Man, I used to watch the stooges as a kid in the 80s and they were always awesome. Even though there's bonking and slapping going on I think what's seriously underrated is how smart the comedy actually is. Like the scene in this documentary where Curly is writing down morse code and Moe asks him what is says and Curly responds seriously "beep beep beeeep beep"... that sort of thing would be hilarious in 1920 and it's still hilarious in 2024. Anyway, what a great act.

He was in the original trio when they started and he left after like 10 years and then Curly luckily stepped in, and I think 14 years later Curly had to quit because a stroke screwed him up, and Shemp came back until he died of a heart attack... I never did watch anything that didn't have Curly or Shemp in it.... None of the other stuff was true 3 Stooges to me.... Still isn't....

You don't hear the name Ted Healy these days. He is forgotten. Had he treated the original Stooges better that might have changed. But to say that there would be no Stooges without Healy is just ridiculous.

    • @TheDoctor1225
      @TheDoctor1225 Před 9 měsíci +20

It's true, in a way, in that Healy was the originator in that it was "Ted Healy and his Stooges." He originally had the role that Moe took up (and this was from Moe's own words) and their being with him allowed them to come together and develop their own styles more. The assertion made is supported by many independent sources on the Stooges as well and since we'll never know "what might have been," I would respectfully disagree and say that the statement is an appropos one. (Of course, bear in mind that anything said by Ted Healy, Jr. is going to be automatically suspect as he would normally take the side of his father and paint him in as good a light as possible, considering how much the Stooges completely overshadowed his father. You can see that pretty much any time he speaks)

This was well done! I’m glad I saw this because I never knew much about the Stooges personal lives or how the other Stooges really came about after Curly. As a matter of fact, I always thought Curly was one of the original stooges like most people. I never heard of the last guy, “Curly Joe,” So now I’m gonna have to look at some of the movies he was in with the other stooges.
In my opinion, Curly was the funniest and more popular Stooge followed by Shemp. I always thought Larry was hilarious as well, and of course Moe was the glue that held them all together. Every now and then I’ll watch old footage of the Three Stooges on CZcams and I laugh out loud every time. Believe it or not I liked that movie that was made, not too long ago, about the Three Stooges. I thought they captured their likeness and mannerisms almost spot on.

One could say that Curly actually was the original third Stooge of "The Three Stooges" because it was only after Curly replaced Shemp in Healy's troupe, after they permanently parted with Healy and became an independent act that Moe, Larry, and Curly were called "The Three Stooges". They were never called that during their Healy years.
      To reiterate:
Curly replaced Shemp in Healy's act. Shemp replaced Curly in the Three Stooges.

Started to watch this and saw that joe and curly joe were included and that was it for me... what a terrible dis service they both were.... I realize that Moe and Larry wanted to keep it going, but they weren't even in the same realm as the 3 Stooges had been up to the death of Shemp... It was truly all gone... even as a kid I never once watched an episode made after Shemp died all the way thru... I tried and it was just not watchable.... and I never watched a single cartoon or their movies either.... The Three Stooges Legacy ended when Shemp died... The years with Curly of course were their biggest/hottest years, But Shemp was one of the original trio for like 10 years before he quit and Curly luckily got in there after he cut his hair off, then HE was with them for like 12 or 14 years before a stroke forced HIM to have to quit, and Shemp came back until HE died from a heart attack... Shemp had like 6 more years in the Stooges than Curly actually did.... and I remember as a little kid the very first time I saw the train episode with Curly and Shemp at the same time, I knew something wasn't right with Curly how he acted and the way he talked... I sensed there was something wrong and it wasn't until I was a young adult that I found out that THAT episode was the last one that Curly ever appeared in and the only one where the 3 Howard Brothers were in the same episode in like 34 years of filming... I still fall asleep to them on DVD once in awhile.... I'm a die hard for Original Stooges... The Howard Brothers and Larry fine... Had a very dear friend that had Larry's hair and nose.... We'd go drinkin sometimes and he would just crack EVERYbody up... He was hilarious without even tryin.........

Back in the 1970s, I was in the attic looking through these used TV Guides, for the Letters to the Editor - one letter said, " How about a Ted Healy film festival? I've never seen my father's films. " by Ted Healy Jr.
I thought then, why doesn't he go to a library, look thru a movie reference book and copy down ALL the movies that Healy made; around that time in the 1970s, KTTV Channel 11 was showing "Dancing Lady" (1933) and "San Francisco" (1936) constantly - in both, Healy plays Clark Gable's assistant ...

I want to watch this...but I think it'll depress me. The Stooges always put me in a good mood because they remind me of my great childhood with my beautiful Grandpa, who died in 2006 when I was 18. He always watched Andy Griffith show, Carol Burnett Show, I Dream of Jennie (He had a thing for Barbara Eden...and yeah I don't blame him.) and OH DAMN, he loved his John Wayne movies.
I always preferred The Stooges and he would always be a great Grandpa and make me laugh and happy. Even though I didn't live back that far...times were certainly better, even in the 90's. I feel almost blessed to be a 90's kids and to have been raised in the last Normal era/decade in the United States. "Entertainment" from Hollywood today is just pathetic at best and sick and twisted and blindly idiotic at worst.

It's such a stroke of luck that they were able to get a good quality interview from Mousey Garner. He was about 95 years old when this was filmed, and died before the documentary even came out. In fact, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have been able to find anyone who worked with Ted Healy and the Stooges if they'd waited even another few months to film this.

The stooges, Bowerey Boys and the Abott and Costello TV show were Sat staples...usually in that order here in NJ in the early '70s.
    Our local, "cheap" stations, 5,9,11.
    Mostly 11, WPIX, in NYC.

Shortly after his dramatic role in "The Bravados" (20th Century Fox, 1958), Joe DeRita joined the Three Stooges.
By the time the film hit the "last-run" movie theatre on the block, the neighborhood kids were shocked to see new Stooge DeRita's character shot dead in the middle of the forehead (with his eyes open!).
    "Nooo! They shot Curly Joe!"

33:02 - If anyone at Columbia truly thought this, they were daft. Moe and Shemp did not look very similar or even necessarily related. On the other hand, Moe was nearly a dead ringer for his eldest brother Irving Horvitz (check out the pictures!). They also had another brother Benjamin "Jack" who looked like none of them.

Why does everybody compare them ? I loved all the different Three Stooges. I grew up in the 1960's and saw the reruns on WPIX Channel 11 in New York City, & it was actually Joe Besser who i saw first not Curly or Shemp. Joe Besser years after The Three Stooges voiced a cartoon loosely based on I Dream Of Jeannie his character was an apprentice Genie named Baboo it was by Hanna Barbera in the 1970's . Curley Joe Derita i caught in a rerun of Bachelor Father. And Moe Howard made guest appearances on The Mike Douglas Show. No complaints they were all funny. I immitate Curly, Shemp, & Moe voices. Emil Sitka, & of course I can't remember his name he was African American he also apoeared on Our Gang The Little Rascals a few appearances on The Three Stooges as well. All of these I mentioned i liked them all. Soitentenly, Ruff, Cut it out, You See This , This house has gone plum crazy.. Hey Moe! & hsnd me that piece of pipe. Beeb, beeb, beeb, beeb. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂
All the cast of The Three Stooges I treasure all the performers. 🎥📽️📺❤

I was so crazy about them! Made me laugh so much! I watched them for at least 2 Generations. Ummm... when my so was about 3 hrs old at the time. When I first put it on, he didn't know what to make of it. I was 19 at the time. Didn't realize how violent it probably was to him. But, being a young mother, he eventually thought it was funny. Every Saturday afternoon, at that time.

My dad who was born in 1892 absolutely loved the stooges whom he referred to as the 3 smooges . But the stooges gave us good clean comedy for many years. Unlike what is called comedy today with all the vulgarity. The only people that use such vulgarity are lacking in their vocabulary. You don’t have use bad language to be funny. The old comedians are proof of that.
