Amateurs talk camera bodies, professionals talk glass and photographers talk light....filmmakers talk none of that but what the viewer will see. My guess is almost every piece of equipment used to make Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, even Raiders, has long been destroyed. Same with your projects. They will remain long after your C200 is retired.

I preach this everyday where i work when they ask me the best camera. Filmmakers absolutely do not talk about cameras like that and most understand that their audience gives 2 shiiiits what camera the film or show was shot on. The truth is guys on CZcams that talk about cameras really care about what the other CZcams guy with a camera is going to think instead of worrying about their true audience lol

C200 is more than good enough if you know what you're doing and invest in things like production design and lighting. Your work looks fantastic and the improvement you would get to moving up to something like a Red or an Arri would be marginal.
Honestly, I do think when investing in a camera package it's a good idea to get something that is a workhorse. For me it was a rigged out bmpcc 4k but a C200 has everything you need: internal NDs, XLR audio, good battery life, autofocus (not necessary but helpful for certain shoots), and 12 bit raw when you need the extra colour information. Having something with these features means you really don't need to upgrade as cameras really aren't getting THAT much better anymore. Honestly, getting something like a blackmagic pocket camera and rigging it out or getting a used C200 or C300 II is what more people should do.
Keep up the great work! Cheers!

Came here from Daniels video. Nice channel. On this topic, I always think of it like this: A carpenter can use the same hammer for 20 years until the handle breaks - and then he just replaces the handle. Even a new hammer just still hits the same nail. A hammers job is to hit nails.A cameras job is capture video. “Leveling up” isn’t about a new sensor - it’s about everything you mentioned in this video. Very practically I might add. If a carpenter wanted to build a better house, a new hammer won’t do it. But perhaps better techniques or a better crew that pays attention to detail would make a better house.
    Cheers.

Still delivering award-winning, broadcast content using the C200. For sure there are features that are frustratingly absent... but there's an argument for sticking with a camera, getting to know it, understand its limits; in the process, discovering how to light for it, filter, tweak settings, etc. And then use the money you save (from upgrading every six months) to invest in quality cinema glass that maximizes the C200's ability to render colours, reveal contrast and detail, extend the perceived dynamic range, and make beautiful, organic moving images.

Excellent video Matt. I bought my C200 in late 2017 to go straight into production on a feature documentary. I shot with it for two years, largely on the ocean. The C200 was and is a beast, I was accidentally fully submerged with it, riding on the nose of an 18' Boston Whaler in 10' waves. I had to pay Canon for new internal fan and over the course of the project, two more LCD screens where saltwater spray got into the monitor. But the camera itself just kept going. The C200's RAW is amazing. Adding a Tentacle Sync E into Ch 3 takes care of the the time code issues. I do miss not having a 12G SDI out, one more SDI out and TC/genlock in but I can live without those.

I love the image it is a bit of a challenge to deal with the eight bit colour but you just have to be more discerning and accurate in lighting and exposure but it gives off an awesome image and at the end of the day that’s what it’s all about most of everything that gets delivered ends up in 1080 P in any case so I agree with you I’m in no rush to upgrade the camera I’d rather invest in lenses and good filters dollies and camera gear in general than investing in a camera

Really great video - I still shoot on the C100 M2 and I was bitterly disappointed by the C200 after it came out after waiting so long for a 4k successor to my workhorse C100. Just too little too late. Terrible internal code, card - eating "light" RAW and crazy price at the time. OK Canon finally really cut the price but even at a "reasonable" price this camera is still really showing it's age against the competition (this coming from a man still shooting with a almost 10-year old camera!). If the C70 had come with a EVF, even a optional EVF, I would have bought it immediately. If Canon had just upgrade the C100 to 10-bit 422 4k and made some modest improvements they would have sold a million of them. And you remind us all of the most critical thing to remember - at the end of the day it's easy to make excuses for not creating content because your gear is "not good enough" A great compelling story, with good audio and editing will look great no matter what you shoot it with - Content is KING, production is Queen!

I am in the market for a camera right now, Canons offerings are either way more than im going to pay for features I wont use or they cost a lot and then dont have features i really need or are old. Sony has cheaper cameras but they all have horrible dynamic range, poor codecs and really bad rolling shutter and the lens options kind of suck. Panasonic is only worth it if I got a gh6 but I dont really want to do micro 4/3 and blackmagic cameras are pricey dont have the best quality control which is scaring me if one died if i bought it. Kind of feels like going with canon and taking the hit and just going with and adapting a camera that isnt ideal is the best choice tbh.

I had a C200 and really loved it. The main thing that made me upgrade was that I already had a canon mirrorless photo camera and had been investing in RF lenses that I wanted to be able to use for video, and I wanted a camera that gave me a better image straight out of camera. My wife’s company does livestreams twice a week and the image right out of my C70 is leaps and bounds better than my C200 was. I have students who are so good, and I tell them to do it. I teach film history, which is essential, and structure is also important, but not as important as Doing the thing.

@MattAitia both times where stedicam docking fails. First time the cstand must have been a chaep-o because the leg had a slight bend and I guess the nut was loose. (Wasn't my stand) the most recent time a lady brought her kids to the set (owner of the building we where shooting) and siblings got into a shoving match infront of a stedicam dock that had one of my c200s on it (mom wasn't paying attention to the kids and I was busy getting the next shot ready) and one kid pushed the other into the stedicam dock and knocked it over..... I thought forsure the camera was toast because it slammed HARD. It ended up taking no damage somehow (maybe the shape cage saved it?) Only thing that got damaged was the battery that was in the camera and that was also just an easy fx of popping the battery case back on. I was shocked! Ohhhh man was that an emotional Rollercoaster for like 5 mins 🤣🤣🤣 I've never seen a lady yell so badly at those kid tho... almost felt bad for them.... almost 🤣
