For 12 hundred buck's people better be living in the Canadian mountains I'll stick with 3 hundred and buy a Gotham coat is amazing in thirty degrees had a t shirt under the Gotham and I was perfectly fine

As someone who's between medium and large, I tend to choose bomber jackets simply so I can buy a large and still have a reasonably tight seal around the bottom. The sleeves on my Gotham 2 do let in a little bit of cold air, so I have to wear a sweat shirt to fill in all of the empty space. Other than that, I have to say that it's one of the two best coats I've ever owned.
I’m thinking the chest pockets may have been designed with backpackers in mind, allowing you to use the pockets without the waist strap of the a backpack in the way. Thanks for the review.
Just got the Gotham 3 and it's a great jacket hands down had a nuptse and it was warm but 2 big differences is Gotham has a hood and waterproof exterior nuptse is thin cheap hood so for 20 buck's more no brainer buy a Gotham

The “cut-out” you refer to is only because the hood is larger on the mcmurdo. The mcmurdo also has the built in balaclava in the hood. They are for two different purposes. The mcmurdo is a parka and the Gautham is a modified version toned down to be more stylish.
Gotham has the built in face mask as well, like the mcmurdo. Neither jacket has a balaclava, as balaclava covers the head as well. You have the jackets' hood to do that job.
I had a McMurdo 1 from like 15 years ago and tried on a 3 recently. Wow the quality took a nosedive.

Even though it's the end of winter, I've been looking for a Gotham 3 in medium and it's literally sold out everywhere in the colors I want. Goes to show you it's a good jacket.

You hadn't mentioned how much the McMurdo jacket didn't appeal because of height. I just found this video and I'm not sure how tall you are and if that affected final rulling.
And I have owened 4 gothems in the past and I think each had a different lining. So what are these linings.

I just ordered the Gotham 3 today. The greenish brown looking color. Is that size calculator on the North Face website accurate?¿?.
Are they both the same in sizing , cuz I can't try on the Gotham but found the parka on the larger size...
I was thinking of the McMurdo 3 at $449 CAD but now with the Boxing Day sale, the Gotham 3 looks like it’s a better buy at $280 CAD. The McMurdo seemed like the better one at just $50 more but I don’t know if it’s $160 better.

Great review. Are the Gotham III front pockets fleece lined? If not, are they still warm without gloves?
Yes, they are fleece lined. But it really means nothing because they're not insulated at all - the pockets are in the shell of the jacket outside of the down layer. It's the only real weakness of the jacket.
I had a McMurdo I from the early 2000s and it's crazy how they declined in quality and features since then

Considerably. The luxurious double fleeced cuffs alone is a grave testament to the decline in quality. The cuffs on this jacket are worse than something from Burlington Coat Factory.

I've heard complaints about the McMurdo zipper. Are people not using them right or is it a bad design?
People complain about EVERY jacket with two runners on the zipper. I wouldn't let that stop me from buying one.
