    Hi Sam: I came across this and I know it is a historical review. The detailed explanation provided is extremely professional and the review of this model is very well done. I am now a confirmed Bristolian and have a railway library, which extols their performance as fast passenger locomotives on the S&DJR.
    Sam: Although Midland express engines, in the 1950’s they were down graded to secondary passenger duties and were particularly used as such on branch lines, as on the Gloucester Loop Line Barnt Green - Redditch - Evesham -Tewkesbury route, my family’s home. Shedded on the SDJ&R they were used as bankers at Evercreech and pilots from Bath Green Park to Bournemouth mainline. Note the size of the firebox and it will give you some idea of why in their prime they were regarded as 4P by the Midland Railway, the increasing size of carriages proved to be their nemisis. Well Done Excellent Review.

    Lovely loco there Sam. Looks like Bachmann have even managed to reproduce the prototypes pulling power. In the 1920's when the LNER excelerated the Flying Scotsman service to run non-stop from London to Edinburgh, the LMS started running the Royal Scott non-stop to Glasgow in response. They tried several ex-LNWR and L&Y designs on the service, but settled on double heaaded Compounds instead to haul the trains until the purpose built Royal Scott class locos were built. And you got to give credit to the loco crews who manned them on those runs, a smaller and more open cab than the A1/A3's and no corridor tender for a quick crew change either - if it was you who fired the train out of Euston, it would still be you firing it into Glasgow Central, and you would have fired over Shap and Beattock summits as well.
    Keep p the good work
    Jon

      Crews on the Scot were changed on the down leg at Carlisle. Only a very few trains ran non stop. My uncle was a fireman based at Crewe north and this was a regular run for him.

    I have just found the same loco as that in a dusty box but with a different body and NO motor so I dont think mine will be doing 113 miles like yours.

    I wish a model company would do a model of the Daily Mirror Midland Compound
    In 1959, the Daily Mirror chartered a special with their own locomotive, a Midland Compound due to be scrapped painted in a bright yellow and red livery
    However she was scrapped as soon as she was finished

      I've also been learning about my local railways and it turns out that a lot of the midland and later designs were used in Northern Ireland as the Northern Counties Committee, basically the same engines just regauged for Irish track but I have also noticed that they have a smokebox dart instead of the midland clamps which in my opinion ruins the look entirely haha.
      But of course these things were built for passenger and good hauling work, not for looks :P

    Hey Sam Yesterday I went to the Severn valley railway I've ridden behind (west county class) 34027 Taw valley up and down the line and today I went to Severn valley railway again but this time I stayed at Bewdley station which is between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth and I saw Taw valley coming into Bewdley station and it blew its whistle and its the best whistle I've ever heard. Also while I was there I saw their 14xx with an auto Coach. I've had a great time going to the Severn valley railway two days in a row. • @alanbrookes8716
    @alanbrookes8716 Před 3 lety

    You mentioned that the cylinders seemed so small. They're the right size, but the Hornby version is well over-sized, and it's one of the main faults of the Hornby loco.
    Note that this is an LMS-build locomotive. The Hornby one is a Midland-built locomotive, and the main way you can tell is that the LMS-built locomotives had a flattened dome cover, to keep within the LMS loading gauge, and slightly smaller wheels.
    They were never called the 1000 class, by the way. Bachmann created that name from the only member preserved, which happened to have the number 1000. When it was built it was a much different locomotive than what is preserved.

    The Midland Compound 4-4-0 was classified as a 4F probably either the BR period or LMS period. It was probably the strongest 4-4-0 at the time during the early 20th century.

    I’ve never really understood why you don’t fit the detail pack - do you sell your models, and to keep them in good condition you just don’t fit them? To me, fitting the detail pack is my favourite bit of the unboxing! Another thing - the reason for the tiny cylinders is probably to make space for the large compound cylinder. They were hefty things! These locomotives were known for getting a lot of slip, due to very little of their weight being above the driving wheels.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Před 5 lety

      Yeah I guess it's odd - I keep the models, I just prefer to keep them in original condition! Thanks a lot for the comment and the info - these certainly have interesting designs!

    Greetings from Canada, Hello Sam my friend, I'm enjoying my holiday.
    I most say, your Bachmann Midland Compound 4-4-0 Steam Loco is looking magnificent, very well detailed, great running performance and very strong too.
    I got a Bachmann Midland Compound too, the NRM version No.1000 in Midland Railway Maroon livery, I even tested her strength by pulling a long freight train, she wheel slips when she starts to pull the freight train, but she gets underway and finally moves them.
    The prototype No.1000 is preserved, apart of the National Railway Museum's Collection and located at Barrow Hill Roundhouse.
    I see 6 4-4-0 Steam Locomotives and the ones appear most in videos, are the LNER D16s I believe.

    Hi sam, I requested a service video specifically for this loco but in the meanwhile I managed to remove the body and check the motor. I then checked the cogs again.
    Before this, the loco at a slow speed would just jult and wouldnt start even if I applied lots of power and in the forward mode there seems to be quite a noisy sound. It doesnt sound to unhealthy though. In reverse its fine. Could it be the cogs inside.
    If in responding to this comment there is something you dont understand, ask cause its midnight and its kind of hard to explain as well ;D

      @SamsTrains  Před 5 lety

    Hi Sam,
    Thanks. Yet again, an excellently prepared, produced & enjoyable video (as we have come to expect from you) & also, what looks to be, a great little model, from Bachmann. Thank you so much for all the excellent work that you do, in sharing your joy & love of model railroading & most especially, the focus that you place, on encouraging youngsters, to become involved, with our wonderful hobby.
    Finally, can you do me a favour please & just compare your new Bachmann Compound to your Hornby models of the same locomotive. After you have looked carefully at them all, please could you tell me if you think that there appears to be any difference in the building scales, that have been used by the two manufacturers. There has been some commenting/criticism on the net, in recent days, claiming that Hornby OO Scale is in fact smaller, than Bachmann OO Scale? There are lots of historic reasons as to why I think that this might well be the case (over & above the obvious one, that either Hornby or Bachmann, have been sloppy about gauging issues & that one of them is/has, simply been getting their calculations wrong. However, at this point, I'm just trying to ask a simple question amongst those of you who are closest to making comparisons in locos & rolling stock, just to see if there may be some grain of truth, in what is now, just an internet rumour. I must say myself, that I've seen some examples of this myself & from what I've had placed in front of me, it does appear to be true (in those few cases, at least).
    Many thanks indeed,
    Andrew
