  • Look How Big This Bridge Is! One Of The Biggest Railroad Bridges I Have Ever Filmed! Norfolk Southern Railroad Lift Bridge & Metal Deck Girder Over The Tennessee River & Next To Mile+ Long Dam And Bridge. 6 Trains Up High With Nickel Plate Heritage Locomotive & DPU In Chattanooga, Tennessee. One train stops on the 1920 bridge called the Tennbridge.
    Mixed freight trains, intermodal train, train with DPU, Nickel Plate Heritage Unit Locomotive & Chickamauga Dam with a 5,800 feet long automobile bridge. These bridges and dam are located in Chattanooga, Tennessee in Hamilton County. Hamilton County is the same county that the previous owner of the railroad bridge was located in. The previous owner was Cincinnati in Hamilton County, Ohio. Cincinnati recently sold the NS Rat Hole Line to Norfolk Southern who had been leasing the line. We see trains crossing the bridge from both sides. The bridge has 2 tracks.
    I rode to Chattanooga with Scott, @1960gambit. The Tennbridge was our first stop. When we first got here there were 2 trains passing over the bridge at the same time. We just missed them by minutes and had to wait a short time for the next train. The train that stopped had to wait before it could enter Debutts Yard. I will have more videos from Debutts Yard and Chattanooga. I will also have videos from Georgia. On Wednesday night my bottom plate in my mouth broke again. This is the second time that has happened. Has anyone on here every had the All On Four operation done? Anyway, other than that and the usual mouth pain, I had a good time in Tennessee.
    Don't miss the Live Action Pets and the slide show that comes from the video.
    Filmed Tuesday, August 6, 2024 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

    I camped at the Tennessee gorge just above Chattanooga on the ten River. You had to go into Chattanooga and then it's a 20 mile ride around behind it to get up there. Beautiful place. Way up in the hills, no cell service. Theres gaps in the rock when your hiking on the trails, only a foot wide or so. Just enough to get a foot stuck in, or fall into one and get wedged. You can see daylight in them gaps, like there's nothing but sky below you. Cuz there is. The ledge only 20 feet away.

    Brian, you were literally in my childhood backyard. I was born and raised about 5 miles north of where you were recording from. As a child in the late 1950s through the mid 1960s, my dad and I fished on both sides of the river downstream and upstream of Chickamauga Dam. I watched many a train cross that bridge.
    The huge ongoing project to lengthen the shipping locks has completely changed the site from what it was like when I was a child.
    Tenbridge was constructed more than 20 years before Chickamauga Dam and locks and the lift span was installed to permit river traffic to continue operating during times of high water when the river neared flood stage. If Chickamauga Dam and locks had been in place BEFORE Tenbridge was constructed, the lift span would probably not have been featured because the dam prevented the water downstream from reaching the point where river traffic couldn't pass under the bridge. I only saw the lift span raised 1 time and that time was only a scheduled test, never saw the span raised due to high water (as it was built for).

    Fantastic video! I always chuckle when I hear you mention the “rat hole line”. When I was growing up, we had Norway rats in our house. They tunneled through the walls and would chew their way out. You could hear them chewing. They were in the unfinished attic and had tunnels through the insulation. My Dad would let me trap them with steel traps. Later, Decon came on the scene. That stuff totally iradicated the rats. We used to see them waddling aroud the yard completely bloated until they died. My Mom used to call the room off the kitchen the “Rat Hole”.

    • @JawTooth
      @JawTooth  Před 28 dny

      Wow, I bet it stunk up there in the attic after they died unless you were able to get them out first. I had rats in my barn once when I kept grain there for my cows. Decon sure does do a good job lol. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      Keep in mind, that once outside, those rats could be eaten by hawks and eagles, which would then also die of that poison.
      I do understand your wanting to get rid of them, though.

      @kpete9219 Před 25 dny

      @@daytonlights-peterwine468 Today we have many more predatory birds than we had back then. Most people shot the birds because they had decimated the ruffed grouse, rabbits and other prey animals which were food for many families. The rats were a danger to everyone for various reasons. They were so prolific that traps couldn't keep up let alone make an indent in their populations. The cats seemed to know better than to mess with them. I don't know if they sensed they were sick or if their sixe was intimidating. This was back in the 1960's.

    I believe one of the boxcar mottos was Look South. Look Southern. Sadly the South gets overlooked a lot on the railroad scene. While this bridge doesn't have the unique design of High Bridge ot the sheer heavy duty look of Kenova this is a neat bridge for its day and does not look its age. A nice quiet place to sit and watch the trains and just The View of the large Bridge actually dwarfed by the Lock and Dam plus the high tension lines coming out of it for electric power just makes for a great combination. Too bad the lift doesn't work otherwise it would be like going to Burlington IA. Plenty of freight activity and some great lighting on their consists. JT has never met a bridge he doesn't like and enjoys sharing his findings with the viewers

    @jawtooth Okay, the horn salute was cool, but I thought the keying-the-radio-salute that happened right after the horn was extra cool! I've never heard that before!

    What an impressive bridge over the Tennessee River! Does the heron watch the trains go by? 😄

    It does still lift. they test it every once in a while. It's not regularly operable as in you can't request that them raise it, but they do still routinely exercise the bridge.
    Also owned by Cincinnati, but was operated and maintained by Norfolk Southern under contract. Now they own it as well.

    Now you're down by the old home. BTW, the dam, creek and battle are pronounced, "Chick-a-maw-ga." I fished sometimes where you're filming there at the dam. My cousin and I bought an old boat back in the day and below the dam there was the first place we put it in the water.
    The 2031 on that tanker tells me it's hauling nitric acid. I don't see a hydrochloric acid car behind it so no aqua regia today. Of course 1075 is our favorite LP Gas. Non-ordorized, of course.
    New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad Heritage Unit! The NYC&St.L. They had that paint scheme and letter font in the early 1960s. I don't even remember seeing that one before. How cool is that?
    JT, that is an awesome place to railfan. I have a feeling you'll be back one day. Thanks for taking us with you. I got to see some places I've been.
