Part of the reason I've chosen to never end my life when I had suicidal ideation, is because two people in my life including a family member attempted suicide. I've suffered the pain of being close to someone who tried to kill themselves, even though they lived. I would never want anyone to experience this kind of pain.
Used to listen to this song back like six years ago before I had any knowledge of what the meaning behind the song was. This song is very haunting.
As someone who's attempted suicide multiple times, it can be hard in the aftermath. You're glad to be alive but regret not succeeding. Horrible place to be in.
Same spot here... i have a uncle, my mother's brother, he comitted suicide when i was young, and the tought of making my mom pass thru that same pain and grief all over again stopped me several times... Nowdays i have a baby daughter and she lit a new spark in me, a whole new driveforce... thankfull everyday for been alive and having people who love me so much around me.
I hate people with narcissistic personality disorder
@@robcharters2645 Hate is a complicated feeling, specialy for a psychiatrist to have. I mean... i'm assuming you have some degree of academic basis to be diagnosing people so you can focus your hate acuratly.

When Richard Patrick sings “nice shot” it is because he believed, as many began to years after the fact, that Bud Dwyer was innocent and was railroaded for political reasons. Public suicide was his best way of revenge and making a statement over the corruption that lead to his conviction. It is important to say that it is inconclusive as to whether he was in fact innocent. However, die to the rules in place at the time, he was technically still in office and owed his full golden parachute retirement package until removed. Rather than face financial ruin, his suicide allows his family to receive millions by his death. Richard Patrick is essentially celebrating this. And when he says, “what you could’ve taught me, I could’ve saved some face” is a dark reference to his own struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts.
It’s a dark, dark song.
public suicide isnt thought to be the best way way for revenge. he was about to lose all his government retirement and spend most of his life in jail. by killing himself he still held all government benefits and his family was secure. if i recall he also held nice life insurance policy. its thought that his death was about holding his family afloat after what has happened.
caleb morgan As I said that was all part of it. Clearly, demonstrating how far they’ve pushed him publicly was a part of it. He kills two birds with one stone… No pun intended. And also, life insurance doesn’t pay out on suicide. But the golden parachute that was owed to his family substantial. May have even gotten a death benefit through it as well for triple his salary.
He was, in fact, innocent. The prosecution’s main witness came forward years after the fact and admitted they lied under oath and Dwyer did not accept a bribe. He said he was innocent and he was right. I disagree it was some form of revenge. There’s no evidence of that, he simply wanted his family to be financially stable and what he did was (in his mind) the best way to ensure that.
@@theitguy9511 If it was *just* for his family to remain financially stable, it wouldn't have to be public. There was more to it.
"The song was written about the public suicide of Pennsylvania state treasurer R. Budd Dwyer on January 22, 1987 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Dwyer had been convicted of bribery charges in December 1986, and was expected to receive a long sentence from U.S. District Court Judge Malcolm Muir. Professing his innocence and decrying the legal system, Dwyer shot himself with a .357 Magnum during a press conference[2] without injuring anyone else."
The meaning of the song for anyone who does not know. Cheers.~
The cruel irony is, he really was innocent, and was framed for the crime.
Since he died in office, his wife received full survivor benefits. Had he been formally sentenced, by law, she wouldn't have.
@@frankenzion0001 No. He was guilty.
@@patrickstapleton381 No he fucking wasn't.

The singer's brother, Robert Patrick was T-1000 in Terminator 2.
It is about the public suicide of Pennsylvania State Treasurer R. Budd Dwyer.
Funny you compare it to Nine Inch Nails, Richard Patrick the singer and guitar player was a touring musician for Nine Inch Nails.
Good times. I did not know this. I love T-2. The more you know☄
I never knew they were related. That is cool. Thanks for the info! 😁
I believe the lead singer was also the guitarist in NINs Head Like a Hole video.
Rich wrote the song while touring with Trent. It was gonna be a NiN song. After listening ti it it was decided it should be soloized...
@@hmpz36911 - he brought it to trent reznor and trent decided to pass. He sent it out to record companies and got picked up. He was the original "lead" guitarist for NIN (even though trent writes everything except acoustic drums) and backing vocalist on NIN's first 2 albums. The man had some serious talent and Trent should've taken that song, it would have fit good with NIN. I don't blame Richard Patrick. Gotta go with it.
The video of the suicide is all over the web. The guy didn't take his anger on others and actually warned people to stay back, the weirdest thing was how calm he was.
I've seen it before, but now I want a reaction video of it from Vin and Sori
@@spolenmods447😡 you're fucking sick ...!🤔
🤓🤗😁I love it..!
There is a documentary about Bud Dwyer that shows how he was set up.
His calmness wasn't weird AT ALL. He KNEW what was about to happen, He KNEW he was about to die and he had made his peace with it. The possibility of death brings nervousness and anxiety while the certainty of death brings peace and calm.
Because he was ready, he really didn't want to do it but he was ready
That bass line always gets me. I've always loved this song.
Drop D🤘👍
They stole it from Stabbing Westward - Ungod
Godsmack - Keep Away has basically the same bass line...
@@Scizyr, they didn't exactly steal it. Stuart Zechman, the guitarist who provided the riff to Stabbing Westward, was one of the founding members of Filter, and had provided the riff to Filter before he left to join SW.
@@azuredragon7879 You're getting that info from Wikipedia whose source is a fanfiction website. Zechman said himself he didn't do any writing with Filter after the computer crash that erased everything. He also said him and Hall wrote Ungod together and it was deeply personal to him, he put more effort into it than anything else he'd ever written. It makes it so much more shitty that Patrick stole the riff to use 2 years after Ungod was written.
It's widely believed that Dwyer was completely innocent. Something he professed until the end, as he de-cryed the corrupt legal system. I believe he actually committed suicide so that his family would receive financial compensation that would have been denied had he been convicted. I believe the singer here is praising him for this and genuinely believes he was a good man.
He was 100% innocent.
@@dream_in_digital Untrue.
I’m sure others have mentioned it, Filter’s singer Robert Patrick was a guitarist during the early years of Nine Inch Nails.
I definitely suggest checking out their song “Jurassitol” from The Crow: City Of Angels soundtrack. Great soundtrack, I suggest checking the whole album out, especially the PJ Harvey song “Naked Cousin,” Hole’s cover of “Gold Dust Woman,” and my favorite version of Iggy Pop’s “I wanna Be Your Dog.”
Budd was wrongfully maneuvered into a place where he felt completely trapped. Not just him, but his family as well. His public suicide on television was meant to be a political statement against the injustice of the court system, as well as way to get financial compensation for his family. It wasn't very successful, because there is still rampant injustice, but the fact that he had the balls to even do it to try and affect change is what's being celebrated here.
Anyway, Filter is pretty good. This song is easily their most well known track (it has been on numerous soundtracks and commercials), but I wouldn't say it's their best. Look at the song Under from the same album; it's my personal favourite track from Filter, much more complex and insightful lyrics on that one. It also has a really freaking good bass line.
Hell No, Where Do We Go From Here, Soldier of Misfortune, The Best Things, Welcome To The Fold, American Cliche, etc. Lots better songs. This is still a classic song though! Also these two, talk about a terrible review. The dude has no clue who Richard Patrick is and that he actually was a member of NIN! Do either of them even know what the Industrial genre is?
They don't have to know who Richard Patrick is to review the song. I'd actually prefer a review that comes from someone that's not a fan or its not into the band/genre as it probably comes without the baggage that whole fandom brings along.

First heard this song on Tales From The Crypt - Demon Knight, and I know that a lot of you did too :)
Maideneer great movie from my childhood, absolutely!! Loved the show too lol
Omg yes the driving scene
Same here been jammin this ever since. Demom knight so underrated
Yesss! Such a sick intro. That kid with the jaw is still scary af!

You know Filter. They did that song “Take A Picture” that was massive.
Great and best song
Great song

Hey dad, what do you think about your son now?
I remember this song coming out when I was in 6th grade and buying the album shortly after hearing it. I was always really impressed by Richard Patrick's voice. He has a very distinct sound.
R. Budd Dwyer stood up for what he believed in. He was railroaded by two guys who worked under him who lied on the stand to frame him. This is a song about protest against the judicial system. He was innocent and denied a plea deal but was convicted in court because two people lied on the stand to get a lesser sentence for themselves.
One reason it sounds like NIN is because Patrick played in NIN.
Also, Sori's transition from loving the song to being completely shocked and disturbed once Vin explained the meaning behind the lyrics was priceless.
Filter and the crystal method-trip like I do (spawn soundtrack) (one of the best soundtracks ever
Jurassitol on Crow 2 is awesome
God I loved that soundtrack. I really loved trip like I do and the for whom the bell tolls remixed with that bass line...
I saw Filter live at Trees in Dallas in the mid 90s. Lost a toenail in the pit. Short bus is one of the best albums start to finish from the 90s. The band was formed by two guys who started out in Nine Inch Nails and they kinda combined elements of Industrial and Grunge. When this song first came out everyone assumed it was about Kurt Cobain killing himself.
I’d recommend Jurrassitol if you want to explore them more.
I was at that show at Trees in Dallas. Frank Cavanaugh is one of my dear friends.
in the lyrics it sounds like he is actually honoring Budd, "You fight, and you were right but they were just too strong." Like you almost feel the struggle he was going through and he felt he had no where to turn.
I like the long form reviews and appreciate how thoughtful you both are.
Thank you Vin your words definitely make sense, forgetting those hatred people 100% don't pour your energy into these people they feed off it pour all your energy into yourself, you and only you deserve that . Been down that road and i because hatred of life didn't know why I was here it confused me badly. Ignoring those waste of my space people has slowly changed my perspective on my life and I am starting to get back on my track in life.
Much love to you guys.
So many other "Reaction" videos are just so forced and fake that I couldn't watch them. You guys watch/listen to the whole song and then give such heartfelt reactions that it's so easy to relate to. It feels like we are sittin in your living room just talking about life. We may not agree about every point of view, but you present them in a way that commands respect. I just found your channel today and I subscribed after watching the first video. I love how you may not even initially understand the context of the song, but still give a great review. Absolutely love the long format and really digging in to the social issues behind each song. Keep up the great work!
You’re not going deep enough into the politics of it, Patrick was a supporter of the guy and saw the injustice. Keep this in mind and everything comes together. BTW, Patrick was part of Nine Inch Nails prior to forming ‘Filter’.
Rich only heard of Budd after his death. Rich wrote it in 91 while touring with Trent who was from PA. Budd was just a Treasurer here in PA. He was not a politician, just a family man tbat got into some bad stuff. Then many saw copies of the footage and heard made up stories after the facts got twisted more and it became a big a worldwide thing. Mostly people only see the suicide part and do not even see the speach before. All really quite sad...
You're welcome. You guys have the most thoughtful, thought provoking reactions on the internet.
I saw Filter at The House of Blues in Boston opening for STP a few years ago. Good live band. The lead singer is also the lead singer of a band called Army of Anyone. 😁 I also just learned from another commenter that he is the brother of actor Robert Patrick. Thank you for that wheresatari
!
You guys are awesome and I have been with you since 7K!!!
Your exactly rite. It is like a disease when those thoughts come around. They take over your life, but yes...when you break free and see that the only people that are going to suffer are the ones that love you. All the others are just going to move on. It realy opens your mind and makes you appreciate the one who love you even more. Life is so precious, especially when you are finaly able to be free. Love you guys, this channel is amazing!!!
Based on your guys' conversation at the end, I can tell you are great. Love the messages at the end about suicidal people, or at least people with issues. Insightful.
Also, surprised you knew what the song was actually about specifically. Good job, subbed. I like people like y'all.
This song is so powerful... LOVE IT!!!
Love the song, he sings his brother acts, talented family.
I always believed that first part of the song was sarcasm. Some years later someone came out with evidence that Budd Dwyer was completely innocent. So the IMHO It's from the perspective of Budd saying to the man who found the evidence I wish I would have met you before I committed suicide that evidence would have exonerated me. That and the Irony that if Budd hadn't committed suicide they probably would have never looked into his innocence so "Hey Man Nice Shot".
I disagree, his life would have been over financially and irreparably regardless of future exoneration. We would not remember who R. Bud Dwyer was or why he lost everything. I don't condone his actions but I can understand them. He had a circus of a mob calling for blood a kangaroo court calling for him and decided to give them what they wanted on his terms and in a way that would make them think and never forget. I disagree with his decision as it was selfish his children have the same stigma whatever he does but one choice leaves them with a father and the other says fuck you to the world.
I think the song is perfectly literal and applauding his actions.
You guys are the best!!!
Vin and Sori, I just subscribed! (I thought I was already subscribed.) Your videos are really great! I love the idea of people exploring and trying new things, especially with music.
Hey man, nice reaction.
Boy brings up some awsome memories Lov it
Great choice! Thanks!
mah gawd you put this out and I didn't notice, observant I am... Love this song.
I love this song because it has the quintessential 90's sound and I was a teen in the 90's... Anyway, it was a snow day and it was shown on the news in the central PA. And an uncensored version was shown on a station in Pittsburgh. So kids home from school saw it. Budd Dwyer became a folk hero because he essentially triumphed in his suicide. His death allowed him to avoid sentencing, and he never actually resigned before his death and allowing him to avoid huge fines and a draconian prison sentence. His wife was able to keep his pension and survivors benefits. His suicide was the only way he could exert control over his life that snowballed out of control.
The singer/guitarist Richard Patrick is a former guitarist for NIN. His actor brother, Robert Patrick, was the T-1000 (disguised as a cop) in Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
According to the biography on the official Filter website, Patrick was nicknamed "Piggy" during his time with Nine Inch Nails. According to Brian Liesegang, Trent Reznor was very upset when Patrick left the band and wrote the song "Piggy" about it shortly thereafter.
He spent two and a half years as the touring guitarist in NIN and can be seen in the music videos for "Down In It," "Head Like A Hole," "Wish," and "Gave Up." His only recorded contribution-a droning guitar sound-can be heard at the end of "Sanctified" on Pretty Hate Machine. He chose to leave the band during the recording of The Downward Spiral in 1993 due in part to Reznor not allowing him any creative input or musical contributions, as well as often taking a lot of onstage physical abuse from Reznor. Patrick went on to form his own industrial rock band, with fellow NIN collaborator Brian Liesegang.
While I've known this for decades and got to see Filter open for White Zombie in early 1996, I figured I just copy and paste this brief synopsis from the NINwiki!
Hope this helps!
P.S. about time y'all delved into some Filter!!!
It was a "good shot" because in the face of prosecution he stood up to the powers that be even if it meant ending his life. By ending his life while still in office kept the pension for his family. Basically he sacrificed himself for his family's wellbeing financially rather than rot in prison. Right or wrong, not for me to decide.
Keeping it simple, Sori's reaction at 7:26-27, is the right reaction.
Its so rare to see good discussion in music reaction vids. I really enjoyed it
Take A Picture - would be something to ponder
This is why I love Richard Patrick. Dude's great at writing super dark songs from the wrong side's perspective.
feeling the love
The concern on your face is priceless. You figured it out quick. Lyrics are powerful
Been with you guys since J Loren of HURT shared your video! love how in depth you dissect lyrics! Haven't been let down since. More HURT would awesome, but I understand that song was a little traumatic lol

FYI, Filter's singer Richard Patrick's brother Robert Patrick is an actor and he played the T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Also the singer of Filter was in the band Nine Inch Nails as a guitarist before forming Filter. Hence, why it sounds a lot like NIN.

Great song!
love this song!!!! i never knew thats what it was about
I saw the suicide video of Budd Dwyer and really wish I hadn’t. Crazy. This song hits hard when you realize it’s a true story. The saddest part is Dwyer was later proven innocent
I didn't but now that I know it was a true story. It is hard to listen to it because of that.
I didn't see it, I was only a few months old at the time it occurred and I'm from Pennsylvania so it was probably everywhere on the news at the time.
Douglas Show I’ve never seen anything like it. It was so close up and clear. Shot into his mouth and then blood just immediately gushed like a river out of his nose. It was highly disturbing as you can imagine.
I saw the press conference, live, on TV. It was. . .impressive. He pulled the gun out of a Manila envelope, stuck it in his mouth, and pulled the trigger, without hesitation.
The unedited video can still be found online.
Dedicated to Budd Dwyer

On a side note, take a picture off 2nd filter record has a chill grove, except it's about getting on a plane after taking hallucinogenic drugs. Dude took all his clothes off in 1st class. Had no memory of what happened.
I can tell you that most people with ideation do not want to die, they just can't live with the pain/suffering/guilt, they just want it to be over.
Wait that intro!!?
I'm impressed lol
'Welcome To The Fold' (album version) and 'My Long Walk To Jail' are two Filter bangers. Heavy, melodic and of course, epic
Vin- I just had to tell you that as a suicide survivor myself you are spot on about something you said. You were so right on point when you said that suicidal people often emulate those that are successful. I tried to hang myself in 2012 but unfortunately was cut down and revived before I died. But I have felt that same sentiment about other suicides that were successful. I have had feelings of idolization and struggled with feelings of being a failure myself for not succeeding. Anyway, I have been in therapy for the ten years and am in a much better place now... but one thing people seldom understand is that once you try to kill yourself you are forever changed as a human being and after that it gets a whole lot easier to do it again.
Was anyone else told that it was about Kurt Cobain when the song first came out? I was in high school and I heard that too many times to count, but it made sense with the timing (song - 1995, Kurt's suicide - 1994) and some of the lyrics. I was pretty shocked when I learned much later that Richard Patrick denied this and said it was about about Budd Dwyer, whom I had to research. Anyway, this is a great song and is one of the few responsible for getting me into industrial music, one of my favorite genres.
Vin, do you write essays? You’re a damn scholar with this, man 👨🏫
Great Song!! Messed up message? For sure... very NIN sounding (it's what I thought when it first came out).
This is what Richard Patrick said, "If anything, the song was inspired by Budd Dwyer, who shot himself on live TV during a press conference in 1987.
"I saw the raw footage of it. I'm from the suburbs, I don't remember seeing a lot of things like that growing up. When you're 22 and you see that, you're like, 'Wow.' There was no Internet to watch death on... you can see anything on the Internet now. Back then, we were watching it out of fascination of like, 'Wow. We're all gonna die. There was a morbid curiosity. I was watching it and I was all, 'Hey man, nice shot." - Quote
Fun fact Richard Patrick (the lead singer) was originally the lead guitarist for nine inch nails from 1988-1993
First time I heard the song was in "Easy Rider" snowboarding vid (on VHS of course)
I remember this event and everything surrounding it. Thank goodness conviction and sentencing rules based on party affiliations and ideology are coming to an end. RIP Budd Dwyer.
One of the few times i've seen you be so off base Vin. The song is actually a tribute to Dwyer because the shot he took, put a spotlight on the flawed justice system on how it could make an innocent man go to this lengths to show the truth
Don't diss yourselves. You guys are great.
The late 80's / early 90's industrial-metal music scene in Cleveland was a cool time. Richard Patrick and Trent Reznor worked together in Nine Inch Nails until Patrick left to form Filter. You also had the formation of Mushroomhead. And the forgotten band DINK who had a good run for a couple of years. Marilyn Manson grew up in nearby Canton, OH and moved to Florida around that same time to form his own brand of dark Industrial-Metal.

Also by Bob Dwyer getting removed from office for an illegal deed his family would have lost his pension benefits whereas if he died in office his family would get his pension, at the time suicide was a loophole that his written contract didn’t stipulated as a way to not get your pension benefit either, after this incident the loophole was closed.
Also listen to the extended 9 Minutes Mix....NIN and all Reznors "Childrens" ...this is definatly one of the Best !
seems to me he says "amen nation" what I thought he said for the longest time .....great talk
Saw Filter for open for Faith No More at the Concord Pavilion in 95 or 96! Great show! Lyrics are generally not written for the fans. Love the aggression and emotion of the song!
Back in the early 90's I used to frequent a goth/industrial club in Newark, NJ called Pipeline.
Anyway, they had a huge screen above the stage where they would play videos and just backing visuals to the music being played. They used to play the clip of the politician killing himself on heavy rotation on the screen. It was really gross....to say the least.
Fun fact. Richard Patrick from Filter was one of the original guitarists in Nine inch Nails from 1989-1993. Right before writing the Downward Spiral he bailed on Trent with almost no warning. His nickname in the band was "Pig" so the track "Piggy", while fitting into the concept of the record, is also a giant fuck you to Richard.
I like how Vin said it kinda sounds like NIN because the singer to this band was the original guitarist to NIN
There was a band that used the name budd and recorded an album. Budd included steve albini a big producer in rock music.
I think you guys are awesome, to hell with the haters
A local politician got so fed up, he committed suicide during a meeting.
I live not far from R. Bud Dwyer's home town. He is buried in the Blooming Valley Cemetery PA.
He basically got framed by people who he was going to exposed and figured his life was screwed because they were too powerful and would punish him for life. He thought if he's going down like that he'd do something drastic that would stick with everyone who saw it and would feel guilt their whole lives. The singer wanted to meet the guy who'd shock and punish the people there for life.
I remember the day well... I saw it live on the news
The very first major concert I went to was Filter/White Zombie, Seattle 1995. That show kicked so many levels of ass! Zombie was absolutely incredible and electrifying, but Filter was every bit as good in my opinion.
I don't know the actual intent but maybe when he said "what you could have taught me, I could have saved some face" is that Budd had the opportunity to overcome the situation and teach people a positive lesson and to be strong and fight through whatever might be the root cause of the suicidal thoughts. Instead, the songwriter is writing from the perspective of another person considering suicide and ultimately saying he could have taught me to "save some face" but now he's more inclined to go through with it due to this man's sad example. "I wish I would have met you, now it's a little late" then takes on some new meaning as well.
One of my favorite song
Kickass🤘🤘🤘
yalls audio is the shit owwwww !!!!
This song is about Budd Dwyer, a politician accused of fraud who killed himself live on camera. He was, after his death, shown to be innocent of any charges and the harrassment he endured led to a tragic end.
