    Well I think that you have talked about all the problems that I have had with my 2012 freightliner cascadia with the dd15 engine. I purchased my truck new and just after the 500,000 warranty expired (514,000 miles) my cylinder sleeve cracked. 90% of the problems you discussed I have experienced. Excellent video and very accurate. If you plan to own one you better budget at least $30,000 per year into future maintenance. Trust me you will need it

    The DD15 is not a bad engine, most people still think the engines are pre EGR or pre emissions like the Detroit Series 60 (12 liter), N14, CAT. Those things ran forever, new engines require more maintenance. The things Francisco is mentioning, do not all happen at once but over time these are things you will encounter. Injectors will be your most expensive repair.

    It's been a rough year for me. At 830k miles my coolant turned black and they replaced the egr cooler. That was $8k. At 910k miles there was fuel in the coolant. The shop said they pressure tested the cups and they were fine and the cylinder head was cracked. That repair was $15k. I can't wait till the cylinder liners need replaced.

    A lot of these problems are leaking oil which is not a big deal. The Cummins ISX seems to have catastrophic problems that will destroy the engine. You pick.

      You said it spot on I diagnose repair and rebuild all these engines and I'm in the middle of build on a isx 550 with the valve face half of it broke off and down in the cylinder 105k on engine the isx is known for broken valve stems valve faces worn out cam lobes spun cam bearings broken cranks dancing cylinder liners and the brass captive ahs in the newer antipolishing liners that erode and desinigrate I rebuild way more isx engines than driptroits and the Cummins have far less miles on them as to compare to the detroits aka(driptroits) last good Cummins with out all the major engine Hardline problems was the n14 series I work on them all for 10 plus hours a day and in those hours 6 days a week sometimes 7 these are my conclusions based on repetitive repair and issues seen

    I have 2010 freight liner Cascadia. DD15. Overall it didn’t give me any problemas. I replaced the coolant container because it got cracked. I paid 135 dollars for it aftermarket. It didn’t fit completely I had to make some adjustment.
    I see the second inyector had a little leak. I will replace it ASAP. Thanks for the information.

    I’d like to say that you are correct about the common oil leaks on the DD15/13/16 engines. But other failures such as fuel pump failures are cause by customers or other repair facilities not properly priming the fuel system. Also simple maintenance can definitely lessen the problems drivers have with these engines, and with the after treatment system.
    I am an expert certified Detroit trained technician from California. I always do my best to try to inform customers about these engines.

      Tell me one modern emissions engine that doesn’t have plenty of common “problems “. They all suck. You could take a Detroit , a Cummins, a Paccar, and a Volvo and delete the crap off of them and they’ll all give great service with good fuel economy.

    Had almost all the issues you mentioned in the first year, i bought the truck with 600k miles, its all started with fuel pump that destroyed injectors, dealer estimated 17k to fix, then oil pump, then injector cups that mixed fuel and coolant, then water pump, and a lot to mention, i worked on most of that my self and yet spent over $30k so far.

      The biggest issue with fuel pump failure is drivers letting the fuel get less than 1/4 tank. NEVER let your truck go under 1/4 fuel level. You can tell if your fuel pump is bad you will hear a ticking noise from the pump or you will see bits of metal inside your fuel filter housing.

    Leaking egr actuator
    Injector cups fuel in coolant system
    Two fuel lines to common rail fail almost got in fire
    O ring for oil system fail and cause turbine bering fail , its ruined gear section and crankshaft
    And now I have to replace damn engine dd15 crap
    If I knew about these problems earlier I would save my engine , but official Freightliner don’t tell anything about this shit they only telling that dd15 most “reliable “ “ fuel efficient “ and powerful engine. I will swap series 60 into my cascadia and screw EPA shit

  • @garyhoyer5689
    @garyhoyer5689 Před 5 lety

    My 2009 DD15 had the turbo replaced and a reman DPF filter installed by Freightliner 14 weeks ago.I had no issues for 12 weeks. Then another problem started happening. The regen cycle going down the road changes noise levels - quieter during the cycle and noticebley louder when the regen cycle is complete. This is normal. What is not normal is that now, at the end of the regen cycle going down the road, right when the noise level changes I get a check engne light. The light will remain on until I shut the engine off. When I restart the engine the check engine light is out and stays out until the end of the next regen cycle is complete and then I get the check engine light again. This doesn't happen every time but more often than not. I was able to get to my regular mechanics garage once with the check engine light still on. There had been 15 instances of a high temp on something. Sorry I don't recall the entire error message. They used a computer to force a regen and all temperatures remained in the normal range. I ah no issues for a week, then it started acting up again. I think that the regen cycle is not being completed as it should. I've driven this truck over 300,000 miles and have never changed or cleaned the dozer injector that you did in one of your videos. The truck has 907,000 miles on it now. With what I've written here do you think it might be the dozer injector or am I off track?

    This is a EPA 10 DD15, 90% of these oil leaks and o-rings getting hard, etc have been fixed with updated gaskets with the 2014 engine year. (2 fuel filters instead of 3)

    • @JosephArata
      @JosephArata Před 5 lety

      EPA2010 was the first generation and almost all of the new production issues they found with it, were fixed as you said in EPA2014. They sell most of the update kits that fix EPA2010 engines still from the dealer. They sell a retrofit for 3 filter to two filter housing, changing it to the new 2 filter housing extends service life of the fuel filter.

    common dd oil leaks, DD13 cam housing cracks and leaks oil, DD15 cam housing leaks oil, coolant module, oil pressure sensor, oil pan gasket, crankcase breather, depending on year fuel pump, air compressor. DD is just like every other detroit they leak oil. later year front crank seal housing are aluminum and errode causing oil leak at front of oil pan.
    model year 13 and older replace your oil pick up tube O rings it will save your engine.

      Its scarier to have a Cummins isx or x15 engine with its abundant engine failure issues like broken valve faces or broken valve stems and their brass cylinder lines which erode away and the line drops down blowing head gasket crankshaft snapping at balancer and in-between cylinder 4-5 and carbon polishing issue that's where newer engines and rebuilds now put in the anti polishing lines with the captive brass shit shims and their cam lobes wearing out injector side most often I'm in the middle of a isx 550 rebuild now valve face broke and it ended up tearing up the line piston and took out the turbo with the debris only 105 k on it is much rather have a Detroit I rebuild far more Cummins at lower mileage than I do Detroit's where I work

    Papa, I want to ask you something, if you can answer when you have time please sir...
    I am driving a 2012 Freightliner Cascadia dd15 , we by used and we fix everything, but i will be driving or parked and it may randomly cutt off!!! I mean total power loss, if I am rolling with a load 40,000+ lbs and I am rolling on the highway it cuts off bad, like 3 or 5 times, sometimes it gets bad, but if I am rolling it will try to power 3 times or 6 times and then it will come back on, all while I am rolling on the highway...
    I am now at Stoops Freightliner, but they couldnt find the cause, but these guys never test drive it to duplicate the problem!!!
    One of the owners, the $$$ guy said close it out after diagnosis, I think to save money, cause they want to give me another truck in a week or two, but I think they can fix it...
    Do you have any idea what could be cause of it cutting off?
    I did like already subscribed and shared on FB...
    Let me know what you think papa ??
    Gracias Amigo!!!
    Peace and Love!!!

    • @luashelton9320
      @luashelton9320 Před 5 lety +2

      Late model 60 series gliders are getting harder and harder to find. I'm driving a 3 yr old glider . At 125,000 miles the bull gear tore up suddenly and caused catastrophic damage. Warranty covered it ... You gotta be the soot police with the 60 series. And know that you ain't gonna get anything but re-manufactured parts for it. Aside from that, I kiss the ground this truck walks on!!!!!

    • @gsxr1189

      Gs Xr They are few and far between. 813,000 miles on mine with no bullgear replacement. Used oil is analyzed regularly and no abnormal wear metals yet. All bullgear failures could be prevented by just doing a used oil analysis regularly. Wear metals will start to rise in the oil samples long before the gear fails and destroys the gear train. I drove for a fleet of 12.7 Series 60 buses. The idle time and abuse they got was unreal . I never had nor did i hear of another driver experiencing a bullgear failure. From 2002 up they eliminated the issue completely by doing away with the roller bearings in the gear and using a bushing design.
      A lot of premature bullgear failures were due to rebuilders improperly replacing the bearings on the bullgear during an overhaul.

      If the leak is coming from the area where the exhaust manifold is located, that mean the the coolant collectors gasket is leaking.
      If the leak is big replace it, if you see some coolant drop only it can wait.
      The problem has not effect in the ENGINE functionality.
