You’re so respectful and it’s a wonderful reaction. One minor note, he died at 89. Xx
Addendum - when ‘madge’ retired, she went into a less than desirable retirement home. Barry found out about this and paid for her move to something much more respectable!

Barry Humphries was a comedy genius, and possibly Australia's greatest comedian. Us Brits were so lucky that he chose to gift us with his presence.

Honestly, this hit me quite a lot. His characters were amongst the greatest creations in all of comedy, and his wit and charm was second to none. What's particularly shocking for me is the nature of his passing. He tripped over a rug at his house back in February, which consequently required hip surgery. It was the complications from this which forced us to say goodnight possum. Such a horrid shame. Also, for us Brits to have him pass within weeks of Paul O'Grady, it's a crazy feeling losing two icons of our screens in such a short time span. Condolences and sympathies to his family, fans, and Australian cousins who, I suspect, are feeling his passing perhaps more than most, or all, of the rest of us.

The Sandy Stone character always used to start Dame Edna’s live shows (at least back in the late 70s and 80s). An old man in his pyjamas and dressing gown appearing almost ghost like reminiscing about life and how things have changed during his lifetime. There were a few laughs but it was so understated. Then the character Sir Les Paterson would have 20 to 30 minutes before the main event. Always used to try and get seats in the centre stalls but not in the first 4 rows in case you got selected for some roasting from Edna.
Whenever Barry Humphries appeared on television as Edna or Les you knew you were in for a comedy masterclass. Thankfully there will always be the memories on CZcams.

Sandy Stone is a relic of postwar Melbourne where Barry grew up. His rambling reminiscences depict the minutiae of eastern suburban life in the 1950s in the most uncanny and vivid detail, but the brilliance of his portrayal is mostly lost on non-Melburnians, so don't bother. Growing up there in the same time period, I find his monologues endlessly fascinating - just one more dimension to this multidimensional genius. Sandy's a great character but not for international audiences. Others we rarely see these days are corrupt trade union leader Lance Boyle and rapacious corporate CEO Owen Steele. Outside Australia, he's mostly associated with celebrity chat shows, his own and others, but his live theatre shows are a unique theatrical experience which I've been privileged to witness in his home city. I've never seen anyone 'work' an audience like Barry did. RIP Bazza.

Edna and Madge have been part of UK culture for so long and have never let us down so seeing you getting acquainted with them and so enthusiastically is just great. Saw them live in London a long while back and the show was more magnificently outrageous than any of the TV appearances. Great to see Madge here out of her dowdy outfit and into something glamorous. Great legs!

Saw him live, West End, early 90s. Hilarious, Same Edna threw gladioli out to audience, caught one. Near front, Sir Les Patterson spat on us at one point. The Royal Family box, someone swan dived off and believed it, yet real, joke. Still laughing all week. Saw UK Sitcoms, West End yet only comedian to see live.

  • @anEyePhil

He was 89 when he died. It was from "complications" following hip replacement surgery after he fell and I assume broke a hip. His family and friends said that, despite the pain, he remained himself to the end. This included sharing jokes with the nurses about the "grim reaper" haunting the corridors of the hospital in "the original hoodie". As an Aussie, this is a devastating moment, losing the best thing the Australia ever produced. Read his autobiographies, you will find out where it all came from. Go well, Sunny Sam.

I saw Sandy Stone 3 times on stage, including once where it was Sandy for the whole show. Just as brilliant as Edna or Les, but much more subtle and quiet. Mt parents used to see Humphries shows in Melbourne in the 1950s.

To be honest I was never aware of the Sandy Stone Character by the Late and Great, Barrie Humphries. Who I have followed and enjoyed immensely over many decades. It’s only in the many tribute articles that have been written over this weekend, that ‘Sandy’ has also been mentioned. Possibly, he may have been primarily intended for a ‘Home’ audience in Australia. Here is a ‘Sandy’ link, which I have not yet watched, but I will do so later. I believe the ‘Sandy’ character has a tendency to occasionally emit a slight whistle as he speaks. I’m sure we will enjoy it.

Sandy was great. Very contemplative so he usually was only a small part of the show, often at the end.
By the way, some outlets are saying he was 86 but Barry was actually 89. He had a good run.
Theres a very funny video somewhere of Dame Edna on the Joan Rivers show. Joan was in stitches laughing at the roasting Dame Edna gave her.

Sandy Stone is much more subtle and low key, which may explain why he's less familiar. Essentially an extended theatrical monologue, brilliantly written and flawlessly performed, but not something that works well on TV when a short attention span is all that's required. Humphries once said Sandy Stone was conceived as an exercise to see if boredom could be made entertaining. He's more accessible to an audience with some awareness of mid-century Australian society.
