Should You Go Watch "Jesus Revolution"?

  • "Jesus Revolution" is a new Christian film about the so-called Jesus Movement in California during the late 1960s and 1970s. The film stars Joel Courtney as Greg Laurie, Jonathan Roumie as Christian hippie Lonnie Frisbee, and Kelsey Grammer as Pastor Chuck Smith. Should Christians go see the movie while it's still in theaters, or wait to see it later, or not watch it at all? Since I just watched it with my wife, I'll share my thoughts in this review.

      Spot on.
They always miss the “unrepentant” aspect.
As Christians, we are to evangelize and not segregate, we can even invite non-believers to church. But they can not be members (but attenders).
You can’t bring a flood of (unrepentant) sinners into the church and not imbibe their culture.
Church is supposed to be for the repentant/repenting.

Jesus Revolution was one of the best movies I've ever seen (especially as a Christian movie). I believe this movie is so relevant as I truly believe we are seeing the second Jesus Movement starting in the universities! I went to the Asbury Revival the very first week it happened (my aunt attended the school 4 years after the 1970 revival). I saw so many parallels between the movie and the revivals breaking out in universities. I really feel like Gen Z is the modern day equivalent of the hippies. As a college student myself, I am seeing classmates who are hungry for more than alcohol and drugs and promiscuity. I have been able to testify to two unsaved classmates since attending the revival and one of them is planning to see this movie. I cried during the movie, I felt so much conviction. I believe God is calling us to reach the unreachable. Many are giving hope on Gen Z ever finding Jesus, but I am seeing a generation who is hungry for more than the things of the world. I believe this movie is a wake up call to the church to get out of our seats and to start sharing Jesus wherever we go and to whoever we encounter. I recommend this movie to anyone, saved or unsaved. I have been hearing of prayer spontaneously breaking out after the movie and also groups of people getting saved after wondering what they have to do to find Jesus. God is moving, it's time to rise up and speak Jesus!

"established older conventional" Christians are the way they are because they have 1 basic principle.. they follow the Holy book and listen to the words of scripture, everything they do or decision they make, they first reference the bible. Taking the "Life" out of it, is a seriously poor way to look at it, for life will ultimately be given to THEM. Any new age hippy way of worshiping Jesus is fine, if they truly understand who Jesus actually was. Which most of them don't. But I guarantee the established older conventional Christians who try to take the "Life" out of it, know exactly who Jesus was and what he stood for.

I am not religious and saw this movie and it was great. One of the best I've seen in a long time. I liked how he said the the door is always open and the door swings both ways. It made me think of The Doors and the 60s, that color revolution was all done to destroy religion, but I didn't really know about the other direction of the door, that all those things were leading people to God. Incredible movie. I would pay to see it again just because of the people and characters

He never lived a full gay 'lifestyle'. He fell into immoral sexual behavior for a season and bore the consequences by contracting hiv.
He did not celebrate, allow for or uphold that sin as okay.
He was molested as a child and that can mess a person up pretty bad.

Terrific review, so well deconstructed highlighting the important stuff! Thank you... your input always means so much to me and when, because, you can't help yourself but add your comedic 2 cents... and I'm drawn in. Your/Our friend John, with his "Terrible taste in movies, music, and friends", was, in fact, on target with this one 😂🤣. I appreciate, respect, and love you brother David. I have the same for your wife and boys too. Your story and work has deeply affected my and my son's life. He, David, self diagnosed his Asperger's at age 27-28. For a while he was 'testing' you out in reference to your testimony. He, in his understanding and humanness, absolutely very much doubted your Christianity (he was a Christian)... and then he followed you, learned, grew, and the Lord added more wisdom to his knowledge. You amazed him. This was in earlier days when Nabeel was still here and my David was really taken by you two and devastated when we lost Nabeel. If you'd be so kind as remembering this part... I will follow it up in the future because, as a mother... YOU, I know would understand a tragic story which I hold in cuz... not many safe places to vent. BTW, your wonderfully deep and humorous personality brings medicine to me every time I watch you. Thank you so much!🙏😂🤣🙏🌹

Saw it with some friends last weekend, and I have to say it was pretty good! We were some of the youngest people in the theater though! The acting was good, the story was engaging, it wasn't candy coated rainbow schlock. There were a few problems but overall a really good film. Alicia Childers did a really good breakdown of the whole film and a few of the historical inaccuracies. The people complaining about the few scenes with drug use should go home and rewatch Fireproof. Real life and real stories are messy.
If you haven't heard yet, there is another Christian film coming out April 14th called Nefarious, based on the book A Nefarious Plot by Steve Deace. It is definitely not your Grandma's Christian film! Imagine Seven, Stigmata, The Omen written from a Biblical worldview.

A friend of mine invited me and a few other friends to see Jesus Revolution, and I was really impressed. I was more than ticked off by the theater's self-promotional, which lasted over a half hour of things quite opposite Christianity. But as I graduated college in 1974 this Jesus Revolution was on everyone's mind. In chapel we even had Barry MacGuire (of Eve of Destruction fame) introduced to us by New Zealand evangelist Winkey Pratney. It was raining so hard you could hear it beaching the roof of the chapel. The song Barry sang? It's a happy day, and I thank God for the weather. Back to the movie. I knew some kids like the ones Lonnie ministered to. One of our campus outreach groups had car problems on the way back from their last outing when the car suddenly stopped. They weren't far from a gas station, so they pushed it there and were told the problem was a busted fuel line. As they were feeling all dejected, here comes this kid, long hair, bell-bottom blue jeans, some kind of shirt, and a thick Bible. "What's going on?" he asked, so the told him the bad news. "Have you tried praying over it?" he asked, and then without waiting for an answer, put his hands on the car and prayed that Jesus would fix everything wrong with the car since it was a tool for His servants. He then asked one of the people to turn the engine on. The engine turned over and they road back to the college, Jesus having fixed the car.
The one thing I'm glad they put in there was the bit about Kathryn Kuhlman praising his evangelistic work and miracles of healing. This was followed up by Lonnie deciding when he could interrupt the service "because the Holy Spirit want to move." It showed that even the best can get their eyes off of Jesus. It was, overall, a remarkable movie, and I hope people will keep this in mind with the Asbury Revival.

I have enjoyed listening to those who were there and lived those early days of Calvary Chapel, talking about their experiences with Chuck Smith and Lonnie Frisbee. So many of them are still involved in the ministry and pastoring at their own Calvary Chapels around the country. I think that speaks more to the lives that were changed and the souls saved. There are many videos you can find online. I took away the fact that, in many ways, it's a movie about Greg Laurie and his wife Cathie. I would watch it again.

Love Kelsey Grammer. Both comedy and grammar do not work without tension. Given decent tension then almost any movie or sitcom can be good. I think Kelsey has great delivery and presence in television and film. He carried Cheers on his back after Shelly Long let for quite some time - he's able to create comedic AND dramatic tension. One of my favorites is the one with John Cleese, another was the one where Frasier's wife kept a rat in her purse, and still another was when Emma Thompson played his former girl friend, Nanny G. I even liked him iin and because of him in it, "Down Periscope". Wow - all of this stuff suddenly coming back to mind. I hope he did a good job with "Jesus Revolution" and I hope he has a new surge to his career. He is absolutely fantastic. To me he's kind of like those guys in the golden age of movies, like Cary Grant or Walter Matthau - they had their own distinct delivery that no one could match and made watching every movie they were in interesting.

I read Chuck Smith's interview on how he felt when he first saw Lonnie Frisbee. He said there was an instant connection. These things are sort of miracles - a hippie-looking man of God connecting (in the first glance) with another man of God despite their outward differences. This does happen. But, these things were not shown in the movie as maybe the director/s thought that that would not make sense to the audience.
Instead, the movie shows Smith arguing with Frisbee at long, mistrusting him. Which did not happen.
So if shown in a right way, connections or subtle supernatural things can make sense to the audience - because that is what really happened.
Then, I saw Frisbee's actual speech at a gathering & it was so graceful. But, only 1 line from that speech was taken in the movie dialog, and the rest of his speech was watered down. Why not stick to the actual speech that was so graceful??
