      After transferring from Inspector General to DOHwys, promotion, raise, was promised training, yet no interaction, plus a few other things, so as a tenured employee, I spoke up and DOH lied, lied and lied.....I had to take early retirement. So glad I never used sick leave. Trumpstards, homophobes, liars etc.....are hard to deal with. Upon them may God have mercy.

      Yep, I worked for one. He would never criticize you directly, he would always say you were doing fine if you asked him. But then he would go into executive and team meetings and make constant subtle, and sometimes not so subtle, digs at your performance. Then if you called him out on it after the meeting, he would say, "Oh come on! Everybody knew I was kidding! Lighten up!"

      My last boss because I didn’t answer a long email she sent me with a long list of all my “crimes” I was doing 🙄( which is bad on my part I admit that) instead of emailing me again, pulling me aside, or texting me (the last one she loved to do otherwise) she had one of my coworkers, (as in same position but only there a few months longer than me) send out a nasty,ignorant, disrespectful email. When I did get back to said manager about her original message and the new one I got from the coworker, I was told that “it wasn’t supposed to be offensive” and that she purposely had the coworker send me said message and she got a CC of it and thought it was fine, because before her promotion she often did the same thing 🙄🙄🙄🙄 needless to say I left very shortly after

      Buddy I feel you. I would constantly check in with my manager on status updates about the schedule for a future event. Nothing and kept dismissing me by telling me “ well let you know”. Now at the last minute they starting telling us the. Schedule and none of the schedules are matching up and I am expected to be take on more responsibilities and take away my schedule for their procrastination. Let me tell you I have sent my letter of resignation. I also BEEN telling them that I didn’t plan to stay for long or that I was leaving soon. They were garbage managers.

    When I was promoted to a manager, I made the mistake of being a boss and not a manager. One of my team anonymously left the book "The one minute manager" on my desk. I read it over a weekend and couldn't put the book down. Come Monday morning I called a meeting and implemented everything in the book. Simply 1. making sure that everyone knows what is expected of them. 2. Catching team members doing something right, then giving them a one minute praise. 3. When someone does something wrong, call th them in to the office right away (don't delay this) and PRIVATELY tell them what they did wrong, and why it upset you, but end it up with a one minute praise about something they did RIGHT. Something like "This upset me because you are so good at all the other things that you have done. I know that you can do this better." 4. Get the team what it needs to get the job done right, then get out of their way. Don't be a micromanager.

      Also you should find another word. Don't say "upset." You need to remain on the spectrum of lightly positive to neutral emotionally. You often might need a lot more than a minute to "manage." And don't forget the difference between management and leadership. Everything else is spot on. Good job!

    I'd definitely add the zero communication boss. They don't tell you any nuances or preferences of how they want things done then get pissed when its not done the way they wanted. Provide no training or explanation of new workflows yet get pissed when there are mistakes the first go at it. Provides zero feedback positive or negative then dumps it all on you on your year end performance evaluation when it could have easily been addressed months ago in a meeting, or even an email.

      It's always good in a meeting in front of all the other staff.....
      to force an rsole like that to make a decision....
      including if he ducks and weaves and makes no decision....
      Now everyone will go to him with every little problem and force him to make decisions.....
      Confirming "non decisions": with a follow up email setting out your query and the solutions you offered him but were not "decided upon" is great CYA.

    I've had a boss who constantly undermined my work and openly insulted me to my face. When I took my retirement and walked out, he discovered that he couldn't replace me and he had NO clue what my job entailed. The Karma Goddess bit him in his butt HARD!!!!

      Yes, I have a boss like that.... I could give an example of how he ticks every box from last week alone!!! Planning on leaving just need to get my ducks in a row 1st.... not healthy to be exposed to these toxic behaviours on a daily basis when your at work for majority of your time!!! You always find a high turnover of staff along with a few die hard employees too scared to leave because they invested years of their lives there!!!

    One I would like to add is the 'Overloader boss'; where no matter how hard you work or how much you get done, you will be told that you need to be 'quicker' or that you don't work hard enough when in reality the boss is trying to lighten his workload.
    I had a supervisor who was exactly like this, he was a complete nightmare to work with. He also had a high turnover rate and tried to justify it by mentioning how he 'trained' his workers up only for them to 'move on to do their own thing' (Gee, I wonder why).

      I have a boss like this, no matter what he has always got a box full of complaints for me even in cases where EVERYONE knows the ball was dropped by another department his team gets the blame. He LOVES to have other teams praise him and usually he does that by blaming his own team.
      I have devised a new strategy for my one-on-ones 
: when he asks me how is it going
 I just speak non stop complaining of everything
 until he gets a phone call and has to leave or the time is up. Deep inside we both know this is all a game, neither does he give a crap about the problems I face and neither do I give a crap that he gives a crap or not.

I’ve voiced legitimate complaints in one on ones but in group settings/team meetings, she quick to feign aloofness like she was never made aware of complaints she’s heard me tell her directly

      I like to use the "Do this one job and finish it as good as possible and then take the rest of the week off"-approach. (Most work we have takes several days)
      Its a tradeoff: My colleague will work additional hours beyond the legal limit to get the work done fast for me. To enjoy after that the time off.
      Its a tool I choose when I need good work done quick.

      How can u claim to be a chef and u don't even know how to clean a flat top or the fryer. Don't know how to drain the cold bar.     My previous boss was an unqualified, angry, micromanaging, passive aggressive, workaholic
 probably one of the most deadly multi-combinations I’ve ever had to deal with. I stayed as polite and as professional as I could during my time with the company. After gaining 9 months of experience and planning my escape, I was never so happy to leave a company in the dust.

      Same here. My supervisor is unqualified he’s passive aggressive and loves to micromanage me the lonely Warehouse Associate I’m literally the ONLY WAREHOUSE ASSOCIATE in my company there are no other warehouse associates just me.
      My supervisor has made me a list of tasks to do that has to be done that day, which is impossible. When I have to do inventory, and build shelving on top of cleaning the whole warehouse by myself it’s a medium sized warehouse but I live in the desert of Texas and it’s dusty and aren’t easy to manage, for ONE person. I try every way possible to clean it but fail at it no matter how much I go back over one spot that is really dusty than I get asked to do something else, on the fly. I rather stick with one task for a day that would take me all day which is cleaning, than the next day inventory where I’m just putting things into bins which will take me maybe 30 minutes to do, than give me other tasks to do for that day if I get done with inventory, don’t just stack tasks on tasks on me I will need an extra hand to get these done in one day.

      I had a "Boss" like that once. Everyone was getting worn out dealing with her tirades and overall horrible attitude. Just an overall nasty person who would brag about it on her phone in private (I overheard her once).
      She decided one day that I was going to be the target for her anger and harshly berated me in front of my team for no reason at all.
      I let her spew her verbal mess then I calmly replied, "Do you know that everyone here gives you the finger to your back?".
      She looked at the crew who confirmed that by just staring at her blankly. She became SUPER angry then stomped off to our office where she started crying and throwing things around (trashed the place!).
      This made it to corporate, who sent her to some type of "Human Relations" course, but she quit before finishing and we never saw her again.

    I had a boss that made fun of lower-level employees.
    I remember when I was 3 weeks into my internship (prior to being hired full-time), I described an issue I was having with an employee and she made fun of that employee by saying they're 40+, single with no kids, and with a plethora of issues. Completely unwarranted.
    She also would make fun of how others dressed, saying that an executive assistant needed a makeover. She made that comment in a meeting with other execs. They all laughed, and the assistant (with a broken leg) had only shown up to drop off a package.
    So glad I left that shithole.

    I work for an Aloof Boss. He came from a different department from mine. Five months down the line and he still doesn't know what we do and isn't prepared to at least try to find out. As a result of this we aren't being managed effectively. He thinks he knows everything and has tried to train a new member of staff, but this caused issues because the work wasn't being done properly. If any of us let him know that something isn't being done properly he shuts us down and refuses to listen. I used to love my job but now I can't wait to leave.

    Need to add the 'upwardly mobile boss'. This is the boss who is hell bent on climbing the corporate ladder and quickly as possible. They will take credit for everything that goes right in a department, but when something goes wrong, they will single out a subordinate and through them under the bus. They are a nightmare to work for.

    The Narcissist, the Micromanager, and the Unqualified all go hand in hand. I've worked for someone who was all three. A charming Narcissist will woo their way up the ladder, not know how to do their job, and redirect all negative attention to you by micromanaging you and dragging you and your rep through the dirt.

    I'll give you another: The Reverse Workaholic Boss
    Shows up after everybody else, leaves early, and complains that his subordinates are only working 60 hours a week. He'll also show up some weekends but only just long enough to walk through to make a tally of who is slaving away so he knows who to harass on Monday that he didn't see them working on the weekend.

I wasn't off of my 10 minute break yet and a boss told me I was late..like what? 10 seconds late?? Tf?? A customer was horribly rude to me, I complained about how awful the customer was (like literally customer yelled at me for checking his case since it was store policy to do so) then the boss turns around and says, "welcome to customer service."

      Retail is the worst. Retail employees are severely underpaid, under appreciated and under admired. It requires mental toughness. I did well at my last retail job and still was upset at all of the b.s. I witnessed directed at others. There was too much passive aggressiveness too.

    Most bosses don't really care much about thier employees anyways, unless it starts to affect the company's bottom line.

    Another reason why a friend boss can be a bad boss is that they would use the friendship they developed with the team members to suck every one into a clique. They might be friends with you and other team members, but most likely, they're also the enemy to other teams in the company, which would directly or indirectly make you an enemy to other teams. That could eventually hurt your future in this company.

      Yes. This and friend bosses know they can use that loyalty leverage to basically guilt you in doing “favors” like working more and taking on more responsibilities. It’s awful and I never want to be in that dynamic again. Sadly i didn’t realize that just cause my boss was a friend doesn’t mean they were a good boss. Friend bosses will throw you under the bus if they feel like using you.

    I had a boss in the past who got mad at me for calling on a bad weather day. I live 30 minutes out, and the roads were iced up. I called her saying I can't make it in (this was my very first call in.) And the next day, she scolded me saying to not call in again for a bad weather day like that and its not acceptable.

      I had a coworker who lived on the far outskirts of our metropolitan area, closer to the mountains. She tried to make it in on an icy day, but the Dept of Transportation had closed the roads in her area, so she called out. The boss called her at home and got angry with her. She was even told she should have anticipated this and rented a hotel room in town the night before. The kicker? The boss was calling from her house because she stayed home too!

      I live in the mountains where we get up to 2 feet snow, blizzards..white outs. I had 13 days saved. We got hit with 3 blizzards in 8 days. BIG ones! I have a 4x4, but couldnt get out of my driveway. The plows had made an embankment 4 feet high- 45 mph winds- snowing 2"/hr. I couldn't SEE 50 feet!! All airports closed, travel advisory...no cars on the road...I was reprimanded. I did it again. Written up. 3rd time- fired.

    The micromanager is literally killing me. My health is deteriorating. Bern hospitalized twice. Turn over is high. Prior to her joining, I was praised on my ability to get things done.
    They hired this person and my peace of mind shattered. No sleep. Flare ups of illnesses. Lack of motivation abounds where I was extremely self driven and a go getter.
    Independent thinkers and doers shrivel under micromanagement.

      Just leave, theres no point in staying in a environment like that. I started working in a place like that, the boss needed to know where I was at all times of the day, and everything I did was scrutinized with negativity. Asking for help was treated as a burden (the manager almost raised their voice when I asked them for clarification on a task) and I wasnt told exactly what was required of me on a given task, everything was explained in vague and general terms and I was just expected to do and it was never good enough.
      I resigned after a month, theres no point in wasting your time in these environments nothing you do will be good enough... go somewhere where your efforts are appreciated.

    Workaholic boss can be ok, but only if they make explicit callouts to make it very clear that they don't expect that same level of work from you - e.g. weekend emails etc. My current boss is a workaholic but has never ever expected his team to do the same.

    The “dont ever take breaks, your here to work” boss. This boss is a variation of micromanager who, the moment you do something foolish like go to the bathroom once in a while, he/she freaks out on you for it. You get reprimanded for using the bathroom once in a while. While excess bathroom breaks can become a problem, when you gotta go you gotta go. And being extremely uncomfortable on the job can greatly increase stress.
    This boss is also often a perfectionist, for example stressing out over aht(regardless of average call difficulty and luck, major factors in aht).

    Watched my boss that I have worked off and on with for nearly 14yrs up and quit the company. It raised a huge red flag. He was getting beat down constantly from upper management and decided enough was enough and walked with no job lined up. Well I wasn't going to wait to bear the brunt of the fall out as his replacement can fit into several of the categories mentioned in the video. Looking to move on as the current job isn't worth the stress and headaches that have just begun. When you see 6 employees bolt for the door in the last 5 months something is definitely not right.

    I took a new job exactly 2 months and 1 week ago. My boss is a nightmare. The expectations he sets are beyond unreasonable. I've been working late nights and even weekends since I started just to meet 3/4s of his 'onboarding' expectations. And yet, every meeting I have with this guy is about how I'm underperforming and failing to meet his expectations. Did I mention I've been here for 2 months? We're having our employee evaluations at the end of this month and he gave me a very professional warning that my evaluations would not look good. Who does that to a guy whose barely figured out where all the bathrooms are at yet? I mean... this is not my first rodeo. I've been in the professional office space, in this industry, for 13 years. I would get and understand... being this critical of a new employee if they were totally dropping the ball. If they missed half their meetings; displayed little to no growth; or were drunk half the time. But I'm busting my ass... working all day in the office; all night in my living room and all weekend at a Starbucks. And... compared to every other job I've had... I'm doing great! I've never learned this much, this fast in my life! And yet, despite it all.... despite the hard work I'm doing... I get nothing but negative feedback and disappointment from this guy. And, oh- yes... I've talked to him about it 4 times now. We talk right past each other. He makes sure every conversation ends with me understanding his reiterated expectations. That's it! There's no compromise; no realignment; no game- plan. It's just, "Here's what I want... Is that clear... do you have any questions?" Well, I'll tell you that... If he doesnt like my production numbers now... he's certainly not going to like them in the weeks to come. Because I'll be working on my resume and doing job interviews.

A new job, by the way, where they like me; appreciate me; and value my contributions. Exact same pay-- I should mention, only with a much larger bonus. But... everything I said about that guy and that position was entirely true. Reviewing my resume... my average time spent with a company is 4.5 years. Time spent with that company: 2.5 months. That should tell you something.

    You're going to love this one. I had a boss who insisted that he didn't want to micromanage. Threw it in your face every time you asked a question about procedure. Yet, when I did make a decision without his knowledge, he would come at me all angry and indignant - demanding to know why I didn't call and consult him about the situation. I finally figured out he only wanted to be in on the big stuff, so he could go back to his superiors, telling them that the particular project in question had turned out well due to his input. A real no-win situation.

    I had a boss that was an aloof, manic depressive boss, narcissistic and a micromanager all in one, with a flight of ideas and unrealistic expectations. She was a nightmare as you never knew what to expect. She was not able to perform any of our jobs, she would have random, emergency meetings to blow some situation way out of proportion. She even went as far as to hold the group hostage in these meetings. She tried to write me up for texting her with a 911 type text after I had been trying for a couple of hours to reach her, due to a death in the family so I could leave. They died before I could get there. If I would have left without notifying her, she would have fired me for patient abandonment. Worst boss I ever had in 40+ years and there were other doozies.

    I used to have a boss who would fall into the 'angry' category I guess, but his anger was expressed in passive agressive remarks and calm belittling in front of the entire office (which consisted of 6 people), rather than shouting. This man came across as charismatic at first, but then whenever I did something wrong he would make me feel incompetent. My already low self esteem had crumbled by the time I left / was let go (it was a mutual termination of my contract). That was 1.5 year ago and I'm much better off now.

    I worked with someone that I considered a friend once. She was my direct manager and things went horribly wrong for a lot of reasons too long to explain in a comment. But I would advise anyone to think twice before taking a job where your friend is your direct manager (or boss), you might end up losing a friendship or realizing you never even had one.

    At my last job the manager was a narcissist and a micromanager. She fails to realize how deplorable the training was yet blames you for not learning things properly. Then she says that she’s just trying to help me but I’m being “unreceptive”. Her micromanaging made me uncomfortable and I kept messing up even more (which led to me getting written up at one point). She even yelled at me because I hadn’t been trained on radiographs (I was a vet assistant) and everyone was watching. I decided I had enough and came in on my day off to hand in an immediate resignation letter. I loved my job and the doctors were amazing but the manager made the job unbearable.

    He replied, "I 100% agree". And he did protect me, because he valued me. He didn't know what I did for the company, but he recognized that it was vital.

    Another type of Bad Boss - the reluctant boss. This one was promoted by senior management without consulting them but they are not given support, mentoring, additional resources or extra pay. Companies try this procedure so that saving in recruiting more experienced and expensive managers. The reluctant boss would feel demotivated by having this level of responsibilities, working extra hours for no extra reward.
    Companies would often tell them that if they hit all their KPI's they would be "considered" in getting a pay rise.

    I once had a boss who was a combination of the micromanager, incompetent (without realizing it) and nepotism. Prior to meeting her, I believed the aphorism that there’s no such thing as a stupid question. After attending several meetings with this manager, I can assure you that there really are stupid questions. Lots of them.

    I got a job delivering pizza. The first day the owner was yelling at an employee. I said " this is too much aggression ", boss asked the employee what I said then the boss told his brother ( boss ) and he never said a word. Every employee was DEAD silent, I'm the real man and we need employees to be strong and say what they want to say. Don't be scared of ANY BOSSES EVER let them have it and they'll feel embarrassed like the boss in this story.

    I once met a nepotism boss that used their connections to get better working conditions for the team they managed. The boss knew they could get away with most anything due to their position, so the boss would go to bat for employees knowing that he could push boundaries that no one else could to his team's benefit.

    I'm retired now, but spent 47 years in the workforce in many different types of jobs. The REAL unfortunate thing about bad bosses is EVEN IF you get a truly good one--which is very rare indeed--there is often a really bad boss ABOVE him or her. In fact, there is often a bad boss on the TWO tiers above him or her. And if your boss's boss is horrible, it doesn't matter much that your immediate supervisor or manager is great. They are screwed, and you may be, too. But take heart! Value yourself, and never let the pricks get you down, no matter HOW "important" they are!

    I think bosses tend to be a mix of characteristics. If talking about bad bosses, my last one: narcissistic, workaholic, aloof, micromanager, and angry. She also clearly demonstrated that she was unqualified, but noone ever found out how she got the position, so maybe prior to that position she might have been the bee's knees, who knows?

    'Boss' is also a title that few superiors qualify to be called. My recent boss was excellent and I called her as such. One of the signs of the work environment she managed was joy amongst her staff. We worked hard for her because it was worth it. I know what difficult superiors are like, there is no joy in the atmosphere and colleagues verbally protect themselves when things go wrong; "It wasn't me, it was his job, or she was the one who did that."

    My last boss was an Unqualified Angry Micromanager.
    She would scream at her staff, slam doors, and micromanage EVERYTHING.
    I was one of the top performers and would call her out on her favouritism and anger. She loathed me because I was the only one to challenge her and other sat quiet.
    I didnt care because she taught me nothing.

    I’ve experienced every bad boss imaginable. I’ve been the boss too and had to learn when I was younger, what not to do, to be a better boss. I never had a mentor for most of my development. Good video, thanks.

    In extention to the friend boss there is also the fake friend boss. I had one of those who was acting like a friend on the surface, but was using the information I gave him as a friend against me and when I left the company he tried to use that "firendship" as a lever for talking me into staying despite fully knowing I was angry about being betrayed like that.

    Unfortunately, the narcissistic boss is more common than stats show. Fortunately, because there are publically available resources, more people are aware of this type of behaviour and are consciously learning how to deal with it in a way that keeps their sanity intact. Great job.

    #11: The lying boss / the boss that doesn't operate in reality: I've literally had a boss who for instance would say "You never sent me this deliverable" or "You didn't send it by the deadline." I would then re-forward the boss the email where I sent the deliverable (with time/datestamp), including email replies where they even replied to say "thanks" and confirmed receipt, only to at a later point have them claim the deliverable was never sent. Upon re-forwarding the email showing proof the deliverable was sent with the time/datestamp, they still denied it was sent...at all. To be clear, this was not a case of it wasn't done right, or wasn't done to their satisfaction, no this was the person literally claiming it simple wasn't done at all.
    Bosses in general that go around making blatantly FALSE claims, unsupported claims, etc. are toxic. It's practically impossible to work in an environment where your boss claims you didn't do the things you actually did.

    i used to work for a place with a supervisor and a manager always breathing down my neck and would nitpick at my work. things like, "you forgot to put a period there" or i"f you have downtime, you need to email everyone on the team and see if you can assist. "

      That POS I work for is biased, shitty, and corrupt as an absent boss.
      He disappears in the office when I go to lunch, instead of watching and judging what the other laborers are doing. He only judges me-- And I do the work. He's Hellbent on getting rid of me.

    One other type of boss I've seen, although I've seen this only in the military, is the bully boss. They will choose certain people and no matter how hard those people try, they'll be treated like crap (yelling, gaslighting, destroying/vandalizing their stuff, very mean spirited "pranks", etc). On top of that, those who want to get in good with the bully will pick on those people too, so it creates a highly toxic environment for those people the bully chose. Being as its military, the people being targeted can't just quit, and changing work centers due to harassment/bullying of that sort is not always easy since its your word vs their word...and nobody will speak on the victims' behalf because they don't want to risk being the next target.

    I once worked for an angry boss in Washington DC. He said he was running out dept like the Marine Corp and he would scream and curse at his staff. The first time it happened to me, I walked out of the meeting and when I tried to speak to a colleague, I had a spasm of hyperventilating. I’d never seen that but it was shocking and unbelievable. I quit the next day. He was literally shouting down the hallway “If you walk out, I’ll see to it that you never work in this town again!!!” In my life, he set the bar for worst job ever!

    I would add and one more : The Martyr. This boss refuses to delegate and then complains about their workload and the unwillingness of their employees to help. They insist on doing things the hardest way possible, because working smarter or easier means you're somehow wrong. They also tend to have tons of personal problems that somehow become the problems of everyone they work with.

    Shocking how many of these I have had.... In fact, I can think of only two good bosses I have had in the last 20 years! Generally I find that a good boss is one you keep in touch with after you or they move on, either professionally or personally & professionally.

    She screwed my happiness from the day one I stayed only cz of money due to bank loans but now I'm free from toxic place even team act accordingly to boss to save their ass.

    Fourteen years of my fifteen-year career were spent working for bad bosses at nine different companies. Some of my most hated memories relate to employment. Boss types 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8 apply, in various combinations. I quit my last job in 2019 and have been self-employed ever since. It's nice to feel human again.

    Another trait of a bad boss is a boss who doesn’t want to communicate.. Communication is an important aspect to every job and it is very crucial to have a very clear top down communication in order to allow the team to drive the organisation towards its goal..

    A micromanager will pick out mistakes since they may have a specific approach and method to the work that they prefer. Best to just learn from them and appreciate their input in a positive manner and once things are done their way they will become more hands off.

    My least favorite manager, the one that asks their workers to do something over and over that they either have never, could never or most importantly WOULD NEVER do for you or their workers. I have a manager that constantly mandates people to work days off and overtime but always leaves right at 8 hours and never comes in to help out.

    OMG, after having worked for 10 years in one and the same company I dealt almost only with these types of bosses and drew a conclusion that only narcissistic personality or nepotism will make someone a boss...You opened my eyes to the fact that there are normal and qualified bosses in this world too.       They are few and far between like a good bosses video would be really short. I have had the privilege of working with a few. They operate from a place of reality, optimism, and care. They are self-aware, honest, and team oriented.

    I have an unexperienced timid friend boss. He let the organization put down wages, many of my colleagues left, i suppose it is my turn now. Now the "team" consists of two workers and three managers. The managers are barking at each other. It's a nightmare.

    I'm a terrible boss lol. I work as a shift lead in an aerospace shop for a rather small shift, mainly because I can help people when they have questions. It's a profession where slowing down, taking your time, and doing things right is well worth it. I enjoy teaching people how to machine and I'm lucky that I've only had one person just not get it. My biggest weakness is I'm too good at listening. Don't get me wrong, I'll defend my guys when things are made, but I really suck at translating what went wrong into a language people who aren't machinists can understand. I do get pushed around by other management, as in they literally go over my head and write up my guys without me even knowing about it. Now yes, I'm just a lead and not a floor supervisor, but it feels like no email I ever send in my company gets read. I got along great with the old supervisors who would defend the employees but I don't know what to do half the time when those above me refuse to blame me for the shortcomings of my shift and instead write up the valuable people on my shift when something happens that wasn't really their fault, which has twice now caused a walkout.
    We have a hard time keeping people, we're understaffed, our pay is 25% below market value, and our investor placed CEO and dayshift plant manager both walk around expecting 6 people to run 5 machines each. I work in an extremely skill biased profession and it feels like I'm one of the only few people in management who understands that machinists, at least good ones, have no qualms leaving for better work if not given a reason to stay, and good machinists are hard to come by, but pay for themselves in spades. The workplace seems intent on hiring fresh blood and expecting someone to instantly learn it. FFS I'm only working there still because I *like* the aspect of being a lead where you solve other people's problems and I don't belittle people or make them feel like they're in trouble. I explain what I'm doing, I say why I'm doing it, and I answer questions. I don't breathe down people's neck, but I check and make sure people aren't dead occasionally because it's a large shop and there are only a few of us on nightshift. If something breaks, I will fix it, even if that means doing really dirty work. I don't care if people respect me or not, but I'd rather people ask me things than make a mistake and have it passed up the chain. Autism aside, I think I like being a lead, but I know that with my aptitude, I'd likely never be a lead again because I don't exude those qualities beyond my knowledge in my field and my ability to pass that knowledge on to others.

    Wow this describes nearly half of my work place, and I have a narc boss to top it off. Increably pompous jerk. Definitely relate to the micro managers finding time to catch all your mistakes, like a set up. Yet they never find the time or interest in helping you when you need them. To busy chatting with peers, and playing on their phone.

    I just left a job yesterday due to personal family reasons however......my boss could not organize and needed to control everything. He wasn’t very supportive of his team. Never ending changing priorities and firefighting, no communication between subordinates and the larger overall business. You had to beg and plead to take your vacation time. The money was good but I’m kinda glad to be moving on...

    The company that i used to work for, we had an aggressive boss, and a timid menager at the same time. The result of this heavenly combination was that the boss would call our nemager into his office every time something went wrong and yell at him for hours so loudly that he could be heard outside on the street. The boss would abuse our menager so badly that i half expected him to show up with a gun one day and shoot the place up.

    A former boss of mine was the narcissist, the unavoidable, and the micromanager all at once. She wanted us to post about the company and its products multiple times a day. We had to change all of our social media to fit the company’s name into both our bio and our account names. When she got everyone Christmas gifts they were fairly expensive and she encouraged us to post about them. To me it felt like she wasn’t giving us these fancy gifts because she cared about us. Instead it felt like she wanted to let everyone online know just how successful SHE the owner was that she could afford all of these gifts. When I was in training she would breath down my neck and look at every tiny thing I did and judge it. But she would often leave the building without telling anyone or say she’ll just be gone for an hour or two and then never come back. When I had questions or needed help, no one was there to help me.

    My former boss wore a triple crown: unqualified, micromanager and gaslighter. She was dropped into the role with no prior experience. She thought it was a good idea to review every aspect of my work despite her lack of knowledge in the field. Above all, she tried to manipulate me into thinking that I should be grateful I had a job and that I should show up for work with a smile every day. I couldn't care less for the job. It was a temp contract.

    I’m a team manager in my company and actually came to these videos (starting with toxic work environment) to get perspective and see if I myself fit any of these types for my employees. I do actually have to consciously resist being aloof, a work-a-holic, or timid so it’s good to have a reminder and signs to look out for. Still need to check out the rest of your videos, but thank you for posting these. :)

    Awesome videos. I’ve got an angry micromanaging boss. Two on my team got in a fight over my training and my boss got in trouble as the fight went up the chain. 5 weeks in to a new job and my boss hates me over the actions of my team members.
