Fun fact: topoda is actually a peacock mantis shrimp, a crustacean infamous for having one of the strongest punches in the animal kingdom. The mantis shrimp preys on clams and other prey along the seabed, and will use its extremely strong frontal claws to punch through tough clam shells, disorient fish before feeding, and deter predators. Their colorful shells serve as a warning to predators, in a similar way that some butterflies and frogs have bright colors to warn predators. The males are known to be more vibrant than the more red females in order to attract mates, and it’s not uncommon for two males to compete for a mate by boxing, often leading to the death of one or both of the males

This game was such a pleasant surprise. Super expressive, great sense of humor, really creative and fun skills for both exploration and combat. There is definitely a fair bit of clunk and jank throughout the game, but it remains such a delight to play

    • @BillySYT
      @BillySYT  Před 22 dny +11

It's a little janky, but that's just what happens with Indies so I'm way more lenient about it - I appreciate the "Kill yourself Immediately" button in the settings. Saved me from a few glitches. Honestly, I'm impressed at how well it ran for the most part.

    • @jurtheorc8117
      @jurtheorc8117 Před 13 dny

Another Crab's Treasure, can shake hands, or at least weird hand and crab claw, with another semi-Soulslike from 2023 on those fronts of creativity, expressiveness and combat, one by name of Clash: Artifacts of Chaos. It's not as strong or daring on the exploration/traversal front, but does have amazing music and atmosphere.
Plus a very unique setting and art style. Inhabitants look like they could be designed by Stan Winston Studios for a Dark Crystal-type movie-- wonderfully ugly in a world that barely has organized culture, yet has a lot of color, beauty, some funny parts and melancholy amidst all the punching-the-snot-out-of-each-other with different findable Martial Arts styles of the world.
Greatly recommend looking up the game, or at least check out the soundtrack. Two of the earliest tracks, The Boy Calls and Pseudo's Theme, are already super strong to set the tone of the rest of the game.

Now I am too overpowered to enjoy the optional bosses behind the purple bricks, and I got to clean up all the collectibles I missed. Also, an endurance build with a valve shell means you can block mostly everything aside from red aggro attacks (you can even block blue aggro attacks sometimes), combine this with the Isopod stowaway (or two if you can find them), and you can zoom around the battlefield blocking everything

Petroch is the game's mimic. :D
Topoda is my favourite. :) He's the one that got me really playing with defensive options. Parrying isn't my forte, so against his big swings I'd use the backstep-counterattack combo. Turned out to work really well. When he threw his flurries at me, I just shelled up in my thimble with Fortify.
On a related note, Fortify was bugged when I faced Heikea. The invulnerability did not end after three hits, allowing me to block indefinitely. I thought something was weird during the fight, but only realised what was happening when I beat him. Also, assuming a Japanese pronunciation, Heikea is probably pronounced Hey-keh-ah.
With Firth, I strangely didn't have a big problem fighting him. Did it on the first try. Tactical Tentacle was my friend. :)

A neat bit about the Praya Dubia fight: Friendly fire is turned on. You can make Praya attack their minions, and even themselves in the second phase.
A neat bit about restoring shell health: you can overheal, just a bit. Once you've unlocked it, if you have healable shell health, but your attack does enough damage that the health you would gain is bigger than whatever healable shell health you have, you heal for the damage the attack does, not just what's supposed to be healable. So if you have a shell that's really damaged that you want to keep, you can grind and heal it back to full. You take a weak attack that just barely damages your shell, then hit them with a big attack to heal more than the healable bar. Then you just repeat until either the enemy is dead or your shell's back at 100. I mostly noticed it happening with hammer attacks.

Probably my favorite aspect of Pagurus's boss fight is that other enemies can get mixed up in the fight depending on where you are. In particular, Pagurus is able to grab other enemies and eat them, which gives a very large window to go in and deal a solid chunk of damage while he's preoccupied. The fight as a whole I feel is super fun and intense to go through, and his ability to grab enemies was an added layer that enabled me to beat him on my second try straight out of Flotsam Vale with no Adaptation upgrades. Really cool fight, easily in my top 3

An Angler fish that uses status effects like fear or even an opposite to attract you close, an octopus that uses several tools unlike Inkerton only using two, a Pom pom crab that cheers on its minions while wielding gunk filled anemones, the possibilities are endless

You're fighting a boss, which has endured all of the oceans pain, fury, and suffering, and this boss is tearing itself apart in an attempt to inflict some suffering on you. the music is amazing, it sounds as if you can truly feel dubia wailing. it still gives me chills every time i hear it.
Also, voltai may be a pushover of a boss, and yet her theme fits her so perfectly. its like you can hear the electricity coursing through the track itself.
    this game is a masterpiece.

Inkerton's actual battle was DEFINITELY my favorite fight.
I think I can honestly say that his fight was where I found my stride with successful parrying. Granted, it still took me a good amount of time to defeat him, the quick and snappy pace of the fight really helped me, and will help me loads with future playthroughs of the game.

In the Praya Dubia second fight, you can also exploit the friendly fire of their attacks to deal extra damage to the boss the same way those same attacks can deal damage to the crab enemies in the first phase. You need to stay close to the boss constantly tho so it's very "high risk, high reward".

Sadly I agree with Voltai’s fight being ranked last. I didn’t even know she had a last phase with poison because I killed her during the toast phase. A disappointing boss do nerf rubber band
Nephro: I don’t play many souls likes and would say I’m not crazy good but my god I fucking loved nephros grab attack, I decided to forgo any other stats for pure strength so it was a one shot move on my minimal health bar and I loved the challenge. Running as a glass cannon it felt like most fights had to be done perfectly with no room for flubbing cause every grab attack and most others were one shot moves. I recommend this for those who want a challenge and are patient.
Ceviche: first try but a fun little boss fight to end off the unique dungeon.
Camstcha: OH MY GOD! This has to be my favorite fight. I used like no adaptations or abilities so it was just a brawl. Took me almost an hour to beat him, first attempt I almost killed him and died to his grab. Then spent 40 minutes struggling. Best 40 minutes of the game thus far. And the last 20 minutes was just improvement on my playstyle and I felt so good when I finally took him down.
Roland: Trash boss in my opinion, boring fight for me, had zero interesting movement in my play through and was looking forward to a unique pinball related fight. Killed him in like three charged attacks. No death, probably 2nd worst fight for me.
Shellspliter: I insisted upon beating this boss when I started the game. Loved the fight amazing grab attack and a nice half-hour of attempts leaving me with a good knowledge of the controls.
Magista: totally didn’t expect to fight her, and was shocked at the fall of slacktide and the gunk. It gave me the impression of what the story was about and a great impression of the game to come. Took me a nice 4-5 attempts and was a pretty fun fight. Sadly didn’t see a lot of her attacks from quick deaths on first fights and then after getting used to it I pretty quickly smashed her.
Oceans agony: mmmm kinda mid, awesome story based boss. I loved the theme, design and all that. But the actual fight was kinda boring. 2 attempts, I instantly end phase one and two with my current 105 stat strength. And I shielded the last part and it killed itself cause ya know my res stat was pumped too. I enjoyed the story and lore but the fight itself was mid.
Pagurus: I was very stubborn at the time and wanted him dead. Such a fun fight, absolutely a horrifying boss fight. Took me almost 2 hours to kill him. I assumed the same that he wasn’t meant to be fought. But I’m so glad I did.
Heikiea: YES! An amazing fight, a slow methodical fight which challenged and pushed me. It took maybe 20-30 minutes and I felt like I learned the fight really well by the end of it. Loved this fight, and when I got to halfway through his healthbar I did not expect him to start dual wielding. Awesome fight one of the best.
Petroch: by this point in the game I was just too strong for such a weak boss, surprising and cool ideas, but eh it was alright.
Inkerton: sick idea for a fight. Took 2 attempts though. Also I clipped out of the barrier and just kinda left. Only came back later cause I learned he dropped a stainless relic.
Firth: really cool first boss and I love the story part of it. Spoke to the message of the story of people trying to do good and screwing people over. Boss was good, not exceptional and super laggy for my weak laptop. But much like many other bosses he stood no chance. First try with the dark souls helmet shell and I say again 105 strength!! But a good boss nonetheless.
Groverkeeper Topeda: I loved the build up to this fight. A really cool boss at the end of a full exploration of a level. But… I don’t know he felt a little too easy. Given I ignored the shell abilities for my first playthrough he felt kinda boring. I wanted him to be a little more relentless, hit harder. And maybe have a one shot move. After my first attempt losing I expected him to be really hard but he only took one more attempt after that. I just felt like I wanted more from him.
All these criticisms is not to say I didn’t love the game, I just didn’t challenge myself enough. These bosses largely are unique and super fun.

I know they get repetitive, but they all felt more interesting and fun to me than that fight. Glad Petroch got appreciation. I felt like that was a boss that forced me to think more too. Even if it’s primarily the hermit crab moveset. My top 5 would probably be Nephro (loved the Gyoubu reference, enjoyed the moveset), Topoda (I had a lot of bugs in his fight but also thought it was cool), Duchess (great character, great va, fun moveset), Firth (cinematic final boss), and Petroch!

When he goes for a grab attack, instead of impaling you onto the fork he instead takes the banana peel right off your back and does the whole animation for the attack on it, it then does over half his health (60% - 65% give or take) So theoretically if you get shell insurance for the banana peel, Die so you get a second shell (peel) (if it doesn't break), and fight around it, he could kill himself without you doing a single thing to him
