Brave is a 2012 American animated fantasy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The film was directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman (in the former's feature directorial debut), co-directed by Steve Purcell, and produced by Katherine Sarafian, with John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, and Pete Docter serving as executive producers. The story was written by Chapman, who also co-wrote the film's screenplay with Andrews, Purcell, and Irene Mecchi. The film stars the voices of Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters, Robbie Coltrane, Kevin McKidd, and Craig Ferguson. Set in the Scottish Highlands, the film tells the story of Princess Merida of DunBroch (Macdonald) who defies an age-old custom, causing chaos in the kingdom by expressing the desire not to be betrothed. When Queen Elinor (Thompson), her mother, falls victim to a beastly curse and turns into a bear, Merida must look within herself and find the key to saving the kingdom. Merida is the first character in the Disney Princess line to be created by Pixar. The film is also dedicated to Pixar chairman and Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs, who died before the film's release.
Brave is Pixar's first film with a female protagonist, and the first one animated with a new proprietary animation system, called Presto. Originally titled The Bear and the Bow, the film was first announced in April 2008 alongside Up (2009) and Cars 2 (2011). Chapman, who had just wrapped up work as a story artist on Cars (2006), drew inspiration for the film's story from her relationship with her own daughter. Co-directing with Andrews and Purcell, Chapman became Pixar's first female director of a feature-length film. To create the most complex visuals possible, Pixar completely rewrote their animation system for the first time in 25 years. Brave is the first film to use the Dolby Atmos sound format.[8] The filmmakers created three original tartan patterns for three of the four clans in the film. Patrick Doyle composed the film's musical score.

Also, it was so heartwarming seeing you enjoy the representation, as a latina Encanto is the closest an international movie has done it for me, Coco is second, because it's more specifically Mexican/Central American, and I'm South American, so even though I feel kinship with them irl, it's not the same. Got it in one. All the skills Merida was learning was to ensure that everyone, even her own husband, would show her proper respect and defer to her authority. Even if she and her husband never fall in love, he would never be able to put her down because she has an equal, if not higher, standing than him. If not love, then at least plenty of respect. Which is why Elinor saw it as no big deal and not the end of the world

I took a little, elderly Scottish woman named Maria to see this in a small theater, here; in Jacksonville. We came out of the theater, and every little girl swarmed her, wanting to talk to Merida; thinking that was her story. Maria was so happy to have the attention of all those little girls, it made her cry. It was an honor to spend the day with her. The movie was all the energy she had, but, when I dropped her off at her apartment in the senior living building, I bet she went straight to sleep and dreamt well of home, and that lake of little girls.

I absolutely loved it when one of the suitor's clans were called the "McGuffins."
A McGuffin was old Hollywood film-making slang, made famous by Alfred Hitchcock.
A "McGuffin" was something that served no purpose in a film, other than to move the plot along to the next point.

These blue lights in the swamp are called "Irrlichte" in geman which means "light that leads astray" and you are warned to never follow them for they lead to the other world /death.
In reality they are gases from the wet ground which burn in a small flame when getting in contact with air. But it is allways better to not follow them, cause they don't lead a safe way necessarily.

From what little we got to see of all of their personalities he seemed to be the most sensible in a way that I could see him knowing and understanding who Merida is (strengths, weakness’, and eccentricities a like) and appreciating them all rather than trying to change her into something she isn’t.

Even though Young Dingwall was on the sweeter side, he just wouldn’t have been able to have the character to lead. That’s what I get from him. He wouldn’t be able to keep up with Merida.
With young McGuffin, it’s clear that he is good tempered, and treats Merida as an equal. And from what we’ve seen, he acknowledges and respects her feelings. And when Push comes to shove, I feel like he can DEFINITELY have to fight back if he had more experience leading the Clan as well.
Even though I liked how Merida at the end is not focused to have a guy at her side. Young McGuffin seems to be the best match for her as a love interest. She would teach him to be firm and fight back. He would be the calm after her storm.

When I first watched Brave with our daughter and the Mackintosh first appeared, had I been drinking something I would have spit it out…and as the show went on, uncovering his and his son’s special personalities? I called up my sister (yes, during the movie, we were watching it at home,) and told her, “OH, MY GOD, MICHELE! YOU HAVE TO WATCH BRAVE THIS INSTANT!”
She is single without children and asked me why I thought that. I just said, “I will pester you about this until you watch it. That’s a fact. And when you do, you will know EXACTLY WHY I insist that you watch it.”
She did watch it, and immediately called me while she was still watching it and said, “OH, MY GOD! KATHY! TTHE MACKINTOSH IS DAD!!!”😂😂😂💯 and, to be honest, his son was also perfectly descriptive of our dad…vain, highly competitive, short temper, explosive anger, dubious of everyone else’s intentions, basically narcissistic…
Ok…I am a U.S. American. My dad’s family were INSANE, and super proud of their Scots ancestry…I mean, my folks told me not to let my grandparents know that I was babysitting for a Campbell family in the 1980’s kind of insane…(not meaning to be disrespectful, just, why would I be talking to my grandparents about babysitting gigs? We lived 500 miles away from them.)
