- This common problems list is based on my experience in the field.
Buying a used truck in many cases is better than buy a new truck.
No all buyer are going to face this PROBLEMS that I mentioned on this video.
If you want to buy insurance/warranty for your truck, make sure to read the contract before signing it. So you can understand all the policy that the insurance warranty company is offering you.

I made all those mistakes he pointed out. Listen to him he’s right.
Were you able to overcome it and stay in business?
I bought a 2015 cascadia with dt12 and dd15 at 300k miles and ew4 factory warranty. It's now over 500k and I've done nothing but preventive maintenance to it, except some few 10$ air leaks and overhead. No oil, air or coolant leaks. Get 7.4 average at 65 mph, 77000-79000lbs driving north west mountains. Unless you're buying a new truck, it's important you learn as much as you can about your truck and do some work on it. Maintenance is the key in my opinion.
What kind of preventive maintenance you do on it ?
@@gurpalsingh3695
Regular oil change with synthetic oil every 20000 miles. I use shell rotella t6 full synth 15w40 ( not 5w40, they have both). Use to be able to get it Walmart for 20 bucks per g, now 22.99 is the cheapest in Advance auto parts.
Coolant filter once a year
EGR valve cleaning at 550k( easy access on this year model, 2 clamps and it's off)
Delta P sensors cleaning with small 360 brushes every 6 months or replacement every 500k (about a 100 bucks),
7th injector cleaning once a year
DEF filter ( not DPF) replacement once a year
DEF doser injector cleaned at 500k, next time at 700k
DPF Cleaning at 500k. All I remember at the moment
@Jay Turan 780k as of now. Replaced air compressor, turbo, exhaust manifold gasket, clutch and push bearing, oil pump rings and suction manifold done by dealer for free as part of a recall, lower end bearings. Other than that runs as strong as before, good oil analysis, veeery little oil consumption between oil changes.
You got lucky
@@nathanharrison816 Hahahahaha....the long lost explanation
Rule #1 that I learned the hard way. Absolutely never, ever trust anyone that makes their living from selling used equipment. I don’t care how stellar of a reputation they have. If you cannot take that piece of equipment to an independent mechanic and pay him to look it over from top to bottom then you are rolling the dice and the house always wins with as-is no warranty equipment.
You are a Godsend to the trucking community brother.
This guy is speaking the truth
Great video! Just what I needed right now. Thank you
This guy he’s talking at the bottom of the heart
Thank you very much for these great tips.
Thank you for the information about different engines, really helps. You answered my questions!! Excellent advice!!
Hi Francisco your video always the best man. Can't wait until you have a bigger shop I want to bring my truck to you
Thank you for your professionalism
I enjoy your videos.I wish your shop was close to me.
Thank you sir. Learning so much from your video. 😊
muchas gracias amigo yo estoy por comprar un camion y este video me a ayudado mucho a decidir que camion compara
Really good guy giving us good advice, thanks again brother
Keep it up
Very good advice that happened to me i bought from a dealer and after a month i had problems on the road
Other things l do: check the windshield isn't leaking water, fuel gauge is working, seats air like supposed to, it can take a while to just look at one truck. Put your hands on everything you can to make sure it isnt cracked bent broken or loose and so on. Good videos, I'm looking at a Freightliner Cascadia with an isx 2014 with 500k on it. Eaton 10 sp auto.
I like dd15 better, easy to find parts for it, just pay attention to any little problem.
#1 mistake- not having capital.
I worked in the oil & gas industry for 3 yrs hauling REd diesel fuel to Frac’s and oil rigs. Almost all the time I drove cascadia DD 15 engines. And let me tell you those trucks go through hell on those roads and they are tough.! They just keep going. Yes they might have steering gear box leaks, radiator leaks small problems but considering how shitty the roads are there good durable trucks.....that’s my two cents oh and I’m looking into buy myself one right now. Thanks Amaya for the info great video Amigo.! 👍😎
Great advice. Thanks again.
Always good info Francisco...i bought a frieghtliner cacadia dd13and 13 speed.i had them take out the ten speed...
Thank you Francisco.
Thanks for always helping us.
My boss owns a 2014 frieghtliner cascadia with a DD15 engine, I am a driver and I work on his truck if it is a problem that doesn't require specialized tools and equipment, that's how easy I'm finding it to work on, and parts are cheap especially aftermarket parts.
Thanks
Wouldn’t suggest using aftermarket parts. Or even used parts. Learned the hard way,
Excellent man your Awesome Thanks
Good advice and info thanks!!!
Thank you Francisco , listening from carb restricted California . As all big diesels must now have 2010 & up def engines . DD15 Cascadia converted to super dump is probably the route 4 me . The shop had 1 with ISX Cummins but I already thought Detroit would be better & you confirmed it . Your video's are much appreciated .
Bro you are helping people out here, I would go after all the inspection done by the good mechanic I would bring the truck to the good shop for get the alignment and tires balance done even buying a new one!!
Thank you for doing what you do.
Gracias por muy informativo y buen video Paco.
Thank you brother!👍
Informative video thank you!!!
Great Vid Francisco 🙂👍
Thank you so much very helpful
Good tips. Thank you.
muy buen consejo tocayo yo estoy por comprar un semi usado y tenia dudas pero al parecer motor cummins es lo mas recomendado y no importa si esta en un peterbilt kenworth o international
Rite bro I have problems with d 13 head problem all the time coolant iration now dealer charge lot money ur exactly telling truth
Get a manual engine fan switch run it when the engine hits slightly over 200°
Your injectors and water pump will have long life.
Over heating is the root cause in injector and head problems in volvos
Thanks real talk
Maxxforce will run u out off business. Don't buy anything label maxxforce, you've been warned.
Buen video Hno. Gracias por la ayuda. Voy a comprar un Truck por primera vez y estoy interesado en un 2017 KW T680 isx cummins. Bendiciones y adelante con los videos.
Gracias por la información, bendiciones.
Thank you Francisco your honesty is very much appreciated please keep making videos for your fans..Tony pasa un buen dia...
Thanks very good information
You're right about cheap insurance/warranty companies. I had such insurance on a used Nissan that caught on fire on the highway. When I called the angry sounding lady shouted, "Was the problem mechanical or electrical?", I said "I guess mechanical?", and she shouted back "Then our insurance doesn't cover it!" and hung up, marking my "case" as "not covered'. Try fighting back against that when you're already broke and stuck by the side of the road. That's what those fake warranty companies are counting on! I think if I had said "mechanical" or "electrical" then the result would have been denial in both cases!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lol
Good Video 👍 😊 good advice 👍
Great information
I’m new your subscriber thank you for your time
Thank you for the reply
Great video
I'll keep my 2006 cat C15 peterbilt
So in the long run is better to just save enough money and buy a brand new truck and at least you'll make money and have peace of mind.
Francisco, great advice I must say. Personally I have a 2013 DD15 Cascadia & it is a very good truck for making money.
Mine has a legal tune, all emissions are in place & working properly, the truck puts 530 hp to the ground.
I feel the DD series engine are the best emissions engine.
If you know anyone, I would like to sale it & get a new 5700EX
HI I am interested in the truck email me at goldysingh992@gmail.com thanks
Good video.
Buen video.bro gracias
Check the carrier bearing. It cost me $1500 for my first repair coming out of a auction
If you are buying a DD-13 or 15, 1st or 2nd generation engines, make sure the oil pan is dropped and check the oil pick-ups to see if they have been replaced. If they haven't, have them replaced immediately. That is the reason my 1st generation DD-13 seized up (I was no longer the driver when it happened, so it wasn't me). A couple of our DD-15s had the same thing happen. They deteriorate prematurely.
From what year is considered the second generation engine?
From what year? I’m in the process of buying a DD13 Cascadia. You are saying the oil pan are so low they deteriorate?
@@yoban360 From what our mechanics say, the gaskets and tubing rot and the oil doesn't get pulled up so the engine becomes oil-starved and seize up. I towed another truck a few weeks ago where the side of the engine has a fist-sized hole in it from a blown piston. 2nd one in 2 weeks. We've just about gotten the last of our Cascadias sold off. Mine was a 2010. These were 2013-14.
yoban gonza The pickup assemblies are plastic and they’d crack causing low or no oil pressure thereby killing the engine. DD recalled some of them. Pull the oil pan off and replace the pickup and all o-rings.
Need common problems of 14.0 Detroit Freightliners. Also classic vs Columbia for oil field.
Always buy my trucks using approved used from the manufacturer ie Kenworth, Freightliner, Peterbilt,. Yes you pay a bit more but it is well worth the extra payment to get piece of mind...
premium2000 is a decent warranty co. I lost a 13 speed transmission 3 weeks after buying the truck they are put a brand new reman in. it cost me about 1800 out-of-pocket. I dealt with them on three or four trucks .and found them to be reasonable. if it's internally lubricated it's covered.
Hi brah , like the info very helpful.
What do you advise team owner operator ( husband and wife) drivers to buy what kind of truck ? Thank you
I’ll Stay With the Volvo . You just said It don’t go for the cheap stuff . 😁 Bendiciones Francisco Amaya 🙏🏻 Gracias
I am new to ur channel and i love it so far... te dejas cai.
I did all mistakes except the insurance 😁it was a 2013 Volvo with Cummins isx engine more than 700k miles on it
Thank you so so much my brother, we are support your Channel always. how we can contact with you, and ask for recommendations?
Francisco I appreciate your advices and your videos they're very very good informative we think you' pancho Francisco 😱
About PACCAR Engine its so true i regret getting that i wish i had CUMMINS engine
National truck protection covers fuel pumps but not the valve inside the fuel pump
I been that done that 🙄☹️ 6 yrs ago.
Hola Francisco , cual curso en linea , libro u otro materia educativo me recomiendas para aprender sobre camiones en general , sobre todo datos importantes que uno debe conocer de motores , transmisiones etc. gracias , muy utiles tus videos.
Thank you for info
What about Detroit 60 engine
You always make good videos with very helpful information. I have a 2011 Cascadia with a dd13. Is the dd13 a good engine? I have had it for 6 mo. No problems. Thanks for the good info
Tony 2 Tymes i also got the same truck and the same engine it has 230,000 kilometres now. Used it for 9 months now, and i already spent $6000 (canadian) just for diagnose and get it deleted.truck is getting derated and loosing power mechanic said have to replace the one box for $10,000.. wished i have watch this video before buying the truck..
Wow!
This guy has suck knowledge.... best videos I’ve seen on trucks
I love you man thank you....
Francisco, thank you for your video from an expert mechanic such as yourself. How can i go about hiring a good diesel mechanic when i purchase my Truck? Is it possible to hire you at your rate or do you know of a good mechanic and also after i purchase my Truck can i bring it to you to look over the engine before i hit the road? Thank you in advance and thanks for yet another insightful video.
I’m also interested. I’m in Fontana CA.
I just purchased a used truck from Penske in Kentucky and I’m driving over to California the same day I don’t know any good mechanics out in Louisville what would you recommend in that case thanks for the good knowledge
Thank you for los consejos,
Last advice dont buy a truck thinking you will make a whole lot of money in trucking. There is so much into consideration.
@francisco Amaya 2013 f/l cascadia Dash light dimming and flashing, can’t cut off hazards lights, clearance lights on truck continuously flashing, cruise control stop working as well as Engine break...Dash says No ABS NoSfu Eng 0, clicking noise once cut off truck coming from fuse box area under hood 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️😔😔
Francisco, can you please do video or direct me to one you've done on Wabco Ongaurd. Can it be disabled? Mine keeps malfunctioning, messing up cruise control, has even shut down truck a few times. Thank you for your incredible videos.
Yes, I can do that. I will upload it when I get it ready.
Hello Francisco and all trucker brothers. How are you? I really love Pete's ( looks, ride, and power but out of my budget ). I am going to haul reefer and dry vans - light loads on mountains. I am going to buy a new low maintenance truck with a DD15 engine 505 hp + 1750 torque. The first truck that comes to mind is Freightliner Cascadia but I like Freightliner 122SD ( it looks like the younger brother of Pete to me ). I need to get advice on how Freightliner 122 SD is with maintenance and fuel efficiency? Thanks in advance.
Hola francisco

Hey Francisco where is your shop located?
I'm looking to buy a 2015 volvo vnl42 with 361,000 on the clock. The truck has a salvage title from hitting a guardrail. The seller rebuilt the truck.im paying a local dealer 143 dollars to inspect the truck to see if its in good shape. What should I be really concerned about? Any tips would be appreciated. Also was thinking about batteries and assume that could be expensive. Can you tell me how many batts the truck has?
I’m in the inland empire and just bought a truck so you do dot inspections ?
i also got the same truck cascadia 2011 and the same engine DD13 it has 230,000 kilometres now. Used it for 9 months now, and i already spent $6000 (canadian) just for diagnose and get it deleted.truck is getting derated and loosing power mechanic said have to replace the one box for $10,000.. wished i have watch this video before buying the truck..
If you had a delete done on it, the box should be deleted also. Your power loss is most likely coming from the egr being deleted. If the egr actuator is not working properly, you will experience power loss, especially with 40,000 plus loads. Also, check the delta pressure sensor ports. They get clogged up with soot and affect the performance..
I am buying 2015 freightliner cascadia dd15 automatic transmission 477 mileage on. I go to test drive the truck there was a green light showing on the dashboard. They told me that the light is engine brake. I want to no if that is a big problem. Thanks ZUMA ROCK TRANSPOTATION LLC
Bro where you located?
Francisco tu opinion porfavor, im buying a detroit 14 2008 cascadia , dallas tx filters deleted , no DEF ,1300000 miles it may be repaired , werner truck, i cant see any leaks , the truck was working it has ifta stickers from this year all it needs is 4 tires, the cost is 20k cash
Original Engine? I mean, does it have any major job done?
My dd15 has hi coolant temperature 200 on straight road, is it normal?
And I can’t start in the morning , look like fuel has air
Yes, that is a normal temperature.
The thermostat opens at 194 ° so it is normal at 200° +/- but no more the 220°
Yes, the fuel check valve or for fuel leaks in the low pressure side.
@@franciscoamayaYT hey bro I was wondering if you can do a video on commen issues of the DT12 Transmission. That would be very helpful
What friction modifiers you recomend to use we change our own oil 15w40 Delo every 20k miles
What year did they remove the axial power turbine from the DD15?
2015
Im in fontana francisco. Wheres your shop at? I want you to check my truck out. having def problems
20k for maintenance account.
Is there anyone saw or has an experience of this issue
I have freightliner cascadia 2015 cummins engine. When ever I do oil change I start adding oil after 5k miles. I check on the ground I didn’t see oil. And I didn’t saw any oil leaks
Rings
When you mention buying the trucks from 2016 and after on the Cummins, are you referring to the truck year or the engine year? Say for instance the 2016 Freightliner with and ISX engine- the motor was built in 2015 I believe.
Yes, that is update engine. You call see the difference.
