The reason why he looks and talks the way he does is because he is the exact OPPOSITE of what a cultural attache of Australia should be. He smokes, he's a womaniser, he's a drunk and he drools all down his shirt - in fact he does it so well and maintains a façade of dignity while creating havoc all around him.... He is a hugely clever comedian. He has created in Sir Les Patterson a grotesque caricature of a rough Aussie man who hilariously purports to be highly cultured. It's brilliant. RIP Bazza

Nah mate. The reason he looks and talks that way is because he is PRECISELY what an Aussie cultural attache was in those days. Originally he was satirizing the left -specifically Whitlam's cabinet, nut as time went on he now embodies the right, Abbott & Scummo's cabinet.

The joke is, he's supposed to be Australias Cultural Attaché (Representative)? There used to be a joke decades ago that Australia was great but didn't have any culture and Barry Humphries created this character to play up to it! Although coming from Australia, the now 89 year old spent many years, from 1959, in the UK, initially acting, then working on a satirical magazine (Private Eye) and writing comedy scripts for television and film.
You can blame Barry for a few choice Australian words that have now been adopted by the British!

  • @sierrahp

Why does he look this way? Australians revel in taking the piss out of ourselves. Sir Les was the epitome of the ability to laugh at our own culture, and god bless Barry for making it so. Les Paterson was initially created as a social club secretary who would introduce acts on stage at the club entertainment events. He was basically an archetypal character and represented what many people in Australia would think a social club secretary to be like - permanently drinking, smoking and looking a bit disheveled whilst being full of his own self-importance. The character is essentially a parody of how many people would view Australians - unsophisticated, and lacking in class and culture. Of course, Australians aren't like that at all, but Humphries does a very good job of keeping the illusion alive. The character worked and was, over time, promoted to be the mythical Australian Cultural Attache to the court of St.James in London. He is now the official compare of most of the Dame Edna shows. He's just a male version of the Dame Edna character - very funny, and keeps alive the archetypal Australian Character that many people can still relate to.

Don was an American presenter, beside this he also worked on the ABC (our national free to air broadcaster) He brought over Basket Ball and the NFL, which later FOX grabbed ... I went to two "Supper Bowl" parties that Don Land and the ABC had in Sydney in the late 80's, they gave out "Hot Dogs" and Budweiser Beer. Barry was a brilliant write, comedian and performer.... I'm a Yank who moved here after 9 years US Army as a teacher. He did a fabulous stage play "Sandy Stone", made the rounds around the world as stage and television characters Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson ... his treatment by the comic group in Melbourne was so shameful, as he was a tree master of his craft... he will be missed.

I was lucky enough to see Barry Humphreys twice. He was hilarious both times. The first time i saw him, he opened with Sir Les. The ushed were instructed, no matter where their seats were, they were to be walked past the stage, where Les would shake their hands and drool over them... Needless to say, we were very early!! He remembered the names of those people, and mentioned them a few times during the show.
At the end, Dame Edna called them up on stage, took one of their shoes, and put it in a box. At the end, he tipped the box over, spilling dozens of shoes and telling them to find their missing shoe!!
Then of cause, he use to hand out Gladiolas to his audience, and for those in the stalls, he had cannons to fire some up to them!! Such a clever man, and the loss of a quick witted person. He immersed himself into his characters. I heard him say that he was often on stage as Dame Rdna, and she would adlib, and he'd think to himself "I wish I'd thought of that .." RIP

Sir Les was a product of Barry meeting Aussies in Hong Kong in the 80s. Now not all were like him, just the diplomats and bankers. I was born and raised to Aussies in HK and while 99% of my countrymen I encountered were not Sir Les that 1% were Les, to a tee.

You made me laugh out loud when he said about Dame Edna and laughed, then went on about the drool! Dame Edna was the character he was most famous for, an outrageous 'woman' who was very popular since the 70's. Look it up, you'll have many more shows out of that one character!

Like Dame Edna, Sir Les is a character straight from Barries sense of humour.
Basically an important political identity who has never run for office but always holds an important but unnamed political post.
A typical chain smoking drunken slob who is always drooling and with an eye for young women and girls.
Sir Les is everything any country should be embarrassed about within the corridors of power.
The character would be just as funny as a judge, but harder to interview. lol

The funniest part of this is Australians know Sir Les has a massive 14” weapon of mass seduction and it’s got a mind of its own😂Every time the camera pans out it’s so obvious I keep waiting for you to notice and when you paused it and cracked up I was sure u saw it but then u said drool again Aghh 😂the anticipation is killer it’s like watching a mouse eat cheese of a mouse trap 😳😂

"I went to 'Honkers'..." (Hong Kong) LOL
Australians do what Liverpudlians do, shorten words such as Christmas and Electricity (ie.'Crimbo' and 'Leccy'.) Australia must have received a lot of criminals from Liverpool in the early days!

Sir les Patterson is drooling because he has a medical condition with his tongue, producing excess amounts of saliva. You also did not hear the baby arm jokes, (maybe in another video, you get me?) do some more research... Australia lost more than one great man but also Sir Les & Dame Edna & many more. RIP Barry Humphries we will forever remember the joy you brought to the world.
