The Yanks don't understand the UK or Australian sense of humour
It shows on this video.
Exactly and then get frustrated when we don't laugh at their shows. I've had people shocked that find out I don't find Friends all that funny.
Barry Humphries IS Australian. Parkinson went to do his show in Australia for a bit. Oh and that isn't sunburn, it's boozer's blush. Dame Edna is his most famous creation, but I love Sir Les
To be clear, Les wasn't representing Britain making fun of Australians. Les Patterson (actor Barry Humphries) was a caricature of Australian diplomats in the 1980s who were swept into power because they knew the right hands to shake. They were mostly just hard drinking slobs with top jobs! In fact Les would often be heard slagging off the 'poms' (Brits) as was the culture at the time in Australia. The joke is really that it is so close to reality that it embarrassed a lot of high ranking Australians and brought to public attention the terrible slobs who represented us (Aussies) overseas in the political sphere. Anyway the whole act is a parody of the uncomfortable truth about powerful morons!
Barry Humphries was Australian.....
Its hilarious watching you two trying to decode Sir Les. He's a satirical character contrived by Barry Humphries. Jacki Weaver you will recognise from Yellowstone, Silver Linings Playbook and Animal Kingdom. Barry Jones was quiz champion who became a leading Australian politician.
It's not bruising it's redness caused by alcoholism which is makeup to establish the character. Also Les Patterson is played by a well-respected Australian actor called Barry Humphries.
It's Australian comedy legend Barry Humphries better know for his comedy character Dame Edna Everage
I've come to prefer Sir Les over Dame Edna recently. Political satire always seems relevant. Humphries is a true legend.
I didn't like dame edna. He was funniest as himself.
The red stuff is supposed to be broken capillaries from drinking like WC Fields
RIP Barry Humphries . Sir Les would be proud !
That is jackie Weaver, you see her now in many movies. The red face is from over drinking and smoking. He represents the crude australian character.
Sir Les is a national treasure! Well, perhaps his creator, Barry Humphries is the real treasure - indeed he is!
You poor guys, there is so much Australian humour in this that is hard to get but sir les is so clever!
Sir Les is just a send up of a outlandish diplomat. This is one of Barry Humphries characters. He is an Australian. GG is the Governor General who represents the Queen in Australia as head of State.
The redness was just blushing from drinking.
Jackie Weaver was a beloved actress.
Barry Jones was an absolute academic wiz. Appeared in a show called Pick A Box in the early 70"s. Became a Labor (Democrat left) member in the ACT.
I can understand American and Australian. Na look you see, it's a bit of an old school Aussie accent he's doing. It's even specific to a certain state or city.
Not even Parky picked up the Saint Pauls Abbey joke
The guests with Sir Les on the talk show are Jacki Weaver, an Australian actress and Barry Jones who came to notice as a trivia genius on game shows and by this time was a member of parliament.
I saw the line-up and thought "Trifecta!" I'll be checking out the full episode now.
React to some Barry as Dame Edna Everage on her show interviewing various celebrities! Barry was a comic genius! RIP
It's not the UK making fun of Australia. Barry Humphries is Australian. He's the one making fun and most Australians are very happy with it.
My God. These two dills are funnier than Sir Les.
There was one Australian Governor General Sir John Kerr who loved the booze. Theres a video of him on yt drunk at the 1977 Melbourne Cup
Jackie Weaver won an Oscar recently
Sir Les Patterson is a character of Barry Humphries who was a brilliant man. RIP Barry.
The accent isn't just Australian, it's fairly specific to the state, city and even suburb, just like anywhere else in the world. I am not surprised that you cannot understand it all, that is perfectly reasonable. I have known characters just like this... to some degree. The Melbourne working class accent (old Melbourne) is coming out here I believe. Barry is very particular about these finite details, and he is or was a proud Melbournian.
Yes, there are some fine touches, and not being from Melbourne myself, no doubt one or two that went over my head as well.
Checkout Barry Humphries other characters. Dame Edna, Sandy
Funny watching this couple and they not laughing at Sir Les. He was sheer class
What do you expect:
a) they’re young
b) they’re American🤪
It can't be circa 1985 as he was asked if he was going to the royal wedding and he referenced St Pauls Abbey (meaning Cathedral). Well that was Charles and Di's wedding and that was in 1981, so the title is wrong.
More famous as Dame Edna Everage. The actress next to him has done well in Silver Linings playbook and Yellowstone
The "joke" you're missing is that Sir Les has a massive phallus in his trousers which he keeps moving back and forth. That's why the women are screaming and laughing. However in this version it's been cut out by focusing the camera elsewhere.
One other thing: why do all Americans have trouble with the name Les? It's just short for Leslie.
Les and CO are Australian royalty
Red Sea pedestrian lol.
Unfortunately. the commentators were not aware that in Australia the word "root" is slang for sexual intercourse. Understanding this places a new light on some of sir Les's comments.
It's goodo Aussie talk
It's not sunburn it's from drinking to much
Absolute genius. Another amazing Aussie comedian is Chris Lilley. My favourite characters he does are;
Gran
Mr G
Daniel & Nathan
Absolutely hilarious (although very politically incorrect)
Barry Humphries hates the type of people represented by his characters Dame Edna and Sir Les.
a GG job is the Governor General who is the head of state
It's not bruising nor sunburn it his capillaries are in large and close to the skin from drinking to much if you looked at his finger they would be yellow from nicotine. Barry Humphrey's great Australian comedian he had many characters. His main character he played was Dame Edna Everage. The the skit at the Royal Comand Preformance sitting up with the then Prince of Wales and Camilla and the staff chat to him and he said isn't that nice the found me better seats.
A thumbs up to Lance Boyle from the A.C.U.N.T !
Barry Humphries legend
Les Patterson is a spoof of what a Minister of Culture should be
Rip Barry humpries
Hard for you guys to understand Aussie, English humour, never mind, check out Rodney rude , stand up Aussie comedian, mc Donald's joke, you'll love it 😅
He wasn't drunk as he was acting. The subject matter is more 1980s topics so you're not expected the understand the context. But if you get the comedy, that's more important.
In Australia and the U K. a root is another term for a fu(k or having secks, doing it lol
Nothing wrong the audio. Americans just don’t get satire and irony.
"Red Sea pedestrian" = A Christian.
It's quite hard to understand the seppo accents in this film. You with me?
It's a rash hahaha
Go watch the movie. "Sir Les Patterson saves the world !"
Barry 😂😂 bless u 😂
Cant pronounce Les . Wow
It's a skin infection.
No irony with American humour. That's why they don't get it.
Nah, i prefer Dame Edna
I'm an australian and i don't really laugh at his jokes, but i do laugh at Dame Edna's jokes.
I think sir Lez is hilafjous, I'm Irish but I get every word he says, I'm with him.Can think of a fewIrish politicians like tbatmention no names, don't want to emigrate, roaming hands too.
