- I've played through Pokemon Crystal quite a bit over the years, but it's been a while since I've been really captivated by it... until Pokemon Crystal Clear came around.

Okay, so I know I said I wasn't gonna revisit the Kanto region again for a while... but this time it's both Johto and Kanto... so it's fine.
Pokemon Crystal Clear was created by user ShockSlayer, and man is it one of the greatest ROM hacks I have ever had the pleasure of playing.
It's a brilliant re-visitation, and in many ways improvement, over Pokemon Crystal version.
It's really a sequel to Pokemon Crystal, while also clearly being it's own thing... while also being a masterclass in how to implement insane levels of customization into a video game.
It's basically an open-world version of Pokemon generation 2, where you can pick any city or town to start your journey in, along with a variety of trainer sprites and colour edits to choose from, and finally, a wide selection of starter pokemon to choose from, too.
Heck, you can be a Team Rocket member with a starter Porygon if you want... there is a great variety of options.
I decided to start in Azalea town, with a Blue sprite I coloured green, and an elekid.
Things like difficulty range depending on the starter pokemon you select, as well as which town to start off in.
It's interesting to note that your player starts off in a basement apartment, with a secret doorway to a cave network available basically anywhere you pick.
And from there, you start off attacking the Pokemon league in any order you so choose.
The player can freely navigate the two regions, and the levels of wild pokemon, enemy trainer pokemon, and gym challenges, will scale depending on your progress.
And you may have noticed, you can select which Pokemon from your party will follow your trainer spirte on the overworld with the select button, and this is just such a brilliant extra touch.
From there you'll realize that many roadblocks that once existed that required things like HMs or other story requirements to pass are gone, leading to basically everywhere being able to explored. - Hry
I always love the look of the 8-bit Pokemon sprites
The sprites from Crystal especially have aged beautifully. The animations are short but gorgeous.
i've played this a couple years ago, and remembering really liking it, the second gen is also the best gen in my opinion, maybe i should check it out again. thanks for the reminder👌
Definitely great for a revisit. So many different combinations to start off with, and the challenge is great if you want a harder difficulty
I've played this ROM hack around 3 times now, and every single time I always find something new that I didn't know about in my previous playthroughs
It just has so much content within it. Super cool to discover things in a playthrough

It's a good rom hack! It's not too old either.
As a fan of the band Streetlight Manifesto, I lost my mind when I recognized Elite 4 Hunneybuns theme as an 8bit cover of one of their songs. Also being able to catch a Shadow Lugia was chefs kiss. Crystal Clear is one of if not my favorite hacks.
I gotta go catch me a Shadow Lugia! And also, thats cool that you picked up the cover track! Gotta do a full listen to the OST to get a better appreciation for the work that went into the sounds of Crystal Clear
@@anotherblowncartridge The song is called A Moment of Silence if you are interested. The genre is ska which made me even more surprised to hear it. It is also one of their slower songs and not even a popular one of theirs all things considered. Such a weird choice. But yeah there are so many secrets. Fighting Yellow from the manga was also a nice surprise. In all honesty though, this game might be dropping to number 2 for gbc hacks soon. Pokemon Coral is shaping up to be absolutely amazing and updates will be coming soon for development for Pokemon Delta which is set in the Holon region (the one from the TCG where delta species came from) and the ost they dropped hints at visiting at least 3 other regions of having them represented in some way. Highly recommend checking them out. Well atleast Coral for now since Delta hasn't released.
@@missingnovgc Coral and Delta are on my radar for sure! Love Prism so I'm very hyped for new Gen 2 rom hacks. And I'll check out that song, I'm a fan of ska.
For me, this is one of the best GBC Hackroms, together with Prism and Coral.
My team was Vaporeon, Jolteon, Fearow, Marowak, Tyranitar and Alakazam. I completed everything minus The Arena

There is a correction I'd like to add though, at 2:23 ; Wild Pokemon do NOT scale with the amount of gym badges you have. Only trainers and gyms scale with gym badges. This is why certain starting towns are considered more difficult, they're surrounded by higher level Pokemon.

Just a disclaimer to anyone downloading the hack: The creator, Shockslayer, has been accused of plagiarism, gatekeeping code, causing drama, responding to criticism with hostility, and generally being over-sensitive and ego-centric. Play the hack by all means, but just stay away from the community if you want to avoid a brain ache.
This is highly disappointing to learn. I'm going to research more into this. Very unfortunate.
@@anotherblowncartridgeContent VS Creator, there's nothing wrong with acknowledging the effort and complexity of the hack, but the creator is also a bit of a hack, but in a different sense. :P

I enjoy this. Pokemon crystal clear is one of my favorite gbc rom hack. I really enjoy shiny hunting in this game.

If you haven't played yter SmithPlays' Crystal Legacy, you shoukd :) it's not as much of a new experience as Crystal Clear, of course- it's at its core just Crystal- but it has a hell of a lot of QOL improvements, level balancing, gyms 5-6-7 can be beaten in any order and change level accordingly, etc, and it's my new favourite way to experience the GenII story!
I've heard about Crystal Legacy. While I mostly tend to play translations or "new experience" rom hacks, it definitely feels like a hack I'll end up covering eventually
I might gave this hack rom a try, despite I don't like 8-bit games that much, I wanted to try a Gen 2 Pokemon game and I don't want to wait for whenever they decided to put on the NSO.
This is the Gen 2 game to try. This, or if you're looking for an official release, Pokemon Crystal.

but what is the best crystal rom? Prism? Crystal Clear? Other? there can only be 1 king after you played all.
Well, as far as hacks of Pokemon Crystal go, if you want to play through Johto/Kanto again, it doesn't get better than Crystal Clear. If you want an original region with updated mechanics and Pokemon added in, there's few better than Prism.
However, if I have to pick one, I lean towards Prism simply because of the crazy amount of original content within.
