Well long story short, the debris cracked my rear Haldex case. Ouch. I got a flatbed to take me the car to my dealer for repair, well $5000 for the Haldex and $1000 to do the repair. Nice! Thanks for breaking that down for us. I had thought the new AWD still was based on a Haldex system, but with the new E-diff in the rear.
    That said, how does it sent the power to the rear to begin with? Is it using a center differential, or a transfer case? IIRC it's always sending 50% of the torque to the rear, but those clutch packs can engage or disengage completely to, essentially, make it front wheel drive if wanted. But I'm just curious how they designed the tranny to split the power front and rear...?

    I not a race car driver but I’d love to be able to just lock the back end up or just have a solide spline shaft mating to two half shafts transferring power to the wheels.
    I just want to be in control of the power train and lock out power distribution settings so I can trust the more on snow courses or roads.
    But this is coming from a guy who used his e39 540i m-sport and mazdaspeed mx5 throughout snowstorms along the south west side of Lake Erie from Cleveland to peak n peek and back. My corvette was only used in light snow do to the wide rear wheels not wanting to dig in deeper snow.
    I did use snow tires on the bmw and had thinner wheels on the backend but that was only a rear wheel open diff which sometimes needed help more help when forced to go slowly up snowy hills in the valley … I should have put an lsd in to help transfer a little power to both rear wheel when I had the car.
    Now I’ve toasted the mk7 golf R’s rear clutch pack and want to get a proper mechanical lsd rear end for ease of maintenance… plus I want to drive the car or die trying instead of being driven around when I get to disable all the driving aids and let loose in safe environments.

      @@Duif_RS6 That is not true, you don't have to believe me go to the BMW site and build your own. The Golf R with DCT is $45.5 K, the base M240i Xdrive is $48.5K and comes with a lot more than what you get with a Golf R, like a far superior drive train, engine, Brembo brakes, better interior/exterior, and it is a BMW and lets be honest, brand names have value. Personally I would pay a bit extra for custom paint for $550 and the performance package for $2400, so my version would be $6K more than the Golf, but you could choose to forgo those options and have a far better car for only $3K more.
      If you are already spending nearly $50K out the door for a Golf, what's another $3K - $6K? If you are telling me yes I can afford $50K for a Golf R but $53K? If that is just to rich for your blood, then you probably shouldn't be buying either one of these cars.
      The whole point of these hopped up econo-cars was that you could get similar performance to high end cars but at an affordable price. They were always compromised in other ways, like esthetics, style, material quality, ride... but we did not care because for the money you got similar performance to cars costing a lot more. Now the price is is only barely below the high end options, but they still have the same compromises, at these price points this car does not make sense.

    • @JoJoJoker
      @JoJoJoker Před 2 lety +4

      As far as I’ve read, the S3 gets the older system (or more basic Magna system). The R gets the Performance Pack differential which is only available on the RS3. So…the R has a better AWD system than the S3. Along with the sunroof, the R gets the win this time around.

      @nycyabber7103 Před 2 lety

      @@JoJoJoker, I think the Golf R has slightly bigger brakes while maintaining a lighter weight as well. It's a shame because I def prefer the interior of the S3, and I find that this newer gen is a considerable difference in quality with the S3 surpassing. Still, it's a hard buy because of the lack of these performance improvements that went into the Golf R. Personally, I think they should've done what they've always done and just built the same exact chassis and powertrain.
      As an 8.5V S3 owner, for my next car, I'd like to have the upgraded performance of the Golf R. Still, I'm not really willing to downgrade to that interior, especially with the new infotainment system. I also don't want to drive the slightly "inferior" S3 model.
      Thus, I'll probably consider an alternative to my long-loved VAG selections. Might just avoid all the bullshit with the newer cars and get a 2018/19 M2, haha.

    I get why many car companies default to FWD or RWD on AWD or 4x4 trucks and SUVs and cars to help save fuel and to help reduce wear and tear. But with some SUVs and trucks and maybe crossovers the driver has the ability to use AWD or 4x4 as they please without the car saying when it is appropriate. Actually I think we have seen this on the Audi Quattro in the 80s. So, why can't people who have this type of AWD where the car defaults it let say FWD say when they want to use the AWD system?

    Do these look like they are going to be able to get fitted to the previous gen golf r’s, I can imagine some people would like the drift mode.

      anything's possible with enough $$
      that said it probably requires additional sensors and programming beyond just replacing the haldex. Personally I'd love to see it but it'd be hella expensive

    • @ericmichel3857
      @ericmichel3857 Před 2 lety +4

      Not a chance, the cost and work involved would be absurd. There were some options for a mechanical rear LSD for the MK7 but it was not cheap.
      If you really want a rear biased AWD sport sedan, you are much better off just buying one from the start. BMW makes a really good one, and for just a bit more ($3K) you can get the 240M ix with that sweet and vastly more powerful turbo six.
      The Golf R is getting far to expensive for what it is.

    It’s cool for driving but from a service point of view. Don’t prefer it if what you say is true about the 3 sections that may be serviced with different fluids. Other than just VW diff fluid from a single fill and drain point.

    Can you connect the mk8 adjustable dampers onto a mk 7 with adjustable dampers?
    Also can you all do a less flash but useful informational video on how to properly clean grease and maintain your sunroof.
