The Old League of Legends Forums were Insanity

Before they were shut down, League of Legends used to have a forum on their website. Atypical from the normal reddit -type systems we use nowadays, forums let everyone's voice be heard with equal weight. This, mixed with the oddity that is the league of legends community, made for some insane and hilarious posts still archived on the internet. Here is a mini documentary on my favorite posts from these old forums.

"Too much right clicking"
Riot addressed it by creating Yuumi.
GG EZ
it reminds me a lot of the old mordekaiser's voiceline: "you only need to click once, fool”.
@@roxo8250 It sucks when he says that when you only clicked once.
Pro tip: you can watch series at flixzone. Been using it for watching lots of of movies these days.
@Grey Archer Definitely, I have been using flixzone for months myself :D
@Grey Archer yea, I have been watching on Flixzone for since december myself :)
When Riot actually goofed around with us and just acted like normal people, that was the prime of the forums. Listening to Zilean rant about how he hated armoured bears, Iron Stylus talk about armour and his formation of the Iron Solari, Pendragon revealing the incredibly toxic chat logs of people who insisted they were innocent, Rioters always inviting people to just play games and hang out with them, it was amazing. I even remember back when Braum came out on PBE, one of his designers was asking for people to play with him and give their impressions of Braum. I got to play with him and it was such a great experience, since not only is Braum one of my fav champs, but having the actual designer listening to your first impression / giving out little tips and tricks was such a cool memory.
Once the Rioters backed off though things definitely started going down hill, but for a few years there the forum community was very fun, very silly, and just a joy to read through.
It used to be quite fun to just check out some of the latest Red posts as it was a pretty relaxed environment early on. Can't comment too much on whatever happened after the original forums shutdown, but I think it's fair to say that it was a shift.
Back in these days, I managed to get into a party with Tryndamere, the CEO. Played a couple games, after that he gave everyone in the party $10 of RP. Kept him on my friends list for the longest time after that. Especially with the release of Dominion, there were tons of Rioters looking to play.
Dyrus might be knowledgeable about League of Legends, but does he know that Talon is responsible for 25% of first bloods?
is talon even picked in 50% of the games
I knew he was an assassin, but I didn't know he was that popular with ladies.
@@prashantsingh9483 no, as in, 50% of the first bloods of the games he's in

Lol the "remake Heimerdinger's name" comment.
If that person finds out there are now champions like qiyana and xayah in the game, he/she would probably go crazy
love this hope everyone enjoyed this as much as i did personally i wasn't around back then i started at the time draven was released and man do some of these posts make me smile for the stuf we got even if it did take liek 5 years or more to get here
I find it funny that Valkrin made such a dramatic post like that. He always seems so chill in his streams. He was right about not splitting the playerbase, though. Fortunately, Riot still allowed people to play on different servers.
I remember there was one post on here with a guy saying something like "the following champions are OP, please nerf them" and proceeded to list off criticism and rants about every single champion that was in the game at the time. It was kind of like a parody joke post and I just found it really funny lul
This guy probably went on to become Hashinshin
@@markussnorre1757 damn i was about to say, was it hashinshin? xD
Ok ok ok, i got it, those are quite funny, but can we get back to that "remove 'Flash' from the game" part?
It was actually kind of a legitimate thing at the time, because gap-closers were pretty rare at the time. The game's suffered from an enormous amount of mobility creep since then, and flash is essential for immobile champions to have any sort of viability. But back then, it was seen as a get out of jail free card, and it frustrated people a lot that essentially the other summoner spells were about equal in power, and flash was by far the best. You can choose 2 summoner spells, but you really only get to choose 1. To be fair, that's still the case now, but we're ok with it.
I agree remove flash because All add players are special ed and this would make the game unplayable for them so they would quit, then we add revive back to the game and run it down like the good old days
Game is “balanced” around flash. The map is literally made to be using flash. There is no possibility to ever remove flash. It would make champs with low mobility even more unplayable and break the game.
Flashs range got reduced twice. Old Flashs range was way longer.
Don't forget it's been 10 years and people still flash into turret dives only to not right click the enemy for the kill.
I think you missed Valkrin's point, which was that having to use a proxy to play the game with friends on another region is a terrible idea for the community as some people have friends in Europe and North America. As we know now, we are able to make an account on most servers without having to live in the region to play with pretty much anyone. It's a question of having the choice of trading off better ping to play with friends for fun and not being region locked.
He has a point, but at the time it was quite likely that they might have done real region locking, it was a thing at the time in multiple games. Blizzard was asking for home addresses to prove residencies to create a Europe battle.net account for a while. There were also regional releases of games
Yeah and remember that you could play the game together for quite some time only to be seperated in to different servers in the end.
Imagine riot not allowing you to play with half your friends list. That sucks.
When was recall called "Blue pill"? 😂😂😂
its not anymore?

Team Global XP is actually one of the main things I enjoy about Heroes of the Storm, but I have absolutely NO faith that it'd ever have worked for League.
Thanks for reminding me how much I miss the old phantom dancer icon :'(
I'd love some small vids between the docs. It's bite sized content. Even if it's on gbay100, I like hearing your thoughts about things.
honestly started getting use to the documentaries but a vid like this is refreshing, keep up the good work!
Nostalgic video. Worth noting that there were actually different forums prior to the forums you cover in your video -- they started in September/October-ish 2008 and were shut down to make way for the new forums at some point in 2009 (I forget the exact timeline).
I spent too much time back on the GD forums when I was in highschool lmao. I remember there were some hilarious new champion ideas back then in the subforum
Something about the smooth jazz and your voice just get me in the mood for random League of Legends content, Gbay.
Gbay trust yourself when you are thinking of content to make, I think we all enjoy your content more when it's something you have made that you are interested in. I personally have been enjoying your videos SO MUCH lately because you are passionate about the subject you are showcasing

The worm
Its funny how people even now call it the worm haha
I remember reading all of these back in 2011 when I was new to the game and still reading MobaFire guides to pick up new champions...
that's combined with all the old game assets (HUD, Store, Champ Select, Champion Icons, old Sona Ult...)
what a nostalgia trip
i love this, reminds me of the good old gbay videos but its even better quality actually
Looking back at the old graphics and forums really gets the nostalgia sense going, good video Gbay
i like the old map, and most of the old ability visuals (like morgana) the only new thing i really like is improved auto attack animations
Vse10k may be a slavic (thus "vse" in his name translates as "all") - we don't capitalize our "I" word
I was a moderator for the boards that followed these forums for a time and I can confirm people stayed very much the same. Though a lot more complaining about champions and items existing. There were also some good ideas for champions. It's a shame that the boards was never archived, you will be missed boards.
This is making me so nostalgic to my first experiences playing LoL, I used to spend a lot of time on the forums reading people’s terrible champion ideas
I remember a champion idea where the guy really just wanted a champ that uses a ball+chain as his weapon. And the abilities were as follows:
Q: throws chain left
W: throws chain forward
E: throws chain right
R: throws chain in a circle around himself.
😂

These posts either sound like mad ramblings or prophetic revelations. There is no in-between. I love it!
This was a fascinating video. I love seeing what people thought about the game back then.
Loving all these new videos
utterly loved this. would even like a part 2
To valkrin's point, they ended up not preventing people from playing on different servers. He was right. The post you show seems miffed by the announcement but mostly it seems it's the locked down nature they initially announced that was an issue. I think you're kinda misrepresenting him a little.
Nice video tho, GG
I'm not saying his point was wrong. Just how funny it was that a respected and calm guy like him was making such a dramatic post flaming riot like we all were back then.
Plus it's funny how little everyone cared about ping back then.
@@gbay99 Ping wasnt a thing because it was tactical, people werent trying to win games through just micro outplays. Could carry games as support with mobis + shureliyas + oracles and 20 wards to just maphack for your team and deny all vision to the enemy.

yea we had trash ping back then but everyone kinda did so it was just accepted. ah the good times
@@gbay99 well Valorant has the same issue right now with a region lock and the only way to play on NA as an EU resident is to use a VPN when you create your account. So maybe we need to remake that Valkrin thread to get that changed for Valorant!
@@SasuraRdm a couple months ago i had 22 ping, now its steadily 33 ping and i feel like im dying
Its always neat when you talk about the OG league players. Those who disappeared, some stuck around and are still big names today. A "Where are they now" video would be pretty cool to see what happened to some of them.
I can't wait for some online article to spring up in the near future talking about how people used to think about LoL from their forum posts.
Great vid! Maybe you could do another one like this, but about the tribunal
I remember in 2010, every old head was talking how this game isn't better than Dota, it will die in a short time. And now, 10 years later, it's still one of the most popular games.
and 10 years later the only thing that has objectively improved is networking and champion auto attack animations
@@ebolachanislove6072 as if everything isnt subjective lol
@@NihilNick nah though, it's true. Riot did a major overhaul of their netcode and now its *nearly* functional. Also, have you played some of the champions from that time preiod? For years people have been saying that you *have* to buy a skin to play Udyr, because his base skin animations are 9 years old and clunky as fuck. Of all the things that could possibly said to have improved, those are about the two safest bets out there.
I loved reading champion ideas on the forums
I would like to see specific forum posts on patches and see community reactions, like champ releases like leblanc, big changes like the summoners rift remake, shit like that.
hey gbay do you think you can archive some of the more toxic post? (ap0calypse l9 or even the old hashinshin rants)

How do you have access to these board posts? I thought the boards were taken down.
My favorite forum post is the one about Tryndamere, saying that he is invincible because his E gives him so much mobility lmao
Remember that back when Tryndamere was new, there were very few gap closers.
Is there a playlist for the music in this video?

The nostalgia in this one...great video.
I'm now expecting a lengthy documentary on the Battle Bunny Riven thread.
This was really enjoyable. This would be great to have between documentaries, but only if you actually enjoy making them.
Been watching every video for 4 years, these last videos is definitely the best ones! A little gameplay would be fun. But I get it if you don't prioritize it.
I found one of those box sets in a thrift shop last year and the RP code still worked.
I haven’t played league in 3 years still watching your videos
Personal request for a LoL forum friday series?
wait wit's end used to REMOVE MANA? damn I'd love to get that xD
It was a wonderful item... I understand why they removed it, the explanation at the time was they had introduced a number of manaless champions so the item was becoming weaker. But I guess they also understood that it was making mana champions weaker, and so mana potions were needed to counter it and the circle of life continued.
But I really do miss it. Nothing like being able to run a mage out of mana before they full combo you as an adc. It was a decent defensive item. Imagine using it against a level 16 Kass, he's now managable.
I believe Udyr’s Q dot would apply on hit effects with every tick so it was super broken on him.. or so I’ve heard.
@@jiminfested I think the main reason was because they decided removing mana was a toxic effect - Kassadin also used to have this in his kit (he was originally the game's answer to DotA's anti-mage). They removed it as it was less fun to be on the receiving end than it was to be the person doing it.
Tbh I can understand why they removed it from Wit's End, but I miss it on Kassadin's kit. It gave him a more unique niche, and I thematically prefer him as a mage counter rather than an ulta-mobile lategame nuker.
If I recall correctly, it also didn't go the way the design was intended - removing mana was supposed to be a counter to mages, but mages had the most mana and were therefore the least affected; meanwhile champs that didn't build mana were forced into being completely mana starved all the time.
Yeah those pre-ordered boxes just became worth a fortune because of the VERY RARE SKINS you can never get through normal means.

Great content gbay
Wazzabi was truly ahead of his time
The moment I saw the title I knew I was in for a massive treat...
Post more please! Another road beyond diamond!!!!!!
I remember how OP heimerdinger was back in the day though, your bomb could deal damage to towers so you'd just push the lane and slowly chip away and there wasn't really anything the enemy team could do.
Couldn't really gank him either because his turrets were super strong.
I remember when Elementz started making the Champion Tier posts and they blew up in the forums. I used to always check them to see who I wanted to invest points into. Also I always thought TakashiX was going to be a super star. He’s why I originally cheered for V8 Esports in the early tournament season 1 days....but V8 ended up sucking. Which is weird bc they had Aphromoo, Phantomlord, and Tree Eskimo who were all huge names at the time...Aphro still is but he was ADC back then
Also I have footage from 2011 with the original dfg icon so.... Not sure it was removed in 2009.

Sometimes it's hard to watch an hour long documentary, but these are easy to watch, more would be good.

Heimer was very different on release.
He did have a mini rework.
The most noticable difference is he used to have 6 turrets. He could block an entire lane.
