First story: that director tried to push OP down the bus, but OP simply stepped aside and let her throw herself under it. She tampered with company data, tried to blame someone else for her own stupid decisions, and ended up revealing a affair not only with someone who was married, being married herself, but another member of the company (that probably was against company's own policies, as if all her other acts weren't a fireable act enough);
Third story: imagine thinking severance means your ex-worker still is obliged to work for you, then being forced to pay them extra money because the current one doing his job is a massive incompetent, and them badmouthing them to the client who only kept hiring your company's services because of them, and wanting a way out of your sucky service, just to have them hire your ex-worker directly and make you lose a profitable contract? OP's ex-boss was a idiot.
First Story: I bet the IT guy could be criminally charged for what he did. And she could be charged with conspiracy in relation to it.
Telling such an invaluable employee they're easily replaced is the fastest way to lose them. Good for OP in story 2 for proving old owner wrong in the grandest possible way.
Totally agree, and from what OP said, it sounded like he was already wearing about two or three extra hats, which makes the fact that HIS bonus was less than the others an even bigger insult in my opinion.
You don’t have to have a business savvy spouse and those others he consulted to see the writing on the wall, the boss was clearly planning to replace OP in the near future.
Legit same thing happened to me, and as far as I know this person lost over half of their clients when I left. Their facebook business page has only 500 followers, with my own page I've almost tripled that in a little over 3 months. I've also been helping their competition do the same. :D

At 1st, I was impressed by the director 's ability to erase all trace of the e-mails. Then the accomplice entered the picture and all made sense.
I work at a hospital where an uneducated woman went from a front line position that required 6 months training and no higher education past high school to manager of an entire department. Turns out she was sleeping with her boss and got his job when he moved sideways.
They continued their open affair until it was time for her to throw him under the bus and take his position.
She was a terrible manager and spent all her time in her office taking online upgrading courses so she could become qualified for the job she was currently doing.

Story 1: Wow, imagine trying to sweep your own terrible actions under the rug by deleting all evidence and then throwing the blame on someone else.

I didn’t get the idea that she inadvertently made a terrible decision. I got the impression that she wanted OP gone for… reasons, and that deleting the emails was *always* part of the plan. It would certainly explain her rapid rise through the company previously.

We all know the mantra: don't mess with the IT guy. Not even when you have an IT manager on your side.
Also, if there's one thing you can do to scream "I'M GUILTY" to everyone, is to try and erase evidence. Can't the IT manager possibly face a lawsuit or even get jail time for tampering with company files?
Pretty sure his future inability to get any job in IT higher than sweeping the floor in a Dell warehouse is more damaging to him.

@@mrich1976 Honestly the flash drive could have been company assets, I used to work at job where I used a UBS flash drive regularly to transfer data between 2 unlinked computers (don't ask why they were unlinked something to do with the way their network was setup it was way above my pay grade to worry about that), so it could have been a flash drive he had handy for work rather then a personal drive and obviously you can plug drives given to you as part of your work to your work computers.

Story 2: One of the last things you would want to call a high-performance worker is "replaceable". It is literally one of the trashiest things to do at work.
It's also a sure fire way to either get yourself fired or send the company into the ground if you acted on it.
Even just by treating them as such makes them want to look elsewhere.
Seems that in general, if you tell someone they’re replaceable, they’ll test that theory.
So what the new Director needed was the “Complete Idiots Version” of the module. That sounds about right.

The truth, that the bosses in stories 2 and 3 found out the hard way, is that, in the end, THEY were the one who were replaceable, as most bosses are, usually way more than the employees themselves.
Anyone can buy a business. Not everyone can actually make that business work.
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure calling an employee replaceable is detrimental to workplace morale.
It's also dumb, because, as today's stories showed, so are the employers.
Honestly, every time I hear stories about really skilled employees being treated like crap by their bosses makes me believe that the bosses drink the kool-aid and believe that employees are simply replaceable cogs and either know absolutely nothing about the work (or amount of work) their employees do or they do but still refuse to admit anyone could be more valuable than them.
Its why Business degrees ate ridiculous

I watch way too many of these videos. When the first op said about his friend in IT I knew it'd be fun.
My dad and sister actually had something similar to the "you're replaceable" story happen to them, except it was on their softball team (my dad coached, sister played). Low and behold, the good players moved to my dad's team and the other team was reduced to just the "in better than you" people. The coach literally resorted to cheating when we were winning by 20+ to 5 (maybe 40+, it was a while ago but point being, they weren't even a threat that day).

The first story. I loved it. She sold her assets before and after the divorce.
I mean that first one isn't revenge, it's just exposure. She made a stupid decision and in japanese exploitative company fashion she tried to throw someone else under the bus with less power. Also I love that idiots comment in the second story about him being replaceable, imagine being that stupid that you think your best employee, who is doing the job of 3 people PLUS HR and payroll, can be replaced easily. Man these stories today are a banger, absolute gems.

Two words: ego & incompetence
And, i think... a bit of fear. Hear me out... you have an employee who can step into EVERY SINGLE position at work, and excels at it.
Even if Boss/Owner knows their position is safe, in their minds... there's always that 1 is a zillion chance (aka, next to impossible), and so... they start trying to figure out how to remove that threat. It may not even be a concious thing... all subconscious.
Once the concious mind becomes aware that there's something bugging them about this stellar employee, it takes notice and tries to find a reason to get rid of them, to appease subconcious and get that nagging feeling to go away.
Easiest way? Insult the employee while making work harder or unfair in some way, and try to get them (force them) to quit. Mind you, concious & subconcious could even war over what is actually desired as an outcome as well as the means to get there.
In this case, when boss blew up after super-employee was on vacation... boss had had a dose of reality during that time, trying to manage without. Boss would NEVER admit they did super-employee a dirty with a smaller bonus & the insult, so they never intended to address what THEY did. They exlected super-employee to return and pick right up where they left off, and boss could continue their on-and-off power plays... but super-employee putting in their two weeks notice caused boss to see RED - this was against everything they finally realized was what the needed (and, in a way, wanted... because bet you, boss had to do everything super-employee normally does during that vacation!).
So... boss lets anger direct the mouth, "YOU'RE FIRED!"
Thus... sealing their own fate.
Any boss/owner worth their salt and with even a shred of intelligence would look at a super-employee as their biggest ASSET. They'd take their suggestions to heart, and implement them.
Instead, they forget that while yes, they can hire anyone (or several) for much cheaper... the new employee(s) don't have the knowledge, training, trust of customers, OR the LOYALTY that former super-employee had.
It's better to give appropriate bonuses, pay increases, and respect to these super-employees and help KEEP them loyal to you, thus ensuring that your business continues to grow.
But... I've yet to meet any boss that actually thinks further down the road than that quarter's profit margin.
$450/hr at 1 hr per day is over $3k in gross income weekly. $12k/monthly thats INSANE

If you are the only person available who knows how to solve a very expensive problem you will be amazed at how much you can charge to fix it.
I can explain why companies to this since I have been replaced by between 3 and 7 others every time I quit a job.
The bosses think that employees are interchangeable, oh, he works with IT infrastructure... we get another one that works with IT infrastructure and everything will continue as before, not to mention that we don't have to pay the high wage this employee has accumulated throughout the years.
It's like saying yeah, this person can speak.... so can this other guy that we have to pay 10% of the other guy.... how different can Spanish and Mandarin be? both are languages.
I really don't see what goes on in these bosses heads. I mean it's not rocket science to understand that people generally aren't too happy to keep working for you if you stiff their bonuses and tell them they are replacable. That in itself is toxic as hell but what do they expect? A sincere "thanks for the insight, boss"?
Regarding rSlash's closing question: Sometimes management sees the employee's cost to the company while missing their worth. This is often because the employee does such a good job at whatever they do that management doesn't realize that it's not as easy as they make it look.
They also get very childishly peeved (not quite the word I want, and jealous doesn’t quite say it either) when their company becomes just “the place XX works at””. Not the well known brand (?) they were hoping for. So the reasonable solution is to get rid of shining star employee and tank entire business. 🤭
Companies often fire the highest paid employees in order to save money. Especially when they think that they are replaceable.
I had a coworker who was fired for just that reason. They rehired him 2 weeks later with a substantial raise.
Yes...the old "I don't like how much I am having to pay them....now I am stuck paying them even more" move. Employers shoot themselves in the foot all the time. Lol
Corporate pro revenge is sweet for sure…but I do hope that the OP in the last story created a consulting LLC business (or whatever he’d have to do) to be able to do the work. Even if you’re a 1-person business, you still should be set up as a business with the proper accounts, insurance, etc to cover your own butt, while also having an accountant on the payroll to help sort out the money. Lol. I know this all seems logical (at least it does to me), but you’d be amazed how many people just want to “wing it” and jump into an opportunity without any proper planning.
That 1st story serves as proof that no matter how smart you think you are, there's *always* someone smarter. What made this woman think that mass-deleting emails wouldn't eventually get somebody's attention?

The story : I feel that. In automation, I'm expected to write a ton of comments on each and every single grafcet step/ladder or code line, because someone with no business to even be looking at this program is expected to be able to look at it and tell what they are about.

I can completly belive the first story because im in university and there's some teachers that think students are that stupid. I enter an "advanced" english program and, i kidd you not, the introduction was primary-level english 🤦🏻♀️
When it comes to universities, I can kind of understand why they do that. They start with basic stuff to make sure everyone is on a similar level. This is important because not everyone has the opportunity to study in a good school, so they might need that basic content to catch up with those who had.

I know the failure is on me, but I think part of what contributed to my failure to get through college was that it was nothing but dull generic academia that had no relation to me wanting to become a history teacher. Like, dude, stop putting me through slag and busywork, I'm here to become a teacher, a HISTORY teacher, not a science or english or math teacher! In fact, them giving me a math course is the nail in the coffin for me since math was always my worst subject and I just...blew it.

@@DarkEinherjar I understand that, and i appreciate the effort. My problem is that this program was cataloged as "advanced". Like a course you take in your last year of career. That means you have to spend 4-5 years studying before being able to get in. Maybe im being too harsh, but i was dissapointed that teachers think that students don't know how to use google translate.

Or stupid, as they’re firing those that have been there the longest and are being paid more because they have experience.
My Dad’s place of employment made that mistake before to save money and lost money because they kept a lot of inexperienced workers and had to rehire workers they let go or shuffle more experienced workers around; workers like my Dad who has a lot of experience there and doing different things.
The company that made those stupid mistakes have since sold my Dad’s place of employment and the new owners are a lot smarter than the old ones.
With that first story, I'm wondering if the intention was to take credit for the module or if that's how she was promoted, by sabotaging people around her, deliberately making projects bad and then deleting the evidence that it was her

Story one: sounds like boss that got herself fired would make the perfect politician… was it Nancy Pelosi?
I'd say the woman in the first story, that's how she always came out cleaner than every one else. She always used a specific phrase in any emails that had stuff that might backfire on her, or maybe every project she used a new phrase, and got her IT manager side piece to erase them before the project was finally due so that she was the only one who had any evidence of anything.
Better tip for Story 2: don't EVER tell an employee that they're replaceable
The ONLY time someone should be told they are replaceable is during the internship, with the clear message that they are there to learn enough useful skills that they WON'T be replaceable.

I left me last job in October last year. I was basically a stocker in a warehouse. I've heard stories about how the place has had a lot of problems with getting their trucks out in time now and other things because the inventory was off pretty badly. And stuff wasn't been done as well as when I was there.
I would basically stock for the week rather than from day to day. While keeping things neat and organized.

Lesson to be learned: *ALWAYS* treat critical emails like evidence in a court case. BCC them to your personal email, save copies (eg, the .msg files) to a flash drive, and *print them* and save the printouts. Do all 3 to avoid accusations of "fabrication".
Imagine being told you're more replaceable than others... Yeah I'd quit and let that job burn for a while after leaving.
They NEVER learn! Ever! I used to work for a family business as a kid, so even despite my ADHD & actively learning healthier work habits, I'm a reliable employee who often takes on duties outside what's expected of me to fill my spare time caused by excelling at my job. Employers ALWAYS pretend I'm replacable. The last time I was called replacable from a job, I quit. And they lost a TON of their regulars. They legitimately had customers who only came to see me despite being complete strangers to me. Not to mention, at this job, one of the things I did with my spare time was *CLEAN AND ORGANIZE THE STORE.* Every time I go in there to say hello to my old coworkers, the place is disgusting! Upper management has even messaged me months after I left to offer me a promotion to the store manager when I'd previously been ignored for the position as an assistant. I left them on read. I'd rather make less money than work for that shithole again.
Regarding the first story, I suspect OP's IT guy dug out the backup archives which are probably offline and unreachable even by compliance deletes. Backups are intended to survive total database or mass-storage destruction. They may even not be in the same location as the database.

I wanted to say this, since it's something I've realized lately. Anytime I have a problem that I'm worried about it, I start imagining writing it in a reddit post and when I'm thinking of what to say, it sounds like rslash is just narrating my problem back to me. No idea when I started doing this but thanks rslash for the advice lol.
That info module mishap was such a stupid thing...managers make mistakes 'occasionally' and make a bad call. I don't understand how they can't just say..."yep I made a bad call....do yoy have the last one you sent me?" ( garunteed with that much work op definitely had a copy) the worst thing is they wasted a couple of weeks on a bad call and they fix it and move on. I doubt anyone would have gotten penalized too severely for it. And she'd still have a job and probably her marriage

To answer that last question about why bosses fire the key part to their company? It's because they don't know, simple as. The boss/owner is so in their own bubble that they can't see reality.

When OP described her incompetence, I was like, "the only way for her to get to that position MUST involve sleeping with someone".
It pisses me off, because stories like this (which I have witnessed personally) make people think that most women get to a position of power only via the advisors B and J Bosscock.

Why do bosses fire their best employee? The employee is too good and do great jobs effortlessly and the boss thinks that it is their product/management is the reason and not the employee's skills.

Are they really replaceable? At what cost? Replacing someone isn't as easy as it sounds. Usually, people that are "replaceable" are underpaid, and as such, no one else is gonna want their job. So the company either has to retrain someone to replace them, and waste time and money, or they end up hiring several people to do the job of one. I'm convinced that corporate big wigs have zero common sense. My favorite saying from my gpaw, "common sense ain't so common" lmao

I have learned a lot about human nature from this channel.
Similar thing happened to me ( a long time ago now ). I was managing a photolab, a new company came in and almost immediately made one of the the 2 guys on the counter redundant. It's important to note that the retail side of things and the lab side of things were TOTALLY separate. I was hired to manage the photolab...NOTHING ELSE. Then they made MY assistant redundant. Long story short they then made ME redundant. Expecting the last guy do do it all. Six weeks later while at home I get a call from the 'last guy'...so the convo goes pretty much like this. ( phone rings, I pick it up ) . 'Hello'? LG ( last guy ) : 'Hi OP...how's things'? ME: 'Oh not so bad....how's you and how's the lab doing'? LG: 'What lab'? Me: 'Ummm...THE lab'. LG: 'I'll say it again...WHAT lab'? ME : It's CLOSED'?! LG: 'You could say that...the entire shop ( pharmacy ) is closed'.
Two things to know...when I took over the lab it was bringing in 'maybe' 10 - 12% of the total takings...when I left it was bring in over 85% of the takings. And two...the customer base I had was fantastic...and included a large number of Professional photographer who used our services...not only for their work...but for their own personal stuff as well. And...since they no longer had anyone who do do the work...they voted with their feet ( along with most of the other customers) and went elsewhere. Ooooops !

Managers really lay off their best employee to save money, how do people become managers with THAT kind of logic.

I have a similar story to the one where OP was definitely not replaceable.
I was in a band a while ago and basically the members of the band had issues with management so we tried to address it with the owner. He responded by telling us we had no right to "call the boss for a meeting" and ignored every complaint we had. When I protested, he proceeded to tell me that i was replaceable and he can fire me on a whim if he feels like it. With all the work I put in in this band, plus my talent. Me...replaceable. I was so hurt by those words, I decided he was going to regret saying that trash to me. So the very next day when we were supposed to perform, I intentionally showed up 30 minutes after I was supposed to already be singing and THEN told him I was quitting the band. He spent more than an hour begging me to reconsider cause I was the only singer available for the night. Basically almost 2 hours into a gig and the so called band wasn't doing anything. I still walked away. He tried to hire new singers and the other band members would tell me how horrible they were and how he would fire them days later cause no one was cutting it. He eventually swallowed his pride and asked me to come back to the band. Turns out I wasn't replaceable after all.
Yeah, asking to take over the interview at your spouse’s company is unprofessional. However, asking your spouse to put a picture of the two of you together in the room when your former boss is interviewed might be possible.
Damn that spouse isn't nice. Absolutely no reason to say no.
