  • This is a documentary I made on the early years of League of Legends. Season 1, Season 2, the rise and fall of Korea, and the only team that's ever been able to beat them. The Taipei Assassins. It's fun to relive the most hype and best lol moments from league of legends earliest history as well as one of the greatest upsets in the history of esports. I hope you enjoy.

    Ah, memories. Riot Story Time!
When Riot hit #1 in Korea (March/April 2012), they rented out an entire KBBQ restaurant and all the food/drink was free. They bussed us there, we had all the meats and Soju/Hite, and then got bussed back.
I played normals (terribly) at the office until probably 2 in the morning with Nika, Matt Desanctis (the first video production employee at Riot), and a few others from the web team.
I hung out with MakNoon and the other pros brought in for Riot's "Pros vs. Rioters" show match in June 2012 (it was filmed in April but aired in June). MakNoon is hilarious. He loves margaritas. The night before production began, I drunkenly joked that he should play Nasus (which was my Riot name and favorite champion, obviously) for one of the matches (back when Nasus was not viable in competitive), never thinking he'd actually do it. Before the production began, I was setting up the player video cams and he walks up to me with the most serious look on his face and says "I will play your champion."
And he actually did. Not the biggest deal in the world but really cool for me.

I've been playing since 2009 and moved to Korea in 2012 and managed to see the evolution of the game and you did a great job of summarizing it and also bringing up the nostalgia.

I was in school during this time and I remember distinctly that the moment tpa won, the whole school roared. People from different classes and grades were hugging each other despite us being usually more conservative. It was an emotional moment. The saddest part is that these storylines just dont exist anymore, especially on the world stage. as the structure of the leagues has changed, the dominance of the korean teams is so overwhelming... there just isn't an environment that can breed these "royal road" teams and huge upsets anymore.
Think of it this way: if either USA, CHINA OR EUs NUMBER ONE BEST team was to win a best of three against a korean team, that would be an upset.

    • @93Taru

I remember this specific tournament was the first one I ever watched, the grand finals between TPA and AF. I had heard whisperings of this team, and when I learned that they were from not-Korea, I was backing them 100% in the forum I frequented back then. Toyz was the reason I picked up Orianna, I remember being so floored by his performance of those god-tier ults, and I actually managed to get pretty good with her. I remember actually cheering loud enough for my roommates to tell me to quite down at some of the fights. It's a shame that the team fell apart, but for that one series, it was one of the most exciting LoL games I had ever seen, and one that rightfully bloodied the nose of the dominant Korean teams.

  • @michael_wn

This documentary feels like it was made to remember me why i fell in love with League of Legends.
I just began to play the game and already was all hyped with the pro scene. Rooting for Azubu Frost, trolling my TSM Fans friends (nowdays i'm a diehard TSM fan, damn you karma). But one of my friends selected the Taipei Assassins summoner icon and was rooting for them because of reasons, he had no clue about the pro scene and even i, that had some knowledge, never heard of them and was making fun of him because his team was going to be smashed early in the tournament. Jump foward, our group of friends watching the Worlds Season 2 Finals at my home, seeing all of that spectacular match, Rapidstar Karthus Quadra Kill and later on the unbelieavable: Taipei Assassins winning the match and Worlds. This video led me to my eyes brimming with tears. Thank you @Gbay99

Toyz's Orianna, Stanley's AD Nidalee top. These are names I haven't heard in a very long time and honestly and I miss it. As a young kid who just got introduced into league, S2 worlds kickstarted my passion in league as I watch this amazing team crush all the favourites who was bound to win worlds that year. After TPA's victorious journey through worlds they were all over the Taiwanese media as everyone celebrated their victory. Toyz's amazing ori ults and Bebe's ezreal snipes were a treat to watch even after all these years. Although the following season I was introduced to SKT and Faker, TPA remains in my heart as my favorite team ever in league.
Thank you Gbay for bringing back and shed light upon this part of League history. I'm honestly very excited for this year's worlds and I want to see the titan get overthrown again.

Good job! Its a well crafted documentary. Sadly I missed one point - their cheesy strategy. Back in season2 there was no sightstone and all you could (and as shown by TPA should) do as support is buying GPM items (RIP Heart of Gold, Philosophers stone...) and just spam wards.
TPA's superior vision wars was what allowed them to take on the biggest teams. Actually their cheesy strategy (support being a ward machine) became the meta and Riot had to get involved and so support was the first role to get a rework (the addition of sightstone, removal of GPM items and a max. of 3 wards per player on the map...).
They were brilliant strategists who found one simple but extremely strong strat but when the rest of the world adapted, they didn't have much more to show, sadly.

Heart of gold and philosophers stone, good memories used in Irelia top builds lol. Kinda bad memories as support as you couldn't really buy shit. Even though i had over 70% winrate with Janna S1. (Support/Top Main so mixed opinions lol)
Edit: Although they didn't really invent that. Koreans warded heavily too as their meta. And everyone bought wards although mostly support.

I think this game has been around so long, and will continue to be far into the future because of how iconic its stories are. Legends of the game like SKT, CLG EU, Samsung, and TPA have created such incredible stories that the whole player base can cherish and appreciate.
Thanks for this telling of one of League's greatest stories, and here's to many more.

I watched 2012 World championship live and for sure thought Azubu was going to win the worlds. But only to found out, how upsetting it was.
How did I not watch this like a week ago? I thought it would have been long video that won't have much information. It's good that CZcams still kept this on my recommended list.

This honestly made me emotional. I shed a few legit tears. This is what we all started playing league for. The excitement felt at that worlds is what we play this game for. All of us have put years of blood, sweat and tears into this game. How have we lost this sense of excitement and positivity for OUR game? You can blame it on Riot or the toxic community, but if you were to ask me, I feel that as a community we have come to under appreciate what we have. We need to appreciate Riot for making such an awesome game. As well as our pros for exemplifying the spirit of what a true gamer IS. The Streamers for the extra fun we have been able to have with them. We need to reflect on what we HAVE, and stop focusing on the negativity that surrounds us.

Many memories of being locked up in a room with my best friend all summer playing duos while listening to CreepyPastas and eating junk food. Eventually, I would stumble across this exact channel, become an Irelia main.
