The downward spiral is basically like a movie. each song tells the story of a two characters the protagonist and mr self destruct a sort of split personality of the protagonist. who continues to go further and further into debauchery, depravity, depression, mania and madness. A downward spiral if you will. And he slowly starts becoming less and less human striping away all of the attributes that make us, us. More robotic. Its easily one of the most nihilistic albums of all time. Imo of course. My favorite album of 1994.
Oh wow. Now I’m intrigued!
At some point, have look at Pretty Hate Machine (album).. Pretty much defined industrial for a generation.@@MaddyReactions
Pretty Hate Machine is in my top 5 albums
The album this song is from, The Downward Spiral, was recorded in the home of the late actress Sharon Tate, the actress killed by Charles Manson's cronies. The name "pig" was written on the walls after her death. Piggy and March of the Pigs are great songs from that album....
Ooooh
Well, this is an implication. You never said it is inspired by what happened. So although that is all true, I don't think it inspired these songs. Maybe March of the Pigs, I don't know, but Piggy is a song about abandonment. And it is clearly about Richard Patrick, whose nickname was Piggy and who left the band shortly before this album was recorded (in the studio Le Pig. And now this... is a bad taste, cause this one, the name, is 100% connected to what happened in that house)
Their performance “while I’m still here” from the same VEVO concert is phenomenal.
Oooh
That whole concert was special I feel blessed I got to go
I think you called it, "Pig" is a metaphor for that thing we can't let go of that holds us down and motivates us to keep up whatever bad habits we're keeping up because of it, which puts us in "that cage". It is part of the downward spiral album, which is mostly a narrative of someone losing their shit and still able to come back at the end. Yes, Piggy was Trent's nickname for Richard Patric and yes the album was recorded at "le pig", but Trent and Richard have gone on to say that thos things are mostly just coincidence. Also, with 5 kids and a wife, Trent is completely sober during this performance. 😅
Hey, I just discovered your channel today and I want to say I like the vibrant positive energy you bring to your videos. Keep up the good work.
Thanks so much 🤗
I mean Trent Reznor always said when he says the word "Pig" its in the eye of the beholder, it could mean Miss Piggy if you truely believe it does lol
😂😂😂😂
When I was a child, I sold all of my Super Nintendo games, console and controllers so I could buy an N64. One of the first games I bought was Wave Race 64. I listened to this album from start to finish as I played Wave Race 64. Multiple times. My favorite song is "I do not want this." It is nastolgic now, playing, listening, not worring about the world. Then Monday comes around. Life.
Piggy is about Richard Patrick an early collaborator. They had a falling out and Richard went on to form the band Filter. It’s also part of a concept album so it’s also an aspect to a downward spiral into depression. Losing your friends.
Oh wow
Hey just to add to this, all of the nice things you said about pigs apply to Richard Patrick.
Um...what the hell are you talking about? This has nothing to do with Richard Patrick. It's from a concept album about "The Downward Spiral" of a single person. Where did you get that from?
@@jirshb3302 According to the Filter biography on their official website, former live guitarist Richard Patrick reportedly received the nickname "Piggy" while in Nine Inch Nails. According to Patrick's Filter bandmate Brian Liesegang, Reznor was very upset when Patrick left the band and wrote the song "Piggy" about it shortly thereafter[1]. Patrick gave the story behind his nickname in a 2013 interview[2]:
One evening the day before some studio time with Trent I took a girlfriend to a Skinny Puppy gig. I was watching the sound check and Ogre was on the mic shouting "WHITE PIGGY" over and over, I found it really funny. When I got back to the studio and we were setting up, I keep doing an impersonation of Ogre and after a few minutes Trent shouted to me "Hey Piggy, shut up and play some chords man!", and the name stuck after that.
www.nin.wiki/Piggy
@@jirshb3302Richard Patrick himself said that, but Trent never talk about it. Anyway who cares? This song just part of a huge story of The Downward Spiral. It's all we need to know about. All this roumors is hard to verify
Kinda shocked they suggested this one out of their (his) entire discography... I'd recommend to react to "Terrible Lie" live at Woodstock 1994. One of the most infamous sets in all of rock. This song (and the long intro 'Pinion' they use) give such a strong dark and aggressive tone, but it still gets you going. This was the first song they played at they got on stage, and nobody knew what was gonna happen next.
They’re completely sober. Trent is a true musician. Everyone there is a part of the wheel, where he records almost every instrument and vocal in the studio, especially for this album.
Sober now, absolutely not when this was written.
One of the most influential bands of modern music for a reason
Trent does not use drugs Queen look at him on stage is completely physically fit and has been clean for some time. Trent has NEVER expressed what this song is about but when you listen to The Downward Spiral it's about someone's descent into madness and it's an entire experience. You listen to it all and when Trent sings it's about feel and you believe him.
This song was originally written and recorded in Le Pig, a studio built at Sharon Tate's old mansion, where Charles Manson's Family killed her, and wrote Pig in her blood on the wall.
This song is actually about drilling third holes and pig being addressed is the ATF.
I'd love to hear you react to much more of his music. He's got a very very diverse catalog.
Oooh!
for something more uplifting listen to 'We're In This Together' from The Fragile album, for something more intense try 'March Of The Pigs' from the same album as 'Piggy', The Downward Spiral
Respect & Peace ☘
Nice!
Rugby Hits till I collapse
Will make these Hockey players look like they are playing Patty Cake.
Oooh! I’ve not seen rugby before!!
You should listen to the entire album, The Downward Spiral, the track makes a whole lot more sense when listened to with the album in its entirety
Oooh 😲
This libe version is great. You should listen to the album version too. It's the bass and drums that drive this song.
You can tell she likes it
For all intents and purposes Trent is clean, has been some for some while. For all intents and purposes however, this album was called The Downward Spiral, recorded in the Tate House in 1994 and Trent was dealing with some shit, including substance abuse.
Finally got a good nin live reaction! Wow! One of my favorite live nin songs.
🩷
I’m sure it’s no coincidence that the word “PIG” was written on the door in blood during the Manson murders. The same house this album was written and recorded in.
Oooooh
I've seen them live in 3 different states. They're amazing.
yes, he's talking about muppets.
On the ketamine vibe takeaway, something to note is that he was pretty deep into heroine addiction when he wrote the song. Not a bad takeaway at all lol.
Oh wow, yes I could see that. How sad 😔
@@MaddyReactions it's okay. He fully recovered and has a lovely family today 😊
@@Gr13fM4ch1n3he nearly died from a heroine overdose China white to be exact and it’s because he was a huge cocaine addict so your close
It is a part of a concept album
It is a single piece of puzzles
The ep, Broken, is, and always will be NIN at its perfect zenith...a match between immature rawness and mature creativity. The song Wish is absolutely brilliant...
Oooohhh, interesting!
Yes, wish is amaze balls!!!
it's just Darcy without the 'e' bit
according to a former guitar player in the band the song is about him leaving the band
Trent was living in the Sharon Tate murder house when he wrote this, where Pig was part of the graffiti on the walls when the victims were found in 1969 - Charles Manson murders
the song is 30 years old
i first saw NIN live when they toured this back in 1994 in a little 800 person venue... i have NIN tattooed on me - BEST band in the world
Respect & Peace ☘
Oh awesome!!
Likely on drugs when written by the lead singer (and main person in the band, who usually writes and records almost everything himself). Not on drugs when performing, at least not him. The atmosphere (lighting, mood, sounds) is pretty typical of their shows and music, though this song is more bluesy and slower than most. The band is known for their uniqueness as far as atmosphere and sound landscapes. The lead, Trent Reznor, has won a couple of Oscars for his scores for The Social Network and Soul.
Makes sense
Pigs are a motif that Trent uses to refer to greedy people or selfish people. I’ve heard this song is about former guitarist Richard Patrick now front man for filter, they have performed together recently. So I don’t think their strife is as bad as Trent’s and Marilyn Manson’s.
Nice! Do mor NIN!!!
Cool! 🤗
This like is for the ¨Ketamine vibes¨
😂
yes
love him
Super unique!
Any song off of the Pretty Hate Machine album. One of if not the best albums ever.
Oooh
Closer from them is great
Ohhh 🤗
I'd have her react to that one after at least a handful of others. Closer is a bit of a shocker lol.
Also this is about a ex band member
Trent Reznor is a GOD! I grew up blasting his albums on repeat for years! The entire album The Downward Spiral is musically prophetic!!! You should Really react to NIN Hurt
Oooh, nice!
You miss all the contempt if you left it just on paper. I so dove into NIN when the Pretty Hate Machine came on the scene. Guilty dark pleasure. ANd LIVE....really a different experience.
This is a great song, but I can see where if it’s the first intro to NIN it won’t go over great
❤️
Hey Maddy, Are you going to do American Flags?
Haven’t heard of this one
@@MaddyReactionsThey are referring to Tom MacDonald's latest release.
Я подозреваю что они трезвые ) Судя по их контролю )
💖
Don't get literal with art
Better listen to the whole album to get the messages or else stick to Taylor Swift.
police
😯
I like a lot of NIN songs but was never a fan of this one. Hope you give a different one a shot at some point.
I imagine someone paid you a lot of money to react to this.
That`s a poor reaction... NIN is not for you, maybe father john misty! ;)
Great react please do more NIN
The singer used to use drugs but has been sober for a couple decades now
Thanks
Definitely a song about Kermit
Makes sense 😂😂😂🤷🏽♀️
It’s probably about a past relationship
Maybe lol that’s pretty foul to call ex 🐷 though lol
@@MaddyReactions oh yeah it’s definitely a bad vibe
But in a good way
😂
You can tell she likes it
