Funny how Dame Edna has appeared on Australian TV, in theatres and at public events at different times since the late 1950's; even hosting her own interview show for years...... yet in 2023, Americans are losing their minds over drag queens performing in the public arena and even legislating to ban them from the streets and anywhere else that isn't an 'Adults only' environment. Talk about backwards.

Probably for the musical OLIVER! FWIW, Barry Humphries a/k/a Dame Edna was in the original cast of OLIVER! and had a song, 'That's Your Funeral," which was cut for the movie. The character Nancy saves Oliver Twist from villains Bill Sikes and Fagin and for doing so is bludgeoned to death by Sikes. Nancy's big song in OLIVER! is "As Long as He Needs Me."@@andrewclayton4181

As a kid i had no Interest in my father's opera, therefore I know nothing about past famous singers. I'm not sure also that American education is strongly focused on British culture.

Dame Edna used to host a talk show. Made would sit quietly, never said a word, just took the occasional barb of abuse from Edna.
Edna started as an ordinary housewife in the 60s, but passing comments on life in general, became so popular, she earned herself a dame hood. Not for the fainthearted, her comments can be spiky, but always hilarious, and never delivered with malice. A great character.

S/he settles down and an usher enters and whispers in Edna's ear. 9:14 Bless you Ashley. Charles Dickens is a VERY well known English author of the mid C19 (though clearly not to you). But you have most certainly heard of some of his works. A Christmas Carol (Scrooge), Oliver Twist (Please sir I want some more) and A Tale of Two Cities (It was the best of times; It was the worst of times).
His works predominantly centered around highlighting the very real problem of inequity during that period of time, the impoverishment of the under-class by the hand of the upper-class.
He wasn't alone in that pursuit, but he played a part most definitely. And he did it with some finesse, he spoke in a language that both the under-class and the upper-class could understand. And he made a difference for the good, to say the very least!
You are young, I forgive you for that! But you have to recognise Dickens!
And I didn't even study Dickens in school (for shame in hindsight), I did get To Kill a Mocking Bird and An Inspector Calls though! So not so bad!🤷

Once Barry starts making up as Edna, you can only refer to him as Edna, he's been around since the 50's but more well known from around the 70's both he and Paul made characters up from people within their own lives, which is where some of the comedy comes from, Paul married a Portuguese Lesbian and they remained married for about 20 odd years, they were friends and her family wouldn't accept her and it stopped her from being deported it's a long a wild story, which is why his autobiography took three books, which are very interesting, Barry has been married I think 4 times he's a great artist as well as what he's known for and both are equally as funny as themselves and tend not to self edit, they were also friends with Danny La Rue who made drag more acceptable to everyone it was Dan in a frock, but he did a variety of known people in his act, he did characterisations which were never meant to belittle females, many he actually knew and had been friends with, he paved the way for many coming through, he had a manager / partner Jack who kept him in line they were together for many years, but Dan never publicly came out because it was still illegal back when he was a young man in the 1940's onwards and he was also my friend for over 40 years

He had other characters too, one was an over-blown politician. Barry Humphries was never a politician.
He was not transforming his identity over to any of his comedic characters, he did not live his life as them. Dame Edna would be very hurt at the idea that she was a confused man for goodness sakes.
