- Their slapstick stylings were never going to be confused for high-brow comedy, but the Three Stooges managed to make a big impression on kids and adults alike. Despite the absolute silliness of their act, the lives of the Three Stooges were quite tragic from an early age, as one was bullied horribly in school and eventually dropped out, while another suffered a terrible injury that could have ended his life. Sadly, the tragedy only continued as the Stooges began to make their mark on comedy. Let’s take a look at some tragic details about the lives of the Three Stooges.

The quote of curly saying "ill never be able to make the children laugh again" really hit me. I hope there is an afterlife of some kind, and i hope he knows that even in the 90's, when i was born, he made me laugh a whole lot.
Same here.
Well said brother.
@ty kirby I'm 17 and same
There is an afterlife. I know because it has been revealed to me in Jesus Christ. I humbly ask that you seek him and he will reveal himself to you. We have all done wrong in our lives and have fallen short of God's perfect standard of righteousness. But he came to the earth as a man in Christ and suffered a painful death to redeem us back to himself. You and I broke God's law, and Jesus paid our fine. Thats why his last words on the cross were "it is finished" it's because the debt had been paid for all mankinds' sin, and all we must do is forsake our sins, and turn away from sin toward our suffering Savior, Christ. He then gifts us with a new heart that loves goodness, I've seen him do this in my life. It's truly supernatural, if you humbly ask to know Christ and read the new testament gospels, he will truly show you who he is. Thank you and God bless you!
Just know Curly you’re still making us laugh where ever you are.
My Dad loved the Stooges and remembered them even as he was dying of Alzheimer’s. His laugh was a treasure for me .
I lost my dad three years ago and my story is the same as yours.
I hope both of you find the happiness and closure you seek. Happy New Years.

@@Nomorewarsforisrael I’m sorry for your loss .
I’m sorry to hear,
Happy new year, let’s make it a comeback year.
They all had a difficult history and they were great, but I have an admiration for Shemp Howard because he was one of the original Stooge, then went on to a successful solo career and then had to leave and come back to The Three Stooges because Curly got sick and also to help Moe and Larry so that these two wouldn't be unemployed and the series ended.
Shemp did agree to fill in for Curly until he was able to return, but that sadly never happened. Also, after Shemp died, moe and Larry thought of making it with just them but had Joe Besser join them as the third member of the act. But it didn't last that long and then the second Joe aka curly Joe came along and the rest was history.
Shemp wasn't JUST an original stooge with Ted Healy...He was the HEAD stooge, beating up on his little brother Moe and Larry...But after Shemp left Ted Healy's act, Moe took over as head Stooge in the Columbia shorts...so when Curly had to retire and Shemp came in to substitute, for continuity's sake, Moe had to continue as Head Stooge and beat up on his older brother Shemp as if Shemp hadn't earned his stripes...That's what family does for one another...at least, back then...
Curly's last words hit me hard, I'm 27, they were all dead before I was born. Thanks to my dad introducing me to the Stooges early in my childhood I will always be a fan, and I think Curly would be happy to know that he was still making kids like me laugh long after his death. God, rest their souls.
Me too, my dad introduced them to me as well, they was part of our family, miss them
@@gwill3019 It seemed that all the changes that took place with the Stooges involved the third Stooge. First, Shemp leaves the act because he was tired of Ted Healy's drinking heavily, and the poor way he treated the Stooges. Second, Curly was hired to replace him, and made 97 shorts before suffering the stroke that ended his career. Third, Shemp returned and stayed with the act until the day he died in 1955. Joe Besser was hired to take his place, then Joe DeRita was hired to replace him as third Stooge.
thanks brother nice to see a fan of a fan still loving slap stick! now go on! before i poker you in the eye kid
The same with me, Curly's words on his last day on set make me want to cry
What were his last words?
Moe's life was not tragic. He was an extremely generous and caring man. He loved his family immensely and helped them when times were tough. A brilliant man.
Well said and well put ! He invested his earnings well & had a comfortable home & life in the Toluca Lake portion of Los Angeles. He had a long happy marriage to his wife Helen & was a devoted dad to his children (Joan & Paul). He played a tough guy on the screen but in real life he had a heart of gold !
@@jubalcalif9100 Down the street from Bob Hopes house in Toluca Lake.
@@thinkforyourself6953 Really ? I had read in many places that Moe & his family lived in Toluca Lake but had no idea he lived near Bob Hope ! Thanks for your follow up comment ! :-)
@@jubalcalif9100 Your welcome, I did a remodel in Toluca lake many years ago on Moorpark Drive, where Bob Hope and his wife Delores moved back in the late 1930's. Moe and his brothers live in Toluca Lake close to Bobs mansion. Toluca Lake was at one time full of celebrities in the early years of the entertainment industry. Burbank had many studios.
@@thinkforyourself6953 Yes indeed ! I've read that Warner Bros and Disney studios are both located in Burbank, along with NBC's studios. And also read that one of my favorite character actors, John David Chandler (1935-2010), lived in the same apartment in Toluca Lake during most of his career.
Moe, Larry, Curly (and Shemp) were the greatest comedy team that graced this planet. I'm in my 50's now and even though I have watched them my whole life I still laugh uncontrollably to this day.
I gotta hand it to Moe for his hard work for trying to keep the Stooges floating during his elderly years.
He might have needed the money because the studio took advantage of them and never paid him what he was worth.
Shemp: The indispensible yet underrated stooge
Agreed, it's crazy how off screen the being smacked and all really hurt his feelings.
The Sound Effects editor was the unsung hero of the Stooges shorts!
Amen to that !
The best one ever is the cymbal crash when Shemp and Larry double kick Moe in tha pants and send him flying into the next room in All Gummed Up.
I completely agree, the Stooges were great, but those sound affects were awesome
The drink glugging will always be my favorite
I love the slap and guzzling of the liquids sound effects
I love Curly, but Shemp is actually my favorite 3rd Stooge.
I know, he’s not the popular choice, but if you get his style he’ll make you laugh till it hurts.
Rest In Peace, boys. May you never be forgotten!
I met Larry across the street from Capitol Records around 1970. He was a very nice guy.
Bullshit!

Curly’s personal life always made me so sad. Rest in peace to all three of these legends. (edit: can’t forget Shemp! **all four**)

So sad they were not compensated properly for their Talents. Rest In Peace.
I started crying when I heard Curly’s last words.
Same, little did he know however, he still makes millions of people laugh for ages to come
They were and still is the best comedians consisting of more than two in the group, It's a damn pity they were ripped- off from the studio that made millions from them, Almost like a couple of boys down here in Tennessee who could have signed pro contracts with baseball teams and pro basketball and pro football but would have a gave-up third of their salary to the powers who rule Tennessee with sadistic and brutal ways, they refused and now have poor jobs making low wages.
@@whiskeyrun4996 Uh if they were gonna be pro they'd still be rich even minus the third. Sounds like they made a bad choice
@ whiskey run. Granted it is just a matter of opinion, but the greatest comedy group/team was The Marx Brothers. The greatest comedy duo was Abbott & Costello.
@ moon beam. First of all, the Marx Brothers definitely did not "suck" (as you crudely characterized their brand of humor) as a comedy team! Most fans of comedy movies including myself disagree with you. Second, although The Three Stooges were funny, slapstick humor does not require anywhere near the talent of more sophisticated, better written comedy such as that displayed by The Marx Brothers and Abbott & Costello.
My all time time favourite.
Without curly , I stopped watching three stooges. I’ll love them until my last breath on earth. Love 💕 & Respect ✊🏻 for Them. Legends never die, they always live in our hearts ♥️.
Curly was better than Shep for sure.
Scott BikeDawg Shep was his brother & he was only working cause Curly was ill & hospitalised. Curly was certainly the heart of three stooges.
You should have watched the Shemp features of the Stooges.
Shemp was A1👍👍.
@@bikedawg I like them both equally. They were just different.
Moe was the brains of the act, but Curly was the heart and soul. Shemp did some good stuff, but I just never thought he was funny.
I wish I could've met them, Moe, Larry, Curly *and* Shemp.
Love and respect to all the 4 stooges. I actually liked Shemp the best. He had a uniqueness all his own. Thank to moving pictures they can live forever. If the films are preserved.
Unfortunately most of the silent movies made, no longer exist.
Columbia ripping them off daily.
Then cutting Shemp's pay in half, when he filled in to save the series, after Curly's death.
Hollywood has been a gang of thieves since it's beginning.
I honestly couldn't pick a favorite Stooge. They were all great.
Moe, Larry,Curly,Shemp.
The funny thing is, most classic stars got into showbiz for a quick buck. Even those who did it out of "love for the art" eventually dropped that for the money.
I've read Larry Fine's biography, where he admits the Three Stooge act was work, no more. And it paid well, so he liked it.
These guys are legends. I remember watching them as a youngin' with my grandfather in the early 2000's, and I found them entertaining even then in that time period. RIP Stooges.
You are young glad you love the stooges
Same watching them in the early 2000s always had me laughing at their jokes or stunts
Shemp is underrated but his films are just as funny as Curley. Love both.
I have the honor of being able to say that I am related to moe, curly, and shemp. I remember being a kid and watching all their shorts and laughing for hours. I now have all their shorts on DVD and I hope their legacy and their skits live for generations to come so they all can laugh and smile.

The Three Stooges were a big part of my childhood. As soon as I got home from school the TV went on to catch several of their "shorts" before dinner. I'm 61 and all my peers love The Stooges. In work, three of us occasionally reminisce about one of their classic episodes. I read that Curly had a kind heart for dogs and wherever he was he always managed to come across a stray dog or two.
The Three Stooges will always be one of the most legendary shows in TV history. Always.
I remember when they all passed except Curly as he passed several years before I was born. I loved them as a kid and I still love watching them
Curly was my favorite, followed by Shemp. I still love watching re-runs of the Stooges!
They crack me up!! Only my Uncle & I love the Stooges, everyone else thinks they are stupid.
R.I.P. Stooges!! Wise guy....🤣

I'm only a teenager and I've been watching "Stooges" my whole life. My dad introduced me to them at a very young age and they've been part of my life ever since. Though I find them harder to watch without Curly, Shemp is still great.

The Stooges were something that my mother and I shared and I share them now with my children. The greats are never forgotten!

I remember reading, when Curley hit the floor and started spinning around, it was because he had forgotten his lines and the act stuck.
I had major surgery as a kid and it hurt to talk or laugh but i remember watching these guys on the little tv while quietly laughing..thanks guys for helping me heal. RIP always remembered.
I remember as a kid staying up late to watch/catch episodes of the Three Stooges. Till this day, I'm 36 now, those days are still some of the most memorable moments of my life. Laughing so hard till my stomach hurt or I couldn't catch my breath was a common occurrence when ever watching the show. Even today, every now and then I'll tune in to watch a few episodes and still catch my self laughing uncontrollably at times. Man, I love these guys.
The Three Stooges were part of my Saturday morning Lineup on TV when I was way younger. I still love them.
All four were extremely talented, and overall, highly underrated! As a kid, I remember running home from grade school, so that I would get home in time to watch them on tv. Curly was my original favorite, but through the years, Larry has taken that spot. The laughter that have brought to many generations will last forever. God rest their souls!
You say Shemp's second stint with the group was short lived, but it was 9 years. That's a good chunk of their shorts career with Colombia. I would say Joe Besser's stint was short lived.
As I so when I take off my hat, you make a good point !!
They got not even a thank you from Columbia. They're physicality and their humor is top notch, to me. Absolute hilarious guys.. I will always love the 3 Stooges. Moe, Larry and Curly!

I used to watch 3 Stooges every saturday afternoon on channel 9 in the 90's
I watched these guys in 1950/1960s. Would hurry home for school or get up early to see shows on Saturday and Sunday
If the 3 Stooges were on TV in the modern days they'd get kicked out of Hollywood for doing black face. Everyone would scream racism.
I already thought of that, probably a lot thought about what is happening in 2020. Glad these fellas are long past-- a lot has changed and not for the better.
Grew up loving these guys. They had impeccable timing and always gave it 100% in everything I saw them do.

Shemp was my fav for a while. I liked his hair. When Moe would smack him in the back of the head, his hair would fall from behind his ears and drape over his face.
I had the extreme privilege and honor to have met Moe and Larry when I was a kid, I had a picture of them and myself which was lost in an apartment fire. I grew up watching the Stooges, I still love watching their shorts and still laugh until my sides ache.

Say three names to at least 1000 people in any country in the world.
Mickey MOUSE, MUHAMMAD ALI (I used to play in his family's home as a kid, but that's another story) and the THREE STOOGES.
Now, who.recognizes any of them?
Now, say HARRY COHEN (or COHN, or...well, whatever).
Soooo, who's he?
The prosecution rests its case. Period.
At what?
Curly's death hurt me so much. My mom and I love the guy. His mannerisms, the funny noises he used to make, and his love of animals. He was a great guy despite his personal demons.
The fist time I watched the stooges I was little and horribly sick with the flu. My dad came home from work and said he had a surprise and wouldn't tell me what it was. He pulled a DVD case out of a Walmart bag and put it into the player and told be to watch it because it would make me feel better. Gotta say, still the hardest I have ever laughed in my life. Kept replaying it over and over again.
Wow they still make me smile! 😃 Thank 3 Stooges for the memories & laughs!
Me and my 10yo boy watch it still to this day just like me and my dad did when I was young. My father remembers when he watched them with his dad too. It goes to show that no matter what pc cancel culture society wants to push comedy will transcend through generations. RIP stooges you've brought laughter to generations and undoubtedly many more to come.
Absolutely shameful how the studios treated these comic talents because of 'ownership'. The star makes them money but get treated like turd. The Stooges were almost bigger than Laurel/Hardy (who also faced studio b.s.)
I grew up with Stooges shorts in cinema in the 70s.
Kids were afraid of Moe (lol) and adored Curly's antics.
I'll never forget, i was about 8 years old. I got a few 3 stooges videos for Christmas. I can still vaguely remember the whole family sitting around on Christmas eve night 1984 laughing until our stomachs hurt. There was something so special about that night. I wish I could have froze time. Anyway bc of that night, I've been a stooge fan for life.

Love The Three Stooges! ❤ Curly was always my favorite, so it always saddened me that he died so young. A few months ago, I came across Curly's grandson's CZcams channel. The apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. LOL 🙂 It's heartwarming to see that he is keeping the laughter alive. ❤🙂 He and some friends create videos with very Stooge-like comedy, and they also traveled the country with a live Stooges act. His name is Brad "Curly G" Server.
I discovered that when they did a PSA about the Coronovirus. The actor who played Moe in that video did a fantastic job. When I saw Curly G appear my reaction was, " He does resemble his grandfather!"
The Stooges were always my favorites, never failed to make me laugh.
I grew up watching the 3 stooges. Now I'm almost middle aged and still continue watching them while carrying on Curly's iconic " NUK NUK NUK " and other favorable sayings. The 3 stooges will live on forever !
I love these guys...they kept me laughing when I was a kid and still now. It’s awful how they were treated by Columbia and ripped off by their manager. RIP Fellas and thank you for the laughs.
Funniest and best act; I loved them when I was little. Such such hard lives; shame in those who cheated them. 😞

This is just so well done...the film clips and details are marvelous!
Always surfed the channels, lookin for them 3 Stooges . . . loved them !
My heroes. I enjoyed watching them growing up and learned many life skills too. Most of all to try hard and never give up.
I didn’t know until recently that all 3 of the stooges were dead before I was even born. I used to love watching them when I was young.
It's weird, for whatever reason, I thought Larry Fine had lived until at least 1994. No idea why I thought that.
Same here. Growing up in the 70's there were plenty of black and white shows still on. Mostly syndicated I think and those actors were still around. That's the way you think when you're a kid, there all here. It's a bummer looking back now but at the time for me the Stooges could not have been more alive!
I'm getting up there in years, and still love to watch the humor of the 'Three Stooges' the humor is not only timeless but, depending upon how you understand it, it can be taken down to four layers. They were funny, and anything but dumb - their timing and acting was impeccable!
Also it gives you a great view of what things you saw back then. The street lamps were beautifully made and the shops had elegant touches. The furniture and houses were fantastically sculpted. You saw how people dressed and acted towards each other back then. And the vernacular along with phrasing was a bit different and interesting to hear. Definitely a trip back in time!
I loved these guys growing up and now I introduced them to my children. Still making all of us laugh to this day. It's sad how their lives all ended. Larry was always my favorite!!!
Moe didn't die 3 weeks after Larry died, it was 3 months.

I remember as a kid growing up in Australia watching them at 5:30 am every morning..... in one episode they played carpenters who were mistaken for couture designers. Their fashion show was inspired by the Dali paintings of dresses with draws built into them and fabric draped from them... I think Dali designed the costumes.... but I'd need someone to verify that .....

Loved watching the stooges as a kid. Now my young kids love watching them too. Their lives on even now!
Damn they had hard lives and they still managed to make us all laugh now that's talent.
Their lives weren't as hard as is depicted in this video.
Everyone had a hard life in those days. These guys got lucky compared to the rest of the greatest generation
