This song is about a depressed person looking for anything to find meaning and hope. In this case, he's looking for sex to bring this to him. You really need to listen to the entire Downward Spiral album to see the toll depression takes on the protagonist's life. This is a top 5 album of all time!!!

Trent Reznor is known as a detail guy: a meticulous composer and manipulator of sound, layers upon layers of it. From his band's genesis 32 years ago, the leader of Nine Inch Nails has been known for songs of deep, menacing pain, rage and self-destruction. Today, Reznor's dark days of alcohol and drug abuse are behind him - and he finds himself, with a wife and two young kids.

    OMG! Fav Fav Fav Song!
"Closer" is a song about self-hatred and obsession, but to the artist's dismay, the song was widely misinterpreted as a lust anthem due to its chorus.
Two versions of the songs music video were produced, directed by Mark Romanek, and first aired on May 12, 1994.
The for television version of the music video was edited so that the removed scenes were replaced with a title card that read "Scene Missing," and in instances where the word fuck was edited out, the scene was accompanied by a stop in the video motion, making it appear as if the stop was a result of defective film (this was supposedly done to make sure the flow of the song was not affected).
The unedited version of the video was shown on Playboy TV's music video show Hot Rocks in 1994. In mid-2002, the unedited version aired on MTV2 as part of a special countdown showcasing the most controversial videos ever to air on MTV.
In 2006, "Closer" was voted No. 1 in a VH1 Classic poll titled "20 Greatest Music Videos of All Time.
Trent Reznor later said that, in retrospect, "The rarest of things occurred: where the song sounded better to me, seeing it with the video. And it's my song."
Most versions of song released as the single are titled "Closer to God" & are 13 seconds longer than the album version. Also; on the album, the piano tune at the end of the song is abruptly cut off in order to segue into the next track, "Ruiner"; whereas on the single, the tone of the last piano key plyed and the background sounds are allowed to play out longer at the end.

This song is part of a greater story, told over the course of the album The Downward Spiral. It's the story of how a mans life is taken apart, due to violence, madness and addiction. So this song is supposed to have those mixed feelings attached to it. It's bad for you, but it feels so good, but as things ramp up, you feel a loss of control leading ultimately, nowhere good.
It's also theorized by some that, since at the time of the recording Trent Reznor was addicted to Heroin, the song is being sung from the needles perspective "you let me penetrate you" as in, needle penetrates skin. It's heavy stuff.

I always thought character in this song is torn between his lust and his despair. And that "closer to God" meant the only time he felt alive and connected was when he was with this person he can't let go of. Not a happy song, but a very honest expression of a state of mind we've all been in at one point or another. Also, "God" pops up in a number of Trent Reznor's songs and it rarely ever means "God". It's usually whatever people worship. Money, power, government, authority, sex. Things like that.

I had heard Down In It from Pretty Hate Machine and kinda dismissed it as a one off single and I was like how did he get from that sound to this??? His musical progression has been so impressive and he is truly an artist. When I listened to The Downward Spiral I didnt get it at first it jist sounded like a lot of noise, it took thr third listen before I was able to truly listen to it ans understand which was what Trent was shooting for, he wanted people to find things in the music you didnt get the first time. It was truly a recording that was a piece of art and told a great story of redemption.
