What I love about the R5 (and wish I had an R5c) is you can shoot full frame or cropped frame in 4K. The makes the 28-70 2.0 the lens for virtually everything.
Unfortunately, most of my clients ask for content that is virtually all practical lighting making an FX3 the Ideal camera. Man I don’t want to reinvest.

I was one of the ones who should have bought a C300 mkii but ended up with a C200 at the time because I preferred the body and monitor design so much more. The C200 is a great camera, but in the end I had to move to a C70 that 10bit codec. There were just too many jobs with the C200 where a client wanted the files directly for another editor work on, and I found myself floundering around a few times trying to explain that I'd have to either shoot in 8bit, give them massive raw files that wouldn't play, or make them wait for me to transcode and send the files on later. It's a shame though because the raw from the C200 is incredible looking.

It’s not mentioned really in this video maybe because it’s so obvious, but gaining the ability to use Canon’s stellar new RF lenses is also a huge reason to upgrade to the R5C. Of course there’s bonuses with using EF lenses too (the ND adapter mentioned.)
The 50/1.2L and 70-200/2.8L are just an absolute joy to use, it feels like every time I’ve used them I can’t help but make stunning images. Can’t wait to see the future of this channel using this wonderful new camera.

As used prices go down, like you said, this could see the c200 becoming even more popular as a budget option. Thanks again for what was a quintessentially perfect reflection on the c200. In terms of design the c200 hit a sweet spot for sure for so long and for your set up it’s true that you don’t really need the ergonomic design that is really about being an operator camera rather than a static talking head. Not sure why you would need still but I guess who doesn’t find it handy at some point. Something sad about a dslr design replacing a fully featured cine design but it’s a sign of the times. Personally I might recommend a Komodo for this kind of thing too not least because of the solid autofocus but also the app integration. Although if your set up never changes then there are so many candidates but for educational or instructional work being able to easily output a view of the camera data is incredibly useful. I appreciate that that isn’t what you are doing here but for lens tests having the menu feed out with the image through the sdi without covering the image is very nice and all that data and easy monitoring on a phone or iPad is fun. Thanks again for a simply perfect video and an appropriately loving and respectful send off to the c200.

Great video! I own a C200 and love the camera but there are four big problems.
    1. The massiv RAW files - just 35min using a 256GB Cfast 2.0
    2. Power hungry - I only get maby 80min or less with a A30 battery. You definitly need at least 4 batteries for the whole shooting day.
    3. Low Light - With F2.8 your max Iso is 2800 before the noise is noticebal.
    4. No false color and the monitor is just showing Rec709 or Clog1 picture.
I hope Canon add a software update just with the C300 Mk2 feature shooting with 2k 4444

    @bend2847 Před rokem +3

The tech spec obsession (which is encouraged online) causes real confusion for people. The C200 sold very well and plenty of professionals earn their living from the 8-bit files (image quality happens in front of the camera). The ‘why oh why no 10 bit?’ is a Comment Section issue much more than a real-world concern.

Noticed you use sticker labels on your cfast cards. It may have never been an issue, but for me I have encountered the occasional melted sticker getting stuck inside the card port. So, personally, I don't recommend using sticker type labels, and instead write on the card with a sharpie (I know it's not as pretty, but melted glue sucks).

Hi Jake. I have a C200. Brought it for an amateur 'cinematic grandson' project. Auto focus was a strong sales point back when I started about four years ago, The codecs may be 'only' 8 bit but they are high quality implementations. Now grandson can run faster than I can hobble so I needed a wide range zoom lens - hence the XF400 first followed by the XF605. Still use the C200 on a tripod for 12 bit Raw Lite filming when I want to control depth of field - I self built a very powerful at the time workstation to handle it and I use a Solid Pod slim to manage media costs. I'm keeping the C200 to experiment with HDR - more useful to me I think than 8k - just got a small monitor from CVP to give the ooomph needed! I've been using Canon products since the A1 still camera came out ....... thanks for the valedictory video!

R5c under controled environment is a beast, but when I go out especially in the wild, I find its DR is bit behind c70 or fx3, which all pretty compact and kinda share same using area, it's a shame that I have to use v mount battery for some function to work. i've never used a c200 myself but did use the c100II as a daily driver for like 2 years and i have to agree with a couple other commenters here - the ergonomics of these bodies are just sooo good. specs are important and these bodies do look very weird at first , but for some jobs i'd still happily use a c100II or the c200 because they are such a joy to handle. i might have overseen it but did you mention the EVFs? they might not be the best EVFs out there but at least they are there. the only thing that really pissed me off about the c70 was the lack of an EVF, a huge oversight IMO.
something like the c70 but in a c100II/c200 body with a couple tweaks like an RF mount and an updated grip that is easier to rotate would be awesome.

I never used the C200 but know the C300MKII by heart and LOVE the Cinema EOS Line of products. Truth be told : in may, I bought a Pocket 6K Pro because it was what fitted my limited budget and had what I wanted in a camera (4:2:2 10 bit and anything 12 bit internally, internal ND, at least a Super35 sensor, internal XLR inputs and useful monitoring tools) even if I don't like how it feels cheaply built and how bad the rolling shutter is. Anyways, all that to say that if in may I had more money, I would have gotten a C70, and I'm actually right now thinking of selling the Pocket 6K Pro to get a C70 OR an R5C (I'm more leaning towars C70 because it is a more practical package while the R5C is basically, to me, the low cost alternative to a RED Monstro 🤣... But external NDs and the Tascam thingy for XLR inputs, and a bit of rigging and power solutions quickly add up).
Anyways, great video. I actually have students (I sometimes teach in the Cinema School I graduated from) really interested by the C200 so I'm forwarding the video ASAP !

I skipped over the C200 and went straight from the C300 MKII to the C500 MKII. For a bit, I was also using the original EOS R as a gimbal camera but the image quality drop compared to the cinema cameras made me give it up when I figured out how to get a C500MKII on a small gimbal. The R5C seems to get quite a bit of flack due to battery life, AF, etc. from hybrid shooters, but I have no qualms about mixing it in with my C500 MKII's. It suffers a hit in DR available, but it actually works better as an S35 camera due to the over sampling of the sensor for 4K. It is the first Canon DSLR that truly makes sense as a production camera.

I'm debating between an R5C and R3. R5C main con being battery life and I don't know if I need 8K whereas with the R3 I get enough pixels with 6K and I get impressive battery life. But it's also a non-cinema camera so the menus are different and not as great as the C300's and C70's of the world. Tough choice.

R5C plus the power base link is a total win. Absolutely love the combo

As always great video. How do get such a great image shooting w/ the C200’s base ISO 800, without getting so much noise?

    • @getfmlr

The answer there is light! If there isn't enough then there's not other option than to introduce light.

@@getfmlr No. That’s not the answer because I’ve shot in sunlight even over exposing ISO 800 one stop and still get ugly noise. And if I am forced to ETTR expose to the right (over expose) then why shoot at that base ISO if I am losing dynamic range doing that. Anyways, I figured out recently that IS0 640 works good without losing too much of the camera’s dynamic range and very little noise.

How about the audio on R5C? And handling in running around?

I am wondering how big the filesize of the 2k raw is? Is it using the Full Sensor width?

It's criminal that Canon nerfed it so hard with no 10bit 422, why oh why they basically doomed this fine rig.

Can anyone answer how the extended nd (8/10stops) looks? Is it useful or is there bad colour shift etc. Thoughts.
It’s one of the main reasons I would choose this camera over the c100mii

It's ironic to see this video. I'm in the process of debating on selling it. The C200 could have still been amazing if it had 10bit. I'm placing mine up for sell now. I'm switching to Sony. Canon still doesn't have audio in slow motion 120fps. Sony codecs run smoother. I've even shot with the Pocket 4k and 6k. The raw files on those cameras run smother than the 1080 files on my C200. I never thought I'd leave Canon. After 5 years, I'm a believer that Sony won't handicap their camera's. They've only become better. Sony is the New Canon.

If Resolve is fixing your crashes, why not use it for everything? ;)

We've tried a few times to migrate to Resolve, but both myself and Sam edit so much faster in Premiere as it's what we've used for years and with the fast turnaround nature of what we do, speed is crucial! Jake
