The Three Stooges were an American institution like none other. They were an ever-changing line-up trio of vaudeville and comedic entertainers that were extremely popular during the 1920s to the 1970s. The Stooges' signature styles were slapstick and physical comedy.
Six stooges in total appeared during the comedy team's run, while only three were ever active at any given moment. Moe Howard whose true name was Moses Horwitz and Louis Feinberg's Larry Fine were mainstays throughout the act's five-decade spanning run.
The third stooge was originally Shemp Howard AKA Samuel Horwitz, but Curly Howard eventually took over this post for some years before Shemp Howard stepped back in following Howard's debilitating stroke in 1946. Later, after Shemp's death in 1955, the third stooge's position would be occupied by Joe Besser and 'Curly Joe' DeRita.
Curly Howard was generally considered to be the most popular and recognizable stooge. His high-pitched voice and signature expressions such as 'nyuk nyuk nyuk', 'woob woob woob', and 'soitenly' in addition to his gift for physical farce, improv, and athleticism made him a fan favorite.
Sadly, after Curly's massive stroke in May of 1946, Howard was forced out of show business. He continued to suffer from serious health concerns and had several additional strokes before dying at the age of 48 on January 18, 1952.

Curly did indeed love dogs but there was never a clause in his contract that he could bring them on set. Imagine a scene being filmed only to have a dog start barking. Same with babies - you won't find them on sets either.
There is a CZcams video circulating that claims Curly found homes for about 5,000 dogs, which is also not true. Those close to Curly estimated he found homes for a dozen or two, which is still a lot but 5,000 is a ridiculous number. :)

To this very day, he is still as hilarious and great as ever. It's too bad that he suffered serious health problems, which no doubt can be related in part to all the head shots that he took. Curly was an extremely versatile actor, he was playful and silly for the kid in all of us, and also witty and at times a raunchy girl chaser, to make the adults laugh. In every scene he seems to be going all out, to give the audience a laugh, doing whatever it takes to make each of us feel good inside. His older brother Shemp was his real life mentor, who he idolized which is why they had that similar childish impish style. Many comics have tried to copy him, most notably Lou Costello, but none have come close. Nyuk, Nyuk, Nyuk

When I was a kid he was the favorite of ALL the kids, I think because his schtick was the most childlike; he seemed like one of us let loose to be as cool and goofy as we wanted to be. Curly was one of a kind. I believe most Three Stooges fans would consider him their favorite Stooge. It may not be well known, but Curly did some solo shorts without Moe and Larry. Interesting note, according to Wikipedia, this year (2022) marks the 100th anniversary of the Three Stooges. Granted they worked with Ted Healy from 1922-1934 on Vaudeville and on film before leaving him and going on as a trio. Moe, Larry and Curly split with Healy for the same reasons Shemp left the act in 1932 (Healy's alcoholism and temper) to be replace by Curly.

Curly was always my favorite. I had no idea how tragic his life was, and that makes me sad for him.

He needed two drugs they didn't have at the time. One a good blood pressure pill and a blood thinner to help prevent strokes. He more than likely could have lived to be in his 70s or 80s before he started having health problems. Some people talk about simpler times but it could be a living nightmare without modern technology.
