The reason why he looks and talks the way he does is because he is the exact OPPOSITE of what a cultural attache of Australia should be. He smokes, he's a womaniser, he's a drunk and he drools all down his shirt - in fact he does it so well and maintains a façade of dignity while creating havoc all around him.... He is a hugely clever comedian. He has created in Sir Les Patterson a grotesque caricature of a rough Aussie man who hilariously purports to be highly cultured. It's brilliant. RIP Bazza
Seems to me , as a Kiwi, that the traits you describe are EXACTLY those that an Aussie cultural attache SHOULD have! *winks*
@@martinbynion1589 Norty norty....lol
He came from meeting and drinking with Aussie diplomats, bankers and wankers in Hong Kong during the 80s. I grew up there in the 90s to Aussie parents and he is spot on.
@@martinbynion1589 Agree, just upset the RAN haven't named a replenishment ship after him. Principally stationed in Hong Kong, Singapore, Manila, Bangkok...
Nah mate. The reason he looks and talks that way is because he is PRECISELY what an Aussie cultural attache was in those days. Originally he was satirizing the left -specifically Whitlam's cabinet, nut as time went on he now embodies the right, Abbott & Scummo's cabinet.
I am so pleased you did this,we Australians are mourning this Legend,
RIP Barry xxxx
@@Zero_Ego Yep, very sad.
We lost Sir Les Patterson today he will be very missed a great Aussie thumbs up from Australia what a classic đđŒđŠđșđđŒđŠđșđđŒââïž
Give me a thumbs down....she made men look like Arseholes....that thing made fun of aussie men....it was a girl !!!!
we desperately needed a gentleman like Sir Les to go out in the world and show the world just how sophisticated we Australians are , sadly , the passing of Australian royalty
Barry Humphries did a week as Dame Edna and Sir Les Patterson at a theatre I managed in the early 80's and was fantastic as a performer and a very entertaining, intelligent, educated and cultural man.
RIP Sir Les Patterson, the only honest man in Australia
đą
WTF is that supposed to mean?
Absolute legend never to be repeated the world is a greyer place without Barry Edna and Les
Barry Humphries passed away today aged 89. RIP Barry. You will be missed.
Part of the characther is his drooling lol, once he was on stage, and a good looking girl walked by at the front, he had a mega large sausage down his trousers, and he made it twitch đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
I thought Sir Les drooled because he was always drunk
The joke is, he's supposed to be Australias Cultural Attaché (Representative)? There used to be a joke decades ago that Australia was great but didn't have any culture and Barry Humphries created this character to play up to it! Although coming from Australia, the now 89 year old spent many years, from 1959, in the UK, initially acting, then working on a satirical magazine (Private Eye) and writing comedy scripts for television and film.
You can blame Barry for a few choice Australian words that have now been adopted by the British!
Yea mate , he was a pisser
Why does he look this way? Australians revel in taking the piss out of ourselves. Sir Les was the epitome of the ability to laugh at our own culture, and god bless Barry for making it so. A cultural icon whose death will be a significant loss to Australia's self-image and comedic awareness. We'll miss you.
We will never 4get him! Brilliants not good enuf for Barrie humphreys .im Britain he's iconic and loved by millions your loss is our loss there won't be another when I need cheering up I put sir less on and piss myself laughing over and over again 1 of the funniest genuine man of sheer commanding brilliance and respected by all â€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž
RIP Bazzer.. U made people cry with laughter.
What a legend! For me, Les P. was his funniest character by far.
your reaction to Sir Les and also to Dame Edna is gold................never seen you laugh so much đ€Ł
Sir Les is the Australian cultural attaché
As ambassador he only shows the best of Australia Notice his left trousers leg How excited he is to be on the show đ€đ€đ€đ€
Come on Ash Heâs real
Les Paterson was initially created as a social club secretary who would introduce acts on stage at the club entertainment events. He was basically an archetypal character and represented what many people in Australia would think a social club secretary to be like - permanently drinking, smoking and looking a bit disheveled whilst being full of his own self-importance. The character is essentially a parody of how many people would view Australians - unsophisticated, and lacking in class and culture. Of course, Australians aren't like that at all, but Humphries does a very good job of keeping the illusion alive. The character worked and was, over time, promoted to be the mythical Australian Cultural Attache to the court of St.James in London. He is now the official compare of most of the Dame Edna shows. He's just a male version of the Dame Edna character - very funny, and keeps alive the archetypal Australian Character that many people can still relate to.
Barry Humphries, a true comedian, one of Australia's most loved, admired entertainers; thanks for the laughs, Barry, you are sorely missed by many, RIP mate
Sadly Barry Humphries passed away yesterday 22.04.2023, a true legend of comedy.
Another great Sir Les interview is with Michael Parkinson. Les Patterson on Parky 82. Full interview. You'll laugh even more.
He was such a legend. You could never make these kind of jokes today. Politically incorrect comedy was his bread and butter.
Sir Les is great! Gross but great!!! You're great too, your laugh always cheers me up!!!
Absolute GOLD.... An extremely funny man. RIP Barry AKA Les and Edna..
When I was a kid (and older) there were lots of old blokes like Sir Les around in the suburban Clubs, getting a little taste of power but just an Ocker really.
Sir Les is an exaggerated version and elevated to the political sphere. Lot of political satire in his diatribes plus blue humour (and a large appendage down his trouser leg). Something for everyone đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
I love this character Barry Humphries used to do.....
A true Aussie legend RIP Bazza
One of Sir Les great moments is when he is describing riding in a taxi with one of his lady assistants. When it comes time to pay Sir Les says she flashes the driver her map of Tasmania. For those who don't know what that is Sir Les says Tasmania is a triangular shaped island that's quite bushy. Anyway, the taxi driver then says, "have you got anything smaller?"
Brilliant man Barry Humphries is/was, his autobiography is great, sadly missed on the other side of the Tasman đ
A classic Australian, so glad I got to see one of his last performances. RIP mate.
He looks that way because he is the stereotype of the way the Poms see us and to an extent, the way we see ourselves
Ashley's Review is a good place where I send my regards to the great comedian Barry Humphries. R.I.P. Thanks for making me laugh for a few decades Baz.
The man is a Dadaist at heart. Wonderful humor. RIP Berry
He'll be sadly missed. A truly great Australian.
BTW "Don Lane Show" 1983. Don Lane died 2009. An American who came to Sydney, embraced it and stayed. We loved him, too.
Your love of laughter feeds my soul. Thank you so much!
Ashley. Les looks like he looks because he takes the world by the horns, and, he likes a litre or two of hard booze a day :)
I don't know what I've enjoyed more , your reaction to Barry or your contagious laughter...I started laughing as well and i've seen this cli many times before. I love these kinds of videos, when people discover and react to foreign culture. Sir Humphreys was a comedy legend and managed to have a phenomenal international career with 2 adored and loved characters, that's talent! He will be sorely missed.
Totally disgusting but hilarious Sir Les Pattersonđ
Why do you think he is drooling, for comic effect of course
@@laurielovett8849 As Barry himself said, the dirtier Les is, the more he can get away with.
Ashley, you can see that the actor who played him died recently aged 89. You look like a caring young lady.
Yes, I know. Itâs very sad czcams.com/video/NXGjBkZev0U/video.html
@@AshleysReview He was a genius.

One classic Sir Les line from the 70s was, in reference to a young woman: "Put it in an walk towards me girlie".
I went to four Barry Humphries shows here in Melbourne, where i live, in the 1980's to the 1990's. Humphries died in Sydney in 2023.
Iâm so glad you laughed. Barry Humphries just passed away a few days ago. Check out âDame Edna Everageâ his other character â€
Don Lane was an American who hosted an Australian talk show in the 1970s. This interview happened in 1975 between the dismissal of the Whitlam Government on 11 November and the subsequent election in December, which is why Don is asking the who Sir Les thinks will win the election.
SiR Les was an old school ALP grub. The RSL is the Returned & Services League. Vince Gair was a Roman Catholic ALP Senator who defected from the ALP and formed the original DLP, with a few others, mostly Papists, which did not last long as a party.
Iâm glad you found this funny. And thanks for doing this video. Iâm from the uk and was brought up with this humour. Sir Les is an absolute legend. He will definitely be missed. đAndy uk.
Some people don't realise the Barry played The Goblin King in the Hobbit, his face and voice very clever bit of CGI as with the Dragon Smaug played and voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch.
Dame Edna and Sir Les are iconic, Australians finest RIP Barry Humphreys.
he is a comedian đč actor in fact he so kindness guy
She never noticed his rampaging trouser snake.
This was hillarious , your reactions brighten my day đ
Ashley, watch Sir Les Patterson on the Michael Parkinson show. Pure Gold. He always had Sir Les and Dame Edna on. Best interviews ever.đđđ
Sir Les Patterson ,
Definitely a big boy, he was !
You would have to know the history of UK /Australian relationships to fully understand the dynamic here's.
An Aussie legend.
Hes indulging in the favourite Australian pastime of 'takin the piss'
RIP Sir Les, you will be missed. If you like Aussie comedy, "Norman Gunston interviews Sally Strutters."
Dame edna interviews matt lucas and david williams from little britain is so funny.
This was from the old "Don Lang" show in Australia... Don was an American presenter, beside this he also worked on the ABC (our national free to air broadcaster) He brought over Basket Ball and the NFL, which later FOX grabbed ... I went to two "Supper Bowl" parties that Don Land and the ABC had in Sydney in the late 80's, they gave out "Hot Dogs" and Budweiser Beer. Barry was a brilliant write, comedian and performer.... I'm a Yank who moved here after 9 years US Army as a teacher. He did a fabulous stage play "Sandy Stone", made the rounds around the world as stage and television characters Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson ... his treatment by the comic group in Melbourne was so shameful, as he was a tree master of his craft... he will be missed.
Good that you found Sir Les , this guy was gold !!!!!
Once there were people like this but luckily they are now almost extinct.
Barry Humphries who created him and Dame Edna was a brilliant satirist and intellectual, he will be missed !!
RIP
Australias Politicians deep down hate this Character because it shows up what the Politicians get an un taxed pension 300 to 400 hundred k then they agree to a corporate job laughing in the face of every Australian.
Sir Les has gone to meet Malcolm and Bob in the House of Reps up in the sky.
"Why is he drooling?" I was laughing so much, I was choking,,,
He was a brunken womaniser politician. Very funny. This was a tv show so he had to be tame. On stage he was very rude. A funny guy. RIP Barry. A real Aussie legend
Sir Les Patterson (character) is a grubby ALP MP from the 1970's to last year when he retired, and was like many ALP MPs of the time and was common or from a working class background. The modern ALP now have smarter men and women in Parliament and are in Government in the Commonwealth and all six mainland states as at 2023.
Don Lane died years ago after he returned to New York where he came from. The political scene in the discussion is from the early/mid 1970's. Gough Whitlam was Labour PM for 3 years to 1975 and Bob Hawke a future Labour PM for nearly 10 years from about 1982. They are both dead now.
I was lucky enough to see Barry Humphreys twice. He was hilarious both times. The first time i saw him, he opened with Sir Les. The ushed were instructed, no matter where their seats were, they were to be walked past the stage, where Les would shake their hands and drool over them... Needless to say, we were very early!! He remembered the names of those people, and mentioned them a few times during the show.
At the end, Dame Edna called them up on stage, took one of their shoes, and put it in a box. At the end, he tipped the box over, spilling dozens of shoes and telling them to find their missing shoe!!
Then of cause, he use to hand out Gladiolas to his audience, and for those in the stalls, he had cannons to fire some up to them!! Such a clever man, and the loss of a quick witted person. He immersed himself into his characters. I heard him say that he was often on stage as Dame Rdna, and she would adlib, and he'd think to himself "I wish I'd thought of that .." RIP
He's the Cultural Attache. It's a send up of Australian culture. Drink, and Sheilas.
When he's mentioned in Dame Edna's presence, she spits feathers. She can't stand him. When there is a stage show, they often both make an appearance. Lot of politics in this one, not always so much.
Australian audience, about three weeks after Hawke rolled Hayden, and about a week before the 1983 election. It was a politically passionate time.
Sir Les, Australia's finest.
There are lots of references to 1970's Australian politics in this. Glad you enjoyed it.
Such genius! He got his own name wrong (he said Brian instead of Barry!)đ
An Australian cultural ambassador. The joke is...Australians have no culture, ( except in the fridge , or between the toes). Barry Humphries was a master of character comedy.See Dame Edna Everage also.
RIP Barry you bloody ripper
You did well deriving some amusement from a character who was no doubt a shock to the system for you.
I was told when he appeared in front of an American audience, he was immediately booed off stage!!
6:08... There must have been another drought here in 1983... you weren't allowed to hose your garden or lawn.
8:24... Bob Hawke was our beer drinking prime minister in the 80s.
He's one of two characters of Barry Humphries, the other being Dame Edna Everage.
Hawkie was not just a beer drinker, he held the world record for sculling a yard glass of beer.
Barry Humphries, a true comedy genius. He made the world a far better place, you cant give any greater praise than that, Sorry to hear of his passing, condolences to his family and loved ones.
R.I.P Barry đą
Long before all the Aussie comedians of the present time the amazing Barry Humphries paved the way!! A very quick mind and amazing wit. Dame Edna was my fave character : Sir Les was so revolting đ€ą but there were some blokes like him in real life!! He has said that Dame Edna was loosely based on his own Mum. Oh and Sir Les was based around a very famous politician!!
Have a look at late lunch with Les it hilarious. Are you with me ? No worries. Love your laugh
He became Prime Minister of Australia you know......đ€€
Between Sir Les Patterson and Norman Gunston, we sent Americans into shock.
That North, South joke. How he got away with that back then I don't know! And the hose, buggery one too!
Why is he drooling.. ? Lol Ashley hasnât noticed whatâs dangling down near Lesâs knees.
Sir Les Patterson ...the Australian Cultural Attache to Great Britain and the Court of Saint James ... bbbuuuurrppppp .. ppaarrrpppp...no worries mate ! What a brilliant comedic creation by the late ,great ,cultured Mr Barry Humphries . RIP your original soul . Ps ..Sir Les and Dame Edna Everage are the same person underneath all the makeup and duds .
Now you need some Norman Gunston đ€Ł
Love him!
There are some great Patterson clips on Parkinson. He's supposed to be based on an Australian diplomat he and Bruce Beresford met...
Great reaction, thanks Ash
Sir Les was a product of Barry meeting Aussies in Hong Kong in the 80s. Now not all were like him, just the diplomats and bankers. I was born and raised to Aussies in HK and while 99% of my countrymen I encountered were not Sir Les that 1% were Les, to a tee.
You made me laugh out loud when he said about Dame Edna and laughed, then went on about the drool! Dame Edna was the character he was most famous for, an outrageous 'woman' who was very popular since the 70's. Look it up, you'll have many more shows out of that one character!
What a morning Dame Edna and Sir Les on the same day . Awsome, thanks.
He created the creepy corporate politician character with all the unconscious grubbiness executed really well....
Did anyone - and I mean anyone at all - get that Vince Gair reference? That is a VERY deep Aussie cut!
Like Dame Edna, Sir Les is a character straight from Barries sense of humour.
Basically an important political identity who has never run for office but always holds an important but unnamed political post.
A typical chain smoking drunken slob who is always drooling and with an eye for young women and girls.
Sir Les is everything any country should be embarrassed about within the corridors of power.
The character would be just as funny as a judge, but harder to interview. lol
That'd be the Ash Wednesday fires. Wow.
Sir Les is just like my uncle.
Love your laugh.... Stay happy Gal!
Barry Humphries was a comic genius if you want to review one of his films watch the Adventures of Barry Mckenzie
A great Australian statesman!
The funniest part of this is Australians know Sir Les has a massive 14â weapon of mass seduction and itâs got a mind of its ownđEvery time the camera pans out itâs so obvious I keep waiting for you to notice and when you paused it and cracked up I was sure u saw it but then u said drool again Aghh đthe anticipation is killer itâs like watching a mouse eat cheese of a mouse trap đłđ
"I went to 'Honkers'..." (Hong Kong) LOL
Australians do what Liverpudlians do, shorten words such as Christmas and Electricity (ie.'Crimbo' and 'Leccy'.) Australia must have received a lot of criminals from Liverpool in the early days!
Heâs been to a long boozy lunch. Heâs pissed as a fart and dribbling like a baby. Heâs wearing his lunch.
Sir Les looks the way he looks be because he portraying the ugly Australian. Barry Humphries was a satirical genius.
Sir les Patterson is drooling because he has a medical condition with his tongue, producing excess amounts of saliva. You also did not hear the baby arm jokes, (maybe in another video, you get me?) do some more research... Australia lost more than one great man but also Sir Les & Dame Edna & many more. RIP Barry Humphries we will forever remember the joy you brought to the world.
Great bloke/ Guy Sir Les - I laugh at you laughing at Sir Les - But , the sad thing is , that this week Barry Humphries / Sir Les passed away on 23rd of April 2023 in Sydney Australia . Best wishes Ashley & keep on smiling and enjoy other ones of Sir Les ---- Cheers from the land of "OZ"
No one satirizes Australian crassness like Humphries. Sir Les Patterson is a savage piece of satire. Barry Humnphries is a legend.
