    True about the information availability. When I built my first engine and car I relied on a MOTORS manual. Still have it actually. Awesome reference source. Wish I had the whole collection.

    Don’t worry about something “completely different”. Lol TH400 stuff is ALWAYS interesting. I’ve been eyeballing that B&M pan. The prices really jumped on those. But it honestly looks like the very best pan for TH400.

    The 400 Chevy is a small block yes but the big block is actually a 402 c.i. I've never seen or heard of a 400 BBC.
    I use to have to drill 350 heads to use on the 400 small block

    I'm glad you showed how you add a drain plug. I've been thinking of doing the exact same thing. Do you tighten the bolt in the nut before you weld it inside the pan? Looks like doing that with a flat washer might help keep it flat against the pan.

    • @mountainsgarage
      @mountainsgarage  Před rokem +1

      Just I just snug it up and tack it, then remove and weld it up.

    You can use muratic acid to strip the coating off bolts and nuts if your in a pinch... just don’t leave any out it will rust stuff in your shop and rinse parts with water ...

    the trans u want is a 02xx 400r turbo it will have 02xx welded on the bell housing they are good to 800 hp stock they have the heavy duty 8 bolt pump heavy clutches stage one shift kit stock saves a lot of money on a build . they are called strip or heavy application transmissions and it has a o ring on the tube which is better. u can get them out of heavy trucks and motor home but most have the 450 hp 454 in front of it on motor homes . they are perfect for a street build but it has most of the parts to build a 2000 hp trans they are from 1980 to 2000 still with the o ring on tube they sell them as a crate trans. i got 4 setups free in the last 2 years with the 450 hp 454 modeled after the 70 chevelle 454 ho

    When you mark the dipstick at the top of the pan rail for the full mark with the pan off, after installing the pan do you add the transmission fluid to the mark cold and run the transmission to get it warm and refill to the mark? If so it would be normal to show overfull when the transmission is cold?

  • @morganc.2783
    @morganc.2783 Před 2 lety

    You mentioned using the small yellow tag on the side to identify the transmission. Do you know of a resource to decode it because I can't find a reference "84 MF" anywhere.

    Some references say the FULL mark should be a 1/4" above the mating surface. As is my stock TH400 from 1969. Is that ok too?

    I have an 86 G30. I see I have that same pan with the indentation around the bolt hole. Trying to determine which kind of transmission I have so I can source the parts. Currently it only moves in reverse and I’d like to try and fix it or replace it with a newer one. Is a swap possible or would I have to Chan my engine out as well?

    Sir, what dipstick would fit a turbo 400 behind a 351w? I don’t have a midplate. Unknown crossmember. Locking or non would be okay. I don’t know what will fit the foxbody and my searches didn’t give me a definitive answer. I don’t want to do flexible or lokar. Any ideas? Thank you

    • @davelowets
      @davelowets Před 2 lety

      Then you will be experimenting and fabricating something to make one fit. What's wrong with flexible tube? I use them all the time with zero issues. They allow me to shove the motor back closer to the firewall in my drag cars, without the factory tube in the way.

    Do you have any videos changing a long output shaft to a short output shaft on a Cadillac th400?

    • @mountainsgarage
      @mountainsgarage  Před 2 lety +1

      Not directly, but many times I have gone through the lower gear train. Part of that is removing the output shaft. Swapping it would be a direct exchange, but it’s one of the first pieces to assemble.

    • @HalloweenHunters
      @HalloweenHunters Před 2 lety

      @@mountainsgarage ok cool. I have a 64 Cadillac with the 429. And I’m taking out the jetaway and putting a th400 from a 65 Cadillac since that’s I think the only year th400 that will bolt up to the 429. But it’s a long output shaft. So if I swap it for a short shaft then it’ll be about the same length as the jetaway and I won’t have to cut the drive shaft. If it all works out right I hope

    • @davelowets
      @davelowets Před 2 lety

      @@HalloweenHunters "About" wont cut it. It'll have to be the SAME length or you'll end up cutting the driveshaft. Personally, I'd just take the driveshaft in and have it done VS. Tearing an entire trans apart to change the tailshaft.
