The Origins of the Islamic Prayer [ENGLISH]

  • Muslims are obligated to pray 5 times a day towards Mecca. However, the Qur'an does not mention 5 daily prayers, but mentions only 3 explicitly by name and in separate occasions only mentions 3 prayers (11:114, 17:78-79) instead of 5. We will learn that Muslims practice is influenced by many contemporary religions and traditions of the time.

It was narrated that Anas ibn Maalik said: Abu Dharr narrated that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The roof of my house was split open when I was in Makkah, and Jibreel (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) came down and split open my chest and washed it with Zamzam water. Then he brought a golden vessel filled with wisdom and faith and poured it into my chest, then he sealed it. Then he took me by the hand and ascended with me into the lowest heaven. When I reached the lowest heaven Jibreel said to the gatekeeper, ‘Open up!’ He said, ‘Who is this?’ He said, ‘Jibreel.’ He said, ‘Is there anyone with you?’ He said, ‘Yes, Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is with me.’ He said, ‘Has his mission begun?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ And when it was opened we went up into the lowest heaven… Then Allaah enjoined upon my ummah fifty prayers, and I came back until I passed by Moosa who said, ‘What has Allaah enjoined upon your ummah?’ I said, ‘He has enjoined fifty prayers.’ He said, ‘Go back to your Lord, for your ummah will not be able to bear that.’ So I went back and He reduced it. Then I came back to Moosa and said, ‘He has reduced it.’ He said, ‘Go back to your Lord, for your ummah will not be able to bear that.’ So I went back and He reduced it further. Then I came back to Moosa and said, ‘He has reduced it further.’ He said, ‘Go back to your Lord, for your ummah will not be able to bear that.’ So I went back and He said, ‘(The prayers) are five but (the reward) is fifty. The Sentence that comes from Me cannot be changed [cf. Qaaf 50:29].’ Then I went back to Moosa and he said, ‘Go back to your Lord.’ But I said, ‘I feel shy before my Lord.’…”

Salam brothers. It really boggles my mind, why no one challenged this narrative for centuries. It is full of loose ends. It means Muhammad (PBUH) was not intelligent and matured with wisdom enough to understand that 50 will be too much for his ummah. And he had to go back again and again as per the direction of Musa (AS). It undermines the ultimate wisdom of The Creator of the worlds as he also could not comprehend (Nouzubillah) and kept on changing. Even if we think Prophet moved through some sort of portal to travel between skies, it has to have some strict rules and Prophet could just roam around in it as if it was our city street. Why Musa (AS) was at seventh sky why not Ibrahim(AS). And why only seven rasools in seven skies, where are the rest, when we know that there are no distinctions among prophets. We know Quran was written many ages ago and kept secured at Lawhe Mahfuz. So Allah had to change every time, while decreasing the wakts. 50 wakts surely needed completely different types of rituals so was that also continuously changed? When Allah SWT says there is 'no change in my order, no change in my Sunnatallah'. One hadith says Prophet went straight from makka to the heavens while the other one says he went to Masjidul Al Aqsa first (as mentioned in Quran). Why Allah SWT needed Prophet to go to him when the whole Quran was revealed to him in earth? And since all the previous prophets were dead, so were they resurrected only to pray behind him in earth at Al Aqsa? Islam is not a mystical myth. We were even fooled for years with the concept that tashahud (which I USED to recite while sitting) was conversation between Allah SWT and prophet during me'raj. For Quran, its 'We hear and we obey' for all the rest we must ask question. Thank You

There is no concern in Islam having similar practices to those of other religions what may have been the case most likely is that they carried on those practices from their righteous prophets from when they were sent to them even after they went astray, started associating others with Allah and denying later prophets.

The word Salat doesn't mean prayer. The root meaning of Salat is commitment/duty/obligation/adherence.
The Quran gives an indication of this meaning in 75:31-32:
"And he did not confirm nor Salla,
    But denied and turned away."
If the antonym for denying is confirming, then the antonym for turning away must be....? To turn towards or commit or adhere etc.
The word for prayer in the Quran is Dua.

Salat has been wrongfully interpreted as a “ritual” prayer thru Hadith that’s why we are able to connect it with paganism religions but the reality is salat in the Quran is not a ritual prayer. No where in the Quran does it give instruction to preform a ritual rather the word salat comes from the root صل which means to connect or adhere to something closely. When you apply the meaning of the root it becomes clear that there is no rituals but rather an abstract way of connecting with God. Not a ritual where you put your head on the ground

The word which is being translated as PRAYER in the Quran by some translators actually means adherence or to follow, not the ritual prayer. People who know Arabic and understands the root word system, knows this well.. Your whole argument is based on the ritual prayer, which really has no base in the Quran. Some claim that these are the sessions, where the revelations are taught to people. Please do research this. Also there is a claim that the current ritual practice of prayer was introduced by the mother of Harun Al Rashid (Harun was of Persian origin) 5th Abbasid Caliph, as literally she was the defacto ruler at that time. Allah knows best. Also you are mixing things up to show that Islam is wrong.. Islam is just following the Quran and not the rest of it which was created by man.. Nothing disproves Quran from your video. Why don't you reconsider looking into the Quran with proper translation.

Why doesn't someone clean up this portion of Islam and go back to 3 prayers a day ? Shun the pagan roots of Zoroastrianism and prostrate down only before Allah and pray and glorify Him from the heart! From what I understand, the folding of arms, repetitive prostrations, repeating of words originated from Arabian pagan rituals along with influences of the Talmud and Orthodox Christianity origins. Seems too Roman Catholic to me to pray this way.

If you read the Quran you will come to know the true massage of Allah. Believe in one God.. so to all the religions out there all you have to do is believe in one God while keeping your culture alive... so yes the zoroastrian keep their culture while accepting ones of God.

Monotheism has been around since as far back, some are asking for proof of this on here, we know in the original Torah prophets like Adam noah etc preached it long before, considering we place him in eastern turkey, a place that eventually became part of persia centuries later, no telling if this served as motivation , even Hinduism started as a monotheistic faith, Judaism as an example featured things like the ablution and prayer far before zoroastrianism did. the zoroaster himself travelled when he left home at 20 so he may well have adopted various principles. Moses abraham jesus are all mentioned as falling on theyre face and praying, isnt it ironic that christians dont pray like this depsite all the biblical prophets doing so and the advent of christianity before muahmmads arrival? have the completion of islam in makkah and medina that adopted the same practice as mentioned throughout the christian and jewish world.
You simply cannot rule out that this could have been the other way round

There have been two prayers custom in Zoroastrianism; 1- 3 times of prayers and 2- 5 times of prayers. I think that the 5-times custom is derived from the Islamic prayers, as its texts are newer. Even it seems that they have plused the translation of Besmellah arrahman errahim to their xshnaotra Ahurahe mazdaav. Meanwhile, in Shi'a jurisprudence, the noon and afternoon prayers are recited together, and the dawn and night prayers are recited together too. Please stop your probably jwish misleading. jews should change themselves after thousands of years.
