I think someone should make a movie based in the 20th and 21st centuries and purposely get everything as historically inaccurate as possible. Imagine: teenage girl comes in wearing bellbottoms and playing flappybird, argues with mother about feminist movement while it is unclear which wave of feminism is being portrayed (are they after the vote, labor equality or what?) Mother is churning butter by hand, and worried about her husband fighting in war. It is unclear whether he is in Vietnam or World War One because technologies, strategies and places from both are mentioned. The movie would be a hot mess and it would be glorious!

I'm glad you spoke about Claire Hummel's work and people not crediting her. The point of her "historically accurate Disney princesses" series was to take the princesses and ground them in a specific time/place/era, while still keeping the colours and major design elements of the characters, so obviously some liberties are taken with accuracy but the result is still a gorgeous image and an improvement (in terms of accuracy and detail) on the original designs. I feel like a lot of these videos haven't even looked at the descriptions she posted with her original art explaining her design choices.

Cries in Danish when looking at Ariel who I grew up knowing as a blonde mermaid named Sirene🤧
Interesting that her name was Sirene! Interesting because in Polish, we have a very similar myth to the Little Mermaid called Rusalka, but a mermaid translates to Syrena/Syrenka (very close to Sirene). Call me weird but I find it charming when I seen European fairy tales converge on some details and trying to speculate why 🤪
Whatever video shes sourcing these clips from really did claire hummel dirty
True. Oof.
Seriously!
I decided to double check after that excerpt because, while Claire Hummel did state her costumes were supposed to be 'closer' to reality, not perfectly accurate, her placing Little Mermaid in 1840's Georgia was a "huh???" moment. It is simply not what she says in the description of the picture. She says the inspiration for the movie looks is scattered: there's a minor character with a Georgian set up, the slashed sleeves are present in many eras /including/ the 1840's. She simply made a choice to go with 1890's because of the leg-o-mutton sleeves. She doesn't even give a guess of when the movie is set. It irks me because they sourced her art but didn't even bother to read one tiny paragraph properly before they put words in her mouth, making her sound like a fool. What a shoddy work.
The same video that thought that The Little Mermaid was taking place I Georgia also discusses Frozen and tried to seem knowledgeable and mention some “special” clothing item names in Norwegian. They mention words like “strumpor” and “skjorta” and make them seem like they’re particular clothing items but turns out they’re literally just saying socks and shirt. Very researched lmao
Jonna Yeah, I know the artist who did the Little Mermaid painting, and the Buzzfeed video completely misquoted her. She's well aware that the story takes place in Denmark, and didn't even go with 1840 as the time period. Some of these historically accurate videos are obviously not well researched but have then high production values (hiring models, lights, the shots) that it feels so frustrating. Talking about historical accuracy, have you watched Gentleman Jack? It features some solid 1830's fashion and it shows they were trying to be as true to the fashion as possible. (It's also a very good show). The intro theme shows the main character getting dressed and you can see her putting on a corset (over a shift!) and adding the busk to the front. Really recommend it!
I love the costumes and the costumimg featurettes on Outlander. they work so hard at being historically accurate and it's lovely!
Did you know that Gentleman Jack was a real person and that the story is based on her diaries, which she wrote in code? She wrote very explicitly about her sexual encounters and relationships with other women and was quite open about her homosexuality. She even got married to a woman (in church!) and they lived together as sort of husband and wife. Not sure if she was really a transgender male, but she was nicknamed "Gentleman Jack" because she wore male clothes and acted quite like a man. Very fascinating person either way and I'm glad their story is getting told! ^^
That show is so accurate the corset/stays actually give the actress gas just like if she was living back then (seriously she jokes about it in interviews)

Actually, I don't think it is that interesting to talk about whether Disney princesses are historically accurate (everybody knows Disney people didn't know anything about anything, and especially about anything outside of US), but I would love some fashion historian's insight in how the princesses match the era the movie was made. For instance, Snow-white has that distinct 30-s noir thing going on, and Cinderella is a Grace Kelly. Could you please please please make a video about that?
yes, that's actually interesting too! how fashions from the time affected the way the princesses look
I was thinking abut that too, especially the "older" princesses - Snow White, Cinderella and Aurora.
Oh that's an excellent point! I wonder if you look at say more modern princesses do they look like the decade they were made? If you think about it Ariel does kind of have that 90's high hair *1989 Cindy Crawford supermodel hair
@@LDrosophila Of more modern princesses mirroring modern fashion, I think Elsa is the best example - her dresses scream Ellie Saab and her braid! That sort of braid was (still sort of is) a dime a dozen in the years leading up to frozen
There are several articles on that subject on Frockflicks, I think.
I can't wait for the Disney Princess who has a 1980s perm, a 1950s tea dress, Gogo boots, a sports jacket and a cloche hat
Absolute style icon right there and 100% accurate to the 20th century
It's especially hard to figure out what 'commoners' were wearing at the time, because usually only the rich or royal could afford to have paintings made. And even then it was such an occasion that they'd dress up up even fancier so they'd look as impressive as possible for future generations to see. And so these are the most commonly accessible reference pics. Highly staged and only showing the 1%.

Misquoted. She was commenting on how it was hard to find when due to the “Georgian era getup” (somewhere in the 18th and 19th centuries) and other stuff from different time periods
Disney obviously take a lot of liberties and are influenced by the times that the films were actually made. Do they even attempt to get their films historically accurate? But the CZcams videos are another matter. "Let's explain inaccuracies with more inaccuracies..." 🤦♀️
One thing I think is cool about the history of animation is to see how the characters, regardless of setting, will always show some influence of the fashions of the time and place of their creation. Like how 80s anime characters have big 80s hair. Or how Cinderella clearly looks like she's going to a prom int he 1950s more than to a royal ball in the (unspecified time period) middle ages.
@@TheRachaelLefler Cinderella is more renaissance era tho.
@@TheRachaelLefler I also think that about the old Hollywood movies that played in past eras. For example Cleopatra with Liz Taylor. You clearly see the influence of the 60s in her hair and makeup
Disney cares more about designing a character that the audience will find pleasing. Which is a better route to go then trying to be historically accurate. Elsa's coronation dress isn't very accurate to what a real queen getting coronated would wear. The dress is far too simple. but its design is clearly symbolic in nature. It looks constricting and stiff because that's how Elsa feels. And that symbolism is more powerful than making something super historically accurate.
@@TheRachaelLefler honestly, l think cinderella always had a more 1870s/1880s vibe to it. Idk, thats where l always placed it.
I'm pretty sure the photo drawn by Azalea's Dolls is actually something made on dollsdivine (a website that hosts dress up games). Azalea's Dolls is the artist and creator of the game used, but the picture shown is a creation by someone using the game. And yes, some people have made some insanely talented things with dollsdivine games (especially if there's a drag and drop section, you'd be amazed at the level of creativity and straight up artistry these people use) but that's still someone working within the parameters of a dress up game. It's a beautiful and well designed game, but it's not someone who set out to create a perfectly historically accurate version of the princess from scratch. It's like saying Moana is from Alabama x)
Her art is really nice tho :3
Right? lol
My poor national pride took a hard hit right there
i think they meant the eastern european country georgia, not the state. (although either way, they were wrong.)
Unruly Crow I know the artist, and the voiceover in that Buzzfeed video totally misquoted her. The only mention of Georgia in her original post is to say that the TIME period is hard to pin down in the movie because: "Grimsby's wearing a Georgian getup, Ariel's pink dress with the slashed sleeves subscribes to several eras from the Renaissance to the 1840s, and Eric is... Eric."
It was a reference to the Georgian PERIOD as evidenced by Grimsby's costume, and neither of the two locations called Georgia. Don't worry, she's well aware that it takes place in Denmark. That's just Buzzfeed for ya! XD
@@Artoveli that makes so much more sense,, thank you for mentioning that-
The Little Mermaid: is a Danish story
Producer: G E O R G I A I N T H E 1 8 4 0'S
And yeah YT suggested me the first video (the one with the really cool music) like 10 days ago and without being an expert at all, I was like "HMMMMMM 😟"

@@Artoveli Thanks for giving more context, because I was really skeptical haha poor artist getting horribly misquoted. Buzzfeed gotta Buzzfeed I guess.
And? Disney's Nutcracker was moves to London for example.
Title says "Historically Accurate." Video features literal halloween costumes.
SOMEONE ACTUALLY USED AN AZAELEASDOLLS IMAGE, I CAN'T
Especially since the "photo drawn by Azalea's Dolls" is probably what someone else made with the doll maker.
scarylion.roar Yeah, that's definitely an online doll maker. My little sister was obsessed with that particular one for a while. It's not even a Disney themed one, it's supposed to be modelled after the Tudor period.
I'm sure the people at Buzzfeed would make amazing videos if they weren't "incentivised" (forced) to pump out videos as fast as possible. In other words, next to no time for proper research
Yeah some of their videos are funny (that's rare but there is still potential)
It's kind of crazy how throughout not even half our lives we go through so many different fashion crazes yet we constantly diminish fashion periods down to entire centuries
Buzzfeed: exists
Karolina: exists
Me: Destroy them
✨Meme mom says: whatcha know about sleep it’s historically accurate Princess time✨
I've never been this early ohmygosh,,,, I LOVE UR OUTFIT MEME MOM!
BuzzFeed: this is *ACTUALLY* what Disney Princesses should look like
Karolina: *that is not correct*
The " dumbing it down for a wide audience" drives me inssaaaane. You can be accurate without talking for hours. It also reminds me of travesties like" Memoirs of a Geisha" that first off was totally fine with mashing every Asian nationality together as if they were the same, but also thought traditional Maiko and Geisha makeup was " too out there" for general audiences...despite it being one of the most iconic and easily recognized cultural looks since forever.
I don’t think the traditional geiko and maiko makeup and hair were too out there for the filmmakers, I think the just didn’t find the traditional look appealing enough. I vaguely recall them saying something about how the traditional hairstyles didn’t look good to them from certain angles and stuff like that. But I agree, the inaccuracies in that movie drove me insane too.
I remember seeing Claire Hummel's art a few years ago. It's so good! It's actually well researched and pretty accurate, but apparently those videos couldn't even accurately describe them. 1840's? ... wow.
Claire Hummel herself wrote descriptions of why she made each design choice for her historical princesses
The day Meme 👏 Mom 👏 makes a video and she HAS eaten breakfast already, I will be shocked, I tell you. SHOCKED.
As a fellow history and clothing nerd
OMG I related so much when you were talking about how centuries are like, a lot of years, and a lot of stuff changes, and you can’t mash it all together. I’m currently working on a fashion timeline for the 17th and 18th century, and it’s crazy because styles change way faster than people think. Would you unironically wear 1990s clothing today? No, just like how a lady at the end of the 19th century wouldn’t dream of wearing a crinoline and as a mid-19th century lady would be very embarrassed by the thought of that sheer, 1820s nightgown look that their parents used to don.
i'd love to see your thoughts on the european princesses! particularly elsa/anna, rapunzel, cinderella, and aurora. i feel like it'd be really cool to have a fashion historian collaborate with a film historian to discuss this stuff as well.
This is the problem with the infotainment sphere on CZcams.. it's cool that a culture has developed around short informational videos, but when they become a business requiring a certain output every week then they are focused on getting something out there rather than doing it right.
Now I want you to put together an outfit of a Disney princess in the 70s that it's based off the entire 20th century 😄
Azaleasdolls does design her historical dress up games with accurate pieces of clothing and patterns. It just all depends on how you design them.
that 1900 spice girl look sent image in my brain that i cant remove right now >.<
i imagined them performing "wannabe" with that outfit .
Uhh, I needed this so much. Thank you. ♥
Also, your hairstyle is just on top, feeling fancy, might recreate it later, idk.
Don't forget your crown lol
@@jennyboldrini7330 Yeah, that's (super) fancy.
Them earrings tho👏✨
You pulled them off girl.....I couldn't.
Ah yes the prince of Georgia. My favorite monarch.
Snow White should definitely sport one defining look from the beginning & end of the 16th century: Giant alien forehead, to show off more of that snow white skin. Beautiful
Buzzfeed: Historically accurate Disney princesses
Karolina: Hold my tea
_spills tea_
Say it louder for the people in the back Karolina! 👏As a history major in medieval Europe, you wouldn’t expect me be knowledgable for things outside of my era & location, so why do shows/media outlets only hire one historian!?
The music playing during the scenes that point out the inaccuracies gives me life. I always love your editing hehe
To be honest I never know if you're saying "meme mum" or "mean mum".
Both
i’ve been waiting for this also u look like an epic picture of my grandparents/parents from when they were younger 😉🖤👏🏻
“That being said, I haven’t eaten my breakfast” is iconic
Absolutely love your take on this! It’s so true the historical inaccuracies are beyond inaccurate.
“So, uh.... see ya. “ I love when she ends her vids like this
