I bought my Hornby Ivatt 2mt over 40 years ago. 46521. Ran it for a couple of years, stored it away for many years started running again as I took retirement and then after finding your servicing videos I decided to take the body off and service it up. Still runs like new. Thanks for your inspiration Sam and a very happy new year to you and your family.

Another outstanding review Sam! The Ivatt 4 was one of the last locos built by the LMS and it really holds a claim as one of the most successful 2-6-0 designs in the UK! It also held the privilege of being the last mainline 2-6-0 to ever run in service before the end of steam in 1968. Quite a history this class has!
I'm a Southern man by trade but I've often wanted to pick up one of these if I ever come across it. Your video just gave me an answer to my decision!!
46521 is an Ivatt class 2.. Based at Great central Railway The standard class 2 had a smaller cab and bigger chimney

The Ivatt 4’s are a firm favourite for me and a lot of local rail enthusiasts, because they were the back bone of East Anglian rail in the latter days, when most pre-grouping and pre-nationalisation locos were getting tired and life expired. I absolutely love them, they’re a great loco to work on, it’s a great shame that only one was preserved but at least we still get to see an Ivatt 4 at all ☺️

That's extremely fascinating! I had no idea the Ivatt 4s were regulars on the old GER Network. I know the B17s were pretty common along the GER Mainline too, yes?
I know they had a significant NER Network presence and they dominated the Stainmore Line near where it merged into the S&C at Kirkby Stephen. In fact KS East had only two J21s, and 1 N10 - but a whole complement of Ivatt 4s in the 50s!

I love the compact appearance and functionality is beauty to me, this loco was designed to run tender first as effectively as the normal direction, a really useful engine and a great model. Big tick ✅

My granddad had one of these! But sadly when he passed away half of his locos were given to me and half. I couldn't manage to bring her to my own layout. But I have many memories with this loco, and I am extremely tempted to get one. Thank you for an excellent video

You know, given the brilliant tender pickup and connection scheme Bachmann uses on a lot of their American prototype locos, even in N scale, there's no good reason these tenders cannot have all wheel pickup either. Hopefully they decide to add it sooner rather than later. Proper bronze bearings in the chassis would be a marked improvement too. I'd happily pay a bit more for those features on a loco.
I agree completely - there's no reason why not to add full pickups - especially given the already massive price tags of these models!

Agreed; Bachmann's split-post connection for their tender leads to amazing reliability. I have Kato 2-8-2 i've modified to run with a Bachmann VC16 tender (A big 12 wheel one) and with 10 wheels each side picking up track power, it never ever stalls. Making this tender live on the Ivatt would double the number of wheels collecting current, and is a change Bachmann should consider. Their Ivatt 2 tank has a live front truck, and that's a much larger engineering challenge than a live tender.

There is something rather satisfying about such a utilitarian looking locomotive, in much the same way that American second generation diesels are pig ugly but still somehow look great. I'm glad I bought a couple of Ivatts when Hattons were trying to shift unsold models several years ago. Back then you could pick one up brand new for £56. Its nice knowing that if I ever sold one or part exchanged I'd easily get more than I paid for it.
I agree with you on that! Blimey I wish we could buy Bachmann locos for those prices today - but sadly they won't allow retailers to do it :(

Hi Sam great review as always. I have the weathered version of this & I know they may seem ugly to some people but it has character in coal loads! Pulling a rake of private owner wagons it evokes those nostalgic distant days of the LMS. Love it!

They were only painted Unlined Black by the LMS (to my knowledge), so I find the BR Lined Black livery to be prettier on these locos. I can see why people think these are ugly, but I like them personally. As another commenter has mentioned "It looks so American...yet so British", and I completely agree with that statement, I find the charm is in the uniqueness of the class. Good review as ever, Sam, and I think you were quite fair with how you reviewed this model :)

#43160 was built at Doncaster Works on August 14th, 1952 and served British Railways until her withdrawl from service on January 10th, 1965. She was cut up at T.W. Ward Scrapyard on April 30th, 1965. Age 12.

The one preserved is on the seven valley railway running number 43106 in br black, I went to see it today, and I adore the engine, if I get one of these models I will be modifying the running number to that number

Hi Sam. This loco's no more ugly than you'd want in a freight loco - even better if it had been weathered! Wanted one of the LMS versions until you said the real loco appeared in the late 1940s - I want to model a bit of the 1930s West Coast main line so your helpful review has saved me some money! May get Bachmann's lined LMS Stannier 2-6-0 with painted backhead - also available Hattons and no doubt elsewhere. Cheers, man.

The only preserved Ivatt class 4 is 43106, it lives at the Severn valley railway and I'll be going there tomorrow and I might see the Ivatt class 4.
I have ridden behind it a couple of times though.

Hi Sam got one of thee in my collection and for got I had it one as when i bought it we moved house back to Mousehole Cornwall. Now I've just finished wiring up my layout i will give it a test run hope goes' as well as yours mate have oil it first been in the box since about 2012 i think its dcc .Great review again Sam thank you.

Oh yes! These are definitely one of my favorite Midland region designs, not sure why, probably because they remind me of late US 2-6-0s that have been dropped into the UK.

Yeah, replace the buffers with a cow catcher and give it some knuckle couplers, and you'd have an American engine!

I believe it took inspiration from some of the locos we shipped over to you Brits during the war.
Ivatts are growing on me. Especially his class 2s! Used to much prefer the earlier LMS locos but nowadays I'm fairly sure will end up with one of his on the layout somewhere

She is a very unique looking engine.
She reminds me of the logging 2-6-0s and 2-6-2s we have in the US.
I am fond of the gap between the boiler and drive wheels, since that is very common here in the US :)

I saw the Ivatt in BR Green down on the Swanage Railway a few months ago when the Flying Scotsman was visiting. Not that ugly an engine when you see it up close.

I have so many questions of how and why it looks so ugly so I will minimize it to 3.1,why is the running board so small I never knew it was there until now.2,why is there gaps between the steps on the sides of the smoke box and above the driving wheels.3,how are people going to use the steps on the running board.

The cab looks the same as the Swedish Staterailways steam loco class F 1200 it has a pointed smoke box door.
You can Google SJ Lit 1200. Lit is the same as your class on steam locos.
There a one F1200 class loco in a railway museum and its in very good runing condition.
And it pulls pass cars on special trains.
The F1200 is a beautiful loco, it is too bad that heljan has stoped making this loco.

Hey Sam do you have a problem with your hornby engines’ trucks because my hornby James’ the inner plastic keeps falling out of the metal band on the outside
Ahh sorry to hear that - yes I've had that issue with some of the Hornby thomas models - it should be possible to re-attach them and glue them in place, but if you're worried about doing it, contact Hornby and they should be able to help!

Hey Sam please can you tell me something about my train set I set up a junction it worked find until we put the peace that let's you use 1 controller and two engines on silent tracks and when I change the junction points my controller turns off and I have to unplug everything please respond. And tell me why this is happening and how to fix it😀
Without a picture of the track and equipment your taking about its almost impossible to diagnose from what you've said. But it sounds like its shorting out somewhere

Excellent review of the Ivatt class 4 Sam 👍😉 I personally like the BR Standard Class 4 more than the Ivatt Class 4 and my most favourite Ivatt loco that I like is Class 2 as they much niece in their appearance. Sam have you seen the Dapol LSWR B4 Class tank, think about getting one and which livery on these locomotive do you like?

I have both the ivatt class 2 and 4, although my class 4 has the double chimney which is what they had when first built. Have had them nearly 9 years and they have worked faultlessly!

Good review. I have purchased a few second hand Bachmann locomotives in the past and they aren't that bad in quality. Although I have had a new toy to play with from Christmas which Oxford Diecast which is the Janus 0-6-0 diesel in the striking bright blue BP livery.

Hi sam! Did you know that james from thomas is based on an irish engine? James is based on the D&SER K2 class mogul. Only one has been presrrved and its in the whitehead railway museum in northern ireland. She is currently RPSI no. 461. You should see if you can find a model of her and do another thomas and friends in real life video! I think it would be cool! (Even though i h8 thomas but i love anything thats irish cuz i am irish after all. 😁)

James is indeed a modified L&YR Class 28. Still, the resemblance to that Irish engine is uncanny. If only it was painted red!

Good level of detail in my opinion, looks very 'industrial'. I don't worry about painted cabs too much.

It’s a very nice model, though a not very attractive prototype. I much prefer the Ivatt 2s, got a few of the Bachmann variants, lovely things. I did notice that you made a small detailing mistake, or whoever owned the model before you made said mistake, that being that the back vacuum pipe is on the front and vice versa, see this quite a bit with the Ivatt models, people putting on the vacuum pipes back to front.

I seem to recall Bachmann making an LMS version in unlined black, think it was a couple of years ago now though.
And fun fact (this is a tad nerdy), but there is a difference between the Ivatt class 2 and the standard 2, using the first digit of the running number. The LMS locos were given the prefix number of '4' at nationalisation, whereas BR standard designs had the prefix number of '7'.

Why is the decoder in the tender better exactly?
It allows more space for the decoder of your choice, and also to fit sound if you want to. Having an electrical connection between loco and tender also allows tender pickups too! :D

A nice review, Sam. The Ivatt class 4 was a very good model, with a lot of character, and a very good performer for its type. Its curious that despite the old packaging, it is DCC ready and has a very convincing detailing (expect the unpainted cab, but its not a big problem) and there is an LMS black version of the loco. I don't consider that its ugly, it is strange looking because of being american style design, but is still atractive (and no, I don't think the stremlined Coronation is ugly neither). Anyways, hope you're having a nice day, and happy new year.

Why do most HO scale engine or pretty much any model train go smoother backwards than forwards? Is it a motor thing, or is there something else?

I love pretty much all off Henry & Gorge Ivatt's creations, my favorite would be the class 2 Tank, which is basicly a Tank engine version of the class 2.

How do I make steam train pilot wheels heavier
It's difficult - you're best to try to adjust it, many of them are sprung - you could add a stronger spring, or just carefully bend the metal to lower the wheels (caution!)

Thanks very much John! I use the Nikon D750, only one of them - I just repeat the process multiple times from different angles so I can cut things down, and produce a nice tidy video!

Only 3 Ivatt 4's were built under the LMS, and they carried the LMS 1945 'austerity' livery like that on your rebuilt Royal Scott. However the first 50 built all were fitted with double chimneys, but the double chimney wasn't that good so in 1951-54 all were rebuilt with the standard single chimney. As I dont think Bachmann do the early double stack version one of these in LMS livery wouldn't be correct. (although a good kit basher could probably convert one into the original LMS condition)
As for being ugly... well I prefer the term functional, they were built under wartime and post war austerity conditions so stuff like steel was in limited supply so anything that wasn't functional was left off. As a result, although they woud never win a beauty contest they certainly looked like they meant business!
And my favourate Ivatt loco is the Fell experimental diesel, a not very successful loco, but a distinctive design with an interesting history. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_10100

Is that green 2MT the Bachmann version or the older Hornby one? I have the Bachmann 2MT in LMS black and I adore it. It is the very locomotive that got me into the hobby - I'd love to see what you think of the Bachmann version in a review!

The motor on my one of these literally just burnt out after some ten years service XD God damn it Emeris!! (thats what I named it by the way). Do you know of any sites that have spare motors Sam?
Unfortunately Bachmann use proprietary motors in their models (I think) so you'd have to buy one from them - they charge around £20 for them I think, which is obviously quite insane!

Yes, Bachmann have done one of these models in LMS livery. Its product code was 32-575, and I believe it was released in 2005 as one of the first Ivatt 4mt releases.

Been a while Sam. So just saying there is a pure black LMS bachmann model of the Ivatt class 4. Though it does have next to no extra detailing, at east from the images that the site shows. I like the design of the Ivatt Class 2 better, but I wouldn't say this girl is ugly. The Q1 ain't exactly a looker, but that's not why the engines are fascinating are they now. So is there anything specific you are looking forward to in 2019 for both Hornby and Bachmann. Also a request, have you done a review on the WD Austerity Bachmann have made, it would be cool to see one. There was a Lord Nelson, Jubilee, N2, The black tender engine looked like a K1/3. Odd one out was probably the N2 since it was the only tank engine. Looking forward to the quality content this year in 2019
