Will it Run?!? 1982 Chevrolet Dually Flatbed With a 454 Big Block! Abandoned for 16 Years!

- A coworker was looking for a manual transmission vehicle to show his sons how to drive a stick and found this 1982 Chevrolet C30 flatbed that a mutual friend had big plans for 16 years ago but it had been sitting ever since. He talked him into selling it so now lets see if we can get it back on the road! Since this project was meant to teach his children how to drive a manual transmission it's not for sale at this time. Remember proceeds from the sales of merchandise this month will go towards parts (and fuel) to get this thing safe and roadworthy! As always, thanks for watching!

Duffers popping his nose up through that fifth wheel hatch was a hoot.
I know it's stock CZcams music but the music you chose had me expecting to see Jaw Tooth at trackside with some train live action.
With the Morning Wood Lumber Tshirt don't laugh there's a town here in Chicago's far south burbs Beecher Illinois that has or had a butcher shop that made almost as much money selling Tshirts with the business name on it. The butcher shop name? Beecher Meat.
I'd buy that shirt!
Agreed. Duff popping his nose up was perfect timing. Couldn't have done it better if he tried, and I would buy that shirt too.
That's gooseneck ball access. No 5th wheel involved.
Yes, recognized Jaw Tooth's intro/outro, missed the rooster crowing, though. Grew up in Iroquois Co, (Donovan). Have made many trips to and thru Beecher. We used to think the school mascot should have been "Meat" lol
@@berniemarkley actually modeled a fictional town on a module for the model railroad club I belonged to back in the 80s and named it Beecher simply so I could have the lineside factory named Beecher Tool & Die. Anyone complained that it was dirty I told them find a map of Illinois and look up Beecher. I neither confirmed nor denied if they actually had a factory by that name.
Loved Duff looking up/out from the 5th wheel access. I literally started to spray my coffee out from my mouth ! Such a great dog...and you're pretty cool too, Mortske !!
I had the same breed of dog ( Brittany Spaniel) as Duff. Mine was Named Ferris ( yes he was named after THAT Ferris … Bueller, Bueller lol) they are very smart and excellent hunting dogs but they are also Goofy as heck and full of life. My Ferris will have been gone a full decade the end of October this year and it still hurts a bit. Nonetheless watching Mortske and Duff reminds me of the good times I had with my Brittany Ferris.
@@barryismygod if you can, get another one buddy!
That's gooseneck access. No 5th wheel involved at all.
Whatever
@@billoc1255 who hurt you?
Miss you Duff and Mortske. Got to make time for some relaxation. See you later. Have fun.
Dang, I graduated HS in 82 when the truck was made. The old gal will see the road again thanks to the ever talented Mortske. And a Happy Labor Day to you and Duff Dog Mort.
Same to you John
I'm glad someone graduated, I couldn't even remember where my locker was by grade twelve. Dam that devil lettuce
I'd would have been in the class of 82 myself. I kind of went the same way as Old Polak..
@@jaywebb3105 Yup its all a big blur now , I think I was suppose to graduate in 1980 or something 😅. The seventies were the best years of my life . Drive in movies , roller rinks and arcades.
@@oldpolak5203 hahaha
Passing down knowledge to the next generation one sandmich at a time priceless.
There's nothing like a big block! It was great watching you guys goof around and getting that truck running, it was especially funny looking at Duff the access panel in the bed 😂 keep up the great work 👍☮️🇺🇲
I snort laughed when you said "you have insurance on this right?" Duff cracked me up on this thing too, especially looking up through that goose neck opening. To be honest, this truck really isn't bad considering the stuff you've made videos of running and driving. This thing's got a lot left in it. Using it to teach the younger generation is even better.
He's a character. It's a pretty good rig.
that boy driving that truck reminded me of when my dad taught me drive a stick. ole 78 bronco 400m 6 inch lift had either 33" or 35's on it. fun times. tat boy will remember that for a long time
Sweet, Great to see a younger one get involved, Thumbs Up Guys!.......
I ran the injection machine that molded the two steering shafts together with plastic for a few years. Both styles actually, the department that built the steering column in that truck is about a city block long and uses 3 story tall 500T presses to form the yokes for tilt steering. Those presses were 1 story below your feet and two stories above your head. They shook the concrete with every cycle. After that, Delphi decided to try mini cells that use CNC machines and newer tech to build and assemble steering columns. They were considered major machining departments so we were paid way too much. These cells were WAY smaller but the added technology meant more problems, hiring two full time engineers per cell, per shift and they could barely put out the same numbers as the original department. I ended up earning the coordinator position in my cell which led to me coming in on a Sunday with all the GM bigwigs to manually build and assemble the first 12 H2 steering columns in existence. I wish I had added my own mark to them somewhere. Sorry for the ramble, great stuff as always!
Wow! big stuff! Thanks for sharing!
Worked at Delphi in Rochester, the old quadrajet plant. 50000 sq ft of oil soaked ground and concrete, screw machines.
How neat is that
@@cleasonleasure4832 Sweet!
what a neat ole farm truck ..John-Boy whipping that 4 speed like it's nobodys business..good to see the youngens getting taught right, start out in a manual and then go to a automatic if you so choose..i learned manual in a chevette and a old mercury capri..good times back in the late 80s
The drive segment with Dad and son reminded me of the times when Dad would take me down the country roads and taught me to drive a manual. His truck was a 75 F-100 with a 351w and a 3 on the tree. Manual steering, manual brakes, and bias-ply tires. He made me stop every time I would make a mistake with the clutch. Good times, I miss that truck, wish he never had sold it. Great Episode. - Jamie
Good times!
You're a good sport to let you place be the training ground for learning standard driving
Kids are gaining a skill most of their generation won't have lol Awesome video! remember my first time driving a stick. Old 76 chevy 3/4 ton with granny low. Dad and me stopped off at the vfw for a fish sammich on friday and he went a bit to heavy on the beer pitcher. So it was trial by fire for me driving us home. Only stalled it once.
Good times!
I think that was way too easy! Good thing Duff was there to keep things interesting! Tell Pookie he needs a channel!
He sure does!
Oh hell yeah! It's another MULLET MORTSKE MONDAY Labor day special!!!!
Im in full agreement that duff popping up in fifth wheel hole was the highlight of my day
Duff is convinced there’s a mouse inside that instrument panel, he kept shoving his nose in there 😂😂. Well done to that young fella, he nailed it . Great vid 👍
My thoughts exactly
Reminds me of driving my nabors old cj7 years back. That kid did good for his first trip.
Duff looking thru the gooseneck ball hole in bed is kool he was really checking it out
Another good one. Cracks me up when you gag at the yuk you find in these trucks and cars.
Duff looking through the gooseneck cover had me cracking up! Have a good one man:)
Same to you!
Just for that comment I'm wearing bib overalls out in public forevermore. I wasn't born in Oklahoma but I got here as fast as my failures in several other states could get me here. Also it might keep me from getting pressure washed.
First time I drove a manual was when I had stayed home sick from school for a week and one morning, both parents went off to work and I got out on my bike while it was snowing and rode across town to pick up a car from an impound auction. '86 Mercury Lynx (like an Escort) with a 4-speed for $60. Brakes shot, exhaust shot, had a flat tire. Interior full of trash. Put the spare on it and had a gravel towing company lot to teach myself the basics before throwing my bike in the back and driving it home. Parked it down the street for a few weeks and no one was the wiser until they said we were moving to Texas and I slipped and said, "but I don't want to ride in the U-Haul I want to drive my own car...*WHAT OWN CAR*...um...well..." and they made me sell it because it didn't have A/C. The next 3 cars I owned down there had A/C but only in one did it work. What a smart decision.
What a story!
I just picked up a 80 c30 with a flat bed parked since 2010 made me laugh when I seen the thumbnail I said hey that looks like my truck
Happy Labor Day Mortske and Duff
Same to you
Thanks Mortske and Duff! Put the labor in labor day.
Our pleasure!
Oh that welding..."ah lets throw three or four more rods at it" Pretty sweet find. I'd put that ol boy right back to work
Right on
Duffers was loving that thing! 😅
oh yeah!
That’s awesome I learned how to drive working for my uncle on his dairy farm at age 9 driving his 1964 ford flat bed .took out some stuff a couple times but I think all kids need to learn how to drive standards for sure all my kids learned how
Awesome!
😂😂Duff peeking through the hatch. It's awesome that you guys are showing the boy how to drive a stick. I was lucky enough to have a buddy who's family showed me how in an International Scout II on some dirt roads in N Va way back in the early 70s. There's a freeway through there now.
Thanks for sharing!
That is so awesome that your coworker is teaching his son how to drive a manual trans! And generous of you to let him go at it near your new shop! My first car was a manual 87' Isuzu I-Mark and I didn't have a choice but to learn. I'm glad to see some are still passing it on. Happy Labor Day, Mortske and Duff, and thanks for another great episode.
Best way to learn!
Wow what a great find 😎👍.
Happy Labor day!🇺🇲 Thanks for the awesome content and keeping these builds coming. I look forward to seeing Duff Dog riding with you in your gocart.
Our pleasure
OMG that upside down steering wheel would drive my OCD to the stratosphere! LOL
Haha, it'll get addressed
Great as always and very kind of you to be helping the boys with getting this truck fixed up for them.
Hi Yo Duffer.......Away!!!!!! As Duff runs alongside the flatbed!!!
Nice truck with A/C and Power Steering for learning to drive a manual.
I'm from NE Ohio and used to say "warsh" also until I moved to Columbia SC and found myself just saying "wash". I think someone said something too me. Had relatives from western Pennsylvania, I think they said " warsh" also. In fact, that's where it may have entered my vocabulary from. Enjoyed the video. Duff's a gas!
Thanks Jason!
Thanks for the holiday Mortske Monday! Thanks for the editing work Chin! Good luck🐾🍺
Our pleasure Stu
Awesome thanx for helping turn boys into men. A North Dakota farmer taught me how to drive grain truck 49 years ago I am 57 now and still have a third pedal.
Awesome!
Exactly like the one I'm fighting with now but by myself. I need 'ole DUFF to help me with mine for sure. You two make a great team !! Keep up the good work ! I hope to see you put disc brakes on the back of a chevy 1 ton one day like I am trying to do now. We love your channel down here in South Ga. Keep up the good work!! THANKS!!
Always enjoy hangin' with Mortske on a Monday!
Even Duff loves a big block
Dang right
Hey Mortske: Real good job getting that '82 C30 flatbed running and running well for your co-worker and his kid...Good to see that Duff was hard at work inspecting the rig with his nose right up inside the gauge cluster and through the fifth wheel assembly as well as camping out in the cab of the rig... Good Labor Day tribute to all the roadsteration mechanics out there getting their heaps back on the road... From the home of PB Blaster, Cleveland, Ohio..........
The way Puddin talks about you all the time, I'm given to thinking you won't have a problem with "the old reach around" 😁
oh boy
@@MortskeRepair I loved the sequence on the pressure washer decal and that it shows how to keep Oklahomans off your porch! Puddin and his pal Slick will go into convulsions over that one! Keep it up. Love your show!
@@brenthoyer much appreciated!
LMAO, “If you can’t weld good, weld a lot”
I know what you mean about reversing directions. My wife’s “keep coming” looks the same as “stop” it’s just stop looks more panicked.
Great to see kids behind the wheel with dad.
Great video as always!
Good stuff!
It's nice to see Mortske making friends.
We try
You are doing the Lords Work one Square Body at a Time. You are a True Gentlemen and a Scholar for Donating to them Boys Truck Fund, just a Stand up Gesture. I will certainly do my Part to show Support. Appreciate you having us along, catch you on the next one. Keep It Safe Out There Sir
Much appreciated David!
No broken starters, no explosions, no fire, no clogged carbs, no sammiches!!! Am I even watching Mortske repair anymore? Honestly your content is only getting better by the video. I've got total non car people I'm stationed with watching you due to the entertainment value. Keep em coming man and expect some sweet coast guard merch heading your way!!
Sometimes we get lucky!
I love stick shift vehicles. Especially 4 speeds. Hopefully I can get the opportunity to drive one day. Keep up the great work Mortske
Symbol says spray the Latter-Day Saints when they knock at your door on a Saturday at 7:00 a.m. LOL
Happy Labor Day. Hope you get some time off. Take care.
Turned out good ! always great to teach the lost art of manual driving !
Heck yes it is!
I put 265 /75/16 on some old steel 8 lug rims and bolted them on the back of my 90 GMC Dooley. Works great 4x4 now feels good looks goofy but I got six these 265's so save the money and use them up.
Whoa! What a trip! Seeing you fix a vehicle that's ACTUALLY going to be driven! I KNEW you knew how to save a vehicle! Glad to see it's not just another going from one dudes yard to another, all to be forgotten.
We've put quite a few back on the road...
Lucky kid learning how to drive a manual in a square body. Greetings from PR. Nice video!!
Thanks 👍
Wicked great video!!!!!!
So nice to see a Dad teaching his son to drive a stick shift!!!!!!
Kids these days have no idea how much fun it can be!!!! 😂😂
Love to Duffers ❤
Well said!
Duff and the knuckleheads live, Dang!
Duff doesn’t care who’s driving he just wants to ride eh? Lucky kid. The tires on that thing are older than he is. Good on ya guys, enjoyed the video.
Duff ain't fussy!
Congrats John and Rubin!!!!!! Enjoy your Killer C30!!!!! A flatbed for your first car.....BAD ARSE!!!!!!!!
Be ready for phone calls from kids ya know!!!!!(more ya know music here Mortske)
I’m also a 81 model year. Cool truck. 👍
What's better, Duff burying his nose in the gauge cluster or his "SURPRISE!" showing up in the 5th wheel plate? Never get tired of Duff's antics...
He's an interesting character
I remember my first time driving a manual I was 10 years old in 2014. And I got Swear that a lot by my father. I’m now really hot at driving manual
Hi from uk TM & DD 👋 👍 🐾 🐾 another great find even if not yours it did well to just come back round but most valuable bit is young man getting lessons from dad👌 "" now that was pretty neat "" 🤣🤣 but yeah good job and many more memories you helped to find 👌and the tanks was one of those 50/50 > 90 situations I noticed 👍🤣 thanks for your time be safe and see you soon 👍 👋🐾🐾
Thanks much Mark!
Well that was fun! Lol
Yes pookie needs his own channel!
Great cause. Picked up a tank top for my wife. Appreciate you looking out for the younger generation.
Much appreciated!
Mortske, always good to involve your friends. Another satisfying Monday visit. Duff is good help as usual. Dave.
Always!
A Dually with a flat bed makes for great entertainment. The older 3 speeds with the unsynchronized low were the best for picking up bales.
With 2 people and one pupple, you can accomplish a lot of work in a short period of time. Interesting and informative video, including the extra friends.
Exactly!
Hey Hey! What a find, kinda big for a learner vehicle but hey, that 10 year old looks like he’s got it nailed! Thanks for the GREAT video!
Duff dog on the job again cheers from the UK 🇬🇧

I just watched the new shop video on your other channel. I just subscribed to that one a few days ago.
I was re-reading my comments tonight and I would like to apologize for the Charles Bronson joke in my earlier comment. It was a rude thing for me to say. I certainly didn’t mean any offense to anyone or to make light of something as serious as cancer. My best friend and my grandmother both lost their battle with it.
No worries, thanks for watching!
Thanks for the great video on Mortske Monday. Happy Labor Day! 👍👊💪
Our pleasure!
I learned on an old Jeep my uncle had stringing barbed wire fence.
Heck yeah!
Drove a 77 flat bed 1 ton many miles . Big block that got 9 mpg empty or full...(worked at my uncles sawmill)
I loved it...good vid M.
Right on
👍⭐
Happy Labor day!
One way to get Mortske,
To do something is to Bribe him with a Cookie!!

Cool video!! The wiper part made me laugh. My buddy use to punch the dash of his 82 C10 and the wipers would make a swipe. Lol.

Was waiting all weekend for mortski video.Im waaaaaay up in Northern Canada working at a good mine away from family and these videos sure pass the long nights thanks mortski and duff
Wow that North Dakota kid is awesome! Wonder if South Dakotans could learn that fast?
Not likely!
Maybe there's dead mice behind the guages.... maybe some nice mouse houses back there, that's why Duff be huffing it so much
Thats the mouse urinal
Duff at his classic best in this one. He really loves that truck. :) Big block vibrations! Good vibrations!
He's something!
My first car had a 454 in it, but it was 47 feet long. The old Oldsmobile delta 98. I'm thinking that the 98 was a measurement of the length....lol
nice!
Lots of sammichs on this project ! Good learning experience for the kids !
As always great to see you guys…..
Back around 2004, I picked up a similar Chebby dually, a 78 Crew Cab, rusty and crusty, with a 454 and AT, for only 400 bucks. I had a buddy tow it home on his trailer, since the fuel tanks were full of orange water. But a couple days spent draining and cleaning those big, round, homemade steel tanks rendered them usable. I did all the basic tune up steps on the 454, and she roared to life, albeit a bit roughly, and with abundant blowby and blue smoke. But it ran and drove, and the brakes even worked! It had a huge steel flatbed just like yours. I sold it for $750 about 2 days after listing it!
Love them crew cabs
Duff doin' his traditional underbody inspection routine.
Back in the day one of the mechanics at the old garage used to say 'put a lil' hair around that hole and you'll find it'. Can't quite get the dipstick to go back in? 'Put a lil' hair around it'.
Classic!
Cool truck Mortske. BBC and a four speed! Who needs brakes? Great line buddy. Thanks for the great video. Big Al.
Thanks 👍
One thing I noticed about Mortske , if he likes you he plays around with your temperament. Gotta have thick skin to be friends with him.
Dang right!
Nice watching this on the iPhone 12 life is good and keep the square bodies coming she's good

great job helping buddy out. ya I learnt how to drive a old ramp truck standard with the push button starter on the floor ya need 4 legs. great he is passing on the stick shift teaching great donuts to. cheers guys.

Hey Mortske and Duff👋, great video today 👍🏻. Aways good to teach the manual trans to the young generation. The old truck need a little to get it going and a few parts . But, the drive at the end was cool 😎. Thanks for sharing 👋 ,Have a great labor day 👋

Bringing the content on a holiday no less! And a youngster learning stick? How neat is that?! Great stuff Mortske and Duff!
We do what we can!
Hey Mortske, your getting a lot of fans round the shop with this will it run videos- but they're mostly 4 legged, have a pointed nose and a tail! (hope you get the Fivels to go west!). Great to see that kid learning to drive stick, i'm currently teaching my 18 year old to do the same and he's been complaining about the clutch pedal hurting his poor little leg!!
i have a soft spot for father/son projects ;)
loved this one 😊
Glad you liked it!
Good to help your friends. The kid will never forget this day.
Hopefully not!
Awesome stuff, mate! Great to see a young fella learning the manual too. Both my girls did the same, but not at 10 years old. Suburbia seems to generate more nosey-parkers and cars with flashing red and blue lights that ruin your day, so it's best not to goad the buggers.
She's got a bit of work to do on her, the old beast (no, not Mrs Chin - the Chev C30). Looks like its about time I bought more than decals, eh? Speaking of decals, had an out-loud laugh with the "No Penguins" decal (on the waterblaster) and a bloody good belly laugh with the "No Spray Oklahomans" decal. Needed a good laugh after such a shite last few days, so it was very much appreciated, thanks.
Good to see my Skylark hasn't gone anywhere. Are we going to get to see what you've been doing with it soon? It looks such a beauty and I'm already seeing it parked in front of my garage ☺
Glad I stayed up for it. This video has made me smile in a rather difficult time and I am all the better for it. Thanks for being you, mate. Spot ya next week. All the best.
Glad you enjoyed it Lance! Stay tuned for Skylark content!
