The quality on Netflix doesn't even matter because it just auto selects them. You can't change it manually. So sometimes you just have to watch your show all blurry and wait until it randomly changed back to hd.

I think that Arcane split the difference pretty well, releasing 3 episodes at a time, which meant you could get the feel of the binge without watching the whole season, and it allowed for this kind of a social element that you describe here.

Apparently 5-7 year olds going on their “first errand alone” is actually a bit of a cultural right of passage in japan. Nearly eveyone has a “first errand” like the show and when you see a little kid on an errand it’s just normal to cheer them on and help them. Ironically this is the marvel/Disney structure. They release shows at one episode a week to get an entire weeks worth of theories and social discourse and it works to make these shows way more popular then they otherwise would be. I personally enjoy it as it makes the time commitment much easier to only 40min a week to stay up to date. Netflix is really the only streaming company not doing this model anymore. Think about The boys, AHS, any HBO show, etc.

I think netflix's downfall started when they completely changed their model and stopped being a library of collected shows/movies from everywhere. Once studios got into the streaming game and took their ip off netflix, it pretty much put all of the pressure on netflix to pump out banger originals constantly otherwise there was really nothing there for people to watch. That worked for a while with stuff like stranger things and squid games, but if that ever stopped they would be in trouble and now they are. Combine that with jacking up prices and cracking down on sharing passwords and its a recipe for disaster

I feel it’s not that there aren’t good shows anymore, we’re just oversaturated with content. It’s hard to keep up with shows when they’re scattered across 10 different streaming services. Also, shows like GoT, walking dead, lost, etc. didn’t really have any competition during their time. But now you have multiple shows available for each genre.

    • @bh_quicksilver251

I've seen other people make this argument, about missing the "monoculture", and I'm gonna be honest, I think a big part of it is just our general tendency as humans to cling to the familiar and resent change. We might've lost having that show everyone watches, but we've also had a lot more stuff that's willing to take risks and go interesting places, precisely because they're not trying to be for everyone (kinda like how some people complain about "movies sucking lately", while only watching superhero movies).
It's also interesting looking back at what the narrative was when the monoculture was at its strongest, and read the opinion pieces of the time, complaining about how mass entertainment was often a dumbed down version of the world that tended to flatten out everything, and how much better things were when we weren't all "forced" to all consume the same things, to see that we as people tend to be resentful of change and create pasts in our minds that might seem rosier than they were in reality.

I feel like the last good show Netflix did right was Arcane, and I assume that was more of a contractual thing with Riot for the 3 episodes a week instead of all 9 at once. It was the first time (like you said) since GoT that I was talking about a show week to week, albeit a short few weeks, and it was great! left space for some theory talk and excitement to build!

Arcane is often forgot about because it’s ultimately an animated show. All of Netflix’s animation has been really super fucking good up until their bone headed decisions recently. The average person is more into live action dramas, especially for an American audience. They’re the most piloted types of shows currently because of streaming and how people binge-watch. It’s also why there’s less emphasis on animation and surprisingly comedies as well.

@@wtfisggon7251 I was bringing up comedies because they face similar issues like animated shows. They’re super hard to get right, especially at the network TV level because they need as much time to get the formula down. It’s why streaming services are in need of them and why services like Disney+ Star/Hulu, HBO Max and Peacock have excelled so well with them. They have diverse libraries of their sitcoms and can green light them well, but they aren’t the main attraction. That’s been killing Netflix because while they have invested so much into animation and dramas, they rely on licensed sitcoms that aren’t there anymore. The comedy department of Netflix is lacking aside from standup. Netflix was doing absolutely amazing in the animation department but their recent changes at the top might kill them alongside subscription plan changes for the worst.

Genuinely interesting video and comments, thought I'd add to the discussion: Disney's 1 episode a week release is also just a business scheme... There are 10-12 episodes for most shows, and most users are billed monthly (every 4-ish weeks), so by having episodes released weekly, if you're invested in a show, they can milk you for another 2 or 3 subscriptions compared to Netflix's viewing model: I can pay for 1 month and finish as many series as I wanted bc episodes typically drop as whole seasons. And I (and many others I would assume) won't mind waiting a few weeks to get a subscription and binge-watching shows once the whole season (or most of it) is out to try and save a few bucks, there's so many shows/films being release, I'm already years behind, whats a couple more weeks yknow

Also a side note; the Netflix 4K plan used to be a couple bucks more expensive, we have a mobile plan for Netflix which is around $ 2 and we don't have access to HBO Max or whatever other streaming service is being introduced without a VPN.

I agree that it does feel like the model for television has changed as a whole. Though for some shows like "Squid game" or "Mandalorian" I feel like people could watch those as they come out. My personal take is that people choose to not do that because it's easier to just wait until it's all released and then watch it all at once. Whereas with cable TV you couldn't do that easily, sure you could record them with TiVo or another "Show Recording" service but people would generally sit down around the TV when it came time to air the show. Either way, I agree with the sentiment of the model changing, but I think that the people watching have changed more than the shows themselves.

    • @bh_quicksilver251
      @bh_quicksilver251 Před 2 lety +2

But that's not true, people watching haven't changed as much as you are implying. That can be seen by GoT, it was only like 4 years ago, and people watched it every week. @@bh_quicksilver251 That is a fair point, and to that same extent mando came out 3 years ago around the same time, and I know plenty of people that watched it on a weekly basis. But I feel that people in the past 4 years alone have been polarized a lot with politics. And that would also effect companies to produce content that people will incorporate their political bias as to whether or not to watch.
I do think that recently some content have just been dog water. However, in my experience, I know that people are very caught up in the real world and that effects how there isn't a lot of room to talk about shows, let alone watch or try new ones. I also believe that people might just be moving towards watching more livestreams, youtube, or just online videos as a whole, and how that deters companies from making a series that would cost lots of money.
There's also the fact that shows in the past 2 years have done this kind of weird dance with the pandemic. That definitely didn't stop companies from producing shows and series but It might have effected the quality. But that is just pure speculation, well too be honest all of this is just my own opinion and speculation so I guess take it with a grain of salt.
Reading over my comments, I am all over the place. The conclusion is that I think people have changed a bit with politics. However companies have also changed and along with them changing so have the content.
But I mean, HBO Max didn't release until 2020, GoT and a bunch of other shows were all still on TV and thus was just easier to watch on a weekly basis. The era of companies moving to a digital online platform instead of a cable TV one has changed the way people view content.

It feels like to find the 'Good Shows' you have to look for them (especially on Netflix). And unless a show blows up on Social Media, most people aren't going to see that it exist and is good. And the binge model directly makes the time a show is in the spotlight much smaller. So in order to find good stuff you have to search for it actively, which run against the instant gratification that is prevalent currently. So it ends up feeling like everything is trash because there is on average more trash, but it was balanced out by the good stuff being more impactful. But good stuff is less impactful now TBH because you binge it in a day.

I hadn't really thought about it til you brought it up, but I really do miss having shows like Game of Thrones, or Breaking Bad, or even season 1 of The Walking Dead, which my entire friend group would constantly talk about, and theorize over where the show was heading next week. Good times.
I was hoping Wheel of Time, against all odds could somehow, someway, become something special. But even as a book reader I only got like 4-5 episodes in before quitting. Not because it wasn't true to the books (I thought it HAD to deviate to be a good show in 2022), but just because it was not very good at all. And there are no upcoming shows, save for Arcane season 2, that my friends and I are hyped to see.

Personally, I think producers should pick and choose how they should release episodes based on how the story is told. For example, episodic shows like Atlanta do great with a weekly release because it lets each story "sink in". However, if each episode leads into the next, then I think releasing them in groups based on key plot points is the best way to go. The release of all 9 episodes of Arcane split into 3 acts was great bc I always felt content with the episodes that were released while still looking forward to the next act.
Honestly, I know anime has been doing weekly episodes forever, but I really wish they could release some of the episodes in groups, especially when it's a fight. S2 of Demon Slayer was great, but the pacing would have been more enjoyable if they split the fight up by their key moments and showed each group all at once.

@@elephantwaffle5612 I mean kind of. Fire and blood is more of a history book than a biography. Meaning the original series/books were more of POV chapters while fire and blood is a retelling of history from a third party perspective. HBO seemed to shine when they could almost tie the show word for word to the original books, while this new show will just be more of a frame work. We saw what they did with the frame work of "Winds of Winds" and "Dream of Spring".

I'm telling you now Lud, Slime has the actual worst opinions when it comes to art and you should never listen to him lmao. Twin Peaks The Return was amazing, it just went out of its way not to please any single crowd in service of its messages against the glorification of serial killers in TV and general American media. Not a show for everyone, but if you like Twin Peaks then you should definitely give The Return a try, purely because Twin Peaks as a series is too layered to simply judge by one person's word.
I also don't know what Slime is reading, I've pretty much heard only good things about The Returns from people online & in person alike, unless if they are someone who hates Lynch to begin with I suppose.

It's in my top 3 often taking the top spot for best piece of art or media full stop. It is the culmination of Lynch's whole career and just as the original run did 30 years ago completely shifts the medium in ways never done before. It is a goddamn masterpiece.

A weekly model makes sense for tv shows, gives you something to look forward to, and mass releasing episodes just ends up making people binge watch, without actually being able to fully process what’s happening in the story lines.

My expectations for Netflix has Skyrocketed because they let Alice Oseman put her show Heartstopper onto the site. Alice basically had all say with See-Saw productions and Netflix was just a place to put the show somewhere, somewhere that was easily accessible, low cost, and a lot of people already had.
Heartstopper is a phenomenal lgbt coming of age story and was originally a graphic novel, that you can read FOR FREE on webtoons and other place. But the fact that this is on Netflix is great.
I genuinely cried when it finished, and do wish that they released the show weekly, and not all at once. Would have been an amazing 8 weeks, always on that high for the next episode like Stranger things, going back and looking for easter eggs or nods to those years.
But yeah, Netflix kinda sucks but has been good with LGBT representation lately. (Sex Education, Heartstopper, Couple other shows, You get it.)

Literally like no one’s talking about how shows have started to come out in arcs. With 2 or 3 episodes coming out at a time. A lot of streaming services have been messing with how they release shows. It all kinda started around when Arcane was coming out. Which was 3 episodes at a time. Vox Machina I think was 3 episodes a week as well. Literally I feel like Netflix has been kinda killing it with the weirdness they pick to be on their platform. Atleast in that regard. Now how they handle keeping shows and changing prices and all that shit I agree they are kinda all over the place. For me Netflix was/ is the place for Directors and people to do weird things. Which I think over time other streaming platforms have come to adopt as well. Like fuck me I still wish we got Season 3 of The OA. There’s a lot of shows / movies that they release that never really get talked about unless they explode like Bird Box and Squid game and those things end up being pretty mid compared to their other stuff in my opinion at least. All in all I actually think that Netflix is a pretty dope platform that has giving us alot of great shows and movies.

  • @MacheteSquad

On the contrary Netflix really hits it out of the park frequently with its original programs- Stranger Things, Russian Doll, Umbrella Academy, Ozark, Witcher, Big Mouth, Squid Game, the Mike Flanagan miniseries, and so on. They frequently have series that catches a lot of attention, but I think it's correct that it's just the volume of releases, and the fact that it's designed to be binged and set aside, makes it hard to keep in our memory.
Also, Americans do also seem to forget that Netflix is regional, and that makes the service's offerings different in other countries. Netflix really became quite good here in Canada for the longest time, as it didn't have any strong competitors until recently.

I agree I’ve seen people talk about how binging is bad for the social aspect of shows and it’s bad for your experience too since you pretty much forget most of the show when you binged it in a day, most of what happened didn’t stick in your brain so you didn’t get as much enjoyment out of it, and then you have to wait a year for the next season and you don’t even remember most of what happened in the last season and the cycle repeats. But don’t forget it only repeats about twice because we all know Netflix will just cancel a show regardless of how good it is or how many people want to see it continued or at least a season to wrap things up

Can definitely feel the quality of Netflix's shows, at least, dropping significantly compared to their earlier stuff with Daredevil etc.
