Another job well done here. I just like the look of these King class locomotives for some reason. I would say that you are right, for the price it's not a bad locomotive at all. Plus, you had my favorite locomotive you've reviewed, the Grange locomotive, out on the line and she still looks great! Keep up the good work!
Wow, I remember seeing this type engine on the severn valley railway, however it did break down when departing a station... :( Good work Sam, keep it up :D
What an amazing loco! Although I can't help it giggling and the 3rd line on the side of the box from 1:40 to 1:51, but it just looks gorgeous, doesn't it? I just wish I could own one of those, but for the price. Awesome video and very good advanced Haloween Sam!(I am sure that there's a special Haloween video coming up soon!) With lots of cute tank engines, Ad.
haha yeah - good old ass locomotive ;D But yeah - these really are lovely, and for the money you can't go wrong! Oh yes - Halloween should certainly be interesting! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
A fine looking loco Sam, you can read about these locos in magazines etc; but your reviews are unbiased, and full of useful information to help the viewer evaluate how good or bad each loco is, Keep up the great work......Bob
Thanks Robert - that's very kind of you mate - unlike the magazines, I have no motivation to say in the good books of the manufacturers, so you'll always get my honest opinion!! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I couldn't name any GWR engine around the layout, except your most beautiful GWR model to date: Broome Manor. I couldn't even see the odd one out. However, if I were to buy a GWR King engine, I'd try to find the preserved King Edward 2nd who is in BR Blue. The colour suits her wonderfully well. But aside from this, I'm so glad you included Broome Manor in this video; she always puts a cheerful grin on my face. You should show her off in more videos; she is without doubt top of the heap for me (an engine after my own heart, she's already stolen it).
Hi Sam the reason for the outside front axle boxes and inside rear boxes is to negotiate tight curves, the rear wheels need to clear the inside of the outside cylinders and the front outside axle boxes are to clear the frames which could not be cut back further due to the support needed for the inside cylinder block
Great review Sam of an awesome class of locomotive. My preference in livery is GWR Green but i have to admit i really like the look of BR Express Blue, it really does suit express passenger locos very well. In a future video i think a good idea would be to have your A2 pulling your rake of Pullman coaches. I look forward to your next video as always. Keep well and stay safe, regards Gary.
Sam, the reason for the 'outside axle boxes on The Kings was merely a 'space' issue. The inside cylinders were positioned more forward than the outside ones ( rather cramped in there ) so the 'boxes were placed outside the front bogie frames. I must say the look of the whole design of the front bogies gave the Kings a solid, powerful look at the front end. Hope these comments help 😎
I love the Castle/Hall class type locos. Also the A3s & A4s. I would like to see more running sessions with the Castle/Hall models if you haven’t done any in a while. I am currently playing catch up on your reviews. I ways enjoy a visit to your Railway.
The front bogey is strange because of those extra 2 internal cylinders. The cylinders took up too much space, not leaving any for the wheels to be held on from the inside. I was very lucky with one of the newer King class models. I paid £82 for King William IV, second hand, minimal use. Lovely model and great video as always William
When it comes to getting OO gauge models, I would normally always pick something in LNER. But the king class is one of the few engines I would pick over anything I would normally go for. And i must be really good at driving these in train sim, because the boiler pressure usually stays high, and the safety valves are releasing steam for about 90 percent of the trip, which gets a bit annoying after a while, and I’m usually ten to fifteen minutes early when going from Kingswear to St Exeter. I also think they look very sharp in BR blue.
Bullman scoring the Grange class for haulage I see! The King's passenger train must have had a demand for a food service with 2 restaurant cars in the consist! And being a Harry Potter movie fan I got a kick out of seeing the Hogwarts Express! Great vid as always.
I can tell I'm going to love this vid. Also on my local preserved railway in Paignton they have King Edward II and in real life she is really a lovely loco:)
My birthday is one month away and I really want the super modern, super detailed Hornby King class in BR blue with TTS sound, It is 6021 King Richard II.
Hey Sam, Ahh, I absoloutely love the King's. I would go as far and say that they are my favorite Standard Gauge loco. And also, I was wondering if you could review the Hornby J94?
haha no never heard that - good name though! ;D Glad you liked this anyway mate - I enjoyed running the different colours too! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Ooooo I really love the king class. Superb video Sam. Recently I got a Lima deltic “royal Scots grey” and class 50 “eagle” but I had a mallard before but I don’t like it cause it was secondhand and had some glue on it and some parts came off. So soon I’m getting a new mallard but I have a lot of money on me though. But I know that secondhand model locomotives are cheap though.
Looks a great color, although I usually prefer red. A decent model, I would have to sort out the coal as that does not look good, but that is not a big deal. I read about the accident to which you referred. It was in wartime, and happened somewhere in Somerset I think.
Thanks a lot Ian - ooh very nice - not many red locos from the GWR though!! Agreed, the coal wouldn't be great for a serious modeller, but I guess it'd make a good project! Ahh very interesting - sounds like she was lucky to survive it! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Actually, despite their size and handicaps, the Kings are widely considered to be among the best locomotives ever built by the GWR. They're my favourite.
What a great logo you should definitely test the king class is pulling power and what a great video this will be undoubtedly my next locomotive that I purchase which is saying a lot considering but so far I only have Thomas Locos
I can’t make any diffrences between the GWR Castle and King class, except for the BR blue coat. And another thing was that the remains of the price tag you ripped of blocked the Word King and the letters cl of class, which I think you will understand.
haha me neither - only the experts can tell the difference! You can see some differences if you have them side by side too! Thanks for watching - Sam :) haha they did indeed ;D
1:40 LMAO I noticed that the end of the box said "Ass Locomotive" due to the sticker being half covered by the King Class Locomotive name. Now its an Ass Locomotive running number 2 from the SOAT which stands for sitting on a toilet. XD That is probably the funniest moment on your channel besides the G2A GTA naming.
I much prefer pre-grouping engines. I like to see a Great Western crest on a Great Western engine. If it came in blue and with the GWR on it, I'd be happy :)
Nice one Sam,I love the Kings, certainly in my top 3 all time designs. As for the origin of that model, I'm not sure as to the origin, The first r-t-r 00 king was a Hornby one released in 1978. It WASN;T a good model, detail was terrible, ringfield in the tender, very light body, no cab glazing and a lot more besides. It got awful reviews. I brought one, and still have it, made a few alterations. I put A LOT of lead in the loco body, and additional weight on the boogie to stop it jumping off the track, put glazing in the cab etc, it improved it a bit but it was still lacking. Its one redeeming feature was that it was a good puller and could handle 10 coaches on my mates garden railway. Hornby only made it for a year and it wasn't in the 1980 catalog. Hornby announced a complete new king model that year, but before it got released Lima beat them to it. Their version was a lot better, another tender drive, but with the standard Lima mechanism. That came in GWR green and BR blue. A friend had the green one, not as good as the Hornby in pulling, but looked a lot better. Then in 1982 Hornby released their new king, the only thing it shared with th 78 version was the ringfield tender, and it was for the time a damn fine model, although a lot more expensive than both the Lima model or the earlier Hornby one (My 78 one cost £25 from Beatties - thats a name from the past! - not long after release. The Lima ones were about £30 on release and the new Hornby one around £40). Since then Hornby have had a King in the range, have aquired the Lima tooling, and have re-jigged and improved it several times - changed from tender to loco drive etc, so what the origin of that beauty is, hornby or lima... lord knows :) Keep up the good work Jon PS - you said a while back you had one of the Bachmann Marsh H2 Atlantics on pre-order. Has it arrived yet, I really wanna see what you make of it
Thanks a lot for the interesting comment Jon, much appreciated! Blimey I didn't know it dated back as far as 1978 - glad to hear they sorted it out in the end though!! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
My Hogwarts Express(tender pickup's) was broken in factory and i'm trying to repair it (funnel and cab screw mount split) any tips to give on repairing it?
Ahh sorry to hear that mate - yes I have a video showing how to restore them - you should find it on my maintenance playlist! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Wow, what an excellent model!! Also was the odd one out the manor at 18:16. I actually have a Hornby pug that came with "bill and Ben". On can you review the flying Scotsman br green tts sound ( don't mistake it for the lner green one!) KOOTPGB
Gorgeous loco! The NRM owns the first one built and it’d be nice if they stop worrying about money and restore her! I rank these and the Castles as the most successful GWR engines!
I doubt that it will ever run again, it would need to have the chimney, safety valve bonnet and cab height' cut down to fit under bridges on the mainline and without being on the mainline it's lost it's own largest source of revenue. The cost of the necessary warning systems would be another added factor.
Well that's news to me. I thought the only term in the UK was funnel, but chimney works too. I didn't know splashers was the correct terminology. I never knew that steam chest was terminology at all. Why did the UK dub of TTTE never say steam chest or chimney. Maybe the terminology is regional between shires
Fabulous loco. I have Hornby King George Vth with tender drive in blue. I paid £57 at Hattons 20 years ago. It is Top Link which was their super detail then. Could you review that please.
Ok so I’m not to sure, but I think the theme was Hornsby models, and the hogwarts express was a Bachman model, so I think the hogwarts express was the odd one out.
I was wrong about the two later liveries the shirt button and the Hawksworth G crest W which had been covered as limited editions but I would love to have seen an early BR crest green and the green Loco with British Railways on the tender this sounds terrible since I am asking for too much lol
1:42"ass locomotive"😂😂😂😂
haha I know!! xD
Oh my XD
Lol
Ha😆
The blue king is BEAUTIFUL! Great vid sam, well done
Thanks a lot mate - glad you thought so too! :D

haha thanks a lot mate - ooh absolutely, you can't beat them!! ;D

One of Hornby's best models! I've always wanted to get one. Beautiful model. Top marks to Hornby.
I agree - they are gorgeous! Hope you can get one some day! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
What a beauty. I’m sure I’ll crack and end up getting a King before long, despite it looking a bit out of place on my layout!
haha I don't blame you mate - hope you enjoy her if you get one! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Sam it was a great video as always and seeing her in blue is just great:)
Sam please can you do a comparison video between your old Hornby King class and your super modern, super detailed Hornby King class.
Great idea Adam - I definitely could do that! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
My birthday is one month away and I really want the super modern, super detailed Hornby King class in BR blue with TTS sound, It is 6021 King Richard II.

An excellent model indeed! Although mine is a couple years old now, I'd say the exact same time made as this one!
Thanks very much mate - ahh fantastic, glad to hear you have one of these beauties too! :D
Cheers,

Sam'sTrains are there any Thomas characters based on the king class
@@jmream2618 as far as I'm aware no, a king class has not been featured in TTTE.
Hey Sam,
Ahh, I absoloutely love the King's. I would go as far and say that they are my favorite Standard Gauge loco. And also, I was wondering if you could review the Hornby J94?
Hey Tom, thanks a lot mate - I'd agree with you! Yeah sure - I'll try to get that done some time! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Have you ever heard GWR refered to as Gas Works Railway? Was nice to see a more colourful running season with a blue and red loco in a sea of green.
haha no never heard that - good name though! ;D
Glad you liked this anyway mate - I enjoyed running the different colours too! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The GWR locos always very nice!
I agree Marco - they always do! :D

Me too Connor - thanks a lot mate, really glad you liked it! Ooh that sounds awesome - enjoy the goodies! :D
Cheers,

Cool, Your very welcome Sam and yep did enjoyed it and thanks
Great video! I think I'd buy that one over the new one because that one looks pretty good and the new one is quite expensive. :)
That's fair enough mate! I do think this version has better value for money!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great loco Sam, especially in the BR Blue! Reminds me of King Edward II blasting up Goodrington Bank.
Thanks a lot mate - yeah I really like this one in the blue too!! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Good video as always Sam. Is the odd one out at 18:20? A Wrenn/Triang loco?
Thanks a lot Patrick - yeah I think so, if I remember right! Well spotted! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Actually, despite their size and handicaps, the Kings are widely considered to be among the best locomotives ever built by the GWR. They're my favourite.
Yeah absolutely - they were the largest and most powerful 4-6-0s in the UK I think!! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
What a great logo you should definitely test the king class is pulling power and what a great video this will be undoubtedly my next locomotive that I purchase which is saying a lot considering but so far I only have Thomas Locos

haha thanks so much mate - that's really lovely to hear! :D

Live that lovely loco!!!
haha absolutely!! :D
Look great in blue. I'm a little sick of seeing trains in BR green so this is a nice change.
haha I agree - this really was a nice change!! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
I really want to get a Hornby King in blue because that's my favorite color and also because I'll have my second Hornby King.
Ooh good idea Jacob - I think you'll really like them, they're stunning! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Very nice model. By any chance do you have access to the newer version to show the differences in detail?
Hey Scott, thanks a lot - yeah I have the BR green modern one, the differences are quite noticeable! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
haha they did indeed ;D
Great video and amazing loco
Thank you Lewis! :D
My collection consist of mainly EX GWR in british railways liveries and BR Standards
That sounds pretty good Thomas!! :D
I like your layout
Thank you! :D
As a GWR hut, I love it.
haha absolutely! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Amazing review Sam. But the front bogie looks a little weird. Isin't it?
Thank you! haha yeah -they had bearings on the outside, due to the size of the cylinders!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Love it
Me too mate! :D
love blue locos from steam era
Me too Michael! :D
1:40 LMAO I noticed that the end of the box said "Ass Locomotive" due to the sticker being half covered by the King Class Locomotive name. Now its an Ass Locomotive running number 2 from the SOAT which stands for sitting on a toilet. XD That is probably the funniest moment on your channel besides the G2A GTA naming.
haha I loved that too, lol!! Very well spotted, lol! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
You reviewing the king class as I personally think you're the king of hornby.
Awhh that's very kind of you to say - thanks so much!! :)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Now there is a really good engine only a few can pull of the color blue
Thanks Jay - I agree!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I much prefer pre-grouping engines. I like to see a Great Western crest on a Great Western engine. If it came in blue and with the GWR on it, I'd be happy :)
That's fair enough mate - I really like the pre-grouping stuff too!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
My GWR King Class is in BR green
Ooh lovely - that's the classic livery! :D

hey sam quick question your thoughts on modern king class locos they pull alot??
They're pretty strong yeah - mine manages a good few coaches! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Are you going to Review the new Hornby King in BR blue too?
haha if they come down in price, then sure! If not - I'll be sticking with the green one! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I also like to add that I have a feeling that somewhere in the uk a boy or girl might be into trains of the us as I'm in the UK.
Ooh yeah that's probably true!!! ;D
Iv seen that train it's also the train on my profile pic 😀 oh and I might get the model for Christmas
Ooh yeah you're right! Fantastic - I hope you do!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Gorgeous loco! The NRM owns the first one built and it’d be nice if they stop worrying about money and restore her! I rank these and the Castles as the most successful GWR engines!
Thanks a lot Ryno - it would be lovely if the NRM restored theirs!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Your welcome Sam! :D
Ryno :)
I doubt that it will ever run again, it would need to have the chimney, safety valve bonnet and cab height' cut down to fit under bridges on the mainline and without being on the mainline it's lost it's own largest source of revenue.
The cost of the necessary warning systems would be another added factor.
Its not a chimney, it's a funnel in the UK and smokestack in the US. Also the steam chest is a piston and the splashers are wheel arches
Mayo Hosko's Lego With Spider-Man and Elsa it is a chimney in the uk, the steam chest is cylinders, and they are called splashers...
Thanks for the comment Mayo - I hear them called chimneys all the time - I'm pretty sure that's an acceptable term!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I think it does use tender pickups
This one doesn't sadly - but later ones do!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Lovely loco for a lovely video
Thanks a lot Black Bird! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)

Can you do a remembrance Day special, with the fox transfers remembrance headboard and a ww1 loco and coaches
KOOTPGB
Ooh that would be cool! Sadly I've already sorted my videos for the next few months, but I'll try to do that for next year! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Btw Sam did you know that Bachman are releasing the Caledonian 812 aka for Thomas and friends fans Donald and Douglas
Yeah I did see that! It should be very exciting! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Fabulous loco. I have Hornby King George Vth with tender drive in blue. I paid £57 at Hattons 20 years ago. It is Top Link which was their super detail then. Could you review that please.
Ahh fantastic Philip - it sounds good to me - does that have the same body as this one, by any chance??
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Looks the same apart from the Baltimore Bell on the front.
How is the King these days?
I'm looking for an endurance runner who wants to get laps in.
This one isn't so good - dodgy motor - but the latest Hornby one is very good indeed! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The only other version is the really old tender drive models
Yeah for sure - I wonder if those had the same bodies though??
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Oh yeah sam have you ever heard brtanna class 7 locomotives no.70048 name as The territorial army 1908--1958
Hmmm, never heard of that particular one - sounds good though!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I got a king class brand new at a railway fair for £75 it is a limited edition model it is king George v number 6000 and the hornby r number is 3330 👍
Ooh nice one Harry - that sounds like a great bargain to me!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Cheers Sam thanks for the input I was surprise to find the gem of loco for a bargain price too
Reminds me of gorden, he's also blue
haha yeah!! Similar kind of size!! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Can you do a build review of a Dapol locomotive model and convert it to a working model
Ooh sounds good! I can definitely look into that! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Do they have a model of "King Edward ll" ?
They certainly have lots of the kings - so it's worth looking that one up! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Do you think Hornby should produce this old King class in the Railroad range.
That would be awesome - yes they should! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Ok so I’m not to sure, but I think the theme was Hornsby models, and the hogwarts express was a Bachman model, so I think the hogwarts express was the odd one out.
Ooh that's interesting - yes it was the Manor, the only Bachmann model!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I do prefer the older models to the new ones there motors I think are better and they have a longer lifespan in my opinion
That's fair enough Daniel - I agree, they do last longer!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Sam I need some help wiring my track. It would be great if you could get in touch or make a vid on it 👍👍
Hey Tobin, I can try to do that some time - in the mean time, there's lots online about doing that! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thank you so much for replying! 😊
Ahh. You must be talking about the 1940 Norton Fitzwarren rail crash when you were talking about the history about the Kings.
Yeah I think that was the one - did that one involve this engine??
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The Hornby king is great, but they have missed at out at least 3 liveries two of which are 2 BR green liveries, shame since it is such a great model
Is that so?? Have they not covered those with the later releases??
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I was wrong about the two later liveries the shirt button and the Hawksworth G crest W which had been covered as limited editions but I would love to have seen an early BR crest green and the green Loco with British Railways on the tender this sounds terrible since I am asking for too much lol
I got an ad from the CW the tv show is titans
Ooh really?? very cool! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
