  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder JUST released and to say the least, it's gotten critical acclaim. But considering the prior 2D Mario games being New Super Mario Bros. games, there's now the question. Is New Super Mario Bros. BAD? This question is even more apparent after playing Super Mario Bros. Wonder. In this retrospective, we'll be putting Super Mario Bros. Wonder up against the other 2D Mario game on Nintendo Switch, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. Which is better? Super Mario Bros. Wonder Versus New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe?
This is going to be quite a busy month for the channel. Expect reviews of WarioWare Move It, Super Mario RPG, and of course Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Wave Six.

i know the game says that Toadette is an "easy" mode character but the only changes are that 100 seconds are added to the clock and that you get a power-up that is just the acorn suit with only change being that you get one save when you fall in specifically a bottomless pit

You forgot that Toadette swims as if she is in Penguin form and Peachette's glide is slower than the Flying Squirrel form. This makes it mandatory to occasionally stop gliding for a small amount of time in Flying Squirrel Ovation if there isn't a Super Acorn in your inventory. This is because for some reason, the game replaces all Super Acorns except for very few with Super Crowns when playing as Toadette. None of the few that weren't replaced are located in Flying Squirrel Ovation, despite that course needing it the most. The same course is also impossible to clear as Nabbit, but somehow that's still an option. In the original Wii U version, attempting to play as Nabbit in Flying Squirrel Ovation would instead make you play as a Mii.

Tbh i honestly think the "Powerups" category should've gone to NSMBU, for one simple reason, in Mario U it's way easier to choose what power up you want to bring inside levels, there toad houses, enemies on the map and sometimes even Powerups just lying on the map, and the inventory system allows you to go inside a level with your preferred power up at any time, and if you don't have it, simply go to a toad house and pick your favourite, in Wonder, there's been several times where I just wanted another power up in a specific level, either because I thought it would make the level more fun or simply as a change of pace, there's long stretches of the game where you'll always find the same power up, but never any of the others, and since there's no inventory system, item houses or literally anything else that could give you a powerup, you're either forced to replay an older level just to get your favourite powerup, or constantly carry it in your sub item slot, where if you lose it, it's gone and the only other option is replaying an older level, which while the levels are fun, being forced to replay them to get a certain powerup that you could very easily lose in the very next level you play is very cumbersome, and I'm only so mad because the power ups in wonder are some of the best in the entire series, they're so fun to use, but the game is set up in a way where you'll only be able to use the ones the game hands out to you at a specific time and not the ones you actually want.
For that reason alone Mario U just handles powerups in a much better way than wonder. In terms of the actual power ups themselves, wonder does have better ones, but in terms of how they were implemented, Mario U just did it in a much better way.

I just found a solution for the lack of an inventory today. This only works once you've reached Deep Magma Bog, but for the Drill Mushroom, this can also work once you've reached Sunbaked Desert.
For all power-ups, go to the Search Party course 'Item Park'. This course contains all four of the game's power-ups at the start, and like all Search Party courses, you can exit the course from the left, which unlike doing so from the pause screen, will save your status prior to exiting. You can also choose to exit in normal or Super form if you want, by breaking the blocks at the start in Elephant or Drill form and taking damage from the Spike Ball.
A free Drill Mushroom can also be found in the Break Time! course 'Treasure Vault', unlocked by completing the course 'Armads on the Roll' in Sunbaked Desert, which also has a way to exit from the left. The same applies to the Elephant Fruit in another Break Time! course, 'Hot-Hot Rocks', but this isn't as useful because it is unlocked after Item Park.
Edit: I just noticed Item Park does not include the Fire Flower. Using the 'All Fire Power' badge unlocked after clearing Bowser's Rage Stage should help with this.

@@murderman8578 that's not replayibility, that's just playing the game. 100% a 2d mario game is not that difficult anyway, all you have to do is not dash to the end of the course and actually explore said course for secrets and such. Most people probably just hop back into a level if they missed something, and Wonder isn't that long of a game either so after you've put 10-15 hours in and you've already 100% completed it, all you can do is replay the entire game again once you feel like it. Replyaibility comes from usually endless gamemodes, are long trials of challenges that can keep the player invested for days after they've completed the actual game. Even multiplayer modes that you fight against your friends will always have different outcomes and fun moments that could bring people back infinitly. Wonder isn't really a game focused around multiplayer though, especially with how the camera works and the removal of collision and no longer being able to pick anyone up. I would say the chaos of the new super mario bros games was its main replayibility because it will forever and always be funny to fuck with your friends, but with Wonder, it feels more like everyone is fighting against the games camera, rather than each other which makes it worse in the mulitplayer department compared to the new super mario bros games in my opinion. You can argue that statement but not that beating a game 100% is deemed good replayibility because then 90% of games would have good replay value because at least 90% of games have a 100% completion task to work to but that doesn't qualify if a game is necessarily good for replay value.

Aside from the searching side levels that were clearly built around multiplayer and the sensor badge, there were very rarely secrets hidden in the less than fair ways Mario U regularly resorted to hiding it's secrets (off-screen, invincible blocks, and fake walls, often without any hints towards their location or tools to help find them). I could excuse Boom Boom being fought over and over in Super Mario Bros 3 because of limited hardware from back then and he wasn't the only boss character, but having this trend in modern games like U, 3D Land, and Wonder is just so baffling and frustrating! It gives us new worlds to explore and plenty of new enemies, but the dev team couldn't bother to put in that same creative diversity for the game's bosses? To not only have it be the same character at the end four times, but to even have two of the worlds end with NO boss is really deflating. New Wii and U put a lot more effort combing through every single level making sure the camera felt good for four players as much as they could. Wonder has way too many levels where the camera prevents multiplayer from being fun. Good luck if one player has the crown but can't make it past a challenge and there's no way to die. The only games I can think of which benefit from having a timer are games like Sonic or RPGs in certain scenarios. Sonic uses the timer as a way of ranking your speed and as a barometer for how well you’re doing and improving. Timers are useful in games that use them for a reason, even Mario uses time limits well, like for instance Super Luigi U and the strict time limit being used as a way to encourage speedy gameplay, and to force the player to make decisions they otherwise wouldn’t because they have limited time.
A timer in games has its use cases and shouldn’t be blanket labeled as “bad” it’s not bad in its concept, it’s bad in its execution. Even modern Sonic games don’t kill you for reaching the 10 minute mark anymore, now they just don’t give you a good score or rank. It’s really just dependent on the game, so it’s best to take it on a case by case basis.

I had more fun with NSMU than Wonder. So far I am the only person admitting this but I am being honest. I found the regular worlds of Wonder easy and short. And worst of all, almost no good secrets. Big coins and secret exits too easy to find. Some wonder flower effects are interesting, but others are not and feel more like a Kirby minigame. The badge chalenges and the Special world, on the other side, are very difficult, specially the later. Some pointless ultra-skill challenges without exploring or discovery. What is the point of a sky jumping stage with your character invisible? I know NSMU has old graphics and old ideas, but the difficulty is much more balanced and the star coins and secret exits much more fun to find.

    • @nvssgoat
      @nvssgoat Před 6 měsíci +3

This i have to agree. I love Wonder, it's better than U in many aspects but it's just painfully easy for like 99% of the time before you randomly stumble on some hard level that's gonna make you lose some lives but not for the level itself, just for the purple coins. And even then you can just collect it and die since it stays collected after you die.
And I also agree to the fact it's short. The thing is, I decided to stop playing regularily mid game to make shorter sessions, and I feel that's making it better? I feel like it's more like a game where you pop out your Switch, play 30min-1h to complete a dozen levels then turn it off, nothing like the long worlds of NSMBU that with all secrets can only be completed with long playthroughs.
I'm still giving slightly more points to Wonder for being an overall less "boring" game as in the presentation, but to me a lot of pure gameplay aspects are better in U, from the triple jumps, the bosses, power-ups, and I feel like this review is straight up unfair to U, with a clear recency bias towards Wonder and the overall hypetrain over its more quirky presentation.

@@nvssgoat I was so mad at Wonder for throwing us that evil final final marathon after a child-level difficulty game. This final final course is very unfair and unbalanced, I think it is a design flaw. And it gave me tendinitis. But even not mad now I still think I had more fun playing NSMU. Graphics, animation and soundtrack in Wonder are far superior (the music in this game made me love video game songs again, I had not felt that since SM World and Sonic 1/2), no doubt, but the playthrough is better in NSMU. If NSMU had more interesting powerups than that lame flying squirrel maybe people would respect it more.

I think that the fight was way closer than this video tells. For me, Wonder's final boss was very dissapointing, and I preffer New Super Mario Bros U one, and I liked Bowser Jr's fights in NSMBU, but the only decent boss in Wonder is the final boss. So I think NSMBU Wins that point. And about multiplayer, I preffer the NSMBU one, and if you don't want to play as a easy mode as Toadette, just don't use the peachette power up. Maybe the few power ups that Mario Wonder has are better handled, but I personally don't like any of them as much as the NSMBU ones, specially the ones that let you fly in order to explore the levels. Mario Wonder still wins because I think level design is the most important point and Mario Wonder is way better in that way, but is a very close fight.

I understand the disdain for NSMBU - it’s a port of a Wii U game that was already a rehash of 4 other NSMB games. If you played all (or even some) of the games, it seems bland and recycled. But for someone like me who only played NSMB DS, the game feels fairly fresh to me and the definitive HD version of all of those NSMB games. If you only get ONE NSMB game, then get NSMBU Deluxe IMO. Its essentially a HD reimagining of Super Mario Bros 3, with your classic glass, desert, water, snow etc levels.
It’s also the introduction of Peachette and I really like the acorn power up. It’s also quite challenging.
I think Nintendo learned from their mistakes and will time their future 2D Mario releases carefully and not wear them down like the NSMB series.

The level designs are so much better than the ones in NSMBU, and its among my favourite NSMB games along with NSMBDS, and NSMBWii. Super Mario Bros Wonder is very creative, but all of the bosses are Bowser Jr. In the NSMB games we had different bosses. NSMBDS: we got unique bosses. In the rest of the NSMB games, we got the Koopalings. I also hope in the future that Nintendo Ports the previous NSMB games expecially NSMBWii to the switch. Going into this video, I entirely expected Super Mario Bros. Wonder to win. And...it did by a long shot.
I'm gradually warming up to the idea of Wonder and am excited to try it out. It has potential to be one of my favorite Mario games.
But...that doesn't mean that I magically hate New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. In case you don't know, I kinda like the NSMB games. For what they lack in ambition and aesthetic, they make up for in accessibility and relative ease. Likewise, Boom Boom and the Koopalings are completely inoffensive to me.
As a bigger point? Chances are, SMB Wonder will most likely not replace my special love and memories for Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario All-Stars, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. As three games in my top 20 of all time, they're practically untouchable.
I feel safe in saying that U Deluxe will most likely get further swept under the rug by most people. I, for one, enjoy picking anyone I want in single player and am happy to see Toadette in a home console romp for the first time. For those reasons, I think that I can still come back to it from time to time. Also, I didn't know that Baby Yoshis can eat Boos...

Most people misunderstand the meaning of a timer- it’s not about giving you a time frame just to finish, it’s about forcing you to keep going and giving you score based n your time. The score was crucial- destroying blocks, killing enemies and going fast all rewarded score, and finding the ideal balance of those 3 categories awarded the highest score and thus improved replayability. This is the part where Wonder fails because it’s too streamlined and the difficulty is not there! Finishing most 5 star levels on a first go?!!!! That’s sucks. SMB3 was so much better in that regard. Wonder keep drawing attention with the graphics and effects but the depth is gone. So SMBUD was better in my opinion

I really didn't like the final wonder fight. Also personally I prefer NSMBUD multiplayer because
    1. No shared lives
    2. No crown, everyone on the screen is shown
    3. I don't care about 1 player always having to be playing on easy

This was a bit of a pointless video. It’s already clear to most people from the high praise and review scores it got that Wonder is the more impressive game and all you did was give every category bar one to it anyway. The way you presented the video at the beginning was that there may actually be elements where U is better, which I personally think is true, but then you still just gave virtually every category to Wonder. This kind of comparison only really has value if it offers a different take on what the established majority opinion is which yours doesn’t. For what it’s worth, imo the bosses, difficulty and side content should all have gone to U to give a more balanced view on the games. I would even say that the music is, not better as such, but more memorable in U. Those tunes stick in my head whereas I’m really struggling to remember anything from Wonder. That’s possibly because it was quite easy to collect everything in a large number of levels on the first play through meaning I didn’t have a specific reason to go back to them once they were done, which goes back to the difficulty. I loved Wonder but I think some of the praise is inflated because people are so happy to not have a 2D Mario in the bland New style but it was still lacking a bit for me. I was expecting a much more nuanced look a both games from this video but just got someone who wants to gush about Wonder right after release so this was disappointing and you didn’t gain a subscriber from it.

The problem with NSMBU's level design is that so many elements are ripped straight from every other NSMB game. It's what makes the game come off as unoriginal, that and the art style that is very similar to the two games that came prior to it.

I think this video got it mostly right, but I disagree about bosses. I expected something much more versatile and interesting - there were one or two interesting twists but not enough.
Also, most levels are much too easy and offer very little challenge. Yes, there are many levels but way too many are short breaktimes or search party or badge challenges - not actual complete levels. Just pieces of levels.
The game looks and sounds great, but with the exception of a handful of levels, I walked/ran through them on first try. Maybe I’ve played too much 2D Mario (When I was 10 I played Super Mario Bros 3 when it was new), but I feel that game by game there is less and less challenge. While being difficult is not automatically a good thing, being too easy makes the game feel a bit too bland. Bros 3 and even Odyssey get the challenge right - fun, not overly difficult. Completing them feels like something I am proud of.
Wonder feels like a nice little snack between big meals: It is fun while I am playing, many of the wonder gimmicks are great (but makes the regular 2d sections pale in comparison), but to me, it doesn’t feel like a masterpiece, more like a transition.
Still, there is a freshness about it that hints of an interesting future for Mario franchise. As of now, for me, it does not fulfill the expectations hyped.

Wonder is way too easy, aside from a few of the very last levels. It’s still a great game but I’m not even that good at games and I beat it full 100% without using any badges unless they were required.

Wonder has better graphics and better animations. Everything else NSMBU does better, especially the level design. I replayed NSMBU after I finished Wonder and in direct comparison I found NSMBU much better.
