I would add a few tips. Bend the knees. Wear protection, especially wrist guards; also a rated helmet if around cars, hills, going fast, rough terrain, or while learning a “dangerous” trick; full padding if a fall could be truly injurious. Carve while dancing on the board - it helps with balance, and looks cool. Learn the mirror of a trick on the other side soon after (switch, if you will), or even while learning a new trick on one side. Push switch (not just practice how), alternating after every several minutes, when cruising for a long while. And of course, always check your board, and “tune” if necessary with standard skate tool(s). Bearings should be kept reasonably clean, dry and free rolling - learn recommendations (if any) as far as grease or wax is concerned - and replace bearings when truly worn. Wear firm, flat footwear or rugged sandals; and practice barefoot, too, to toughen the feet and feel the ground. Try someone else’s board (with permission, of course) to “mix it up” for more varied muscle memory. I know some this may seem obvious to an experienced skater, but it may not be to a newbie.
AMAZING tips. thank you for sharing these
It makes me so sad that this is the top rated comment, when on other videos put out by men, the top rated comments like dumb jokes or thank yous or literally anything other than advice. The person who made this video is so obviously an expert and I don’t know why everyone is so quick to upvote a commenter who is just giving basic advice that has been said a hundred other places on the internet. I loved your video Natalie, thank you for sharing your unique takes on learning to longboard that have been so obviously been and crafted built over years of practice. All y’all who upvoted this guy should just go watch his videos if you want to hear his advice so much… oh wait he doesn’t have any…
Slide gloves are preferable to wrist guards.
I'm learning longboard to avoid my masturbetion addiction, this is very helpfull. Thank you!
@@socialleprecon wtf are you really hating on dude cause he commented extra advice on a woman’s video?! Come on bro, do better
Learning to fall is pretty key. I kind of adapted break falls from Judo/Jiu Jitsu to skating and it works pretty well, plus you get funny looks from people who see you doing weird ninja rolls.
cool how u combine skills outside of skating to help out w ur progression !! ur bails must b so stylish o:
@Deacon Mulder are all of us bjj guys just skaters and surfers😂
@Deacon Mulder 🤣😅
I love that I’ve also found someone who does this and that you mentioned the weird looks from ninja rolls LMAO. I recently rolled out of a crash that could’ve caused serious injury to hands and face, everyone was completely shocked when all I had was just some minor bruising and road burn across the main impact points during the roll
Lol, literally just had this thought today.
I don't think a lot of people know this, but you keep learning the stuff you're thinking about even while you aren't doing it. There's tons of information your brain keeps while failing over and over again, and sometimes sleeping on something or leaving it alone is actually more helpful than throwing yourself at it again! It gives time to process, condense the information, and time to forget habits or practices that didn't help. Plus, I always find that I think about way fewer different things after taking a break, which helps because the rest happens without conscious thought.
Yes this is so true 👍🏾
I just got my longboard and I was surprised how easy it was to ride when u feel the board under your feet. Also I felt some sense of freedom and bliss when i was riding
Thank you for your video. Best piece of advice I heard anywhere on any video was you saying learn to push goofy or opposite of your dominant stance. I just got a long board and haven't skated in 20 years. I started learning to push and ride both ways due to your advice and it has helped out TREMEDOUSLY.
Stretching is a good practice, especially for surf skating, at least I feel it helps. I like the idea of coming back to a trick you can’t get at a later time! 🤙🏽
yes pushing switch is such a good tip, I used to skate to school everyday and I dedicated a whole year to skating there and home switch and now people can't tell wether I am regular or goofy lol that is until they see me attempt a switch flip 😅
Right on!
I started skating in 1972, on metal wheels!
Still skate today!
A couple of months ago I came off my street skateboard on a hill, because I panicked and thought I saw a car coming towards me. Twisted both ankles before I was even off the board, and grated my knee up. Moral of the story, always remain calm when skating, it's a good stress reliever, and panicking can lead to injuries or falling
I hope you’re doing okay and all healed up now!
Hey Nat. I just bought my first longboard today after a long while out of skating.( i'm a bit older now.) But thanks for your tips. I'm stoked to get back into it again. I hope to improve soon. Keep up the awesome content. Greetings from Australia.
I'm actually very nervous about skating. I don't wanna go out at all because I'm worried someone might watch me practice. I have no idea why but I really don't like it when someone watches me do something. Especially because I'm a beginner and suck really bad. So I'm worried about going out to practice.
Same!
Same but the only way out of it is to always remember that absolutely nobody cares. I live in NYC, and people do way more outrageous shit than little old me stumbling off the board as I practice foot braking - and guess what, I don't care and neither does anyone else. It doesn't matter. Do what you enjoy :)
about the last tip, when I started longboarding I bombed a hill without being able to break (I wasnt able to stop at the top) and my wheels wobbled so I flew off onto the concrete.. however I rolled and I was fine! So learn to brake and dont be discouraged when you fall! but be careful lol
Thank you for the tips! I just bought my first longboard. This will definitely help in starting my longboarding journey. 😃
I think you fully got me into longboarding, about binge watch all your videos
You give off good vibes, Natalie! Keep up the quality content; subbed. ✌️
I was skating the other weekend with my kids and I took a really bad fall after trying to power slide around a corner. I had bloody knees and a scraped elbow, got up, wiped off the dirt and rocks, and kept on skating. I told my kids that it’s ok to fall and that sometimes the falls hurt, but you can’t let temporary pain stop you from getting back up.
Great vid. I'm getting back to sk8. You helped a lot. Although I don't need to práctico falling anymore. I've fallen so much over the years. ❤ your vids.
Natalie hi im from Ukraine & I want to say thank you for your videos for your style because of you I become more motivated to learn something new , to take only best things from longboarding, stay awesome as always
Stay safe 💙💛
I pushed mongo growing up so ofc pushing switch was easy. Def taught myself to push regs shortly after. Also make sure to bring a water bottle and a snack too. You never wanna skate on an empty stomach. That’s how you’ll get tired fast and def stretch too. Soreness is such an inconvenience so save yourself the pain
def agree. gotta bring the yummies to the sesh !!!
Mongo!!!!
Great video! I just got my board yesterday on OfferUp lol. I’m loving it but I have to get more confident and get better with pushing and stopping. Thanks for the bud much love! I subbed. You have great vibes!
You snapped 🤯🤠🙌
Great vid! I came across a longboard for the first time and was like cool so I bought it. I'm completely fresh to this so any tips for older big guys would be helpful!
Could you do a video for absolute beginners that have never longboarded before? I’m a little older and also out of shape, so I definitely need to be careful on my body. I’m mostly looking to skate to get out of the house and some exercise, probably not looking for anything extreme. Also just a means of travel
Love your flow on the board and just throwing this out their your gorgeous Ive been longboarding about 7 months now just last week I had my worst wreck yet I hit a mini van wile bombing a hill was going about 30mph I woke up 4 days later in a different states hospital with a crack skull punctured lung and broken hand it hasn't stopped me I'm still longboarding just a lot more careful due to my skull. The feeling you get cruising on a board or bombing a hill is amazing just feel free it's hard to explain. Looking forward to more of your videos
no gear?
I just started longboard dancing. :D I'm impatient and want to learn how to do cross steps and peter pans immediately 😆
you got it !! the fun part about skating is learning new tricks and steps c: ur stoke is inspiring me
Good to know! Thanks!
I've experienced your advice on returning to a trick later with music. I started on recorder to piano to trumpet with lessons from Allen Colin and stayed with that for about 20 years until I could no longer keep up the muscular tension needed in the lower back ribcage muscles, so I turned to the fife when someone gave me a brass fife hand made in Afghanistan and with Sir james galway's 2min:27sec video, I learned the correct embrasure and begane to average 10 hours a day for 8 weeks l; no break. After, I stopped cold and didn't do it for a few months and when I came back, I was rested and sounded as good and even better after the break.
Great video vide!
Yasss you make me want to learn how to long board!!!
i love that c: go for it !!
I used to ride everyday after school to my buddies house. We cruised for miles! I plan on getting a board again 15 years later... hopefully I won't be too rusty
Thanks for these helpful tips. I'm just getting into longboarding. I have a Retrospect drop through and the Magneto Hana Pintail and both of these boards are very heavy (7 lbs each). Can you recommend some lighter boards for doing tricks on longboards? I'm not sure what you're using but, you make it look effortless.
Drone shots yayyyy
omg the *technical specs* I love it
today is my birthday and i just got a longboard thank you for this!!
GREAT TIPS I WISH I KNEW BUT NOW I WILL PUT IN PRACTICE
Thank you sooo much
Hi!
So, I'm an OG skater from WAY back in the day (i'm almost 50) & doe various reasons, mainly i finally live in a place where driving just felt stupid because i live my whole life in a 3 mile radius - AND because some douchecanoe that owed me dough gave me one (derp - lol) I GOT A LONGBOARD.
I wqs a streetskate/halfpipe guy & surfed on the weekends through school. Back then I don't even remember longboards being a thing. The whole deck setup - the new trucks & reverse trucks & various bushings & whatnot - It;s a totallly rad scene & I wish I had caught on sooner.
I had to buy an electric longboard 2 weeks ago (my fkn car got stolen) & OMFG- I am gonna live the rest of my life on 4 wheels again & it feels so great.
BUT - I just wanted to say - Until I saw your video - I had never even SEEN anyone attempt to do any real actual tricks on a longboard. Obv I have sen the dancing thing - which to me - prolly because I'm an old sexist fart - Looks awesome when ladies do it & str8 goofy when doods do... but whatever - I'm old and stupid.
Point being - You're fkn awesome.
Cheers
BTW - The learning to fall bit is huage. I bailed CRay-ZAY HARD my 1st week on the deck. I was going down hill & hadn't made ANY adjustments to the board since I got it & the person who gave it to me is a midget (not for real, but really) - & I got going way too fast & the side of the road got XRAZY sketch AND pinched down hard WHILE traffic got heavy & I STRAIGHT UP ATE IT SUPERMAN -STYLE doing a SOLID 20 mph. THANK GOD I managed to turn to one side right before i hit the tarmac, so my upper arm & shoulder was able to protect my chest & head, BUT - my lef hip took a shot - left knee too - my upper arms & shoulders are tree trunks & even though they took the brunt - didn't even bruise - but the hip & knee left me limpin for days - the whole ordeal wounded me more between my ears than they did physically - BUT it made me realize how stupid I had been to NOT MAKE THE NECESSARY ADJUSTMENTS so the deck fit me personally & how I plan to use it,
So... yeah
You're still awesome
Love your tutorial natalie
what’s your favorite tip from this video? do you have any other tips that others should know about? drop em in the comments
Hey just found the channel:) and subbed I have a question. I have been skating longboard for about 6 years but only just used it as a transport. I wanna start learning some tricks. But I can only stand with left foot in front how do I train balance on my right foot bc I have no balance there. ? Thanks ❤️
I currently got stuck on progressing on my longboard tricks and then i thought of working on a trick i can do consistency and put variations on it and i progressed very fast for me tip number 4 is very effective ❤️ but still i skate alone because i'm the only who rides a longboard but yeah tip number 4 help me progress a lot thanks for the tip ❤️😊🤙
Can you suggest what kind of longboard should a beginner go for in rough terrains?
What is the weight of board you used? The long board i'm using is around 3.5 kgs i am struggling while practicing kickflips
How tight or loose should my longboard trucks be while practicing my new dance steps?
It's kinda personal preference, but I think most people start of tight and after a while loosen the trucks more. At that moment they have have already more confidence on the board and want to aim more for better flow and style.
Cool vid 😎
Awesome super duper Natalie 🔥🔥
thankuuu
Very tendon question:
Can you do slides/ speed checks?
Because I feel like I need to learn it, to cruise, but I would need a new board.
So it or necessary?
I was in the middle of watching a longboard dance "ON THE RUN" by Lofti Lamaali and clicked on this video while watching it; the music transitioned so fkn well ☠️
Boards and has a sick 4Runner yo!thanks for the tips
You rock!
Trick with falling is turning the linear momentum into angular momentum - once you lock that into your subconscious your good. Deflect, don't halt, the vector of force and try to make the impact stretch over time and impact more areas spreading the load. Don't stop just slide, roll, tumble - the goofier you look like a kid falling the less likely you take real damage. Falling like a superhero or egoist worried about how some messy tumbling slide looks will get you busted up.
What pants are you wearing while talking at camera and at 2:53? Love them!!
What board is this I need it so bad it looks amazing!!
The best tip is to stretch before skating. Easier to prevent yourself from getting hurt if you are loose. Thanks Natalie! What's your favorite tip you shared ?
stretching is so so important !! my fav tip is to be 100% u and not compare urself to other skaters
@@nataliepluto Yesssss that's so key! Thank you for this and I'll make sure I am 100% me and to not compare myself to anyone else. I appreciate you!
What's the size, brand/type of your board?
I've been skating for 40 years and cant ride switch. I can do 180s on a snowboard with no problem and I've been doing that for less years.
crazy how ppl progress differently. but that doesnt mean being able to push switch is impossible for uu :) a great way to get ur switch game up is to push skate a specific distance entirely in switch.. a couple times a week or so, but consistency is key. might feel weird at first but you’ll slowly notice urself getting faster and more comfortable. hope this helps!
yeah my main reason i switch to long board cuz of injury on doing skateboard and im old to do more tricks i just want to ride board
which size of the board in 2:15 that u used please?
Could you also please make a video on good exercises to do for complete beginners to build muscle and stay healthy/safe?
Helping the cat cross the road!
Difficult when you have no friends to skate with lol ahhhh im so socially anxious about skating alone
go to a skatepark, you’ll meet a ton of new people!
can you do a video on good spots in socal/la? that parking lot looks perfect!!
ahh great video idea yes !! this parking lot specifically is where the docksession LA crew holds their skate sessions every sunday. it’s lot 4 south along the santa monica beach.. close to perry’s cafe :)
@@nataliepluto dude thank you so much for telling me where it is!! ik a lot of people hate sharing their spots when others ask
i appreicate it! stoked for new videos on both of your channels 😁
So im 30 and i always wanted to learn how to skateboard, i just want to cruise though nothing crazy!! Im so scared though, its so different from when I was young and fearless!! Do you have any tips for a beginner?
Heyo! Early 30's here and just started longboarding about two years ago. It was intimidating at first. I felt clumsy, off-balance, and very much out of my element. I even pushed mongo for the first two months before course correcting, so I had to learn to skate all over again having not even learned how to skate yet. Just keep plugging away at it and you'll get better. Your enjoyment will increase noticeably. Today it's my favorite way of staying active and I try to skate every day if possible. Summers in CA are perfect so some days I'll spend all day skating at the beach. Very therapeutic. The risk of occasional injury is 100% worth it and I would do it ten times over. Longboarding changed my life when I needed it most. Hope you find this encouraging, happy trails!
long boarding is the best form of transportation.
I would suggest take ur time don't force speed in ur learning process I thought differently I ruined my forearm to my elbow when I made it home the whole area of skin was gone.
what about any tips on slides?
🙏🏽🙏🏽
can you teach us how to ollie on a long board? love your videos.
get a skateboard if you’re trying to ollie
Do you ever free ride or downhill skate at all?
i recently got a longboard and i’m obviously not very good yet. the trees near where i live produce these tiny nuts or debris that fall onto the floor and i always get stopped by those and get close to falling every 10 seconds, does anyone know how to help this?
Bigger wheels
@@skyline1795 ok thanks

much love !
What's the perfect first longboard? I wanna get in the game but have no idea with which one I should start with
go to your local longboard/skate shop and they’ll help you out
typically it’s going to be a drop through longboard, which means it’ll be closer to the ground and more stable
I sucked at skateboard :(( so i want to try longboarding 🤞
you can do a kick flip with a long board?!?! Cool! must be exhausting tho!
And Skate Shoes and Heelys
Please, what board are you riding in this video?
You're so cool and you're amazing
