experiences: regarding deck size, I started with 8.38 and tried an 8" afterwards, now I am at 8.5
8 was definetely to small for my size 12 feet, when I switched to an 8.5 I felt that I was improving very quickly.
as for wheelsize: I began with very standart 52mm and then tried 55mm, nowadays my goldilocks are 54mm.
I switch betweem 100A classic shapes and 97A conical shape wheels depending on my mood and what I wanna skate. they both work great, the harder wheels obviously slide better, the softer ones prevent me from slipping out on wooden ramps and are much better for cruising down the street.
Bushings are very important to me actually: with my first complete came some tensor trucks, which had a double cone combo and they were really squirly.
I switched them for a pair of 95A barrel/cone and it was much, much better right away.
just lately I put on my very first indy 159 and holy shit what a difference. these trucks are amazing, they turn so well, I feel like surfing.
however I had to switch out the bushings right away, they were so soft, I got wheelbite the instant I stepped on the board.
switched the stock bushings for 94A barrel/cone indy bushings and now its awesome. dont overtighten you kingpin nut! rather try harder bushings!
what also makes a difference is concave. well mostly not, because 98% of decks you can buy have medium concave, so its not a big deal.
but my very first complete had high concave, combined with the squirly trucks, which were also more narrow than the deck (8.125 vs 8.38) that made for a really unstable setup, for a beginner.
I recently tried the old deck with steep concave again, but it wasnt right for me.
my feet hurt from standing on it too long and when I put my foot on it, the concave makes me wobble left and right unintentionally.
so my current deck has a very mellow medium concave, still not low concave, but a low medium one, which I find is pretty good.
overall I can tell from my short experience that you shouldnt worry too much about it, if you keep your mind open, you will find out what suits you best over time and that process I think can be alot of fun.
also yeah it doesnt matter that much what you skate, but how you skate it.
no setup will make me land that pop shuvit automatically and whenever I try someone elses board, whatever I can do on my board, I can do on theirs as well, only with more difficulty.
so thats what I think: the right setup for you can make things a bit easier, but its still skateboarding, so its gonna be hard, and fun ;-)

Thanks for this comment. Im skating an 8.5 after skating an 8 for years. The 8 was too little for my size 11 shoe. The 8.5 feels good but god damn is the board I got heavy. Ive been learning kickflips on it pretty well, but I just got an 8.38 board online. I just want to say I think height can be a factor in choosing board length too, I am 5’10 and do not have long legs. Most 8.5 boards are 32+ inches long, so I feel like my drag with my front foot is not as exaggerated so I cant level my board out super high very easily, it takes a lot of effort. My 8.38 Deck I just got came at 31.5 inches, looking forward to trying it out

I never comment on CZcams, but I decided to start riding downhill and street boarding at 33 years old. That was a year ago, so I'm really only watching this video to see if my assumptions are correct. The last point about shoe size should be discussed further, because a properly fitting shoe makes all of the difference, even if some don't realize it. One day I was wearing a perfectly fit pair of Adidas, cheap and simple. I've always worn BMX or skate brands, but never pushed the envelope on a board I friend put a board in my hand and we started riding a parking lot with nice transitions. Then he kept on me about riding for months. I was scared to ride in certain situation for about 3-4 months. Now it feels natural.
The fit of a shoe changed my world, because I felt connected to the grip for the first time, instead of my shoes begging me to stay on the board. I've seen the videos with kids riding barefoot, that would've never been me. If the shoe fits, riders are more likely to do well.
