- Floating a Shower for Tile --- Grandpa Bath Episode 6
In this episode I show how to float a shower for tile installation. Floating is one more step in the preparation of the shower in order to make the walls plumb, flat, square and strong.
For a more detailed video on floating and over 1 hour of instruction, watch this video: • Learn how to FLOAT! Ti...

I have never seen someone make their own float strips, EVER you are the Dude.
well they do make redwood lathing strips.
I cancelled my contractor and did my own shower with help of videos, it turned out perfect, sure it takes more time than a pro but sometimes that’s a good thing because I know it is done perfect with no shortcuts to cut down on time, it was much easier than I expected and I make 1500 a day doing some for others now
Yea sure
I did my own also after a Bad Kitchen contractor I had to finish that myself and do the Bathroom. I was a auto tech for many many years so I am very mechanically inclined. All these videos helpedso much it isn't funny . Thanks so much for sharing your skill with all of us.
i did my own roof because there were so many shitty roofing contractors that didn't know what they were doing. so i watched a few youtube videos, did my own roof, and now im making big bucks doing roofs for other people!
Couple of years star leaking for suremateurs...
This trade is so great. I'm 6 months into tile as a helper . I have carpet and vinyl experience but learning about showers and watching guys who know more demonstrate better techniques is so enamering for me. Thanks Isaac
Really appreciate your attitude towards hard work. The trades just are not promoted enough. Physically demanding but rewarding in so many ways.
Remember! Immigration has cut a deep hole in the tile contractor's and tile setter's earnings. I watched it happen. From when I was this worker's age and I was still young like him.
Until today. There was a time in 1988 when I would not have left the house unless I knew that I'd make at least $200/day and often $300/day. Then both the conservatives (who love the cheap labor and leftists (who love their cheap cause) conspired to ruin the American worker. Meanwhile referring to all who oppose open borders as 'racists".
I have never met a pro-immigration worker who has lost a good paying love these college leftists have always been very generous with other peoples' money.
Hard work that's why we watch you on CZcams no more real man anymore thank you tellalievison
Tried and true, northern cali style! Love your content. 916 represent 😎
There is WAY more skill involved in this job than flipping over a tire. This work is amazing. I am preparing for a DIY bathroom remodel, and this channel is like a gold mine.
Same.
Damn you take the saying “you’re only as good as the trades you’re working around,” and throw it in the trash! A un level wall out of square and you’ve made it perfect, love it
As a retired remodeling contractor, Most people have no idea how hard it is to find a professional like you, some people do still have enough pride to take care of their clients the way you do, GREAT JOBS, HAPPY CUSTOMERS, JOBS THAT LAST, Quality people are hard to find, You sir are amazing !!!
Man, you're going to inspire me to get back to floating my walls again. I've been doing tile for 28 years now and for the first 18 I floated all my walls and floors. I miss the days of being able to set the gauge on my cutter or saw and make all of my cuts at one time. Keep up the excellent work.
You have a great passion for floating and tiling my friend. Always an inspiration braddah Issac
Much respect for you and the guys on the west coast floating walls.
i've been installing for 6 years and have felt confident in my work but you make me feel like a novice. Always pushing to be better :)
So glad to see your back to floating walls and pans again. It’s the only way I’ve done it for 20 years. I tried the WEDI system and the Laticrete system once each and I can float a shower faster and have a better enclosure.
I would just recommend getting a air staple gun that shoots 1”x1” staples. Turn the gun sideways and Staple your metal lathe every 8” up the studs side ways.
So...less than novice here🤣 if you put the durarock up that's waterproof, all you have to do is tape and thin set your joints?? Float? And then tile? No need to hydro band over the float??
float and set a 3 wall in a day. Float and finish at noon and then stack the 4x4s. Thinset really bites into the wet mud.
The Best Shower System, Old school will last 30 years, this was awsome.
Love the pride you take in your work man. Can really tell you enjoy what you do. Respect.
Manual work is great! I’m 60 and love the work out on a house renovation. I’ll try floating a shower wall on my bathroom addition.
Thanks for your great CZcams videos. Love learning new things a getting a great workout.
Craftsmanship in the trades is still alive. You're inspiring the next generation of craftsman. That's very admirable Issac, keep it going bro.
This video and floating shower was the best video I've ever seen.. You displayed a shower job in my eyes that guaranteed 100% success. 1000% better than Kirby shower materials.
Fantastic workmanship !! You are a great mentor and I hope that you may inspire some young people not only on your work ethic but also your positive mindset. Well Done !!
Awesome video. Answered all my questions about the relative advantages of doing a mud job vs tiling over board. Thanks for sharing!
Flouting is old but reliable and makes it perfect 👍🏽 💪
Hard work for sure. That's what I was thinking watching you do it.
Appreciate the vids, knoweldge and honesty! If I was in your area, I'd hire you! Keep up the great work!!
Much respect. I have infected muscles, myocitis, and couldn't do this in a million years. So much respect for what you do.
So you need to make it all about you?
He's right about the no gym philosophy, people spending money to work out, when you get more out of a labor intensive job all while getting paid. It's one major reason I went from banking and law firms to construction work, and the level of stress relief you get is way better than working in white collar jobs.
Everyone has an opinion on blue collar vs white collar jobs. I’m 26 and make almost $100k a year at my white collar job. Full benefits, air conditioning etc. Blue collar jobs are back breaking work, sweaty, sometimes unsafe. Breathing in dust and fumes working on your knees and bending at your back. A gym membership is literally $20 a month.
A hard labor job is nothing like going to the gym, that’s the reason many people who work hard manual labor still go to the gym.
@@mlyniecm if you're out of shape yes, true for half of what you said, but if you're proactive and staying healthy and happy where you work and using it as a mode of gaining experienced muscle, getting a workout, then you're getting fit and making your body stronger. Unless you can't think right or process everything correctly and are working in a risky manner and harming your body. Saying that hard work or labor intensive work is "nothing" like going to the gym is an exaggeration or just nay saying, but yes the gym is almost an extra. I do it. Just to be healthier and look healthier.
Wise men always tell you "the lazy and the ones not wanting to work hard will always get hurt because their body isn't ready for intense labors, and they'll end up working harder to makeup what they avoided as a youth", its why people are more likely to get hurt when they hate their job.

Show me something where you made anywhere near 100k and I’ll quit my job right now and come work for you .
You’re talented AF. None of that is easy, but well worth it.
Love that you got passion in your work brother👌🏽
This reminds me of my days floating walls and floors. A lost trade. Great work Man!!!
I would just like to thank you for your videos.I'm going to be doing pretty much the exact same type job.I also have to remove a tub.The biggest difference is that my window is on the same wall only that wall is all concrete block. You're informative meticulousness was worth the subscription. It'll come in handy when it comes to my brother attempting shortcuts that could make the job a nightmare.Thank you again!
Very nice, very impressive. You do an excellent job. Grandpa can rest easy knowing he hired the right man to repair his bathroom.
Thanks I started tiling easy work a few years ago and I like learning how this is done.
Preparation is all. It's a nice feeling to come back for finish and everything is how it should be. At that point, it's fairly simple.
I really enjoy learning with Isaac. As a general contractor not a tile guy I want to know everything. When my tile guy says this or that I can ask or say intelligent things. Isaac has been invaluable
Love your work dude, very clear and concise, I learnt heaps, and your finish quality is superb.
I respect what you are saying. I work at physical things and I'm always happy to get paid to work out. A big part of our population has been brainwashed into thinking that physical work is a bad thing and then they pay to work out at the gym.
beautiful. the wall is perfect. the stabila at the end was correct. Never stop showing the stabila levels
You make It look so easy man. I remember when I started to learn the trade 15 years ago in Phoenix AZ. I did hundreds of showers like that and yes, it is hard and tedious work but at the end it pays to have perfect walls, tile goes so smooth and fast.
Cerveza Torres i
Awesome! Thanks for your videos. Great work and explaining how to do everything!
Glad to see a professional
You, sir, are a true craftsman.
Milwaukee M12 stapler is a life saver. Have been using mine for lathing showers for the last 1.5 years and works perfect.
You make that look so easy. Nice job Isaac.
Thanks for sharing the how to. I might try this on my next shower install.
This was awesome! Such a brilliant and simple method for plumbing the walls with those float sticks. I've learned so much from your videos!
Great job. I enjoy your videos. Been in the trades for many years. You have skills. Keep up the good work.
Your type of work ethic is not so common anymore. Hard work humbles you. I am responsible for alot of younger men who just don't have what it takes to work hard. I try my best to teach them like you teach us. Thanks for the video.
i think it depends on the world your in ;). in my world of business its the other way around. very hard to get to older guys to work and not affecting the younger hard working guys with that mentality
@@Timberjagi I can see what you mean
A total body workout that's better than crossfit and look what you have when done! Learning so much from these video's. Har work never hurt nobody. Great video.
I’m done boarding... I love that you used the waterproof boards then float over. No paper and scratch saves time. I’m building my next shower like this. Thanks Bro!
It may save time, but when he is done, you tap on the walls and they're going to be hollow, the wire was not nailed, they're going to start to separate, tiles will start cracking with time.
Your work is awsome man. I'm really learning alot by watching your videos. Keep em coming please
Good video. Took me back to whin I was a helper before any of the just add water premixed mud. I to have always used a drill to mix it up. Definitely old school either way
Pride in your work is a lost art today. Nice job !
Yes! Thank you!
Lovely stuff. Its is all in the prep as we say in London.
as a doc, watching you bend your knees when applying that mud was 👌👌👌👌👌
Great job. Truly a lost art today.
The flash backs of walls falling due to too much water ,or humidity. You do good tile. You are a good dude. Rock on .
I vibe with this guy. This is def a workout and i get joy out of doing this
Thanks Tile Coach. In my case i'm not against hard work. I am against doing it wrong and having to tear down and do it again. But, thanks to your vids I'm fairly confident I can do this install now. Thanks
Like frosting a cake. Only I don't put sticks in my cakes. Love that you give a shout out to other contractors that do good work.
Your the man love watching you videos and work..your the best out there and learning daily love the trade for sure
As always great video and awesome work… thanks for taking the time
Unbelievable workmanship.
Awesome job , learn a little bitt more every time I watch your video ,God Bless you.
Hello my name is Daniel and I live in the Sacramento as well. I love your videos. The hard work and skill is amazing
Thumbs up brother like that old school hard work.
Good Job!! I am looking forward to the next video!!!
Just, WOW! GREAT WORK.
That is awesome. Great job. There is a lot of money in hard work.
Right on there is something to learn from us all thanks .
One thing I learned from this video is How I can save a bunch of money on float strips I usually just buy them but they always suck and fall apart thank you Mr. Isaac
Brother that is done right!! Good stuff!!!!
Come to Texas. I need my shower done. You do much more work than any contractor I’ve ever seen. Fly down here. I want you to do mine!
When you rip long pieces of wood on your tablesaw, try flipping the workpiece end for end a little after 3/4 the way through the cut. It's a little easier to manage on a portable setup like yours and your can tell if your blade is running square. Wish I could float walls like you. Great video
How about a stand for your saw???
A great job....nicely done.
Hire a old timer. Plaster
Learn a few tips/tricks
I had one years ago.
He floated the wall all by hand.
Done and perfect.
1st day he worked for me he said.
Do you want it perfect or?
I said perfect.
I watched him when done I took a level. Spot on perfect.
Learned so much him
California C54 style! Love it.
Great job!!👍🏽
Really good work. Thank you.
Respect the hard work my man
Old school style, alot of work that will last a long time for years and years to come.
That my man is a beautiful float job!
Hello, Give the Milwaukee 12v stapler a look. I really like mine and it takes the work out of stapling. I use monel or stainless for most of my work. Enjoy your videos even though I am just a DIY er when it comes to it. Take care. Doug
Great information!
Well done! No wall floating here in NJ.. I screed my walls with thinnest and or a patch material prior to tile setting, nice and flat but still not a mud floated wall.
This dudes a total badass.
Great tutorial!
At the beginning he rips a 2x4 to make strips of wood 1/4" x 2" wide. I buy yard sticks at Home depot, Lowe's or Stine's for these. A lot easier and at the price of 99 cents a piece, cheap! And you can also use them to measure things!!!! haha
I use the thin ones 1 / 16x2 I buy sticks at stone places at the price of $ .25 cent cheap!!! Hahaha 😁
What's the metal straight edge tool he's using? Is that a metal screed tool able to be purchased?
you're the epitome of how America was founded--hard work never killed anyone.
Your making that look so easy lol. You have impressive skill
Another good video, Isaac! Bro, you gotta get on the Wedi system. Solves ALLLL the problems
Isaac you are a true craftsman in your work , but it's a lot of effort for us older guys to mix up and sling all of that mud. Just my opinion, but again your work is top notch:)
Thanks, Coach!
Excelente trabajo 👏 amigo muy profesional
You are really a pro !
Amazing skill!
Thanks for the good tips coach
Amazing work
The prep work needed to lay tile is labor intensive. You are right skip the gym and come work with my brother and I for two days to really feel the burn especially when you have three pallets of tile and going up to second and third floor. Like you, we love what we do
Great job.
That ardex 8 plus 9 looks good. I'm gonna try it....I been using ardex thinsets and I have likd it.
I just did my shower in membrane and then found your video.
I am kicking myself I did not find you sooner.
As I probably going to have to float the wall to fix all the built up seams.
Great job bro !!!
