Its important because adults have different circumstances when learning and this video deals with all the things that will make learning a little safer. It took me over a month to put this together and its over twenty minutes long so buckle up and hang on.

Where i live,Malmö sweden,we have loads of really good skateparks, lots of the architecture being built is skater friendly, old skaters are now calling the shots in the city when it comes to building stuff.
We have a high school (16-19 year olds) which has skateboarding on the schedule.
Lots of older people skatibg here,im 50,and i never stopped just because we have such a good skate community, producing world class skaters etc.
Last but not least, ill say 30+% is girls/women.
Indoor/outdoor parks have girls/women skating wirh other girls, certain hours no boys allowed etc.

i gotta say, as someone who clicked on this video out of curiosity mostly because i’m a 30yr old who has been skating since i was 10, the part about skate culture and skate parks being very non judgemental and especially not bothering women who are skating or learning to skate is very true in my experience. i have very often seen women or younger girls learning to skate at my local parks and the only thing i have ever heard any of the guys who are regulars there say to them is something along the lines of “you should turn your head to follow your body when you try that” or “it helps if you keep your shoulders directly above your knees”. just useful advice they would give to anyone. skaters are very inclusive for the most part (there’s always some bad eggs, they get corrected quickly by everyone else though) and as long as you are putting in the effort and seriously trying to learn to skate and not just taking pictures at the park without actually skating, no one will say anything except encouraging or helpful words. skate culture is very unique in that there are very few gatekeepy types/attitudes. we want everyone to experience the joy of skating, and everyone is welcome to learn. the people who are experienced skaters are happy to pass on their knowledge and they all recognize that at one point they were in the exact same situation as the person learning and it brings them back to how amazing it felt when they landed their first kickflip or finally committed to a drop in for the first time. we want everyone to experience the joy we felt learning to skate and because of that, will never laugh at someone learning, and will always offer help if requested. we also recognize that it’s a very male dominated culture and in order to branch out from that we have to not be creepy weirdos to every woman at the park, so we just leave it alone, and treat women/girls at the skatepark the same as we would anyone else.
never be afraid to go to your local park.
i know it can seem intimidating but just be genuine. the only people skaters can’t stand are people attempting to use skate culture for aesthetic reasons without respecting the culture/people that created those aesthetic choices.
skateboarding was invented by weirdo outcasts, to connect with other weirdo outcasts, and as a result, we never want to oust people from the scene without an extremely good reason.

Today I got this video mentioned in my feed. I am a woman of 58 and started skateboarding for the first time of my life in 2019, at 57. Indeed there are little to no tutorials catered for older grown ups who are starting with this sport. I really like how you cover all the things we will encouter, sooner or later.
I must say I get a lot of positive feedback from young kids to older skateboarders when I am in a skatepark. Skatelessons are helping me a lot too and I love the skatevibe during those evenings, full of adults who are learning to skateboard.
It is great sport, enabling me to unwind like no other sport has ever done.

I dont have the guts to try that but the "step down take weight off board foot" technique should help. another thing I dont like are the yellow bumpy things at every crosswalk, they will throw you off if you hit them too fast.

Here’s the biggest tip of all….
if you think something is too extreme for you/you’re not in the mood to take a risk and hurt yourself,
DO NOT be afraid to slow down, jump off, and step around an obstacle.
That one really deep crack in the sidewalk?
If you feel like it’ll catch your wheel and make you fall or get hurt,
    Simply don’t ride over it.
    Screw what anybody else thinks.
Dont let anybody question you about “ha you couldn’t ride over that?”
You ride where and how you’re comfortable.
If the pavement is too rough, and you think there are too many rocks,
    So be it.
    You can’t tide over everything.
Learning that early is key to having minimal wipeouts.
Hell yeah i get off my board to avoid steep hills (or just hills that put me at a speed im not comfortable riding at… thats steep to me, and thats what matters)
    SAFETY FIRST.
You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do.
Thats the safest thing you can do, is keep that in mind.
You CAN SAY NO to anything you feel is too extreme. Flat ground or not.
Theres no shame in acknowledging your limits.

As 45 y.o. Skating dad i can 100% recommend this video. All these tips are superhelpful and all of these I learned the hard way 😅 on my own. Thanks for creating and sharing! Love the shoutout to the skate culture. It is the most accepting group you’ll ever meet. When you are a ‘old’ skater and go and try to skate in a skatepark you’ll be welcomed and if you need help, nobody will laugh at you and are glad to help. This is a wonderful community. 🤟🏻

I've watched this five times or more....it's so cool and very inspiring. I'm 51 and have just bought my first board. After a couple of seshs which I thoroughly enjoyed, I'm progressing exponentially and I love it! Also, I teach guitar and tell all my students that it does not matter when you start, (as a lot of people think they would have achieved more if they had started fresh out of nappies!) all that matters is your desire and drive to do it and you will achieve it. I'm going to prove this by becoming a competent skater, even though I have started in my fifties.

your never too old! if you can still maintain a center of balance. over time, after you find your balance, you will feel the board become an extension of the moment of your legs. just be patient, play around, experiment, and enjoy yourself.

Man, this is by far the best tutorial for adults. It's exactly what I went through and I see all my mistakes now and I had a lot of bad falls too. I think I am an adult now by government definition probably but still a kid at heart. I never was in the skateboard, culture growing up, and couldn't afford a skateboard either. I will get learning again and follow these life-saving tips.

  • @erics2091

A tip I learned when choosing either Goofy or Regular stance. If you saw a sheet of ice and were going to slide on it. Would you jump with your left foot first or right foot first?
However it is advantageous to learn both ways.
Plus keep in mind we aren’t kids anymore. We can’t take two weeks off for a broken arm. We have bills to pay. Safety, safety, safety. It might not look cool but at least a helmet is a must. You’ll eventually learn how to fall properly, but it takes falling to learn.
Keeping your knees bent is also key. More control and easier to recover while falling with bent knees. You tend to slide and sit then topple over standing.
Wish everyone the best of luck! I started a few years ago at 29. I was mostly doing freestyle and tricks, practicing in the basement with skater trainers (plastic wheel stops).

This is hands down the best newbie instructional video on YT! Well done. Especially the advice that it doesn't really matter what kind of board you learn on. The car analogy is a good one. So many people (like me, 53) get hung up on the gear when they should just get on with it! Well done!
