  • The New Super Mario Bros. series is one often criticized for its repetitiveness and not much changing between each sequel. But about a time before this series became the controversial topic that is today? A time when the title of "new" actually meant something. In this video we take a deep dive into the game that started off this ever so notorious series. This is my New Super Mario Bros. DS retrospective

My favorite part of Mario bros DS is that it actually has unique and interesting bosses and it is like the only 2D Mario game to have that. It’s really sad that super princess peach has better bosses than 90% of 2D Mario games

  • @fernandothehorse

Aw man, you’re a blue shell hater. There’s nothing better in this game than completing a level entirely inside of the blue shell. Pure bliss

  • @squiddler7731

I still remember beating the final boss as mini mario just to see what would happen, and if Peach would crouch down or something for the kiss because of how short he is.

While I see people’s points I still feel like each new super Mario bros game had an identity and were all good games, honestly I think the only problem with the series is how close each game came out and that nsmbU was pretty much the Wii U’s only launch title

  • @Megaman.ExE7

I still remember playing this game for the 1st time.

Words can't express how much this game means to me. I've 100%ed it so many times and it always just feels like revisiting an old friend every time. I remember getting my first ever red ds lite with this game already in it and just having my mind blown playing it for the first time. A true classic that has passed the test of time.

I love how NSMBWii Overworld plays over the NSMB one at around

You can instantly stop your momentum with the blue shell by letting go of the run button, then quickly press down then up on the d pad. This should start a ground pound, stopping all your forward momentum, and pressing up cancels the ground pound so you now can maneuver normally all in a blink of an eye. The blue shell has its ups and downs for sure but once you have a good grip on the maneuverability in this game you can definitely minimize its downsides as well as amplifying its strengths

No other game could replicate the feeling of New than the original DS

  • @SandmanURL

I like how unique DS was, really disappointed that the sequels never followed up with that. At least U had some great level design

When Mike goes outside, the NSMB snow music plays.

The first NSMB game I played was NSMB2. I got the game for Christmas in 2012 and i really enjoyed it. In 2013 i saw a friend that had the Original NSMB for the DS, i gave it a try and i really enjoyed it causing me to want my own copy of the game. In 2021 i downloaded the game on emulator, i completed it and it was far enjoyable than NSMB2 and NSMBU. NSMBWii was also awesome but it was basically NSMBDS with updated stuff and newer features. I remember NSMBWii was the first NSMB game i saw in 2011 because i noticed people playing it. NSMBDS, NSMBWii and NSMB2 are my childhood NSMB games.

It's nice to see some love for this game, as I remember it incredibly fondly. A lot of people seem to nostalgically laud NSMB Wii as the greatest in the series, perhaps because of the Wii's more widespread popularity, but even Wii removed and changed a lot of the things that made DS unique. I remember when it was brand new, and it was an absolute blast--finding new secret exits, figuring out how to get to the extra worlds (which he didn't really mention in this video), the overall atmosphere, the amazing levels in World 8, the incredible boss fights, the great level design, and the new power-ups really made it a memorable and stand-out experience. Future entries repeat a lot of the things that they shouldn't have (exact same world order, plot, and gameplay loop), while messing up things that made the original great (no original bosses, worsening level design, re-used music, excluding the koopa shell and mini mushroom (which were totally awesome).

Was my first video game, and one of my favourites too. I didn't even play the game when Mario Vs. Luigi was still playable, the servers were shut down when I first played it. And I still loved it.

This. Is a crowning accomplishment. It might seem simple, but this deep dive is honestly one of your best videos. Ironically, despite talking about a usually generic game, your word choice was varied, your ideas unique, and your editing and music PHENOMENAL and I immediately took out my DS to go back to the game. WELL DONE MIKE!

As someone who started playing NSMB DS for the first time, this video came out at the perfect time. Another great video Mariomikester, keep it up

If you really like it, you can always play ROM hacks like Newer Super Mario Bros DS. I currently play it on my DS using a R4. It's incredible how amazing it is, but also how underrated, because of how much ROM hacks are still a small niche.
