When it comes to new League of Legends champions there's one designer at Riot who's more infamous than all others. CertainlyT. From Zoe, to Aphelios, to Yasuo, to Thresh, to Darius, to the Akali Rework to so many more, CertainlyT has influenced League of Legends in ways that no other individual ever has. Many people hate his champions for being the most broken OP champs in game (200 years memes and whatnot). Well he HAS created some of the most broken 200 years league of legends champions... But today I'm here to tell you the entire reason League of Legends turned into the gigantic MOBA hit it did was exactly because of CertainlyT and his work.
Here's the full CertainlyT interview with Travis Gafford: • CertainlyT: Champion D...

If you can ever find the Q&A with him during a riot art stream in 2017 on Zoe you learn so many new things about his philosophy of fun. also a fun triva like how a beta for zoe's passive became alkali's smoke screen. or how he was upset that they removed 2 zoes being able steal summoners from each other endlessly.
I forgot how much I loved this guy. here is a quote from a Darius Q&A
"I fought to make him an eagle, and his ult involved picking enemies up and drop them on other enemies. Unfortunately our 3d modelers couldn't make his axe fit in the eagle's talons."

And no, managing dashes is not "skilled", having mobility does not make the champion any more difficult to use, it's quite the opposite in fact, as dashes (even if conditional) allow the player to avoid danger with much more ease. To make my point look at literally any single player game made pre 2005. Updates were not common and DLC didn't really exist, yet the gaming community produced not only much better games but also was thriving at the time yet every single player game was by default stagnate. The reason these games are good is because they found a gameplay loop which worked extremely well.

Arguments against him are mostly just delusional mind gymnastics made by weak minded ppl. What akali makes oppressive isnt the fact that she has shroud. You can fight against her shroud with any type of AOE or by managing your positioning. What is oppressive on her shroud is that she gains high MS and before it ends, her massive Q-passive dmg chunks you for fk ton and then she has it in relatively short time again. So whole thing about playing around it is way harder. Just btw, her Q-passive dmg on lvl 1~6 is almost equal to twice amount of Fiora's Q-passive dmg on lvls 1~6 and Akali has 1,5 sec CD on that rotation. Fiora can hit next vital in 1,75 sec but she will have to come to you and expose herself for whole duration while Akali has it as poke. However, while watching this video, I realised that, the champions that CertainlyT designed in particular really does revolutionise the entire game with the introduction of many new mechanics, new playstyles or kits. CertainlyT designed champions that are broken, but at the same time those champions that he designed or reworked is extremely creative, and without him, league of legends really would be dead because it will lack new creative mechanics. Therefore, as weird as it may seem, I would like to say thank you to CertainlyT and express my appreciation towards his design. He has done a great job as a part of the design team in riot games(for real). He is really creative and he earns my respect with his approach to designing a game. Previous patches have been, well, just patches for the sake of "changing" things and there's a clear bias for nerfing popular skill-based heroes just so shittier braindead heroes get played and easy arcana money for Gaben.
The new heroes are also disgusting to play and look at. While the gimmicks were fun at first (Monkey King), it slowly degenerated from there and Spitfire is just deranged. There's no sense to that character.

Like he was a DotA 2 player that cannot adapt to the newer DotA 2, perhaps. I say this because of the specific attack of "change for the sake of change", which isn't exclusive to DotA 2, it's present in League any many other games. A nicely made Gbay video may make us feel good, but does not change this, I think.
Either way, when he's arguing that IceFrog's recent "sloppy" game design favors "braindead" heroes, you can see he is choosing to ignore reality itself. Void Spirit and Snapfire are the latest additions, they are very intricate. Monkey King is intricate. Ember Spirit, Invoker, Visage, these are all intricate. But he chooses to cherrypick something like Phantom Assassin probably, which is fairly straightforward and definitely not favored over something, only favored over what it counters.

Passive: regular udyr gains movespeed and attackspeed everytime he uses a new skill. Certainlyt's udyr passive also gives him ad and crit chance...
Q - regular udyr gains attack speed and his next auto burns the target, scaling with ad. Certainlyt's udyr Q also scales a bit of ap and reduces opponent's armor up to 45% at max level.
W - regular udyr gains a shield and his next auto will heal, scales with ap. Certainlyt's udyr W also scales a bit of ad, the shield would be way stronger btw and if you are at low health you'd get a 30% buff to the shield...
E - regular udyr gains movespeed and his next auto will stun. Certainlyt's udyr E also removes any cc or slows upon using it and also gives you more movespeed if running towards enemies :D
R - regular udyr gains an aoe burn for a while and his next auto will deal aoe damage in a cone, ap scaling. Certainlyt's udyr R also scales a bit of AD and udyr will FLING himself to the enemy (talon Q style), it also reduces enemy healing by 60% (cause why not xD)

Now people are complaining they're too different from how they were and unbalanced, which is true in some cases but if you watched the video it just becomes that way so you can adapt and change game patterns as opposed to staying stuck and ultimately decaying in skill.
You can argue it's why you fell in love with said champ and they changed way too much. But at the end of the day, it's people at the top who makes the decisions and the minority who are left by the wayside. Even if it's not, Riot isn't always the type to listen to their community. “It causes you to learn a lot of new things in order to succeed” I think this is a genius philosophy that directly counters how league players feel which is why no one wants him fired, but everyone hates him.
He tries to invent new mechanics with every single champion. It makes it fun for the people playing him because they truly have an archetype. Nobody can do why your champion does, and if you know more about the champion than they do, you can outplay them simply by learning, rather than mechanics. This means if you want to get better at not just your champion but league in general, you MUST learn how every champions abilities and interactions work. It’s a way of adding skill expression that doesn’t require any mechanics to fully grasp.
Ex: A good Zoe player might ult backwards to hide their long range q.
A great Zoe player tho will ult forwards to make sure they get their W and auto passives off, which provides more damage than a simple long range q.
Viola. You flexed your skills without needing to practice anything in practice tool. A few minutes of reading and thinking made you a better player, and it felt good when you pulled it off in game. That’s what CertainlyT is good at as a teacher. He gives you satisfaction by providing a clear skill ceiling that you can work your way up to. It creates almost like an in-game progression system and fuck does it feel rewarding when you master it. This is why most of his champions are loved by high elo players. When you reach challenger, there isn’t a whole lot to unlock or master, you’ve pretty much won. But learning a new champion could take weeks or even months, and there’s quite a few of them, so you’ll be playing league for a while. I don’t fear plying Darius anymore. I understand how his Q works, I stand inside when I can. I know his W is a good way to reset your auto, so I shield when he pulls me and tries to auto W. I lure him under turret when his passive is on me. I flash before he has time to ult because I know it will follow me even if I do. Learning a champion I don’t play is not only still useful, but important

I love this guy's creativity in designing new mechanics, and at the same time hate his disregard for existing rules. The personal issue I have with the champions he released is mostly centered around them breaking existing conventions (which is fine) and NOT adapting the game to function without them (which is not fine). Example: Before Yasuo's release, whether something was coded as a projectile or not was merely an implementation detail, and varied widely across different champs. This led to situations where champs like Nami could do literally nothing when that wind wall was up (it just made her ultimate disappear, and not even her ground-targeted aoe ability could pass it), while champions like Xerath had kits that could bypass it entirely (at the time). When you have a situation like that, you should mitigate the lost "invariant" of your game together with the champion release by modifying the game to function around them. This is something I NEVER saw happening.
I am really looking forward to the cool shit he can do when making a new game from the ground. This guy has some great ideas up his sleeve, and when he doesn't have to regard any existing rules, this could lead to some awesome play experiences.

6:24 if you look closely, Darius's first kit is very similar to Dota 2's Hero named Axe. Darius's old passive (Hemorrhage) is similar to Axe's Battle Hunger, Battle Hunger is his 2nd skill which deals pure damage for 12 seconds. Darius's ultimate is very similar to Axe's Ulti as well but the only difference is Darius's Noxian Guillotine is scaled on how many Hemorrhage stacks on the target while Axe's Culling Blade has a kill-health threshold (like on Pyke) whenever a hero is on certain health he can execute them instantly, both ultimates have cooldown resets on kill, like you literally have your ultimate ready again.
Note: I'm not mad that he copied Axe, I'm just mad that Gbay calls him "Creative" for creating Darius and Thresh, he just rips off something existing like Thresh's Hook and Lantern which he took from Pudge where Pudge can hook enemies into him or hooking his team mate back to him.
