Coco is a 2017 American animated fantasy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It was directed by Lee Unkrich, co-directed by Adrian Molina, and produced by Darla K. Anderson, from a screenplay written by Molina and Matthew Aldrich, and a story by Unkrich, Molina, Aldrich, and Jason Katz, based on an original idea conceived by Unkrich. The film stars the voices of Anthony Gonzalez, Gael García Bernal, Benjamin Bratt, Alanna Ubach, Renée Victor, Ana Ofelia Murguía, and Edward James Olmos. The story follows a 12-year-old boy named Miguel (Gonzalez) who is accidentally transported to the Land of the Dead, where he seeks the help of his deceased musician great-great-grandfather to return him to his family and reverse their ban on music.
The concept for Coco is inspired by the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead. Pixar began developing the animation in 2016. Unkrich, Molina, and some of the film's crew visited Mexico for research. Composer Michael Giacchino, who had worked on prior Pixar animated features, composed the score. No you were not the only one who ugly cried during Coco. I watched it in the cinema in Spanish with my family. Everyone in the theater was crying ! Incredible animated film, definitely deserved that Oscar.
God it must have been so nice to experience that. Considering it was in Spanish you'd assume everyone in that theather would relate a little more than a normal group of people, so it's just a whole room of people sharing a bonding moment 😭

A little detail I love about this movie is that throughout it, you can see Hector without any shoes on. But at the end of the movie, when he finally is able to cross, you can see he's finally wearing shoes. Since the family's business revolved around shoes, Hector not wearing them symbolized how he wasn't part of the family and was cast aside. But as he reconciled with Imelda, he is finally being accepted by the family and given his own pair.

@@niallnochillAnother fun fact: music can help with memory. There have been a lot of studies that indicate that music can help with memory and behavioral issues. Patients with Alzheimer's or Dementia have been seen to remember some things after hearing music. An example here on CZcams is Marta Gonzalez, who used to be a professional ballerina listening to Swan Lake again and trying to dance to it. So Coco reacting to it is a very realistic thing!

This movie absolutely kills me everytime. My grandma had dementia. One day, when I was 25, I played some music for her. She snap out of it for a minute, asking "Where is the kid?" meaning me, I told her "I'm here, grandma" and she smiled and said "What happend? You grew up" 😆 it's a bittersweet memory, also kinda funny. Music is so powerful!

Same with my grandma, she was battling Alzheimer for most of what I remember. When the dementia got worse and she couldn't recognise me or my mom, music was the only thing that brought her back. Alzheimer and dementia are such ugly diseases to witness.

I actually knew a bit about Frida before Coco, in part thanks to the biopic Frida staring Selma Hayek and reading more about her later on. Coco actually portrayers really well, being an egocentric surreal artist, which is funny.
He should watch Frida next!
My mother is an art historian but I only just realized the reference this time around.
I wrote a report on Frida in high school art 4 so seeing hector 1) pretend to be her and 2) her actually showing up in the movie with the monkey from her self portrait as her spirit guide was massive for me

First time I watched Coco, I cried SO much at that scene!
I love how you inmediately wanted to put your own ofrenda for your relatives. The whole thing about the altar is to, as a family, gather all the favorite food for our dead relatives and share memories of them. Its not just about that day, but how we continue our families traditions ❤
I’ve been researching Irish pagan traditions, and it kind of reminded me of Samhain (and I’m sure Scotland has similar traditions). I think there’s just an innate desire in humans to honor our ancestors, the people who came before us and made our lives possible. Even Christians leave flowers at gravestones and talk to their dead loved ones, believing they’re “listening from heaven”
As a Mexican thank you for appreciating our culture! As a healthcare worker working with dementia and Alzheimer’s patients is so rewarding, despite all the difficulties it’s those little moments of light that make everything worth it.
After Pixar, we should get him on the Ghibli train!

From a cultural standpoint, Coco means the world to me. The sheer respect for Mexican culture in this movie is just incredible. The music, the food & the preparations for The Day Of The Dead. The culture itself is part of who I am and it's very important, as is the message of the importance of family.
Yeesss, i'm not mexican but I'm Latina and you barely see that type of representation so i was so excited when Encanto came out (I'm Colombian) and then I went to see it and I was like guys that's not my country. I mean it's not the worst movie ever but it doesn't really like represent the culture quite like coco

I learned about dia de los muertos from a teacher who learned in Mexico, I really enjoyed how the bridge was made out of marigold petals
@@tux_duh That is a beautiful touch, considering for The Day Of The Dead, the marigold represents the brevity of life. It also really blew my mind to find out who the Land of the Dead customs agent was played by: Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias.

This movie holds a special place in my heart; one day my grandpa came off of his cancer treatment, and watched it with me.
He died a couple of days after telling me that he hopes I’ll remember him.
We played that song, ‘Remember me’ in his wake.
I still cry to this movie remembering his goofy smile when Mama Coco remembered her Papa.
I do hope you cherish this movie, as it’s a great movie. 💕

This one rly hits me too. I’ve worked in memory care in the past for many years (taking care of ppl with dementia and Alzheimer’s etc) and… this movie really nails it. In the most flattering way, of course. But nails it.
And to me what gets me is the thing most people do is they tuck grandma in a facility somewhere and visit maybe once a year. And these women, who are just like Coco, sit in dark rooms with a blanket on them and stare and a wall with a call light button clipped to them. All day. There’s just not enough resources to do anything but very basic care and some daytime activities and meals. Dinner is often the most exciting thing that happens.
So for me just seeing Miguel talk to coco at the beginning and including her in things even if she’s acting absent, is so fucking beautiful. Please if you can in any way, even if it’s gross and inconvenient, keep your family home with you and take care of them.
Treat them with kindness and patience and dignity as they drift into their final sleep. They will be scared and angry and upsetting at times. But they will be unequivocally happier and calmer at home with you than in a facility. I’ve worked at awful ones and I’ve worked at richy rich fancy ones. They’re all a far far FAR cry from a young boy showing off his dimples to his great grandmother.
Yeah. For anyone who has had a loved one with Alzheimer's or dementia, this movie hits really hard. One of my best and oldest friend's Mother had Alzheimer's and I was with her when her Mother forgot her and asked who she was the first time. It was devastating to her. And she, unfortunately, didn't have that moment of lucidity at the end where she saw and knew her daughter at the end.
No shame in the tears in this film at all. I still cry everytime I see it.
The movie portrays it so well. Even just her facial expressions, but also how music and the memory of music really is stored differently in the brain and can remain when so many other things are already forgotten.
My grandmother had dementia, long before I was born even. I met her before she died, but only once as a baby. My mother told me the story many times, because this was actually that last moment of lucidity for her. She long couldn't recognize her daughter anymore, but when she saw baby me she actually understood that this was her granddaughter, at least for that moment, and you could tell how much it meant to her.
I watched this movie with my mother, and unsurprisingly we both cried a lot.
My father didn’t have Alzheimer’s, but he did suffer from chronic (misdiagnosed) Lyme disease, it took him a piece at a time, and it’s progress was terrifyingly fast, the problem is that it mimics so many other diseases/maladies, he had been misdiagnosed with Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, a stroke, only after every other diagnosis failed did they test for Lyme, and by then it was too late, he quickly became bedridden and required constant care, we did care for him at home in his final years, but it was mainly my mother and myself, nobody else in the family stepped up, not my sister, nieces, nephews, aunts or uncles, everyone else just forgot him
My paternal grandmother we lost to Alzheimer’s, and it was absolutely heartbreaking as well.
Be with your loved ones for as long as you can, even if they don’t seem to know you’re there, your presence will be comforting in those moments of lucidity.
Reading this comment made me start crying again! Ahhhh, this movie hit hard too for me, especially since my grandma (who I was very close to growing up) had alzheimers. We had placed her in a home for a little while but ultimately decided to bring her home instead so she would be with family when she passed. (This was several years ago by now, I still miss her)
My family tried to do that for my Great Grandmother, but my aunts and uncles lived too far away from medical services for her and my Grandparents, who raised me, eventually were unable to help her. Helping her from her bed to her wheelchair became too much, and I was still to young to try taking over. So, we sent her to a home a couple of hours away, and tried to visit every month, though we couldn't manage every single month. She didn't have anything like Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, just diabetes and old age, but I wish I could've supported her more...
I'll never forget my 4 year old nephew dramatically shouting *"Nnaaaoooooo!"* in the cinema when it was revealed that Ernesto was the baddie 😂😂 ~ he is half Bolivian and bilingual and was sooo excited see a little boy that looked like him - now he pays the ukulele like a little pro! He also sang Remember Me at the wake for my mother, his grandmother. We all f*cking *sobbed* but he kept going, even though he was crying his little eyes out. He's such a special kid.

My favorite fact about this movie is that every time Miguel plays the guitar, is finger placement is correct. The animators learned to play guitar just to animate playing one correctly
I heard that this movie was allowed to be shown in theaters in China even though they normally don't allow depictions of an afterlife (or so the story goes), but then the officials screening the movie bawled their eyes out and approved it because the story was so moving.
And skeletons/bones. For example for World of Warcraft they had to cover the undead characters’ exposed bones. So I’m actually pretty surprised this passed.
Día de los Muertos is THE tradition here in Mexico. Entire towns existence revolve around this date, it is that serious. Watching the world fall in love with our culture has been a privilege and fills me with so much pride. Thank you for appreciating such a precious and sacred tradition

This movie hits me way harder. My grandma had dementia for over 3 years and passed 2 years ago. It ment a lot to me when it first came out and it means as mutch to me now. So so glad I get to watch you react to it

The two things that still get me every time is the line "know that I'm with you the only way that I can be" and Coco's arm around her daughter at the end.
That shot of spirit!Coco with Mamá Elena there at the end is what *really* opens the floodgates for me, every time. Remember Me tends to get all the glory, but the entire ending with Proud Corazón is my favourite part. I absolutely adore this film and its depiction of the afterlife.
Niall gives himself so much grief over thinking that Ernesto is Miguel's grandad when it's not his fault. The movie practically telegraphs that message to the audience in that first quarter of the story. You're not dumb bud 😭
When Coco came out, my abuelito (grandfather) was diagnosed with cancer. By the end of the move I was curled up into the fetal position in the cinema sobbing uncontrollably. I was inconsolable, because it hit me that my abuelito was going to die. And I wouldn't see him again someday. I knew, deep down I knew, but Coco was like a gentle way of having me come to terms with it. I couldn't watch Coco for awhile after my abuelito passed. When I did, I cried even more than before, but it was healing. It's one of my favorite movies to this day. And I owe so much of my healing through my grief because of it. Coco is such a wonderful movie, and I love it so dearly. I'm so happy you watched it as a mexican myself. Thank you ❤
Watched this movie with my mum, and she cried at the end. My mum NEVER cries. Like, EVER. I had only seen her cry ONCE before and that was for real life, not the movies.

I scrolled a while and I didn’t see any comments about it, apologies if it’s a repeat, but Dante is a special breed of dog that’s ANCIENT (dating back at least 4 thousand years) and highly revered by ancient Aztecs.
The breed is called Xoloitzcuintli or “Xolo” for short. They were a huge part of Aztec culture and were considered guides that would lead you to the afterlife. It was such a nice touch that was added to the film!
What makes me cry super hard is at @32:31 music actually does help people with dementia so his music is actually healing his family 😭🩷
As someone who worked with dementia patients (and went thru a lot of training where we were instructed to utilize music when possible), I can confirm this!
I was with one client for a year and a half and I sang “Good Mornin’” from Singin’ in the Rain to them every morning. I’d also sing other songs for them and sometimes they’d sing along with me! Not only did we make lovely, peaceful memories together, but it really did help them. In the entirety of my time with them, they only forgot who I was ONCE (it was shortly before they passed). I’d also sing their favorite lullaby when they had nightmares. Singing that lullaby now feels like a hug from a dear friend.
Music, and all it can do, truly feels magical. It connects us in a way that nothing else really can.

My mom’s favorite mariachi song was “La Llorona” - the one that Mama Imelda sang. My mom passed away years ago. And when I saw the movie in theaters and Imelda starting singing it? Yeah, I totally lost my shit. Cried and cried and cried.
When I was in high school I really wanted to become a music therapist for this exact reason. I remember in the beginning of sophomore year, we watched a video as a break during band camp. I will never forget it. The video showed an elderly man in a wheelchair. He was looking down at the floor and wasn't moving at all. When his children tried to talk to him, he wouldn't respond.
A music therapist came in the room and started playing popular music from his 20s and 30s. Over the course of one song, he looked up at everyone and started dancing (within his ability). He started singing along. When it ended, he looked at his daughter, said her name, and started telling her about a memory he had with that song. The daughter started crying because her father hadn't recognized her in years.
I knew then that I wanted to help people. I'm not a music therapist, but i work in Healthcare all the same. I'll never forget that video❤
My paternal grandfather was a big Frank Sinatra fan. Towards the end of his life, he started to forget who we were. Every visit, it took him a while to remember his grandkids and great grandkids. But put on 'My Funny Valentine' and it was like winding the clock to thirty years ago.
Basically that scene with Coco remembering her dad *fucked me up* when i watched this movie. Cheers for that, Pixar!
As a mexican I can tell you that I clearly remember when I went to the cinema to see it, almost all the people were crying.
Fun fact, I lost my mom in 2014, and when I watched this movie it made me cry so bad that my dad agreed to pay for my therapy! One of my favourite movies of all times.

I love your reactions, I can count with the fingers in one hand how many honest reactors I've seen, when you notice the emotion is real and not faked or exagerated for the views, and I think you are one of those. Even tho I lost my grandma 7yrs prior to the release of this movie, this movie and specially the scene of coco remembering hit me like a ton of Bricks. I took my daughter to see this on a mommy-daughter movie date when she was maybe 4…? I had no idea what to expect and I was in absolute BITS sobbing in that theater and clutching my very confused child by the end 🤣
Fun fact, all the chords and notes in the animation are accurate to what's being played. For instance, when he holds the guitar after shining the musician's shoes (before Abuelita intervenes) Miguel plays a D chord.

Interesting fact about alebrijes, they are a recent addition to Mexican folklore. An artist in the '30s or '40s had a vivid dream of colorful, fantastical creatures and set about depicting them in his art.
Celts loving and respecting Mexican culture is always my favorite thing. I watched this movie with my great grandma to embrace our culture together and seeing non Mexicans feel those same deep connections we got from this movie is a blessing. Thank you for making this video❤
I remember this being the first Pixar movie that had me full-on HEAVING with tears coursing down my face; such a beautiful story, touching on some of the most diffucult moments in a family's life... God, it ruins me every time; i was crying with you the whole time!

What I find touching about Mamá Coco remembering Hectór through the song, is there have been studies about music having an immense, positive effect on dementia patients. So the song and music was possibly the best thing for not only Coco remembering Hectór, but improving her symptoms before her death.
This movie hits me even harder after my boyfriend passed. dia de los Muertos is such a beautiful and honoring celebration of those who are no longer with us ❤
To answer your question, it is pretty accurate portraying the "día de los muertos" some towns specially has their graveyards all decorated with those flowers (its believed that they lead the way from the afterworld to the land of the living as it shows you the path to your family) a lot of food (the ofrenda) they do parades and so on. It's truly a day of celebrations. As for the family portray, I'd say its pretty accurate as well, more so in big families that lives on the country side or little towns, not so much with families in the cities but we do have a strong sense of family in general. The most accurate thing there is for sure the chancla (the shoe the abuela throws at Dante), it is a weapon here to raise kids here in Mexico (kidding but not really)
PS: Dante´s breed is called Xoloitzcuintli and it is believed that help souls in their way to afterlife (Mictlan), so that was a pretty cool detail that they did with Dante. Anyway, loved the reaction

I love this movie so much 😢 I rarely rewatch newer Disney movies but this one hit so hard. My grandma died in 2017 and then watching this...I can't help but cry so hard everytime Miguel sings with Coco 😭 it instantly became one of my favourite Disney movies ever!
Coco is such a brilliant film. And music absolutely does work like that! I'm studying music therapy and have worked with people with dementia, and if you find a song people connect with, it's beautiful to see them come alive again.
"Remember Me" always makes me cry. And the animation and cultural elements were so great. A brilliant movie.

I’m a teacher. In October, my class studies Day of the Day and we finish the unit by watching this film. Every year I have played this film, I have ugly cried with my students. Definitely one of my favorites! My recommendations for you are Up and Elemental ❤
When I first saw this movie I was a very naive American who had just started dating an amazing man from Mexico. 7 years later and we are happily married and I have fully integrated Mexican culture into my life and am so happy for it. They are truly a beautiful people, and I'm so glad to be apart of their world 😭

I love that they have a very "blink and you miss it" nod to who is really Coco's father: The guitar. It has the same golden tooth and everything as Hector has but largely goes unnoticed.
I have zero Mexican ancestry, but Dia de Los Muertos is probably the most meaningful holiday for me. The idea is so beautiful.
My mother died just over 10 years ago, but she's still here with me, in my heart, as are my father, several friends, my dog....being dead hasn't diminished my love for them. And the tradition reminds me to reflect on all my ancestors I never met, but whose names and stories I know, including great-great-grandpa Alexander Murrsion from Peterhead, Scotland (he was a cobbler!). I've come to learn that Scots hate it when Americans with Scots ancestry try to claim some affinity with Scotland, so just hate me now. I"m not a Scot, but I'm proud of my peeps who were, and I hope to make it to Scotland someday to check it out. Maybe I'll even meet you!
I see Coco, I click. No questions asked. Regardless of culture, this is simply a great movie, through and through. With a tremendous twist. Pixar at its absolute best. Everyone always has the sob attacks. That scream at 25:17 made my day. A punch without a punch being present 😂

This movie was made with actually great reasearch, as a Mexican I can tell you that "Día de Muertos" is a huuuuge deal, a very special and colorful date. And even though it is quite different in every part of México, the representation they give in the film (based on how this day looks in the states of Michoacán and Oaxaca), is overall pretty accurate ✨

15:58 Fun Fact: If you look closely at Héctor’s photo, you’ll notice that just like Miguel, he has a dimple on one side of his face when he smiles, but not the other. 😊
18:03 If you look carefully at this scene, you’ll notice that there’s 2 lights shining on Héctor as he’s explaining the final death, and the way memories work in this world. One is shining uninhibited upon him (resembling Coco being the last one who truly remembers him), while the other is restricted (ironically by the bars of a cage) from shining on him completely (resembling Miguel being unable to pass on his memories of Héctor because he didn’t know him in life). This is a cool little foreshadowing technique (using background elements as foreshadowing) that animators like to sneak in sometimes during production, and I think this one is particularly clever. ❤
26:01 don’t know if anyone’s mentioned it yet, but during this scene, they had the real-life daughter of Héctor’s voice actor (Gael García Bernal) do the voice/singing for baby Coco, so it’s a real father/daughter duo singing this version of Remember Me. 🥲❤️

I have lost 3 family members to dementia (so far... I'm pretty sure my mother has it too but she refuses to see a doctor) and this film makes me bawl my eyes out every time! But I also love that it's scientifically accurate. Music is one of the last things we forget, and playing it, singing it, listening to it helps bring dementia-sufferers "back" for a little while (like how Coco remembered her own daughter after Miguel sang the song).

Man this movie kills me every time. My grandad has dementia and it’s the worst disease ever, so cruel. Play him old time music from the 50s and he becomes so animated, clapping along and singing. Music is so special. This film makes me fully ugly cry without fail.

The yellow/orange flowers are Cempasuchil(the name comes from the Nahuatl word Cempohualxochitl), in English Aztec Marigold, one must put them on the altar and draw a path with it's petals from the entrance of the home to the altar so your deceased loved ones find their way to it, they are also used to decorate the tombs of loved ones and families gather around them to have picnics with the dead. On the altar one must place dead loved ones photos, stuff they enjoyed and loved and favorite food, mexican traditional sweets, papel picado(artisan perforated tissue paper flags), sugar skulls, pan de muerto (bread of the dead a.k.a sweet butter bread), etc.
The dog is a Xoloitzcuintle, an ancient dog breed, they are said to guide the dead to the underworld. If you treat a Xoloitzcuintles bad, they can deny your entrance to the underworld. Some Xolos are born with coat and some hairless. I actually have a Hairless Xolo and a coated Xolo. ❤
The alebrijes, the colorful monsters, are fairly new to mexican tradition but they are said to ward of bad spirits.
Chorizo is Mexican spiced sausage, it is eaten in tacos or as breakfast with eggs, very yummy.
El grito is a joyful scream mariachis do sometimes.
The songs Mama Imelda sings is called "La llorona" and is a classic song about a women's ghost who mournes her children.

I’m soooooo glad I never saw Coco in theaters. When I watched it at home I had to pause for 20 minutes to cry after Remember Me the last time. Like in the theater the movie would have just kept going, I’m not emotionally stable enough to have survived that.
Every single time I watch "Coco" I start sobbing when Miguel begs Coco not to forget Hector and I can't stop until well into the song "Proud Corazon." I can't help it. Coco reminds me SO MUCH of my late grandmother (she didn't have dementia but she did have a stroke very shortly before she died and it made her lose half her English and made her . . . not her anymore.)
