    idk man, as a feminist, i see plenty of discourse within feminist circles surrounding pornography and what defines empowerment. plenty of feminists are very much opposed to pornography. i think what's difficult is the fact that sexuality is complicated enough, and within our society, sex can be exploited/used exploitatively, but if it's not purely for consumption or it's not made to be consumed a specific way, then it's taboo, and that further complicates our ability to explore sexuality. that was true in the 50's, it's simply become more blatant and over-the-top now. and we still get people arguing with us over consent, because for some reason "someone should actually want to have sex with you and be into it" is still a radical concept to some folks. but i also think that consent is not really separate from this issue of having sex where both people leave feeling good about it. again, in feminist circles, i have seen the pushes toward conversation beyond "yes means yes," about consent not being passive, about consent being active and individuals being active so that sex is something they're having rather than sex being something simply done to them that they just said yes to (i hope that made sense!). so what i wanna see is those conversations being pushes more and more into wider society and us all being less apprehensive about those conversations.

      I don't think there are many feminists who are "opposed" to pornography as much as we see the PREDOMINANT use of it as a promotion of the patriarchal malignancy. There is perfectly good pornography that doesn't dehumanize women as a tool for male domination.

      GeekFurious - There's a problem of Marketing - the Majority of Porn watchers/users are Men, hence the majority of Porn is catered to what Men like. Furthermore - There's a fair amount of empirical literature to suggest that a large number of Ladies like a bit of Male Domination (for example - Sori's comments in other videos about wanting Vin to be more possessive).
      I'm reminded of a documentary about the subject - where a famous Porn actress was talking about Facials and responded "Of course it's degrading, that's why it's so hot!".

      Agreed. While this is an awesome song it's sad to me that closer is the only Nine Inch Nails song that some people know just like teen spirit is the only Nirvana song for some people. My ex only knew this song closer and I told him that if that's all he knew of Nine Inch Nails then he was missing out on quite a bit. I still couldn't get him to get into them but whatever his lost. He just had terrible taste in music. But you're right it is a concept album. I was very lucky to see them here in my hometown in 2008. It is a show that I will never forget. This is wonderfully genius work, btw. Sometimes "god" is metaphor, ya'all.

  • @RazeTheWeak
    @RazeTheWeak Před 5 lety +338

    This whole album is about a man’s fall from grace. Mr. Self Destruct plants the seed. A voice in his head driving his actions. He knows there is a problem, so he starts to eliminate all possible causes. First society with March of the Pigs, then his significant other with Piggy. Lastly, God in Heresy. Your interpretation of Closer is pretty spot in. He goes on to lose all emotions and becomes very mechanical in his existence in Becoming. The album concludes with him taking his life in Downward Spiral, then an introspective conversation with himself in Hurt, where he says he would do it differently if he had the chance to do it over again. It is an incredibly powerful and dark album that talks about mans struggle within, and day to day in society and relationships. It was so dark that Reznor has admitted he unsuccessfully attempted to kill himself after the tour while writing The Fragile. Floating in his boat house, he simply ran out of drugs, returning to shore having only written one song, La Mer.

      Science is a study by humans, and thus is as flawed as humans. It is not equivalent to reality. In my worldview humans are NOT equal to animals because humans are made in the image of God while animals were not. We have reasoning ability, emotional capability, and thinking ability on a level that animals do not have.
      Proof of point: Who will deny that it would be wrong for me to walk over to my next door neighbors, murder the whole family, just to eat what is in their refrigerator? But who would arrest a pack of lions and try them in court for killing a leopard to take its meal?
      Or to put it another way: Is murder wrong? If all humans are the same as animals, then why should we try to stop humans murdering humans when we don't try to stop other species from murdering each other?
      What is the difference? Intellect - thinking ability - a deeper ability to reason. Humans are not driven purely by instinct. A migrating butterfly does not have to learn how to navigate, it just knows it. Humans were not born to fly but learned how. Animals are not devoid of emotion, thought, or reason, but they are not at the same level as humans.
      So there are other worldviews where humans are not animals. Every human can have a different worldview. To pretend the scientific establishment is reality is as silly as when they gave the Papacy dibs on what is considered heresy.
      To summerize it simply: there is reality - what actually exists, there is worldview - what each person thinks exists, and there is established dogma - what a society or group establishes as reality. If you learn to distinguish between the 3 of them, you'll improve your critical thinking stats by +5.

    The Downward Spiral is one of the greatest concept albums by the way. I'd definitely recommend checking out the album in it's entirety. When you get the the last song, "Hurt" everything will finally make sense. Such a classic that Johnny Cash decided to cover it right before he died.

After that it kind of got lazy but I know that it's because he got clean and sober in that always happens with artists after they get clean and sober. I'm happy that he found some happiness and that he is on the road to recovery but still the music did get lazy in my opinion. Our views on things like sexuality are largely a result of our culture. You're confuse cultural memes with objective truths. You're not saying that you believe this is sacred, you're saying that is IS sacred and on some level we all know it. That's staggeringly arrogant.
    Just for the sake of argument, imagine this from the perspective of a hard atheist. We ARE animals, sex is not sacred, and it feels good for no other reason than to encourage us to do it (because the meaning of life is survival and reproduction). And that's not a grim view, because there is still beauty in it even if your view makes it hard to see and it doesn't dismiss the complex web of society we've built on top of it.
    Side note, I don't think pornography is empowering for women as a whole (ignore that, it's not a pun), but neither do I think it necessarily degrades them. That's for the woman to decide as an individual. You don't get to tell her that she's wrong to feel the way she does about sex, or that she doesn't believe that "deep down."

    • @VinAndSori

      @voyagerabove4034 Před 5 lety +23

      It's neither your view nor the strength of your conviction that strike me as arrogant; it's the assumption that "deep down" we know your worldview is correct and we're just kidding ourselves. It comes across as a complete dismissal of everyone who disagrees with you.

    • @VinAndSori
      @VinAndSori  Před 5 lety +3

    • @proteusblack8913
      @proteusblack8913 Před 5 lety +8

      I disagree. The culture has taught us that it is sacred due to archaic religious origins, and I don't mean just modern society. There are very old cultures who obviously saw the ritual and process of sex as sacred too. Something can be sacred to you, but to be bewitched into thinking it is a universal state of reality is a naturally and quite common naive perception. I think this is why people rag on christians so much - doctrine tries to insist that their truth is everyone's truth because its designed to be a conquering religion. As a result, people are convinced that its doctrine (including dictating what is sacred) is the one true paradigm.

    • @kyledsweeney
      @kyledsweeney Před 5 lety +10

      All Christians know that the Bible was written by men and that god couldn’t possibly exist as described therein, if he even exists at all. But for Christians to admit that to themselves would would send them into a spiral of depression and misery. They suppress this unwelcome truth and wield their faith as a bulwark against logic and reason, so they don’t have to think about the meaninglessness of their existence. But deep down, they know they’re just lying to themselves.
      (I don’t believe any of this, but hopefully it illustrates how such a worldview might sound from the other side.)

      @FzNd Před 5 lety +2

      While it's a fun song, there are so many songs in the Powerwolf catalogue that literally scream for a review on this channel more so than Army of the Night ever could. Honestly, it's a band more suited for a fireside chat than just a song reaction. Powerolf is the only band I know who are simultaniously accused of being fundamental militant Christians and Satanists, and who are, at the same time, clearly taking the piss out of both camps. Heck they even made a song about the duality ( *Catholic in the Morning, Satanist at Night* ). You should include a review of their latest album cover, with the centrepiece of the wolf being puppet master to both Angel and Demon, too.
      You'd need multiple elements in that discussion: a variety of songs like *Amen and Attack* or *Raise your Fist Evangelist* vs. *Lupus Dei* or *Mother Mary is a Bird of Prey* . And then contrast that to the absolutely overblown silliness that is *Resurrection by Errection* or *Coleus Sanctus* (I mean, really?! come on!!) vs. *Panic in the Pentagram* or even *Saturday Satan* . And let's not forget their whole stage gimmick with the cathedral flair, the incense and all that jazz.
      And in the end it simply boils down to the simple fact that these guys are neither religious fanatics nor devil worshippers, but simply a group of chaps, who celebrate and love playing Metal, as they have stated at multiple occasions. And tha celebration results in one of the best live acts in Metal of the last decade, so it'd be worth from that perspective alone :D. Nevertheless, a full on 3 hour or so dive into this band by Vin and Sori would be absolutely great to see.

    The song as many have said here is a small part of a bigger picture, this entire album was a way for Trent Reznor to come to terms with his depression, his addictions, and his hatred.
    This song in particular deals with the hatred he feels towards himself. The act of fucking like an animal makes him the same as any other animal, he's no longer human, he's no longer flawed, he can feel closer to God because it's a moment of clarity and calm for him. And I'm really glad that you two pick up on these things when you evaluate :).

      It's called TOUSEI (voice of the waves), it's in live, the lyrics are in Japanese but there's English subtitles in that video

    A NIN song that I think you 2 would appreciate is Something I Can Never Have. Think that it would be worth a listen just for you 2 and wouldn't necessarily have to be a reaction video!

    Cheers Vin & Sori, touching on how you ended this saying about the real world, that's true. There's a big difference between great ideals and what's realistically achieveable in the real world. Lastly your opinion is valid and appreciated!! Cheers

    Just found your channel and subbed , started going through your back catalog, and saw this pop up, and I cringed personally. Gotta saw you guys went into it with an open mind, so props to you for that, trying to find the deeper meanings. Respect.

    It's crazy that they have never heard this legendary song before. This album from NIN happens to be in Jonathan Davis' Top 5 favorite albums in music. True story!

    The whole album is about addiction and how it puts you down to a point where you feel nothing. Sex in this song is the way for feeling something beyond the empitness the drug-addiction left you with.
