  • Upgrades to the miter guide: • Well This Is Embarrass...
    Talking a bit about the new shop I would like to build and what I'll put in it. Since it will be smaller than the shop I have now, everything won't fit. And that will probably be a good thing - forcing me to only have the tools I'll use the most and less space wasting junk.
    The new shop would be a low cost, lightweight building not much bigger than a garden shed. My current shop (garage) is roughly 13' x 23' and the new shop would be around 10' x 20'. But I wouldn't store any wood in there at all, so that would save a lot of space.

      Hi John. Re your new shop. A friend has a decent sized shop and he built a little block closet outside the shop about 10' away. He's planning on insulating the crap out of it and putting a wood stove in there. Then he's using an inline blower to blow the heat in the little building over to his shop. He was worried about any potential fire taking out his tools. Also you might want to go 10'x25' and drop your dust collection on the other side of a sound proof partition wall. Take care.

    Seeing that you've got plans to do a small production run of speakers, I think a separate build space would make things more convenient. When there's no snow you can use the garage to setup more stuff for that as well.
    What I did in my garage is put everything on lockable coaster wheels (you can place a few 4x4 beams under it if you need extra support/stability Matthias Wandel style). I put everything against the walls and park my car in it when I don't do projects. It's easy to pull out everything when the car is outside and put back in place. Even with the car in the garage I can access most of the stuff, though I need to walk around the car, which isn't ideal but if I need to do something real quick, I can.

    My new shop (latest of 8 in my life) is a 12x20 shed and it’s plenty of space when used wisely. I’m still putting finishing touches on it, but happy to share what I’ve learned.

    Another shack to put all this crap in. 😅I love the scrapbin channel. If space would become an issue I would get rid of the spindle sander , put the drums on the drill press and let the table go up and down automatically, that would generate some reactions 😅. But kidding aside I guess the drill press could do the sander’s job just fine, just not so efficiently. I imagine that the car being in the garage in the winter ( specially in Ontario) is not really a luxury but more a must have. My wife now nearly living 30 years in Belgium ( and is from Whitby / Oshawa) still cringe when she sees the snow in Ontario on ctv. 🤣 and I looking at it like a winter wonder land.

    • @IBuildItScrapBin

    Remember that you will put things on the walls and that will narrow your space considerably. If you need 10 x 20 interior then I would go 15 x 20. If you are bringing the jointer you will probably end up bringing the planer as well.

    • @IBuildItScrapBin
      @IBuildItScrapBin  Před 7 měsíci

      My shop now is just 13' x 23' inside, wall to wall, and that's with the lumber rack on one side and the miter saw station on the opposite side. I think I'll get by no problem with it being 10' wide, but may bump it a bit longer in length to make up the area.

  • @UberAlphaSirus
    @UberAlphaSirus Před 7 měsíci +1

    That would give you a building and finishing shop. When I used to make bespoke furniture, used to drive me nuts not having the room to build everything and having to walk around the project and not enough room to run a board on the table saw if I needed to mid build. And sheeting everything up to spray something drove me nuts too.

    • @IBuildItScrapBin
      @IBuildItScrapBin  Před 7 měsíci

      Exactly. For 6 months out of the year I can still park outside and free up the garage space for other things. Hopefully not for filling with junk and making it impossible to park in it!

    My shop is 15' 3" by 11' 3' inside. In it I have a full size tablesaw, 6'long bed jointer, 13' industrial planer, chopsaw station, and room for a 16' lathe. You have to be organized, and put things away as soon as you are done, but it works.

    One of the few things I disagreed with you was the size of the disk sander when you built that one. I made a 12" disk sander years ago and loved the size but the problem is the motor finally died so now I'm using the 5" disk sander and grumble every time. You make plans for another sander I'll buy them and build it.
    A new shop sounds cool. I hope you do it.

      @@ianhelsbyservices I bought a used electric lawnmower for $30 and used the motor from that. I don't have the specs but it's probably around 1/4 to a 1/3hp.

  • @Wordsnwood

    How wide is the current shop? I have to say that 10ft seems narrow. Mine is 11ft wide and I feel forced to have the TS against a wall due to narrowness. I don't need a huge shop, but I do wish for a width of more like 14ft or so so I could have the TS central.
    Maybe try going underground, like Colin Furze... I bet that would pull some views! 😆

    • @IBuildItScrapBin
      @IBuildItScrapBin  Před 7 měsíci

      At this point, I doubt anything I'd do would get the kind of views he's getting. I could raise fu_kers from the dead or levitate objects like Yoda and still not break a million views.
      My shop is just 13' wide with the lumber rack on one side and the miter saw station on the other, so it's kind of like being 10' wide already. And my saw is over to one side, up against the lumber rack.

    Nice job! Did you consider making the red indicator arrow spring loaded and allowing it to index into holes or grooves on the *edge* of the protractor rather than having a pin through the face? Probably more complicated to build and no more accurate...

    • @IBuildItScrapBin
      @IBuildItScrapBin  Před 7 měsíci

      I did, but thought it would be too tricky to do accurately without resorting to using the CNC.

  • @act.13.41
    @act.13.41 Před 7 měsíci

    Quick question about lubricating the CNC. What if you used a graphite lube instead of oil to prevent dust collecting in the joints. Much as we would in a lock.

    • @IBuildItScrapBin
      @IBuildItScrapBin  Před 7 měsíci +1

      The ball screws and linear bearings already have grease inside, so the oil is more compatible with that.
      I'll eventually read the manual and find out what I should do, but I tried the oil on a hunch because the problem just kept getting worse and I thought it would be the quickest way to find out if it was binding.

    A garage and a wet car in a shop environment is not a good combo, even if you have a heater in the garage. Too much moisture and it will ruin everything. Get yourself a overhang for the front of the garage and be done with it. My 2 cents.
