The message of this movie is so important, especially for kids to learn. The fact that BOTH sides had prejudice and not willing to communicate. I watched this movie so many times as a kid, and even today when ever there are news of political parties fighting etc, I just hear in my head the song "Savages, savages! Barely even human!"

Interesting thing: the song that was in the credits, If I Never Knew You, was actually a duet between Pocahontas and John Smith in the prisoner tent. It was taken out of the film for years, but the special edition release put it back in later on.

I loved this movie as a kid. Pocahontas's songs are some of my favorite of all Disney movies and the art is beautiful. I agree they made great color choices and I love how her hair moves in the wind. It's the first time I learned about animism, the belief that all beings have a soul, and that's impacted me greatly.
One of the major criticisms of this movie is that there was a real Native American named Pocahontas, and a Jon Smith, and her story is quite tragic. I think the movie, from what I remember, had some good messages about colonization (like what Wiggins says), but it is white washed compared to the real history of Pocahontas and native people in the U.S.

Fun fact: “If I Never Knew You” (the love song that plays in the end credits) was originally written for the scene where Pocahontas and John Smith meet for the last time in the tent before he is set to be executed. It was cut when during test screenings kids got squeamish. It’s a very serious and tender love ballad and was eventually restored for the 10th Anniversary DVD along with a reprise at the end when Pocahontas and John Smith share their last kiss. I can understand why it was cut, but with it in I think it strengthens the romance even more. Also I always enjoyed the pop renditions of Disney songs during the end credits as it was like a souvenir from the movie you took home with you as the credits rolled. Great reaction as always!

Oh my god, that's my favorite Disney princess movie since I'm a little girl. I was so jealous of Pocahontas' long beautiful hair.
That's good to understand how wise the movie is when you watch it as an adult. I like to think the scene from " The Lion king 2 " where Kiara manages to reason Simba in the end was inspired of that movie.
If you want my opinion, the almost war will still happen if Kocoum killed John (he was clearly physically stronger that him) because the colons will want to take revenge. But it's interesting to see Thomas being the only one showing hesitation during the " Savages " song

David Ogden Stiers (rhymes with Flyers or Wires) who voices Governor Ratcliffe was a very well known character actor who appeared in dozens of television shows and films, probably best known for playing Major Charles Winchester on the old M*A*S*H TV series. He also voiced several other characters for Disney, including Cogsworth the clock in "Beauty & the Beast", the old priest who saves baby Quasimodo's life at the beginning of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", and the alien scientist who creates Stitch in "Lilo and Stitch".

I definitely felt like this movie was important to me growing up. It's a good entry level about learning tolerance, acceptance, discussion etc. Yes, it's problematic considering its historical content. And trust me, as a Brit, we still don't teach enough at my school days about the detriments the British Empire did for communities. So knowing the history, it can be problematic and simplifying the history but as a kid...I got the message. It was a earnest message.

I loved this movie as a kid, but I agree with the criticisms it gets. This movie ages her, she was only a kid when she met John Smith (who was a big fibber, btw), it creates a romantic relationship between the two (again she was only a kid when she met him), and romanticizes her life, especially the movie sequel. In real life she was captured and sold to an older man who later married her when she was only 17 (John Rolfe). She died when she was only 20 years old. Her life was pretty tragic

24:25 That part annoys me. Why did she have to lashed out at Thomas when he shot Kocoum like that?? John ALMOST got killed and Thomas saved his life!
Plus, she never really wanted to marry Kocoum anyway because she had absolute NO INTEREST in him, whatsoever. Kocoum had a strict and very serious behavior while she on the other hand, was more adventurous, carefree, and independent and she thought that he was way too boring for her. And now that he's gone, she should (and should have) _thank_ Thomas for sparing John's life and freeing from that silly *arranged-marriage* she never really wanted to be in the first place! 🤦‍♀️
