DIANETICS. If you ever read the book then you'd know why people act this way.

I am surprised to know this if it was true. There was never any hint of it on the series that I was able to intuit, so if it was true, they both did a very admirable job keeping it out of their performances. If it was true, though, it makes me feel sad because I liked both actors and their characters. I have heard of other actors who worked together but did not like one another. Olivia de Havilland was said not to like Richard Burton at all. So, who knows? I do get the feeling that Montgomery was very intelligent and that the real truth is she did not like doing the programme at all, at least not after 5 years. It had to be soul crushing work to keep doing those scripts that long. I always felt the series went on far past its true heyday, something that usually does not happen in British telly comedy. After Bewitched ended, Montgomery did go on to prove just how versatile and talented she was. She tackled some really serious roles and did them very well. In fact, she did those roles so well that I have often thought that her own personality was much more serious than the comedy role might indicate. I heard somewhere that she, and others on the programme, were alcoholics. Anyone know if she was an alcoholic? It might be that f York did say some unkind things about working on the show, that is what stuck in her craw forever after. After all, she was no just the star, she and her husband's entire livelihood rode on that show, and they kept it going far, far past the time it was still fresh and good. That tells me that they needed or wanted to milk it for every penny they could. Everything else being equal, I think Dick York was a truly decent human being "in real life," and it makes me very sad to know how his last years were spent in poverty and illness. Maybe it was the fear of poverty that pushed Montgomery and Asher to keep the show going for so long past its prime. I cannot recall now where I read it, but I read somewhere that Montgomery passed at home from cancer and that as the final hours or moments drew near, she wanted NO ONE around her. Instead, she chose to pass alone in her bed in her room whilst Foxworth, her children, and perhaps other family were kept away. I am not criticising her for this, but I do think it says something about who she really was. I do not think she was anything even remotely like Samantha in real life.
