Is New Super Mario Bros U Still Worth Playing?

  • With Super Mario Bros Wonder simply brimming with creativity and highly detailed animations, it's left people asking a lot of questions about the New Super Mario Bros games.
Especially New Super Mario Bros U, the previous 2D Mario platformer for the Wii U that was eventually ported to Switch as New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe.
The main question being, is U even worth playing at this point? Especially if Wonder just blows it out of the water, and Nintendo is still charging basically the same price for either product?
Well... it might seem easy to say initially.
Of course Wonder looks and plays simply brilliantly. Its the “newer” product and has a lot to show for itself in the marketplace of 2D platformers.
But what does, alternatively, U offer?
Well considering it was originally released in 2013, and in the New Super Mario Bros franchise, it may at first seem bland and uninspired when compared to a game like Wonder.
You can just really tell that the games are made with different standards when compared to each other.
That being said, I personally still believe that U has a lot going for it.
As other critics have already pointed out, they're both still Mario games, and do many similar things.
The core 2D Mario game design philosophy that really took off with Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World remains strong and present regardless of which game you pick.
You play as Mario, or other characters, and adventure through levels, collecting special coins and eventually getting to a flagpole at the end where in which the next level is made available to play.
New Super Mario Bros U has it's own bells and whistles of continuing the tried and true Mario formula, even if it doesn't look like that compared to Wonder.
Even going beyond the New Super Mario Bros franchise additions, U has many unique inclusions that we have so far only seen in it's release.

The Challenges mode in U is some of the greatest single player content in any 2D Mario game, such a shame it did not make a return.

Wonder plays a bit better multiplayer, but every 2D Mario always has great replay value for me no matter what

Yeah, even just doing another straight-up, normal playthrough at any time is fun. Not to mention all the other collectibles to do a full 100% playthrough.

It would be cool if you make a Rom Hacked video on the Newer Super Mario Bros Wii and DS games, they improve upon the standard "New" formula, with way more interesting level design. I loved playing to the completion the DS one last year.

If you just didn't compare U to Wonder or the other NSM games, it's an amazing game.

I feel like U is a bit better for multiplayer if you just want to hang out. Wonder constantly blows your mind, while U is great for talking over.

    I prefer U tbh
    both r good games but wonder has flaws too;
    - Yoshi's are playable, would prefer if u could find them
    - No baby yoshi :c
    - Less powerups
    -No colliding in multiplayer
-No koopalings/the bossfights r really bad

No Baby Yoshi is a good point. As well as the other points, too. To each their own!

Wonder is like a boyfriend/girlfriend you had passion see something lovely and mind blowing with all the things you see with him/her
New super mario bros U is like a group of friends
    Just do chaos
    AND MORE CHAOS
So yeah, the two had things xd

The only thing I enjoy about NSMBU is New Super Luigi U, to the point where I just play the physical Wii U copy of it without NSMBU. I'd say NSMB2 or Wii would be more worthwhile, but if you're really itching for 2D Mario, U is alright.

New Super Luigi U is awesome! I would definitely put U over 2 in terms of what I'd consider more worthwhile to play through. Any "New" game is great, really. But I agree that the physical copy of Luigi U is the way to go. I have a Wii U but I never got a physical of Luigi U and it still bothers me to this day aha

The original Wii U one is a lot cheaper. Might consider that one.

Yes new Super Bros U, is worth playing, I will defend the new Super Mario Bros games, I love these games and I have new Super Mario Bros U Deluxe on Switch and it’s great, yes Super Mario Bros Wonder is better and more modern but there’s something nostalgic about New Super Mario Bros U as I loved the original DS version.

Yeah, all the NSMB games are great. Despite many claiming the style became repetitive, I never felt it did. I always felt was enough "new" to justify playing through it. They're all solid 2D Mario platformers, from DS to Wii U.

I find there's redeeming qualities, but "meh" is unfortunately accurate
