@@SelimHammi naw you should be able to roll at any speed, including from static.
This is an area I think skateboarders are behind on, they've not really thought about this much. I think skateboarders should be looking to Judo and other grappling art "breakfalling" technique. These guys have mastered the art of being slammed to the ground mostly against your will in the safest possible ways. Ironically, a lot of the principles the little Latino dude said about the "parkour roll" apply to Judo breakfalling. In Japanese, it's called "ukemi".
I seriously recommend you search "ukemi" and "breakfall" and "how to" to learn a much better approach than what skateboarders can enunciate. There are some variations in the approaches to ukemi between the arts like western wrestling, judo, and Sambo, but all are sound.

Yeaa.. I have an electric skateboard 30-40km\h.. mostly drive it at 25-30km\h and I fell once but I guess it was 10km\h or so.. I had the MOST budget board at that time that you can buy and the wheels were too small to go over the curb and it hooked onto it with the truck mounting screw.. I flew but there was no choice in doing a roll or slide... as I started to fall onto ONCOMING TRAFFIC... oh man.. I still just pretty much landed like in a push up position.. hurt a bit with some flesh wounds but no broken bones thankfully.. and didn´t fall into oncoming traffic cause I am typing atm this to you lol. Anyway I don´t think you can actually really LEARN how to fall from a skateboard, you might think ok Im gonna roll but then break something and you wouldn´t have broken anything if you didnt roll.. or slide and vice versa... just take it slow on sketchy things and if you wanna do some fast riding or tricks then you just have to know that if you fall it is gonna be 50\50 of breaking bones or dying lol

The sweeping with the arms and the roll are by far the best to learn. As nice as sliding would be, in the real world without polished concrete and smooth wood it doesn't happen.
You try and slide on regular skatepark concrete, a road or the street and your clothes and skin grip immediately and tear. The best thing is to curl up and hope that you roll it out.
As it's said, "Speed has never killed anyone, suddenly stopping, that's what gets you". The more gradual you can slow yourself down, the safer you will be.

well said, luckily all my local skateparks have been remade or resurfaced over the last 5 years or so, and have very smooth polished concrete, i still dont fall well though, but its certainly better on that surface than it was. i need to learn the swipe and slide...
and if i skated rough asphalt etc, the tuck and roll. ;)

When I was like 13 or so I got talked into going to a skate park for the first time because it was the hip thing to do. I didn't own a board and had never been on one before yet for some reason my friends at the time wanted me to do a drop-in on a half pipe. After some convincing I agreed and posted up at the top. I had no idea what I was doing and they didn't give me any advice other than "it's easy." 3 seconds later I fell off the top of the half pipe and smashed my tailbone with max force. The pain was immeasurable, it felt like lightning was surging up my spine into my brain and then permeating through my entire body for A FULL WEEK! I never skated again since and my back has been in excruciating pain ever since that day. I wasn't able to play sports any more in school or do anything physical anymore either because it hurt so much just to stand up let alone run around.

But if you skate, you just have to try to turn of your brain and just enjoy the moment. Before i landed my first Ollie down a Stairset i must have fallen a thousand times, but that‘s just part of the game. Just get up again and once you land a trick you‘ve been desperate to do, it is one of the best feelings you will ever experience.

But also: never wears a helmet himself.

You guys touched on it in the end about being healthy, but being in good physical shape has a huge impact on being able to walk away from a fall. Not only stretching and being limber, but also muscle mass helps build bone density which means less chance of breaking a bone. Being an old ass man, my advice to anyone wanting to start skating or get back into it, who is not in the best physical shape, is to cross train. Ride a bike, do yoga, lift weights, go for a run, a walk, or even ripstick it up(please don't), whatever it takes to get the body moving, and your chance for injury goes way, way down. Plus the better shape you are in, the higher you can ollie, it's science.

Drove 2000km without a single accident or fall.. until a taxi drove over the board.. but this instantly made me realize HOW MUCH I loved skating... I had that freak incident with the taxi but I managed to hop off before it drove over it.. but being without a new board for 8months was HORRIBLE... I just so wanted to chill and ride again every single day... Got a cheaap ass board for a second, fell from it a couple of times, still wanted to ride even more. Now finally got an amazing board, smooooth as butter ride and noisless and 30-40km\h.. it is soooo good to chill and just ride man. Find it funny as I started this so late, guess mostly that I always wanted to more chill and ride then do tricks but living in a flat city a regular longboard made no sense for years.. until the electrics finally started to appear. Best purchase in my life I think lol.

Use vicious grip tape while bare foot. The cheapest, easiest, pain-free solution.

in 1997, when I was 14, I was switch bombing a hill in hayward.. speed wobbles and fakie 4 wheel slide (I was told by my friend who was with me) sent me head first into a parked car which put me in a coma, broke my wrist and thumb. I had tears all over my brain and a tear in my brain stem, I also chipped my neck. died multiple times within the first few hours too. 2 weeks later when I was conscious and on my way to healing, I was sent to vallejo to go through rehab. all I did when I was there was watch skate videos and the shop I had been going to since I was little (the station, in fremont) sent me posters and videos. the day after I was released from the hospital I skated. the CHP confiscated my board from the accident scene (kelly hill is an unincorperated part of hayward) the doctors at the rehab center wanted me to wait at LEAST 6 months before I skated again but I had brought my board to my 2 month follow up appointment and noseslid the red curb to show that I was ready to skate again. I was told I had to wear a helmet from then on since I had a brain injury. skateboarding both took and saved my life. my balance is shit now and I gained a ton of weight and I can no longer skate like I once did. watching the braille videos gave me the itch to skate again, I still havent, but I want to. oh well.

oh boy! I Just fell down last week when I rode my board on a downhill and broke my jaw. Now I am in a huge pain and not able to eat and talk normally in the next few weeks. I am not sure if I should skate again, but I want to... you seems much more brave than me.

This is really profound in many ways... applies to both literal and figurative falls. "I want to learn... scary... try it... get over that fear." Fear of trying anything new... a relationship, a job, a sport...

if you don't feel comfortable learning how to fall from a video, i recommend you take judo classes for a while, that's how i learned how to fall, it's the first thing they teach you.
