It literally took me so many fucking tries... I have never been a block/parry guy. I have always been a dodge roller. Really enjoying this game as well! Got it day 1, and it's been an absolute delight. Aggro Crab did a great job giving this game a strong identity that sets it apart from simply being just a soulslike. I've made it to the final area, (NO SPOILERS) and unfortunately, it does feel like the polish drops off hard in the second half of the game. Just want to note that they have been releasing hotfix patches almost constantly, but it'll take a little longer to get to console over PC, as far as I can tell from the discord.

I'm really liking this game, but I'd like to posit a concept to you all: Souls combat is just a deeper version of 3D Zelda combat. And honestly, this game feels more Zelda-esque to me, especially with my control bindings, and its lovely! I love soulslike combat in concept, but i always too sluggish and too much resource management to me. This game takes the concepts from the soulses that I like and makes it all more approachable to me. The soulslikes I've played are frustrating in the wrong ways to me, but even with difficult fights, the only thing that frustrates me are.... the softlocks. That first story boss Arlo mentions has a softlock, at least on Switch, that forced me to reopen the game probably 5 times before i beat her. Also switch version has some kinda rough performance issues so if you can play it elsewhere you should, but the switch version is good enough if its all you can play it on. Plus, they're supposedly gonna work on that, and its on gamepass so. Yeah.
Never played a souls-like before Another Crab's Treasure, so much fun. I don't know if I could get into the big names like Dark Souls or Elden Ring, but I loved the challenge and decision-making when it comes to what shell to equip for a boss, what upgrades to unlock first, etc. I finished the game last night, and man you can feel your own progression over time. Obviously your crab is levelled up and has a ton of abilities by the end of the game, but even then I still feel like I'm better at reading what kind of "slam" attack or "grab" attack is coming my way, how I should dodge, what to counter it with. I chose to play the game full vanilla with no changes to the difficulty in the settings, and man was it fun. I 100% get the hook of fighting a boss for what feels like hours before finally defeating them and the rush of adrenaline invigorates you and feels just so satisfying. There were times I struggled, especially in a later part of the game, but I never felt like anything was impossible, I just needed to take a step back, poke around and see when an enemy would attack and when I should go into my shell or dodge. Also, the platforming here feels so clean and makes me forget I'm playing something platforming-related. The late game has a lot more challenging or focused sequences, so t he platforming gets more difficult as well. I saw a lot of people say the game is pretty short, which was weird to me because the credits rolled at around 18 hours played, with only a bit of my time spent exploring the different locales. Maybe it's veterans blazing through? Regardless, I felt the length was just right for me and the story reached it's conclusion in what feels like a pretty satisfying way. I'm really excited to see what updates the team have, I hear they're working on a new game+ for the game, which would be great to playthrough it again (I probably will as soon as it drops).

I have truly tried playing games in the Souls series because of the compelling and skillful gameplay, but I just couldn’t because of how depressing the atmosphere. This is the game that has finally made me stick to it while brightening my mood. I hope for more of this!
One thing I wish was an option that the Gun was not a thing to used at any point in the game but only purchased for 200k in the shop Because anyone can spend a few hours popping off enemies to earn enough microplastics to get enough levels and virtually anything to eliminate virtually any challenge whatsoever
Upping the bitrate in OBS or whatever streaming software you use should make the footage look nicer. Keep in mind that if you're streaming on YT at 1080p60fps, the bitrate should be at the low end like 5000Kbps and at the high end 9000Kbps. Twitch has a hard cap at 6000Kbps if I'm not mistaken, but you seem to be streaming to CZcams lately so that's not super important. Hope that helps if you see this!
the one thing i love about this game is that it tricks you into thinking that it will defy the soulslike archetype in its narrative/worldbuilding, this is going to be a HAPPY soulslike, this isn't going to be one of those fictional universes where everything is all depressing, we are going to have fun helping this little hermit crab get his shell back! sike! it's significantly more dismal than the DS1 canon, because it's based on real life. the setting is earth, more specifically the ocean... our ocean. it's undergoing an apocalypse because some force beyond crab's recognition (humanity) is actively destroying it. crabs are infected and driven mad by gunk and microplastics, they lose their sentience and become hostile. this neverending wave of human waste is slowly infringing more and more into the oceanic ecosystem. the setting is not just some poetic cycle of life and death, light and dark, the fading of the flame. _ this is their apocalypse. _ it is WAY more morbid than the world of dark souls, and it's shucking real, and i hate it, and i love it. also, later in the game, the platforming does get significantly more challenging, interesting, and dynamic. so much so that I've started calling this game a "soulslike puzzle-platformer", basically combat that's a mix of DS1, hollow knight, and lies of P, with level design that is the perfect mixture of a DS1 style "3D metroidvania" world crossed with those PS1/N64 era puzzle-platformers like crash, banjo, spyro, DK64, etc. it pays a beautiful homage to not only the soulslike genre, but also the early 2000s puzzle platformers from our childhoods that we all know and love ("we" in this case meaning millennials) also for those curious about the combat: there is no stamina bar, there is no consequences for spamming dodge or parry, everything is based on commitment, rhythm, and frame advantage. i think it 100% works and the game is better for it. stamina management probably would've weighed it down, and without it you can just get fully immersed in the rhythm of the combat. the parry window is pretty tight, it's like smash ultimate's powershield where you have to shield and then parry on release. you do some poise damage, if they're not in a combo then you can momentarily stun them and get a frame advantage, and you can unlock a riposte via the skill tree. it also has the sekiro / lies of P thing where you build up their "balance meter" (poise-break) by landing hits and parrying them, and then once it's full you can hit them with a charged attack to "capsize" (knock them on their back and out of their shell if they have one). you can unlock a critical hit on capsized opponents via the skill tree (which needs to be heavily buffed, or the hammer charged attack needs to be nerfed, preferably both, because charging a hammer swing is like 5x more damage than critting a capsized opponent)
Heard of this game but didn't feel the need to check it out. But seeing the footage and Arlo's take on the writing, I'm definitely getting it...when I have more money lol
I am that person who always thought I might be into Soulslikes, and Another Crab's Treasure has proven to be a great gateway into the genre. I went in expecting a cute little game about crabs in a genre that I thought could potentially be interesting to me, I came out the other end fully Soulspilled, planning to play Elden Ring after I'm done with the TTYD remake, -and incredibly depressed about pollution and capitalism.-
I just beat the royal shellsplitter without a shell. Freakin heck that was intense 😂😂 That fight is a bit more straightforward tho. Blue and red attacks are SUPER telegraphed.
I am super interested in the game! I think it may be the game to get properly try soulslike games I think this would be a great starting point for me personally as I love the vibe and style sm! Also yes I love the characters and the story is neat, so far love what I have seen of this game from the stream!
I wonder what Arlo would think of another colorful and imaginative part-Souls-like game from 2023 by name of Clash: Artifacts of Chaos. Title sounds simple and boring, but to those familiar with the Zeno Clash games: there's a lot m ore to what Zenozoik has to offer, still with bizarre freakish creatures as the main inhabitants of a colorful fantasy-prehistoric world where neither written word nor coin exist yet. Great atmosphere and beautiful music too.
I decided to pick up Another Crab's Treasure after watching Arlo's stream. Overall I'm DEFINITELY having fun with it so far, but I have a few critiques. I'm playing on Switch, so maybe that has something to do with it but I've had more than a few instances of the game outright stuttering on me, especially when transitioning to a new "area". Music is also kinda inconsistent and doesn't seem to play properly all the time. Again, I'm having fun, but it could've used a bit more polish IMO.
My story with Dark Souls is I played Dark Souls 1(like 12 years ago), got stuck on the Asylum Demon for 30 minutes and then put it away and never tried again
I'm playing on Xbox since it's on Game Pass and overall I'm enjoying it. when the game is good it's a really enjoyable, albeit challenging adventure. but things can get real bad with the camera, especially in tight spaces, or certain platforming elements it can be downright frustrating. it's one thing to die a lot because of a tough boss or getting ganged up by a bunch of enemies, but it's another when it's because of poor camera system or imprecise platforming. but I really enjoy the shell/armor system, less involved progression, and story/humor, as well as the art style.
I’ve played about 3 hours and I love it so far but it’s a mess on switch, sooo many bugs and frame dips and just performance issues. I’m going to take a break and come back to it once it’s patched up properly.
I don't normally like soulslike games, but this is already my third favorite game ever. (The other 2 being hollow knight and ToTK). It's so charming for a souls like
I discovered another crabs treasure when the developers put out a "depression mode" and I was really bummed out to see that the game was a souls like, as I've attempted several, including Dark souls 3, Demon Souls, and Elden Ring, but never made it anywhere due to the extreme unforgiving nature, but maybe I'll try another crabs treasure when I get some extra cash
I’m loving this game so far, it’s a great challenge and definitely scratches that souls like itch for a switch owner. Unfortunately but also predictably, performance is RUFF on switch. My game was running like 2 fps in the unfathom level, but i downloaded the patch, and that seems to have helped.
This game to me feels like psyconaughts humor mixed with spulslike combat, in a mascot platformer shell. I love it, and so far.my favorite thing is the magic stat is umami with the short hand if MSG 😂
This is my first (3D) souls like. I've played Hollow Knight before, and that was solid. This game feels very solid so far aswell, haha. I'm enjoying trying to learn the bosses and stuff. The music is also a bop especially when it comes to the bosses. I still got floored by the first couple bosses I came into contact with, but I'm improving a bit.
There's for sure something here. I've never played a souls game but I love the way this game looks. Might give it a try down the line. I can't justify getting it now while little kitty big city, animal well and thousand year door are coming out in the next few weeks
So I've really been enjoying the game so far, But I really wouldn't recommend the switch version. I wanted something portable so I figured I'd get the version for switch, but the Fidelity was SO low that I really couldn't get past it. When I entered the castle, the resolution and frame rate got so low that I could barely even make out what was on my screen. After getting the steam deck version I can confirm it's much more consistent and stable.
The Star Wars: Jedi games are inspired pretty heavily by the souls games I think, but they lean a lot into the metroidvania aspect of the genre as well
Yeah I am LOVING this game so far, though I am a little perturbed to hear that you are "4 hours into the game" when the footage shows that you're about at the point where I am, and. I have spent about Seven Hours getting to this point. This is gonna take a while for me, isn't it? lmao
Imagine if Nintendo ever made a new Soulslike IP, I imagine it'd be kinda similar to Another Crab's Treasure. Watch it have the darkest lore ever for no reason other than yes just like Kirby lol.
I was really excited for this game. To me it was Dark Souls meets SpongeBob Battle for Bikini Bottom. Unfortunately I got it on the switch and have been having a really bad time so far. The framerate during the first boss fight was awful I could not read any of his moves and react. Which to me is the most important part of a soulslike. Hopefully I can get it on PS5 soon but it’s a major bummer right now
My only issue with the game, at least the Xbox version, is that the game will freeze in the middle of platforming sections while trying to load the next area. It feels like these loading zones are only in the places that are a complete detriment to the player when it happens, and I hope it gets patched.
There’s a lot to love about the game, but I’m having problems with it on switch. The lag is horrendous at points, worse than any game I’ve ever played. This is because it’s loading in massive areas, but there’s not loading screens. The game just comes to a screeching halt for a good 20 seconds. Then there’s the bugs. Getting stuck in walls happens too frequently (thank goodness for the die instantly option) and even the mantis shrimp boss randomly died twice during my attempts to beat it fair. There’s a lot to love, but it could’ve used some more time in the oven
I'm not interested in Soulslike games (even Hollow Knight was probably the most frustrating game experience I've ever had, and that's without trying a single Godhome fight), and I don't know if I'll play this, but your review definitely makes me consider it, it looks and sounds pretty good.
I just 100%'d this game. Loved it. Once the tech issues are worked out this is going to be a phenomenal game. As it stands unfortunately the jank takes away from the experience, especially late game
It's the easiest to beat Soulslike i've played, but got my platinum a few days ago. I can easily say that it's a strong contender for best indie of the year.
I got it on switch, and while it is a very great game, the game does have a very bad time in some spots with frame rate, and I’ve had to let go of my controller because of the slideshow to wait for it to stop.
I don't like souls likes… But I love this game :) maybe it's the simplifying of traditionally complicated elements, or adding in the 3D platforming, or having the super novel system of how shells/armor works, but I am having such a blast and highly recommend this game to anyone!
I've played a lot of Monster Hunter, so the mechanics of Dark Souls always interested me. Unfortunately, I really dislike fantasy. This seems perfect for me.
I saw your stream of this and decided to pick it up on switch. That was a terrible mistake. It is a huge visual downgrade on switch and has terrible slowdown.
Okay upon some reflection I don't think it quite took "a couple dozen" tries to beat the first big boss LOL but it did take a good handful
How dare you speak less than 100% accurately when off script
So, we talkin more 8 to 15 then?
A couple dozen always reads to me as like "15 - 20" even though it means way way more so, understandable lmao
It literally took me so many fucking tries... NOW some of them I literally walked in. got hit immediately, or poisoned or whatever, and just let her kill me to keep the specific shell I had. so it would respawn with full shielding. so it did take me about that many. the one thing i love about this game is that it tricks you into thinking that it will defy the soulslike archetype in its narrative/worldbuilding, this is going to be a HAPPY soulslike, this isn't going to be one of those fictional universes where everything is all depressing, we are going to have fun helping this little hermit crab get his shell back!
sike! it's significantly more dismal than the DS1 canon, because it's based on real life.
the setting is earth, more specifically the ocean... our ocean.
it's undergoing an apocalypse because some force beyond crab's recognition (humanity) is actively destroying it.
crabs are infected and driven mad by gunk and microplastics, they lose their sentience and become hostile.
this neverending wave of human waste is slowly infringing more and more into the oceanic ecosystem.
the setting is not just some poetic cycle of life and death, light and dark, the fading of the flame.
_ this is their apocalypse. _
it is WAY more morbid than the world of dark souls, and it's shucking real, and i hate it, and i love it.
also, later in the game, the platforming does get significantly more challenging, interesting, and dynamic.
so much so that I've started calling this game a "soulslike puzzle-platformer", basically combat that's a mix of DS1, hollow knight, and lies of P, with level design that is the perfect mixture of a DS1 style "3D metroidvania" world crossed with those PS1/N64 era puzzle-platformers like crash, banjo, spyro, DK64, etc.
it pays a beautiful homage to not only the soulslike genre, but also the early 2000s puzzle platformers from our childhoods that we all know and love ("we" in this case meaning millennials)
also for those curious about the combat: there is no stamina bar, there is no consequences for spamming dodge or parry, everything is based on commitment, rhythm, and frame advantage.
i think it 100% works and the game is better for it.
stamina management probably would've weighed it down, and without it you can just get fully immersed in the rhythm of the combat.
the parry window is pretty tight, it's like smash ultimate's powershield where you have to shield and then parry on release.
you do some poise damage, if they're not in a combo then you can momentarily stun them and get a frame advantage, and you can unlock a riposte via the skill tree.
it also has the sekiro / lies of P thing where you build up their "balance meter" (poise-break) by landing hits and parrying them, and then once it's full you can hit them with a charged attack to "capsize" (knock them on their back and out of their shell if they have one).
you can unlock a critical hit on capsized opponents via the skill tree (which needs to be heavily buffed, or the hammer charged attack needs to be nerfed, preferably both, because charging a hammer swing is like 5x more damage than critting a capsized opponent)
This game definitely looks interesting. Not on my radar quite yet, but I’m definitely gonna keep it in mind.
WHOA new channel! I must have missed the memo
This is my first soul-like game and i absolutely love it
Loving this game, it's so refreshing to see a soul's like with accessibility options
I went in expecting a cute little game about crabs in a genre that I thought could potentially be interesting to me, I came out the other end fully Soulspilled, planning to play Elden Ring after I'm done with the TTYD remake, -and incredibly depressed about pollution and capitalism.-
Looks cool!
Have you scanned the QR in the main down underground?
I just beat the royal shellsplitter without a shell. Freakin heck that was intense 😂😂
That fight is a bit more straightforward tho.
I've beaten the game and it just keeps getting better and better.
The first clip of this game I saw had an enemy that fights you with a guillotine
(Chanting) Crab Game Crab Game Crab GAME CRAB GAME
There's a lot of jankiness in the physics but oh my god this game is amazing and i love it so much
im so hyped for the next another crab stream
I commented on your last main channel video about this game that you should try this out; I am glad you checked it out!
I just finished this game and I really did adore it
I wonder what Arlo would think of another colorful and imaginative part-Souls-like game from 2023 by name of Clash: Artifacts of Chaos.
Title sounds simple and boring, but to those familiar with the Zeno Clash games: there's a lot m ore to what Zenozoik has to offer, still with bizarre freakish creatures as the main inhabitants of a colorful fantasy-prehistoric world where neither written word nor coin exist yet.
Great atmosphere and beautiful music too.
i love this game so much. crazy how indie developers are doing 10000% better than the big companies
Mr. Krabs sure has a hardcore relative.
Keep streaming it if you can ❤
I’ve played about 3 hours and I love it so far but it’s a mess on switch, sooo many bugs and frame dips and just performance issues.
I've never played a soulslike, and I don't know why exactly, but this is the one that I want to go in on.
I’m loving this game so far, it’s a great challenge and definitely scratches that souls like itch for a switch owner. Unfortunately but also predictably, performance is RUFF on switch. My game was running like 2 fps in the unfathom level, but i downloaded the patch, and that seems to have helped.
this games dungeons and mechanics feel similar to windwaker and i love it
Just jumping on the “loving this channel” bandwagon! Thanks for doing it! Hope it’s very mutually beneficial 😅
My favorite accessibility option (per DreamcastGuy): Give Krill a Gun. Excited as always to hear about great games.
Local hermit crab goes on krilling spree, more at 11.
This is literally the dark souls of crabs
This game to me feels like psyconaughts humor mixed with spulslike combat, in a mascot platformer shell.
I love it, and so far.my favorite thing is the magic stat is umami with the short hand if MSG 😂
I just got done 100%ing this game, such a good time!
6:34 Is that a Hollow Knight reference?
This is my first (3D) souls like. I've played Hollow Knight before, and that was solid. This game feels very solid so far aswell, haha. I'm enjoying trying to learn the bosses and stuff. The music is also a bop especially when it comes to the bosses. I still got floored by the first couple bosses I came into contact with, but I'm improving a bit.
There's for sure something here. I've never played a souls game but I love the way this game looks. Might give it a try down the line. I can't justify getting it now while little kitty big city, animal well and thousand year door are coming out in the next few weeks
Crab soul is definitely an interesting looking game
Dark Shoals
Game is fire no doubt
Bro this title... you're krillin me
So I've really been enjoying the game so far, But I really wouldn't recommend the switch version.
The Star Wars: Jedi games are inspired pretty heavily by the souls games I think, but they lean a lot into the metroidvania aspect of the genre as well
Yeah I am LOVING this game so far, though I am a little perturbed to hear that you are "4 hours into the game" when the footage shows that you're about at the point where I am,
and. I have spent about Seven Hours getting to this point.
This is gonna take a while for me, isn't it? lmao
i really wanna get this game but I still gotta finish elden ring
Just spend a few hours fighting the giant crab, crayfish, and octopus enemies while squinting a little.
Unless you count Hollow Knight, this is my first Souls-like and it has me hooked. I'm really enjoying picking it up once every couple of days.
I think the game is really great, and I've never played a souls game before, but I really regret getting the switch version
Imagine if Nintendo ever made a new Soulslike IP, I imagine it'd be kinda similar to Another Crab's Treasure.
Watch it have the darkest lore ever for no reason other than yes just like Kirby lol.
As someone who has never gone into any SoulsLike game genre this is the only souls game that I’ve completed 100%
I love this game. My wife gets mad when I play it for a while. I'm stuck halfway through the 2nd boss fight.
Kinda like psychonauts is written
Game of the Year
There have been a couple of bosses that gave me some real trouble. I'll just say chopsticks, especially.
Loving this game. Runs like ass on switch on launch, but I'm sure it'll get better.
i dont like soulslike games but loved this
It's the easiest to beat Soulslike i've played, but got my platinum a few days ago.
Hello
I've played a lot of Monster Hunter, so the mechanics of Dark Souls always interested me. Unfortunately, I really dislike fantasy. This seems perfect for me.
I saw your stream of this and decided to pick it up on switch. That was a terrible mistake. It is a huge visual downgrade on switch and has terrible slowdown.
I hope there will be updates for switch so it'll work well and smoothly. It seems like a cool game to grab and play a few rounds.
lots of accidental ocean puns in this video, "theres an adult undercurrent," "maybe this game will hook you," etc etc
